Joyce P. Parker

Raleigh-After nearly four months of complications from surgery, Joyce P. Parker, 77, died Tuesday at Mayview Convalescent Center. Mrs. Parker was a native of Princeton, NC, and the daughter of the late Conrad H. and Hattie Lois Parker. She was a very special lady and loved by many. She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Everette; three children; David Parker, Eric Parker, and Debra Parker Mitchell and son-in-law James (Jim) Mitchell; step-son Nelson Parker and wife Pat, and step-son Charles Parker and wife Tricia. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Erica, Megan and Beau Parker, step-grandchildren Laura, Steve, Roy, Rebecca and Rhett; four step-great-grandchildren and a loving sister, Linda Pittman and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her brother, Thaddeus Parker and sister-in-law Irene Parker, and brother-in law, Harold Pittman. Mrs. Parker was a longtime active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 714 E. Whitaker Mill Road, Raleigh, NC 27608. The family wishes to thank the staff of Mayview for their dedicated service and care they gave to this most amazing wife, mother and grandmother. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 4 from 6pm to 8pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road. Service will be Friday, December 5 at 2pm at Bryan-Lee. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.

Evelyn Hart Cooper

RALEIGH – Evelyn Hart Cooper, 60, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 30, at Rex Hospital Hospice Unit in Raleigh following a nine-year battle with breast cancer. Evelyn was born icon in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and grew up in Canada and in Musselborough, Scotland. She graduated from Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener from the Christian Education program. She put this experience to use while home schooling her two children, which for her was both a serious responsibility and a joy. After college graduation, Evelyn served as a missionary with HCJB in Quito, Ecuador and Elkhart, Indiana. Her life was a continuing testimony of faith and generosity. She made friends wherever she was and was known as a kind-hearted person who truly practiced her faith in Christ. She attended Colonial Baptist Church of Cary and was a member of the Open Bible Class. Evelyn was preceded in death by her father, John Hart and half-sister Carol Broeckel. She is survived by her loving husband David; daughter, Lisa Cooper Vest and husband Matthew of Bloomington, Indiana; son, Matthew Cooper and his wife Lynn-Seay of Morrisville; mother, Margaret Hart of Ontario, Canada and brother John Hart of Alberta, Canada. funeral service will be held December 3, Wednesday, at 11:00 AM in the chapel at Colonial Baptist Church in Cary. The family will receive friends at the church after the funeral service. Burial will follow at Wake Memorial Park, Cary. Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday December 2, 2008 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colonial Baptist Church Outreach Ministry 6051 Tryon Rd. Cary, NC 27518 or Hospice of Wake County 1300 St. Mary’s St. Ste. 400 Raleigh, NC 27605.

Kathleen Best Bailey

Kathleen Best Bailey, 88, of Raleigh died Friday. Mrs. Bailey was a native of Rocky Mount and the daughter of the late John William Best and Mattie Brown Best. She resided in Raleigh since 1925, and was educated at the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh. In December of 1940, she married the late Frank Earl Bailey. In 1981, she retired after 26 years of service as an inspector at Westinghouse. Mrs. Bailey was a long-time active member of Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, where she served as a deacon and elder. She was an officer and member of the following organizations: Raleigh Pilot Club; Methodist Orphanage Alumni Association; Lions Park Senior’s Club; North Raleigh Woman’s Club; and a past president of the Thompson School PTA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, G. E. Bailey. Mrs. Bailey is survived by her son, Jim Bailey and his wife, Bonnie of Raleigh; granddaughter, Anna – Lisa Bailey, and grandson, Brian Austin Bailey, both of Raleigh. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831Wake Forest Rd., next to the Mordecai House in Raleigh. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1950 New Bern Ave. The Rev. Aleta Ash will be officiating. Burial will follow at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.

CLAYTON – Terry Lynn Stephenson, 49, of 145 George Wilton Drive, a network engineer with EPA - Research Triangle Park, died Friday. Funeral Services will be 3:00 PM Sunday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Surviving wife, Kim Beasley Stephenson; sons, Zackary Lynn Stephenson and Matthew Jordan Stephenson; parents, Lynn F. Stephenson and Brookie Wiggins Stephenson of Angier; sister, Beverly Stephenson Peters and her husband, Bill of Willow Spring; nieces, April and Brandi Baker of Willow Spring. Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Garner. Contributions may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 15772 NC Hwy 50 North, Garner, NC, 27529. James Ray Barnes

James Ray Barnes, 53, of Garner died Friday at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Ray was a native of Garner and the son of the late Beulah Smith Barnes and Nelson Barnes who survives him. He was employed for many years with the family business, Barnes Paint and Wallpaper Co. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Montlawn Memorial Park. In addition to his father, he is survived by his three sisters, Gail Dunn and husband, Benjie of Raleigh, Sandra Barnes and Diane Barnes, both of Garner; his fiancé, Cindy Lee of Garner; a nephew and niece; and three great nephews.

James G. “Jim” Tench Jr.

James G. “Jim” Tench Jr., 64, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at Duke University Hospital. Jim was born icon in Huntington, WV, the son of James G. Tench Sr., and the late Anne Cartwright Tench. Jim grew up in Sarasota, FL, and received his high school education at Sarasota High. As a teenager, he was a tight rope walker in the Sailor Circus, and he seemed to forever approach life with a similar daring and zeal. He also had a talent for woodworking and invention--even having a boat design (called Pogo) featured in Popular Mechanic magazine. He went on to attend Georgia Technical Institute where he obtained his bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. Jim had an early career with NASA, and was privileged to work on the team responsible for the Saturn V rocket guidance system (he was always shooting for the moon). He then joined IBM where he spent the majority of his career — retiring after 30 years of a job he loved. His innovative mind flourished at IBM, and he held numerous patents for inventions in printing, imaging systems, and audio technologies. A Service of Celebration and Resurrection will be held on Saturday, December 6th, 11:00 a.m.., at Holy Trinity Church, located in the chapel of St. David’s School in Raleigh, NC. Jim is survived by his father, James G. Tench Sr.; wife, Cynthia Ann Tench; son, James E. Tench and wife, Kesslyn; son, Michael L. Tench; grandchildren, Riley and Ashley Tench; and his dog, Tuppence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Church (administrative office: 879-A Washington Street., Raleigh, NC 27605). Contributions will be directed to Holy Trinity Church, Caring Bridge and Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis. Arrangements by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd. Raleigh.

Raleigh. Mr. Talbott is survived by his wife, Laura M. Talbott; son, Franklin E. Talbott, Sr. and daughter, Barbara J. Talbott Taylor.

Angier- Charles Elbert Cox, 76, of 9785 NC Hwy 210, died Sunday. A native of Cumberland County he was the son of the late Alexander and Mary Ellen Herring Cox. Charles was a veteran of the Korean War and was formerly employed with the Jacksonville, Florida Sheriff’s Department as a deputy and also with the Fayetteville, NC Sheriff’s Department. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Sandra Williams Cox, step-daughter, Sheila Laningham and husband, Brian of Springfield, IL; step-sons, Shane Ford and wife, Hannah of Charleston, SC; Roger Wilhoite of Bellingham, WA; sister, Lillian Cox Long of Richmond, VA; step-grandchildren, Benjamin Ford and Collin Laningham. The family will receive friends 12:00 -1:00 pm, one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Baptist Church in Angier on Wednesday at 1:00 PM with burial to follow at Cross Creek Cemetery, Fayetteville.

RALEIGH — Sarah Lee Peed, 87, of 2616 Cherry Circle, died Monday. A native of New Hanover Co. she was the daughter of the late George Thomas and Evelana Johnson Stewart. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday at Carolina Pines Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park. She is survived by her sons, Tommy Glenn Peed and his wife, Nancy of Raleigh, Tony Andrew Peed and his wife, Vanesa of Youngsville and George Peed and his friend, Cynthia Conner of Raleigh; sisters, Hilda Ann Willetts, Martha Isabelle Saunders and Fannie Mae Pate all of Wilmington; brother, Hubert E. Stewart of Wilmington; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.. Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Memorial contributions may be made to Carolina Pines Baptist Church, 2655 South Saunders Street, Raleigh, NC, 27603.

A native of Roxboro she was the daughter of the late, Francis “Red” and Elsie Brown Whitlock. funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Surviving; husband of 36 years, Phil Creech; daughter, Lisa McAlister and her husband, Jeff of Raleigh and step daughter, Toni Keplinger and her husband, Scott of Durham; sisters, Alice Grinstead, Peggy Suchil, Janice Bechtel and Judy Evans all of Roxboro; grandchildren, Jerica Brandon, Haley Brandon, Jacob Keplinger and Zachery Keplinger; great granddaughter, Adriana Penunuri. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake Co., 1300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

GARNER – Alice Jean Smith, 63, passed away on Sunday. A native of Wake County, she was the daughter of Iona Sanderford Smith and the late Alonzo Braxton Smith. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday at Mt. Herman Christian Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00- 2:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In addition to her mother, Miss Smith is survived by her brothers, Braxton Smith of New Port, Roy Smith and his wife, Tina of Garner, Zeb Smith and his wife, Kay of Knightdale and Donald Smith of Garner; sister, Deborah Bunn and her husband, Tony of Clayton: special friend and caregiver, Sherri Mann. She was predeceased by brothers, Clyde Smith and James Smith.

GARNER - Janet Pollett Stocks, 62, went home on Nov. 22, 2008, after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was a devoted Christian, loving family member and friend to all who knew her. She will be missed, but never forgotten. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday at Highland Baptist Church, 8524 Crowder Rd. Raleigh. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the Church. Burial will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens, Raleigh. She is survived by her husband, Wayne A. Stocks; son Kevin Stocks and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Danielle, Ashley and Nichole Lovejoy; father, Bertram George Pollett and three brothers Raymond, George and Richard Pollett and their families. She was predeceased by her mother, Ruth H. Pollett. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Cancer Charity of you choice.
