ELLENBORO — Mrs. Elva Allen Bridges, 95, died Saturday, Aug.17, 2002, at Autumn Care of Forest City. A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late James Vernon and Olia Daniel Allen. She retired from Doncaster, and was a member of Ellenboro W.O.W. and Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Monroe Bridges; and a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Glenn Powell. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Boyce and Martha Ann Bridges of Cramerton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Maurice Houser of Cliffside and Hazel Ann and Bobby Setzer of Cullowee; two brothers, James Vernon Allen of Ellenboro and Claude Allen of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Edmond Leroy Geer, 48, of 720 Gilmer Edwards Road, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. A native of Rutherford County, he was born Oct. 31, 1953, the son of the late Lionel and Mary Fortune Geer. He was a graduate of R-S Central High School and Isothermal Community College. He was a carpenter for Gayla Productions and employed by AGI Industries for 25 years. He belonged to Mount Vernon Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Edmund Leroy Geer. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Ponniesaes Craig Geer of Rutherfordton; a son Walter Solomon “Buster” Geer of Rutherfordton; an uncle, Lowell Geer of Rutherfordton; and three aunts, Geraldine Cash and Norma Clontz, both of Charlotte, and Lucy Ellis of Bostic. The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne White and Gregg Hathaway officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. A native of Kings Mountain in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Thomas George and Maggie Carol Runyans. He was retired from Westvaco Corp. and was a Baptist. He is survived by his wife, Pat Bright Runyans; two sons, Tony Runyans of Kings Mountain and David Burton of Shelby; six daughters, Jane Bingham of Gastonia, Joann Green of Kings Mountain, Susie Hawkins of Grover, Tonya Curry of Gastonia, Glenda Bowen of Kings Mountain and Tammy Burton of Bessemer City; a brother, Clarence Willie Runyans of Kings Mountain; a sister, Minnie Elizabeth Kaps of Clover, S.C.; 23 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Gordon Mortuary, Blacksburg, S.C., with the Rev. Mickey Heyward officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Henderson W. Herndon, 83, of 1311 S. Battleground Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late John Maxie and Lenora Blalock Herndon. He was retired from Sterchi’s Furniture Store after 35 years of service. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Allran Herndon; and four brothers, Fred Herndon, Carl Herndon, Bratton Herndon and Hord Herndon; and a sister, Lightal Wells. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bill W. and Norma Herndon of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Brenda A. Herndon of Hendersonville; two grandsons, Brad Herndon and his wife, April, and Brent Herndon, all of Kings Mountain. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Luther O. “Luke” Caveny, 81, of 506 Dixon School Road died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury. He was born in Cherokee County, S.C., son of the late John L. and Nora Spurling of Caveny. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, where he was an honorary deacon. Retired from Sadie Mills in Kings Mountain and during World War II he served in the Army in the Philippines. He is survived by his wife, Parthenia M. Caveny of Kings Mountain; three daughters, Carolyn Bowman of Gold Hill, Rita Mangum of Wilson and Kathleen Kimmons of Floamington, Ala.; a brother, Marvin R. “Pete” Caveny of Kings Mountain; three sisters, Bertie Ham and Evelyn Graham, both of Kings Mountain, and Letha Shepard of Blacksburg, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Heidi C. SANTA MARIA, Calif. — Mrs. Fay Greer McMullen, 77, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in Santa Maria, after a long struggle with cancer. She was born on June 27, 1925, in Newton, to Margaret Kidd and Samuel Thiral Greer. She grew up in Shelby, graduating from Shelby High School in 1942. During her years in Shelby she volunteered her time to numerous community and youth activities. In 1960 she moved to Silver Spring, Md., and later to California, where she enjoyed the sun and beaches. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Bill; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Charlie Markline of Santa Maria; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Jane Woods of Gaithersburg, Md., and Steve and Jackie Woods of Carmel, Calif.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Sam and Iris Greer, Richard and Sarah Greer and Doug Greer, all of Shelby; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Anne and George Banta of Orlando, Fla., Marjorie and Bob Rainey of Rockingham and Peggy Percival of Rock Hill, S.C.; two stepchildren; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
