Helen Elizabeth Meyer
Southport - Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Meyer, 99 of Southport, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.
Mrs. Meyers was born
February 19, 1915 in New York City, the daughter of the late Josef and Anna Tatarewitz.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and had lived in Southport since 2002. Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by her husband Charles Meyer.
She is survived by a son Donald Meyer of Southport.
Mrs. Meyer’s funeral mass will be private.

Edith Johnson Cochran
Southport - Edith Johnson Cochran, age 96, of Southport passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.
Mrs. Cochran was born
in Branchville, Maryland on April 27, 1917, daughter of the late Albert and Annie (Hofman) Johnson. She grew up in Branchville, Maryland and relocated to several locations, including Washington, DC and Silver Spring, Maryland before retiring to Ocean Pines, Maryland where she lived for 19 years. Mrs. Cochran then moved to Hampton, Virginia to live for eight years before moving to Southport in 2007. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Cochran was preceded in death by her husband Jack A. Cochran.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie Holman of St. James, North Carolina and Patti Pezzuti of Annapolis, Maryland; two brothers, Ginn Johnson of Frederick, Maryland and Lawrence Johnson of Clinton, North Carolina; three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Burial will be private.

Dora Mae Puleo
Southport - Dora Mae Puleo, 78 of Southport passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Ocean Trail Nursing Center in Southport.
Ms. Puleo was born
May 10, 1935 in Bennettsville, SC the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Davis Wilkes. Ms. Puleo was a charming little lady who loved life, people, and especially her family. She will be truly missed by all that knew her. Ms. Puleo was preceded in death by two daughters Carolyn Lambert and Annette Williams; two brothers; four sisters; and a grandson Sebastian Puleo.
Surviving is her son Jimmy Puleo of Supply; a daughter Rose Goins and husband Dwayne of Southport; a sister Ethel Todd of Bennettsville, SC; ten grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 4, 2014 in the Cape Fear Memorial Park Mausoleum with Reverend Lewis Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Peacock – Newnam & White funeral service in Southport.

Peter Robert Smith
Bolivia - Peter Robert “Pete” Smith, 70, of Bolivia died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick.
Mr. Smith was born
in Hudson, New York on March 31, 1943, son of the late Henrey Smith and Elizabeth Garrett Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Vietnam. Mr. Smith was a member of Lighthouse Pentecostal Church and he loved to sing to patients during nursing home visits. He had worked as a bridge tender at the Sunset Beach swing bridge.
Survivors include his wife Gladys Smith of the home; one step-son Terrance Auburn Simpson; three sisters; four brothers; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3:00 pm Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Cape Fear Memorial Park with Reverend Charles Drew officiating.

Concetta N. Spina
Southport - Concetta N. Spina 92 of Southport passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at her home.
Mrs. Spina was born
November 4, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of the late Salvatore and Frances Gentile Soraci. She had lived in Southport for the past three years and had attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mrs. Spina was a loving mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and watching cooking shows. She was preceded in death by her husband John Spina and a granddaughter Dawn Marie.
Surviving is her son Joseph Spina of Cave Creek, Arizona; three daughters Carmela Groce of Southport, Frances Watson of Leland, and Rosemarie Glasel of Valley Cottage, New York; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in New York.

Hugh Thomas Gower
Boiling Spring Lakes - Hugh Thomas Gower, 92 of Boiling Spring Lakes, passed away August 30, 2013 at Dosher Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gower was born
December 13, 1920 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio the son of the late William George Gower and Lucile Campbell Gower. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served for four years. Mr. Gower was a graduate of Stetson University in DeLand, Florida and had worked for McDowell Engineering Company for over 30 years. Mr. Gower was a Mason for over 50 years. Mr. Gower is survived by his wife Maria E. Thumm Gower whom he married in 1950; he is also survived by two nieces Patricia McIver of Goleta, California and Nancy Dhonau of Wellington, Florida. There will be no local services. Burial will be in the Mound View Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

Mr. Henry Little “Buck” Kitchin
Southport - Mr. Henry Little “Buck” Kitchin, 74, of Southport, N.C., died after a long illness on August 29, 2013 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, surrounded by his family.
He was born
on February 7, 1939 in East Orange, New Jersey, the son of Alvin Paul Kitchin, originally of Scotland Neck, N.C., and Dora Bennett Little Kitchin, originally of Wadesboro, N.C. After living for short times in Newark, Dallas, and Miami, where his father served in local offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the family returned in 1945 to his mother’s hometown of Wadesboro, North Carolina. There he attended local schools, and was an Eagle Scout. At Wadesboro High School, from which he graduated in 1957, he was student body president and earned All-State honors as a running back on the football team. He attended Wake Forest College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 1961; he also attended Wake Forest School of Law, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, and graduated with his law degree in 1963.
He began active duty service in the United States Army in 1963, and was honorably discharged in 1965 with the rank of Captain. He returned to North Carolina to practice law. After practicing in Charlotte for five years, in 1970 he joined the firm of Leath & Bynum in Rockingham; in 2010, he retired from the same firm, now known as Kitchin, Neal, Webb, Webb & Futrell. During his legal career, he was an accomplished criminal and civil trial attorney and a trusted counselor and advisor. He was a member of the Twentieth Judicial District Bar, the North Carolina State Bar, the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He practiced in the federal and state courts located in North Carolina. He was a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
He was an active outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and conservationist. In particular, he enjoyed turkey hunting. He was a former President of the North Carolina Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. His interest in conservation was also evidenced by his service as a member of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, where he helped create the North Carolina Wildlife Endowment Fund and the Lifetime Sportsman program, and his later service on the board of the North Carolina Natural Heritage Trust Fund. At other times, he was actively involved in Ducks, Trout and Quail Unlimited. He also enjoyed raising retrievers and bird dogs.
Surviving him is his immediate family: his wife, Frances Davis (“Cissy”) Kitchin, of the home; his son, Henry L. (“Hal”) Kitchin, Jr., his wife, Mabel Trask Kitchin, and their son, Henry Little Kitchin III, of Wilmington; his daughter, Caroline Kitchin Jones, her husband, Christopher Scott Jones, and their sons, Christopher Kitchin Jones and Bennett Davis Jones, of Wilmington; his brother, Dr. Paul Kitchin and his wife, Joanne, of Monroe, their daughter DoraAnn McKenzie, and son Paul Kitchin IV; and his brother-in-law, Tommy Davis and his wife, Pam, of Greenville, South Carolina, and their daughters Amy Moore and Melissa Price. He is also survived by a large extended family, including several aunts and many cousins.
Preceding him in death are his father, Alvin Paul Kitchin, and his mother, Dora Bennett Little Kitchin.
The family would like to express its gratitude to the health care providers who cared for him so lovingly over the last several years, including in particular those who gave him comfort in his last months – Dr. Linda Calhoun and Marcia Bosch of Cape Fear Heart Associates, as well as Mary McNear and all of the other wonderful health care providers and volunteers with the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center.
Those who knew Buck will always remember his kindness, his patience, his reassuring smile, his steady demeanor, his love of the outdoors, and his hard work on behalf of the people and causes he loved and represented. He was a respected lawyer and an accomplished sportsman, but more importantly, he was a loving, caring, patient and faithful husband, father, brother and friend.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7 at 2 p.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport. The Rev. Barry P. Kubler will preside. There will be a visitation prior to the memorial service beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Church’s Chapel of the Cross.

Amanda Boswell Frye — Winnabow
Amanda Boswell Frye, 34 of Winnabow passed away August 26, 2013 at her home. Amanda was born
December 17, 1978 in New Hanover County the daughter of Robert Boswell and Renee Caudill. She loved her children and family, she loved to cook and socialize, she had a love for people and never met a stranger. Mrs. Frye was preceded in death by a brother Stephen Raleigh.
Survivors include her husband David Frye of the home; a daughter Courtney Cain; two sons Austin Cain and Jay Ussery Frye; her father Robert Boswell and wife Tammy of Wilmington; mother Renee Raleigh and wife Debbie Cook of Boiling Spring Lakes; three brothers Brandon Raleigh of Winnabow, Brian Raleigh and wife JoAnn of Bolivia, and Robert Allen Boswell and wife Kari of Wilmington; a step-brother Alex Speight of Greenville; a step-sister Jamie Lyons and husband Jay of Leland; step-father Jack Raleigh of Winnabow; maternal grandmother Barbara Caudill; paternal grandfather Robert Boswell; maternal great-grandmother Omage Sullivan all of Winnabow; mother-in-law Charlotte Byrd; sister-in-law Patti Treadway both of Southport; two uncle Keith Caudill and wife LaRinda of Boiling Spring Lakes and Donnie Caudill and wife Libby of Winnabow; two aunts Bonnie Powell and husband Rob of Winnabow and Nancy Edward and husband Johnny of Wilmington.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, August 30, 2013 at Peace Memorial Baptist Church where she was a member, with Reverend Doug Fairfax and Reverend Hoyt King officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will have visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday at Peacock – Newnam & White funeral service in Southport.
