SHELBY — Mr. William David Beaver Jr., 59, of 1102 South Morgan St., died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late William David Sr. and Mamie Bell Whisnant Beaver. He was a self-employed plumber and former member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church and former member of Shelby Moose Lodge. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David Mark and Sharon Beaver of Shelby; a brother, Gerald Robert Beaver of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Amanda Grace, Emily Louise and David Michael Joseph Beaver of Shelby. ELLENBORO — Mr. Joseph Wheeler Costner Jr., of 130 Costner Lane, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital in Boiling Springs. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Rev. J.W. and Cora Lee Canley Costner. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and retired from Shelby Concrete Products. He was a member of Campfield Memorial Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Brooks Costner of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joey and Patsy Costner of Boiling Springs and Larry and Gayle Costner of Ellenboro; one daughter, Ann C. Freeman of Ellenboro; one brother, Sherrill Costner of Morganton; two sisters, Mozelle Parker and Polly Costner of Gibson; four grandchildren, Amy Byers, Julie Freeman, Matthew Costner and Suzanne Costner; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler Byers and Taylor Byers. The funeral will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Campfield Memorial Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joey Cantrell, Eugene Passmore and Karen Jones, and Dr. David Irish officiating. GREENWOOD, S.C. — Mrs. Nancy Merle Walker Rudd, 66, of 106 Par Place, wife of Jerry Wayne Rudd, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center. Born in Bagwell, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Omer Earl and Ruby Dell Parker Walker. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three daughters, Kathy Franklin of Houston, Texas, Terry Rudd of Austin, Texas and Denise and Paul Lindow of Houston; and two granddaughters, Miss Kellie Martin and Miss Callie Franklin of Houston. The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Harley Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood, with the Rev. Randy Ouzts officiating. Another service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Beulah United Methodist Church in Shelby. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service in Shelby. Burial will be in Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dennis Clark, David Sears, Paul Lindow, Bryan Varner, Jim Brooks and Reggie Hoyle. The family is at home.

SHELBY — Miss Valiree Owens, 84, formerly of Shelby, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Dellinger’s Retirement Home in Forest City. She was the daughter of the late Charlie S. Owens and Lissie Ramsey Owens. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Harlan and Lois Owens of Ellenboro; a niece, Susan Owens McCurry of Mooresboro; and a nephew, Kenneth Ray Owens of Ellenboro. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. Burial will be in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery. ‘A.B.’ Russ
MORGANTON — Mr. Arthur Buren “A.B.” Russ, 77, of Glendale Street, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Grace Hospital. Born April 1, 1925, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John Russ and Carrie McLinda Howard Russ. Mr. Russ retired from Broughton Hospital after 37 years of employment. He was a quiet and gentle man with a good heart and a friend to all who knew him. Mr. Russ was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved animals and was an avid gardener. Mr. Russ’s favorite pastime was the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was a member of Wallace Grove Baptist Church in Shelby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William L. Russ; two half-brothers, Walter and Henry Russ; three sisters, Mary Magdeline Russ, Lona Costner and Mary Newton; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Michaell Barlow. He is survived by his wife, Edna Costner Russ of the home; a son, Michael Shawn Russ of Morganton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Bernice and Joseph Ondesko and Irene Barlow, all of Morganton; three grandsons, Kevin and Shawn Barlow, both of Morganton, and Joey Ondesko of Belmont; two granddaughters, Matoka Vander Western and Sherry Ondesko, both of Morganton; 11 great-grandchildren, Jon Barlow, Shawn Barlow Jr., Summer Barlow, Carolyn Ondesko, Crystal Ondesko, Katie Ondesko, Alex Ondesko, Kenneth Ondesko, Caleb Vander Western, Brian Vander Western and Cariann Vander Western; and a very special cousin, Jim Henderson. The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Dr. Larry Cline officiating. Burial will be in Burke Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by Morganton Veterans Ceremonial Team. SHELBY — Mrs. Bobbie Faye Summitt Rayfield, 81, of 134 Chickasaw Drive, formerly of 404 Valley St. in Stanley, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Crawley Memorial in Boiling Springs. A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Cleveland and Bryte Ormond Summitt and the widow of Thurman Conley Rayfield. She was retired from Textron in Gastonia and a member of First United Methodist Church in Stanley. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Cleve and Linda Rayfield of Shelby; two grandchildren, Stephen Rayfield and Paula Hamrick and husband, Brad, all of Shelby; two great-grandsons, Wesley and Jon Michael Hamrick of Shelby; three sisters, Elizabeth Dameon of Lincolnton, Billie Sue Rhyne of Bessemer City and Pearl Wright of Hawthorne, Fla. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Stanley with the Rev. Patricia Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly. He was a precious metals technician with 40 years service with PPG Industries and was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. SHELBY — Mrs. Joann Wright Scism, 70, of 3264 Ramseur Church Road, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was born in Kings Mountain July 2, 1932, the daughter of the late George Lawson and Thelma Leona Wise Wright. She was a homemaker and a member of Double Shoals Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Clyde Scism Jr. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Clyde Elam Scism Sr. of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Lee Sr. and Amanda Scism of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Boyd Parker and Patty and David Botts, all of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Scism of Lawndale; a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen Lee and Patricia Wright of Bentwood, Tenn; four granddaughters, Jenna Parker, Holly Parker, Caroline Scism and Anna Botts; three grandsons, Michael Botts, Lee Dixon Scism Jr., and Dillon Clyde Scism; a niece, Lindsay Wright; and an uncle, Rockford Wise. EARL — Mr. Tony “Tatoo” Randolph Goins, 37, of 329 Jack Francis Road, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Upstate Carolinas Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was a truck driver, mover and installer for Ward’s Mobile Home Movers. He was a member of the Cleveland County Independent Bikers. He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Toney Goins. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Weeks Goins of the home; his mother and stepfather, Norma Jean and Danny Martin of Shelby; his father, Steven Randolph Goins of Shelby; a daughter, Brandi Goins of Georgia; three sisters, Tammie Gantt of Shelby, Tonda Weeks of Lattimore and Dana Agnew of Shelby. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. Keith Dixon officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. RALEIGH — Mrs. Charlotte Evangeline Falls Spangler Mincey, 95, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at Carolina House in Wake Forest where she was a resident for the past one and one- half years. Born in Cleveland County, Mrs. Mincey was one of 11 children. She was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and taught English in Cleveland County until she was married. She then moved to Durham and graduated from Watts School of Nursing and worked as a private duty nurse in Durham and Hillsborough until age 75. After the death of her second husband, she moved to Raleigh to be near her family. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Oliver Garland Spangler and Jack Mincey; her daughter, Shirley Majors; and her son, Garland Spangler. Surviving are her brothers, W.E. Falls of Hickory and John Falls of Charlotte; a sister, Ruth Falls Hamrick of Lawndale; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Spangler Bailey of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Angela Cummings and her husband, Mike, and Scott Spangler and his wife, Carol, all of Raleigh, and Michelle Lineback and her husband, Scott, of Bradenton, Fla.; and 12 great-grandchildren, Justin, Graham and Braden Shover, Ben, Kelly and Tucker Cummings, all of Raleigh, Nick Cummings of Wake Forest, Averie, Cameron and Sabrynn Lineback of Bradenton, Fla., and Victoria and Gabriella Spangler of Raleigh. The funeral will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at North Ridge Alliance Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.
