Chip Greene
FOREST CITY — Chip Greene, 24, a native of Rutherford County, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002. Chip had a good heart, a passion for life, family and friends he loved — and who loved him. He resided at 410 Weatherstone Drive. He was a 1996 graduate of R-S Central High School and was attending Isothermal Community College. He is survived by his parents, Rose Greene of Forest Lake Road and Hubert Greene of Greene Boat and Motor, Spindale; a brother, Andy Greene and his wife, Christina; a sister, Sandra Loganadan and her husband, Nick; Chip’s fiance, Andrea Whisnant; and two nephews, Ian and Kyle Loganadan. He was preceded in death by a brother, Todd Dysart. The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Home. A ceremony to honor Chip’s life will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 2676 Hudlow Road, Forest City.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Ruth Hamrick Phillips, 89, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Hillcrest Rest Home. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Carnette Huffstetler Poplin, 93, of 615 N. Piedmont Ave., and former resident of Gastonia, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at The Haven in Pineville. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Matthews Lutheran Church with Dr. Edgar Cooper officiating. A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. at Gaston Memorial Park. Sam Tallent
LAWNDALE — Mr. Sam Tallent, 83, of 2627 Curt Ledford Road, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 9. 1919, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late James Augustus and Sally Junie Miller Tallent. He retired from Marvin S. Beam Ford in Cherryville as sales manager. He attended Zion Hill Baptist Church and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Shelby, the Society of Professional Sales Managers and former chairman and member of the board of directors of Casar Volunteer Fire Department. He also served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mozelle McCurry Tallent of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, June and Gary Mull of Lawndale; three sisters, Betty Mosteller and Edna Tallent, both of Morganton and Helen Tallant of Lenoir; a granddaughter and husband, Sherry and Joe Jensen of Lawndale; and a grandson, Joe Mull of Lawndale. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Revs. Burl Sain and Darrin Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. WARRENTON — Mr. Aaron Marcus Allen, 79, passed away Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. Mr. Allen was a Cleveland County native born Oct. 18, 1922, son of the late Irvin Marion and Maude Weathers Allen. Mr. Allen was owner and operator of Warren Auto Parts for 35 years, he was a member of the Warrenton Baptist Church and served in the Navy. The Revs. David Brooks and Jody Wright will conduct services at 4 p.m. Saturday at Warrenton Baptist Church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Harriett Owens Allen; three sons, Irvin M. “Marty” Allen of Shelby, Aaron Marcus Allen II and Cecil Craig Allen, both of Warrenton; one brother, Wiley H. Allen of Kings Mountain; five sisters, Adelaide A. Hamrick of Shelby, Betty A. DeVeney of Kings Mountain, Nancy A. Danielson of Orlando, Fla., Barbara A. Bridges of Kings Mountain and Freida A. Hawkins of Shelby; and five grandchildren, Raymond Anderson Allen, Claudia Kathryn Allen, Emily Brooks Allen, Tiffany Nicole Allen and Bridgette Alexandria Allen. SPINDALE — Mrs. Martha Freeman Scoggin, 88, of Iowa Avenue, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at Oakland Living Center. A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Anna Kate Logan Freeman. She was a member of Spencer Baptist Church and retired from Doncaster Inc. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Earl Scoggin. She is survived by a son, Michael Scoggin and his wife, Paula, of Rutherfordton; a daughter, Anna Lancaster and her husband, Paul, of Shelby; four grandchildren, Heather Sprouse and her husband, Michael, Rusty Scoggin, Laura Melton and her husband, Todd, and Jason Lancaster and his wife, Kimberly; and two great-grandchildren. SHELBY — Mrs. Ruby Archie, 60, of 240 W. Grover St., Apartment 8, departed this life Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was born April 23, 1942, the daughter of the late Nellie Sue Gaston and Perry Dewberry. She was retired from Doran Textiles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Archie Sr.; and her grandparents, Dora Gaston and Hugh Cobb. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dora A. and Larry Robbs and Betty A. Archie, all of Shelby; a son, Robert L. Archie Jr. of Shelby; a maternal son, Ernest V. Archie, and his wife, Lula, of Columbus, Ga.; five grandchildren, Kimberly Dewberry of Charlotte, Samantha and Darrius Archie of Shelby and Geranda and Gerrell Archie of Kings Mountain; a special niece, Loretta Belk of Charlotte; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Jack E. Hardin
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Mr. Jack Everette Hardin, 77, of 96 Delray Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at his home after an extended illness. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Robert Curtis and Ella Clark Hardin. He retired from A & P Tea Company, with 32 years of service and later worked with Ingles, Piggly-Wiggly, Harris-Teeter and also with the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, the E. Gibson Davis Sunday School Class and had sung in several quartets for over 20 years. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Doris Huffstetler Hardin of the home; one son, the Rev. Larry Everette Hardin and wife, Jo Carol, of Mauldin; two daughters, Jackie Hardin Philbeck and husband, Jerry, of Shelby and Pamela Hardin Moore and husband, Harold, of Moore; one brother, Ben A. Hardin of Boiling Springs; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Landford-Pollard Chapel conducted by his son, the Rev. Larry E. Hardin and the Rev. Dale Thornburg. A committal service will follow at 1 p.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain conducted by the Rev. Bill Adams. She was a native of Cleveland County, a daughter of the late C.I. and Mattie Gillespie Bailey. She retired from Shelby Police Department as Sergeant. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Trinity Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Paul R. Toney of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Arvin Putnam of Mooresboro; two brothers, Ed Bailey and Buren Bailey and wife, Judy, all of Mooresboro. Nolan and Greathel Borders Nolan. She retired from Albert Turner Plumbing as office manager and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Turner; and a brother, Clarence Nolan Jr. She is survived by three sons and three daughters-in-law, Doug and Linda Turner of Asheville, Gary and Gwen Turner of Shelby and Mike and Debbie Turner of Cherryville; two sisters, Catherine Nolan and Emily Poston, both of Shelby; eight grandchildren, Doug Turner Jr., Annette Burkhard, Jeanna Turner, Karin Cook, Mark Turner, Allison Bowers, Cliff White and Crystal Turner; and seven great-grandchildren. SHELBY — Mrs. Verlee Vernishamae Roberts Mask, 72, of 2338 Hoey Church Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Ben and Nellie Aldrich and retired from the City of Kings Mountain Recreation Department, after 27 years of service. She managed Davidson Swimming Pool and worked in many other capacities at the Kings Mountain Community Center. She was a member of Bynum Chapel AME Zion Church, where she served on the steward, ushers and missionary boards. She was a member of Adah Chapter number 7 Order of the Eastern Star, life time member of the NAACP, Emma V. Kelly Temple number 748, Daughters of the I.B.P.O.E. of W. Shelby. She was preceded in the death by her son, Curtis Lee Roberts; two brothers, John and Louise Aldrich; and one sister, Precola Evertt. She is survived by her husband, Gaither Mask of the home; two daughters, Brenda Aldrich Osborne and husband, Terry, and Sandra Aldrich Alston; God-daughter, Debra Crocker and husband, Archie; brothers, Henry and Sue, Bowman and Joan, Bill, all of Philadelphia, Wilber Mack and Albert of Gastonia, Wilard Joe and Dottie of Teaneck, N.J., B.R. Allen Sellers
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Allen Sellers, 67, of 3321 Tryon Courthouse Road, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 20, 2002, after a brief stay at Lincoln Medical Center. Allen was born Dec. 11, 1934, to B.T. “Buford” Sr. and Virginia Brackett Sellers who preceded him in death, along with one brother who died in infancy. After 42 years with Carolina Freight Carriers, Allen retired and spent his time doing the things he enjoyed most. These included spending time with his wife of 48 years, who was his lifelong love, best friend and cherished companion, his three beloved daughters and their families. An avid lover of the outdoors, he was seldom found inside. Mostly, he tended his yard, his birds and anything else that could be done in nature. Allen was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cherryville, a Third Degree Master Mason, Lodge 505 of Cherryville, Scottish Rites and Shriner’s Oasis Temple of Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Lib” Hewett Sellers; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Randy Patterson of Kings Mountain, Terrie and Bruce Jarrett of Clemson, S.C., Donna and Terry Price of Kings Mountain. Allen was affectionately known as “Pops” to six granddaughters, one grandson-in-law and one great-granddaughter, Heather Patterson Payne and Tommy Payne, Jennifer Patterson, Brittany Prince, Haley Prince, Caroline Jarrett, Ashley Jarrett and little Catie Payne; one brother and sister-in-law, B.T. Jr. and Rosie Mae Sellers of Cherryville; and one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Cedo Black, also of Cherryville; two nieces and one nephew. The family will receive friends at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home tonight from 6:30 to 8:30. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. James L. Pyatt and Jack H. Cooke at First United Methodist Church in Cherryville at 3 p.m. on Friday. Burial will be in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Cherryville, with full Masonic Rites.
