Lt. Col. Kenneth “Ken” Duane Reese, (US Army Retired)
St. James - LTC ReeseLt. Col. Kenneth “Ken” Duane Reese, (US Army Retired), 80, of St. James, passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.
Lt. Col. Reese was born
April 29, 1934 the son of the late Evan and Jean Reese. He was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and served 23 years in the US Army including combat tours in Vietnam. He was also very proud of graduating from the Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Lt. Col. Reese enjoyed his retirement; he loved his family, friends and pets. He was an avid boatman, traveler, and a member of the St. James Fire Department, a volunteer and former chairman of the Southport Maritime Museum, and a New Hope Clinic volunteer.
Surviving is his wife Martha Reese; a daughter Sharon Hess and husband Dennis of Dousman, WI; a son Steve Reese and wife Lorrie of Saco, ME; and four grandchildren, Lyndsay Reese, Ryan Reese, Nicholas Hess, and Madelyn Hess.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on Saturday, November 8, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Chapel. A reception will follow the service until 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

James Salmon
Southport - James Arthur Salmon, 86 of Southport, passed away on Monday, November 3, 2014.
Mr. Salmon was born
in Kingston, Jamaica on May 20, 1928 and was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Surviving is his wife Vernell Salmon; a son Tony Salmon of Jamaica; two daughters Beverly Salmon Wright of Canada, and Sharon Salmon of New York; two-step daughters Marion Virginia Hurst and Denise Stills both of New Jersey; and a host of grand and great-grandchildren.
The family visitation will be held from 6 – 8 pm on Friday, November 7, 2014 at Peacock – Newnam & White funeral service Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday, November 8th in the ILA Hall with burial to follow in the Northwood Cemetery.

Rev. John F. Watkins
Southport - Reverend John F. Watkins, 91, of Southport passed at his home Friday, October 31, 2014.
Reverend Watkins was born
April 21, 1923, to the late John W. and Pauline Watkins and was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Watkins, daughter Anna Katherine Marsette and son John F. Watkins Jr.
He is survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth Marsette, Joanna Lee and Terence Lee; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Christ Body Ministry Church at 105 South Howe Street in Southport on Friday, November 7, from 3 to 5 p.m.
A graveside service will be held in Northwood Cemetery at 12:00 PM Saturday November 8, 2014 by Reverend Betty Jo Blackmon officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.

Vivian Beryl Jones
Southport - Vivian Beryl Jones, age 76, of Southport passed away July 31, 2014 at her home.
Mrs. Jones was born
October 15, 1937 in Southport, daughter of the late Tony and Vera Wescott McKeithan. She worked as an LPN for one year in Oklahoma. After relocating to Southport, she worked as an LPN for several years, then for veterinarian Bill Rabon for 20 years and retired from there as a Veterinary Assistant. Mrs. Jones was a member of Southport Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Kendall Allen Jones and wife Becky of Oak Island, Kevin Scott Jones of Southport, and Keenan Eric Jones and wife Teresa of Boiling Spring Lakes; and five grandchildren, Kendall Evan Jones, Krystal deVaux Jones, Kennan Scott Jones, Kaylyn deVaux Jones, and Erica Morgan Jones.
Funeral services will be 11am Monday, August 4, 2014 at Southport Baptist Church with Reverend Eugene Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow in Northwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3-5pm Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport.

Gladys Baldwin
Southport - Gladys Baldwin, age 89 of Southport, went to be with her maker on Monday July 28, 2014.
Gladys was born
and lived in Newark NJ and graduated from Newark Vocational High School with an associate’s degree in graphic arts. Her early career was in graphic arts and illustration. After marrying Richard, her husband of 63 years, she earned a nursing degree later in life and was a dedicated mother and house wife.
She leaves a daughter, Melody Fogarty of Southport NC, and son, Richard Scott Baldwin of Haydenville, MA. She was a loving grandmother to three grand children and four great grand children.
Gladys made her home in Lake Mohawk, NJ for 43 years before moving to Southport in 2006 to be closer to her family. She has resided at the Dosher Nursing Center for the past 15 months where she had many friends and received loving care. She is greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Home on Howe Street in Southport on Saturday, August 23rd at 2:00 PM.

Reverend PD Midgett, III
Southport - Reverend PD Midgett, III age 91 of Southport passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
PD Midgett III, was born
September 6, 1923 in Durham, to the late Peleg Dameron Midgett, Jr. and Thelma Edwards Midgett. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol Wickham Midgett. Also surviving are two brothers, George (Loretta), Newton; Bernard (Bridget) of Belhaven and one sister, Martha Kelly, Richmond, VA. PD is survived by six children Peleg Dameron Midgett IV, Raymond NH; Steven Gilbert Midgett of Franklin; Frederic Bell Midgett of Raleigh; Patricia Elizabeth Midgett (Dan) of Greensboro; John Dameron Midgett (Laura) and Todd Cameron Midgett (Kristi) of Wilmington; seven grandchildren, Aaron (Kim) of Portland, OR; Jacob, Boulder, CO; Terra, Portland, OR; Lillian (Jenny) and Amelia, Greensboro; Thomas, Durham and Hadley, Wilmington. He is survived by one great grandchild, Wyatt, Portland, OR.
PD attended the Citadel before joining the Army where he played in the band and was a member of the gymnastics team. During WWII he served in the 3rd Infantry Division and was first ashore at Anzio, Italy. Following the war he received a degree in economics from Duke University where he was on the gymnastics team. PD returned to Engelhard, NC to learn his father’s business, Pamlico Power and Light Company. He worked there until 1956 when he was “called” to the ministry. He earned a Master of Divinity Degree at Duke Divinity School.
PD was a member of the North Carolina Annual Methodist Conference. He served United Methodist Churches in North Carolina, including Oxford Charge, Chapel Hill Charge, Creedmoor Charge, Four Oaks Charge, Ocean View United Methodist Church (Long Beach), Wallace United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church (Southport) until his retirement in1994. After a two-week retirement he became a part time associate at Wrightsville United Methodist Church where he served until his death. PD served on the Conference Board of Camping, Conference Board of Ministry among other roles.
PD was a true Renaissance man. He was an artist who preferred watercolor but experimented with other media. He was a photographer and videographer who documented much of Southport’s history and the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station which currently stands on the site of his grandfather’s birthplace.
PD played in several musical groups. Soul on the Water played for Cape Fear Contra Dance Society. He arranged the musical performers for the Farmer’s Market on the Garrison Lawn and many other events in Southport. He organized performances for the Great Bear Trio, Jeff Warner, The Jay Ungar and Molly Mason Family Band, and Mike and Ruthie. He enjoyed playing the harmonica from an early age often using it in his ministry. PD played many different musical instruments.
Community service was a hallmark of PD’s life. His leadership included serving as chair of the Brunswick Family Assistance Program, Duplin Art Guild, Artists of Southport, Food Pantry, and Southport Ministerial Association. He organized and led the Southport Music Jam for area musicians at the Senior Center. He recently received a key to the city of Southport to celebrate his service to others. In earlier years, he was a Boy Scout leader earning the Order of the Green Band and an active member of the Civil Air Patrol.
Visitation will be Friday, November 21, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, NC from 6:00-8:00pm.
Services will be held at Wrightsville United Methodist Church at 11:00am Saturday, November 22, 2014; Interment at 3:00pm at Cape Fear Memorial Park in Southport.
