CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Sally Huffman Helms, 85, of 3392 N.C. 274, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at her residence. Born Nov. 14, 1916, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Horace H. and Julia Frances Conner Huffman and wife of the late Paul Helms. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Cherryville, and a retired inspector with Vision Hosiery of Belmont. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Alpha Belle Huffman, Merle Ford and Ella Helms; and one brother, Jack Huffman. Survivors include eight nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Key and Robert Redding officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 Cedar St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.

SPINDALE — Mrs. Cathy Ann Parker Church, 45, of 805 Pennsylvania Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital, Rutherfordton. A graveside service will be today at 4 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Terry White officiating. The family will receive friends today from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Home.

Coleen Gold
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Coleen Brooks Gold, 71, of Lawrenceville, Ga., formerly of Cherryville, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Emory Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, Ga. She was born in Cleveland County on April 24, 1931, a daughter of the late Audie Loyal and Frances McMurray Brooks. She was a member of First Baptist Church and also attended First Methodist Church and retired from Ferguson Hardware and Dellinger Jewelry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Christopher Gold Jr.; and three brothers and sisters, A.L. Brooks, Ella Ann Dellinger and Linda Blanton. Survivors include two sons, David Randall Jr. and wife, Trang, and Doug Randall and wife, Debbie, all of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two daughters, Donna Randall of Gainesville, Fla., and Rhonda Gold Harrelson and husband, Dean, of Fort Mill, S.C.; a brother, Wally Brooks and wife, Joann, of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Shirley B. McGinnis and husband, Jim, of Cherryville; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Vince Hefner officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carpenters Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Shirley and Jim McGinnis, 207 Bates Ave., Cherryville. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Virginia Daniel Millwood, 75, of 668 Lee Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Smith Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Vess officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Padgett & King Mortuary.

Norma Reel
SHELBY — Mrs. Norma Spencer Reel, 76, of White Oak Manor, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Edward Harvey and Mary Smith Spencer. She was a homemaker and member of Eastside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edsel Reel. She is survived by a son, Lee Reel and wife, Kim, of Shelby; a daughter, Deborah Ellen Bowen of Red Bank, Tenn.; two brothers, E.H. Spencer Jr. and wife, Betty Sue, and F.S. Spencer and wife, Ruth, all of Chesapeake, Va.; six grandchildren, Matthew J. Reel, Morgan Reel, Christi Brown, Phillip Brown, Jamie Saynes and Butch Bowen; and two great-grandchildren, Dean and Hope Saynes. The funeral will be today at 7 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with the Revs. Leland Kerr and Troy Harris officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends after the funeral at the church and at other times at the home of Lee Reel, 111 Aaron Drive, Boiling Springs. Hattie Grayson
BESSEMER CITY — Mrs. Hattie Roxanne Swink Grayson, 95, of 220 E. Maine Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at her granddaughter’s home. Born Jan. 15, 1907, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late William and Martha Hoyle Swink. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Grayson; a daughter, Annie Bell Hanna; four sisters, Ellie Emory, Florence Hannon, Etta Smith and Macie Ledford; a brother, Plato Swink; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by two children, Robert Moses of Gastonia and Edna Darby of Bessemer City; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Eighth Street Church of God with the Revs. Ronnie Pendleton and Danny Shortridge officiating. Burial will be in Bessemer City Memorial. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, Gastonia. CHERRYVILLE — Miss Ellen Beam Carroll, 86, of 201 Harbor View Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home.

Vanda Whisnant
MOORESBORO — Mrs. Vanda Nesbitt Whisnant, 85, of 104 Nesbitt St., died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at Asheville Healthcare Center. Born in Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late Pinckney E. and Martha Belle Motsinger Whicker. She was a teacher at Shelby High School, member of Sandy Run Baptist Church and was involved in many of the church activities. After teaching and coaching for 18 years at various North Carolina high schools and colleges, she taught English and journalism for 20 years at Shelby High School before retiring. She was a member of the Mooresboro Book Club, the K.K.I. Sorority, Democratic Party Precinct Chairman, Eastern Star, Cleveland County Senior Citizens, Cleveland County Senior Olympics, 1982 World Who’s Who of Women and Miss Cleveland County Senior Citizen. She received her bachelor of science degree from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1938 and her master’s from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Andy W. Nesbitt; and her second husband, Guinn Whisnant. She is survived by a son, Phil Nesbitt of Charlotte; two daughters and a son-in-law, Wanda Nesbitt Davidson of Swannanoa and Patty and Dan Morales of Cary; two grandsons, Ben and Patrick Davidson; two granddaughters, Ginny and Elizabeth Whisnant; two stepsons and their wives, Bob and Ginger Whisnant of Albuquerque, N.M., and Laurin and Judy Whisnant of Kings Mountain. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Sandy Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Hendrick officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Sandy Run Baptist Church, P.O. Box 297, Mooresboro, NC 28114.

Doris Ridgeway
SHELBY — Mrs. Doris Virginia Fountain Ridgeway, 84, of White Oak Manor, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Philadelphia, she was a homemaker and employed by Bendix Corp. manufacturing airplane engines in World War II. She also worked in retail sales for F.W. Woolworth Co. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Baldwin and Doris Amanda Parrot Mather; her husband, Joseph Ridgeway; two sisters, Lillian Fountain and Florence Fountain. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Ridgeway Hullender and husband, Bobby Dean, of Shelby; one granddaughter, Rebecca Hullender Haney; and two great-grandchildren, Justin Lee Haney and Cameron Hunter Haney. A memorial service will be Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Rice officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Billy Gene “Bill” Robbs, 63, of 103 Dover Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. John Sloan and the Rev. Jonathan Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to South Point Church, Mission Fund, 9460 South 514 West, Sandy, UT 84070.

Ruby Philbeck
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Ruby Smith Philbeck, 65, of 5010 Tary Court, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at her home. Born April 29, 1937, in Mitchell County, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Bessemer City and a former member of Grace Lutheran Church of Bessemer City. She retired from Kings Mountain Hospital, was a former office and cafeteria worker with Bessemer City Central School and a 1956 graduate of Bessemer City High School. She was preceded in death by her father, J.L. Smith Sr.; and a brother, Keith Smith. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Louis Philbeck of the home; her mother, Vertie Cox Smith of Kings Mountain; three children, Renee Philbeck of Bessemer City, Ronnie Philbeck of Salisbury and Chris Philbeck of Winston-Salem; two brothers, J.L. Smith Jr. of Orlando, Fla., and Gene Smith of Claremont; a sister, Boots Milam of Hickory; nephew and niece, Chad and Toshua Smith of Lowell; several nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Richard Brown of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Bessemer City with Dr. Ron Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Westview Gardens. Pallbearers are Junior Lane, Dennis Matheny, Jimmy Reynolds, Tommy Simpson, Chad Smith and Charles Weatherford. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. SHELBY — Mr. Odus Irvin Jr., 66, of 119 Dillard Circle, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at his home. CLIFFSIDE — Mrs. Gladys Kelly Tinkler, 93, of 4083 U.S. 221-A, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Revs. Anthony Moore, Morris Byers and Ben Steele officiating. A graveside service will be Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery in Seneca, S.C. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Eugene Whisnant
WILMINGTON — Mr. Eugene Graham Whisnant, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Britthaven of Northchase. He was born March 18, 1911, in Kings Mountain and was a member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II and owned and operated Whisnant’s Produce for 20 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Lee Page Whisnant, who died two months ago. Surviving are his two sons, Dan Whisnant of Wilmington and James M. Whisnant and wife, Lanna, of Raleigh; one grandson, Dan Whisnant of Wilmington; one great-grandson, Steven Whisnant; his half brother, Joel Whisnant and wife, Doris; and his half sister, Sarah Hord and husband, Harold. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Wrightsboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Ward of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Sissi and Walter Webb of Shelby; two nieces, Brittany Blanton of Shelby and Miriam Hill of Waldorf, Md.; three nephews, Matt Blanton and Buster and Wayne Hill, both of Waldorf, Md.; and a special mother-in-law, Lou Della Hill of Fallston. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Shumate officiating. Interment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
