SHELBY — Mr. Robert Ramsaur Forney, 89, of 210 Fairway Drive, passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002. Born in Burke County, Sept. 18. 1912, and reared in Cleveland County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Charles D. and Frances Ramsaur Forney; two brothers, Charles Forney Jr. and Tom Forney; and two sisters, Minnie Anna Forney and Mamie Lou Bridges. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Irvin Forney; three sisters-in-law, Martha Lane Forney, Frances Forney and Alise Irvin; five nieces; and 13 nephews and their families. He graduated from Piedmont High School, Boiling Springs Junior College and Wake Forest University. He has been a member of First Baptist Church for 50 years, where he served as deacon, chairman of the finance committee and was an active member of the Paul Wilson Bible Class. His tour of duty in World War II was in Europe, where he served in the Signal Corps. He began his business career with Lily Mills Co., which became Belding Lily after a merger with Belding Hemingway in New York. From 1966 until his retirement in 1978, he was president and C.E.O. of Belding Lily and served on the Corporate Board of Belding Hemingway. He was director of the board of the American Thread Institute, a member of the New Comer Society of North America. He was on the board of trustees at Wake Forest University in the 1970s. He was always interested in civic and community activities. He was an active member of the Shelby Rotary Club serving as president in 1955-56. He served on the board of trustees of Cleveland Memorial Hospital. He helped with the organization of the Cleveland County Boys Club. A member of the board of advisers at Gardner-Webb University, a director on the Foundation of the Carolina’s Board. He served on the board of directors of First National Bank for 25 years. A graveside service will be today at 10:30 a.m. in Sunset Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Tench and Dr. Chris White officiating with visitation after the service in the church vestibule. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 120 N. SHELBY — Mr. Skyler Daniel Day, 17, of 1627-1 Rehobeth Church Road, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at his home. Born April 26, 1985, in Wake County, he was a student at Burns High School. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, F.F.A. at Burns High School and was the Time Warner Hero from Burns High School in April 2002. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Vickey Church and Gene Grayson of the home; his father, Danny Day of Raleigh; a sister, April Grayson of Shelby; a half brother, Brandon Day of Raleigh; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Church of Shelby; his parental grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherill Pleasants of Coats; a great-grandmother, Beulah Evans of Forest City; and his stepgrandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William T. Grayson of Shelby. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Union Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Shumate and Cecil Buff officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Alma Inez Hargett Peterson, 90, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Oak Grove Health Care Center. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Second Baptist Church. CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Thomas B. Patterson, 56, of 733 Old Post Road, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Cleveland County on Dec. 14, 1945, the son of the late Ralph and Pauline Patterson Harris. He graduated from John Chavis High School class of 1963 and from N.C. A&T State University with a bachelor of science in business administration. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. He was employed at Eastern Airlines for 19 years in reservations and worked at Freightliner. He organized and was president of the John Chavis Alumni and member of the Yuletide Club. Survivors are his wife, Betty H. Patterson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marian and Brian Hopper of Snellville, Ga., and Stephanie and Torraine Williams of Durham; and four grandchildren, Cheyenne B. Hopper, Desmond O’Brian Hopper, Chelsea Hopper and Miles Williams. The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Cherryville, with Pastor Roger W. Fuller officiating. Burial will be in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Eva Lee DePriest Hudson, 87, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Bynam DePriest and Ella Mae Jackson Hennessee and widow of William Horace Hudson. She was a retired textile employee. She was also preceded in death by sons, William Fred Hudson and Andrew Hudson and infant son, Russell Howard Hudson; one brother, Andrew DePriest; and two grandchildren, Steve Hudson and Robert Hudson. She is survived by a son, Horace Lee Hudson of Forest City; a daughter, Sarah Thelma Lankford of Shelby; two half brothers, Floyde Hennessee of Charleston, S.C., and Claude Hennessee of Rutherfordton; two half sisters, Faye Bowen of Shelby and Jean Campbell of Hickory; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Rev. David Reep officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

CHERRYVILLE — Miss Ellen Beam Carroll, 86, of 201 Harbor View Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at her home. Born July 18, 1916, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late W.B. Carroll and Gadie Beam Carroll. She was a member of Waco Baptist Church, The Herb Society of America, The Foothills Herb Society, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and retired from the Department of Defense. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joyce B. Carroll. She is survived by a sister, Wilda C. Davis of Cherryville; two nieces, Joyce Posey and husband, Curtis, of Shelbyville, Tenn., and Rhoda St. John and husband, Mark, of Cherryville; a great-niece; a great-nephew; and two great-great-nephews. A graveside service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Capernaum Cemetery in Waco with the Rev. Ernie Tatum officiating. Dean Hayek
ASHEVILLE — Mr. Dean Harrison Hayek, Ph.D., 71, died Thursday, August 15, 2002, in Asheville, after a short battle with cancer. Born Jan. 1, 1931, in Waukesha, Wis., he was the son of Charles E. and Anne Dundas Hayek. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mary Jane Geigner; and a sister, Doris. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He received his bachelor of science from the University of Wisconsin and masters of science and doctor of philosophy from the University of Tennessee. He taught physiology at the Medical College of Virginia before joining the faculty at the newly forming East Carolina University School of Medicine in 1970. In 1996, he retired as associate professor emeritus, Brody School of Medicine, after serving as associate dean for Admissions and Student Affairs. After moving to Asheville, he continued to advise students and served as a volunteer for St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Stephen Ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Asheville and Mountain Area Hospice. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Asheville. He is survived by three children and their families: daughter, Kathy Beamer, and her husband, John, and his son, Ross; daughter, Dede “Deanna” Southerland, and her husband, Sherwood, and son, Tyler; and son, Charles Hayek, and his wife, Marcie, and children, Andrew, Meredith and Luke. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Beth Newman officiating. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Ruby Smith Philbeck, 65, of 5010 Tary Court, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at her home. Born April 29, 1937, in Mitchell County, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Bessemer City and a former member of Grace Lutheran Church of Bessemer City. She retired from Kings Mountain Hospital, was a former office and cafeteria worker with Bessemer City Central School and a 1956 graduate of Bessemer City High School. She was preceded in death by her father, J.L. Smith Sr.; and a brother, Keith Smith. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Louis Philbeck of the home; her mother, Vertie Cox Smith Lovelace of Kings Mountain; three children, Renee Philbeck of Bessemer City, Ronnie Philbeck of Salisbury and Chris Philbeck of Winston-Salem; two brothers, J.L. Smith Jr. of Orlando, Fla., and Gene Smith of Claremont; a sister, Boots Milam of Hickory; nephew and niece, Chad and Toshua Smith of Lowell; several nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Richard Brown of Winston-Salem. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Bolin of Kings Mountain; a son, Rian Bolin of Charlotte; a daughter, Lynn B. Berry and husband, Bob, of Pittsboro; her mother, Ruthie Lee Patterson Carroll of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Clyde Carroll of Lexington, Randy Carroll of Clover, S.C., and Donald Carroll of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Becky Carroll and Velma Oliver, both of Kings Mountain; and a granddaughter, Laura Berry.
