ELLENBORO — Mrs. Sarah Philbeck Rumfelt, 63, of Race Path Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Willow Ridge in Rutherfordton. She was born in Cleveland County, the daughter of the late Jessie and Orla Durham Philbeck. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Clyde Ray Rumfelt; a son, Scottie Ray Rumfelt and wife, Jacki, of Rutherfordton; a daughter, Sarah Jo Combest and husband, Keith, of Athens, Ga.; a brother, Earl Philbeck and wife, Linda, of Ellenboro; three sisters, Margaret Hoyle, Mary Cooper and husband, Bryson Jr., and Betty and Terry Greene, all of Ellenboro; five grandchildren, Kristy Biddy, Chris Biddy, Justin Rumfelt, Jordan Rumfelt and Katie Rumfelt. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Wayne Blackwood and Revs. John Godfrey and David Jones officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, and at other times at the home of Earl and Linda Philbeck, 630 Bugger Hollow Road, Ellenboro. ‘Bobo’ Hamilton
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Edger Bennett “Bobo” Hamilton, 27, of 10 E. Court St., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Home with the Revs. James Lytle, Aldred Mapp, DeWitt Miller and Minister Dorothy Jeter officiating. Burial will be in Doggett’s Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Aaliyah Williams
SHELBY — Aaliyah Destiny Williams, six-month-old daughter of Trina K. Wright and Renaldo Williams, died Wednesday. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Welcome Baptist Church, 233 Trade St., with the Rev. Jeff McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Tony Haynes
SHELBY — Mr. Antonio Markeise “Tony” Haynes, 25, of 408 Clegg St., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby. Born Aug. 30, 1976, in Cleveland County, he was the son of Minnie McIntyre and Melvin Whitworth of the home and Thomas and Alberta Marable of Lawndale. He attended Shelby High School and was formerly employed at Bernhardt Industries. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Willie Haynes and George Marable; his great-grandparents, Millard and Grace McIntyre and Miles and Maggie Hayes. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Shanique Monay Haynes of the home; his grandparents, James and Elizabeth Maddox of Shelby, John Carson of Hartford, Conn., Ada Marable and Maggie Barron, both of Shelby; four brothers, Michael Hosch Jr. of the home, Thomas Marable of Lawndale and Melvin Whitworth III and Antonio Odums, both of Shelby; six sisters, Lashea McIntyre and Alexis Whitworth, both of the home, Tyrice Roseboro and Tonya Hillman, both of Kingstown, and Latisha and Charmel Whitworth, both of Greensboro; two very special friends, Marquette London of Winston-Salem and Maurice Sutton of Shelby; and a host of uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Rev. B.D. Houze officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Oveda Vaughan
SHELBY — Mrs. Oveda Panther Vaughan, 82, of 403 Edgewood Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at home. Born Oct. 12, 1919, in Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Charlie Columbus and Fannie Love Panther. She was married to J.M. Vaughan Jr. for 59 years. Oveda was retired as a receptionist at Lily Mills Co. and member of the Old Timers Club. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Shelby, where she taught preschool Sunday school, served on the altar guild and as a communion steward. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Gussie, Archie, Ken and J.B. Panther; and three sisters, Rosa Lillian Panther, Veola Ledford and Edna Black. She is survived by her husband, J.M. Vaughan Jr.; three sons, Donald M. Vaughan and wife, Gayenelle, and Jerry L. Vaughan, all of Shelby, and Terry W. Vaughan of Rock Hill, S.C.; four grandchildren, Beth Lowrance and husband, Steve, of Charlotte, Jenny Bridges and husband, John, of Boiling Springs, Chris Vaughan and Tracey Vaughan of New Jersey; four great-grandchildren, Tiffany Lowrance, Jenna Bridges, Carson Bridges and Colby Bridges; two brothers, Grady Panther of Shelby and Floyd Panther and wife, Vernie, of Gastonia; two sisters, Dessie Johnson of Gastonia and Irene Blanton of Shelby; and by a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with Dr. John Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Steve Lowrance, John Bridges, Clark Poole, Charles Greene and Bill Vaughan. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 200 E. Marion St., Shelby, NC 28150; or to Hospice of Wendover, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Johnny Baxter
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Johnny Earl Baxter, 77, of 6812 N.C. 182, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. Born May 17, 1925, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Earl and Connie Bess Baxter. He retired from Carl Grigg Electric in Shelby as an electrician. He was a member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church of Cherryville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Quay Baxter. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Wilma Grigg, and husband, Carl, of Shelby; a nephew, Tommy Baxter, and wife, Julia, of Shelby; a niece, Diane Brogden, and husband, Harry, of Lincolnton; and by a number of great-nephews, nieces, great-great-nephews and nieces. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Randi Godfrey and Ben Steele officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Bess Chapel United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, 2741 N.C. 274 N., Cherryville, NC 28021. DETROIT — Mr. Elijah Toms, 78, formerly of Bostic, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Riverview Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home, Forest City.

Willie Thrift
SHELBY — Mr. Willie R. Thrift, 66, of 115-11 Bradley Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Julie Greene Thrift. He was a Baptist and served six years in the National Guard. He is survived by a son, Jeffrey Thrift of Shelby; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Joy and Joseph Appleman of Shelby, Deborah and Rickey Toney of Rutherfordton and Sandra and Joey Tucker of Chesnee, S.C.; four sisters, Marie Scruggs of Cliffside, Margaret Lovelace of Forest City, Sarah Whitaker of Danieltown and Rosa Lee Bostic of Cliffside; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. David Fambrough officiating. Interment will be in Cliffside Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Daisy Brown
ROCKWELL — Mrs. Daisy Gertrude Brown, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 26, 1919, in Gwinnett County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Willis Henry Brown Sr. and Omie Beatrice Wilder. She attended Gwinnett County schools and was dietary supervisor at Methodist Home in Charlotte. She was a Baptist. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James W. Brown, who died in 1999. She is survived by a son, Kenneth E. Brown Sr. of Rockwell; two sisters, Shirley Morris of Salisbury and Virginia McWhiter of Shelby; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bruce Sheeks officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Powles Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2070 Emmanuel Church Road, Rockwell, NC 28138.

Clarence Williams
SHELBY — The Rev. Clarence R. Williams, 73, of 809 E. Main St., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002. We will celebrate his homegoing on Friday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church in Shelby. The Rev. Williams was a man who loved God, loved his family and loved people. He was very much loved by his family. Born Jan. 24, 1929, in Dawson Springs, Ky., he was a son of the late Robert and Clara Calvert Williams. He retired as minister of Wesleyan Church and served in the Army. He was also a member of First Wesleyan Church of Shelby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Williams of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Steve and Debbie Williams of Lattimore, the Rev. Hank and Mary Ann Williams of Dallas, Texas, and Jimmy Williams of Shelby; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Lindy Stallings of Shelby, Cindy and Casey Hines of Atlanta, Kim and Pete Wood of Central, S.C., and Beth and the Rev. Glenn Ward of Morganton; nine grandsons, Tobin Hines and his wife, Rebecca, Trasy Snow, Jason Williams, Jack Hines, John Wood, Wesley Williams, Heath Williams, Mitch Williams and C.J. Ward; three granddaughters, Jessica Snow, Ashley Wood and Mary Beth Ward; and a special friend, Melissa Williams. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Tommy Buchanan and Henry Williams and Dr. Clyde Dupin officiating. Interment will be in Hoey United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, 1542 Kings Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Vernon Waters Jr.
ELLENBORO — Mr. Vernon Waters Jr., 72, of 156 Dobbinsville Extension, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Race Path Baptist Church with the Rev. John Godfrey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Joyce Goode
POQUOSON, Va. — Mrs. Joyce W. Goode, widow of Maxwell W. Goode, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at her home. A native of Boiling Springs, she had been a Peninsula resident since 1961. Mrs. Goode was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church and its choir, American Sewing Guild, a P.E.O. sister and played piano for the Poquoson city senior’s group. Preceding in her death were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Whisnant; and a brother, Eddy Whisnant. She is survived by two daughters, Rita S. Cody and husband, Don, of Dalzell, S.C., and Rinda E. Albert and husband, Martin, of Virginia Beach; a son, Maxwell W. Goode Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of Poquoson; three grandchildren, Anna Cody, Jesse Cody and Andrew Bowling; a sister, Susie M. Reade and husband, Martin, of Hampton; a brother, Ted C. Whisnant and wife, Susan, of Marion, S.C.; and a sister-in-law, Cindy Bowman of Raleigh. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the Claytor Rollings Funeral Home and at other times at the family home. The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home by Rev. John Snow. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton. Memorials contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Emmaus Baptist Church Building Fund.

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Lila “Jackie” Edwards, 77, of 215 Overbrook Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Brookview Healthcare Center. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Frederick Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Goforth officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association, P.O. Box 1095, Gaffney, SC 29342. White Columns-Gaffney Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Hattie Johnson
SHELBY — Ms. Hattie J. Boykins Toms Johnson, 70, formerly of 513 Suttle St., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a resident of Century Care Nursing Home in Shelby. She was the daughter of the late Waymon and Mary D. Shade Boykins and was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Rutherford County. She was a faithful member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, until her health failed, where she was a member of of the Usher Board, Senior Choir, Senior Missionary Department and the Sunday School Department. She retired from Fasco Controls Inc. after 15 years and was previously employed by the Samuel B. Strain Family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses S. Toms; a son, Ulysses Toms Jr.; a sister, Lizzie Boykins Toms and two brothers, J.W. Boykins and James Boykins. She leaves to cherish fond memories her husband, John Johnson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby G. and Aileen Toms and Dwight and Linda Toms, all of Shelby; two daughters and a son-in-law, Helen Toms and James Flack of Kingstown and Barbara Toms Banks of Shelby; four brothers, L.C. Boykins of Forest City, Donald Boykins, Charles Boykins and Paul Boykins, all of Spindale; four sisters, Bernice Toms and Georgia Finney both of Kingstown, Dorothy Boykins of Forest City and Mary Beam of Spindale; a daughter-in-law, Wylee Sellers Toms of Phenix City, Ala.; three stepsons and their spouses Johnny and Sally Johnson of Cherryville, Dennis Johnson of Shelby and Willie Mintz of Charlotte; four stepdaughters and their spouses, Shirley Johnson Cherry of Charlotte, Sarah Johnson and Diane and Bernard Weaver, all of Kingstown, and Patricia and Ivan Surratt of Shelby; 41 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church in Kingstown with the Rev. Willie Whitworth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at the home of a daughter, Helen Flack, at 1804 Quail Run Drive in Shelby. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
