Elizabeth Joan Griffin
Southport - Elizabeth Joan Griffin age 79 of Southport, NC died Saturday May 31, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center Wilmington, NC.
She was born
on September 4, 1934 in Harnett County, NC, the daughter of the late, Flynn Rosser and Catherine Black Rosser and was preceded in death by her husband, William “Billy” Griffin and sister Vivian Wooten. She was a longtime member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church. She was a retired office manager with CP & L.
Surviving are a daughter, Sue Perry and husband, Bill of Fayetteville, NC; five grandchildren, David, Rachel, Trey, Angela and Rebecka; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Cameron, Grace and Madison; a brother, Bobby Rosser of Olivia, NC; four sisters, Mabel McDuffie, Mary Catherine Thomas, Lillian Barrett all of Sanford, NC and Dorcas Akers of Newport, News, VA.
Funeral services will be Friday June 6, 2014 at 3pm at Oak Island Presbyterian Church with Pastor Walter Taylor Officiating. Interment will be Monday June 9th at 11am at the Fort Bragg Post Cemetery in Fayetteville, NC.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-8:30 at Peacock-Newnam & White funeral service, Southport.

Lois F. Gordon
Southport - Lois F. Gordon, age 87, of Southport passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.
Survivors include her children Kathy Jones and George Moncrieff, both of Boiling Spring Lakes; two grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Monday, June 2, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Charles Drew officiating. Burial will be at Shepherd Memorial Park in Mountain Home, North Carolina.

Wilbur L. “Smokey” Custer
Oak Island - Mr. Wilbur L.”Smokey” Custer age 62 of Oak Island, NC died May 27, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Custer was born
in Windber, Pa. on August 31, 1951 and was the son of Dora M. Custer of Windber, Pa. and the late Wilbur Custer. He was a retired Bridge Inspector, owning and operating his own company. He was a Hot Rod and old car enthusiast.
Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Michele Custer; two sons, Wade and Eric Young of Downsville, NY.; a sister, Laverne Legath of Johnstown, Pa. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Drew
Southport - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Poole Drew
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Poole Drew, 76, of 448 Jabbertown Road went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born
July 20, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the parents of Charles Clayton and Helen Surma Poole.
As a very young child Mary visited the home of her father in Southport, NC and moved permanently to the city she cherished dearly around 1950. She attended Southport High School and she always said, “I got to Southport as fast as I could.” Mary truly loved Southport with all her heart.
Mary Poole met the love of her life among friends, a handsome young man, Billy Drew, and they were married July 26, 1953. They shared a wonderful marriage together for the past 60 years in this community. To this union, they raised four children, Charles Thomas, William Russell (Rusty), Ronald Lee, and Judith Devel.
She retired due to her sickness in 1996 as the office manager of Dr. LC Hammond Chiropractic Office. Years prior she worked at Harrelson’s IGA and managed and operated the Casey’s Restaurant at Saw Dust Trail Intersection.
Mary loved her family unconditionally. She was their biggest fan and followed her family through out their school years in sports and activities. She NEVER missed a ball game or sporting event by her family. She was always the loudest, most supportive, fan in the stands. She was an Umpire’s nightmare. It was said that when the Drew boy’s were playing ball at Taylor’s Field, you could hear Mary Drew hollering all the way down to the Whittler’s Bench. For many years she was a member of the “Blue Angels” Bowling Team, bowling many perfect games, and winning many championships. She was an avid card player, loving the games of Japanese Rummy and Pinochle. Mary was also one of Elvis Presley’s biggest fans.
Mary and her husband Billy, were saved in the late 1990’s and became members of the Southport Baptist Church. After her salvation, Mary’s life changed dramatically.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a very special cousin that was like a brother to her, Paul Leone, and one grandson, Baby Boy Drew.
She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy, her husband William T. (Billy) Drew who has been so devoted to her every need during her lengthy sickness of 16 years. Three sons, Charles T. (Stephanie) Drew of Supply, NC, Rusty (Bonnie) Drew of Wilmington, NC, and Ronnie (Stephanie) Drew of Winnabow, NC. One daughter, Judy (Chris) Willetts of Bolivia, NC. One Sister, Barbara Ann Poole Sellers (James) of Southport, NC. Thirteen Grandchildren; Charles Anthony, Sarah, Julie, Lee, Tiffiny, Jessica, Leigh Anne, Kristina, Steven, Brent, Tonya, Hayden, and Paige. Seventeen Great-Grandchildren; Kayla, Charles Madsion, Hannah, Ryan, Tyler, Kina, Ty, Lacie, Abigail, Cody, Beth, Molly, Matthew, Mason, Caitlyn, Levi, and Kendall. Also, two wonderful and loving caretakers Lori Brown Hooks, and Francis Stocks Padgett.
Services to celebrate and honor her life will be at 2pm Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Southport Baptist Church with Pastor Charles A. Drew officiating. Interment will follow in the Northwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, May 29, 2014 from 6 – 8 pm at the Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home in Southport, NC and at other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family; Bonner Stiller, Tim Stiller, Roger Harrington, Larry Eason, Earl Elwood, Todd Coring, Davis Brown, and Larry Brown. The Southport Fire Department will also serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
The Drew family wishes to thank all of our family, neighbors, and friends for all of your acts of kindness during Mary’s years of sickness. She has fought a good fight, she has finished her course.

Rosa Baumer Tocco
Oak Island - Rosa Baumer Tocco, 82 of Oak Island passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014 in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.
Mrs. Tocco was born
September 26, 1931 in Germany to the late Heinrich and Anna Baumer. She immigrated to the US in 1954. Mrs. Tocco had worked at Knitwear Mill in Medford, NJ; Gregory’s Department Store in Mt. Holly, NJ and on her family farm. She and her husband moved to Oak Island in 1998 from Pemberton Township, NJ. Mrs. Tocco was preceded in death by a brother Ludwig Baumer and a sister Margaret Kubler.
Surviving is her husband of 60 years Roland Tocco; and a brother Roland Baumer of Germany.
The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday May 29, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a member with Reverend Doug Lawson officiating.

Southport - Sarah Ellen Brandon went to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thursday, May 22, 2014.
She was born
November 22, 1931 to Robert L. Brandon and Sarah Brandon of Meadville Pike, Franklin, Pennsylvania. Sarah graduated from Sugar Creek Township High School Class of 1949 in Rocky Grove Franklin, Pennsylvania.
She is survived by her children Wesley E. Milner, Richard A. Milner, Ellen Paraday, and Vernon L. Cyphert.
Services will be held at 4:00 pm Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel.

Jeannie Casanova
Bolivia - Jeannie Casanova, 37 of Bolivia went peacefully to her rest at her home on May 20, 2014.
She was born
May 6, 1977, in Wilmington and lived in Leland and southern Brunswick County. Though she battled multiple sclerosis and became wheelchair-bound, her spirits stayed high. She never met a stranger, often giving a listening ear and helping hand to those in need, sharing her laughter and love of dance with everyone, and was very close to her beloved grandmother Ruth.
Jeannie was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Gayhardt.
She is survived by her husband, Carlos Casanova, her daughter Stephanie Woodall Miller with her husband Brandon Miller, her son David Casanova, her mother and stepfather Charlene and Larry Vaughn, her sister Jennifer Woodall Jackson, her stepbrother David Vaughn, and her siblings Eddie Woodall, Misty Garriss, Adam Gayhardt and Stevie Gayhardt, as well as many loving aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins who miss her greatly.
Her family invites you to join them for her viewing 6:00pm on Saturday, May 24th, which will be followed by a celebration of her life at 7:00pm, at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service, 1411 North Howe Street, Southport NC.
