Plummer came to Goldsboro in 1957 during the reactivation of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base which had been closed at the end of World War II. He served in Air Force Fighter and Bomber Wings during his active duty tour. While attending college, he served in an active Air Force Reserve Squadron that was tasked with recovering and debriefing combat bomber crews in the aftermath of a nuclear conflict.
Because of his close ties in the Goldsboro community during his military service, Plummer returned to join the news department of WGBR-WEQR radio. He spent 37 years as a reporter and editor in radio, television news and newspapers and operated an aerial photography business. He retired in 1998 as Editor of the former Eastern Carolina Times-Inquirer. A lifelong musician, Plummer played saxophone with several jazz, rock & roll, and beach music bands in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
During his long journalistic career, Plummer covered the courts and law enforcement, city, county and state government, city and county schools and higher education. He was particularly active in covering and promoting local fire and rescue agencies, farming and agricultural enterprise, military and veteran affairs, and aerospace and general aviation.
At the height of the war in Vietnam, he worked closely with the late Mrs. Billie Hiteshew of Goldsboro and others in establishing the National League of Families’ POW-MIA movement.
While a reporter with the Goldsboro News-Argus, Plummer won First Place North Carolina Press Awards in 1969 and 1973 for his coverage of the war in Vietnam, with a five-part series on the six-year captivity of former prisoner of war, the late Col. James E. Hiteshew of Goldsboro. He won a National Press Award from the Aviation/Space Writers Association in 1977 for his feature article on the UFO Phenomenon.
While News Director at WFMC radio, Plummer won a First Place UPI Carolinas Broadcast Award for his extensive coverage of the historic tornado that struck southern Wayne County in the spring of 1984.
He was presented numerous awards and citations from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Secretary of Defense Award for outstanding service and promotion of world peace during Cold War years. He was also awarded an Air Force Exceptional Service award for outstanding support of the Air Force Recruiting Service and the promotion of peace through air power.
He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, promoting the Girl Scout program, and was presented more than 40 local, state and national awards and citations from those organizations and others, including the Red Cross, Chamber of Commerce, Wayne County Schools, Wayne Community College, Wayne County Fireman’s Association, Goldsboro Rescue Squad, Wayne Memorial Hospital, and Wayne County Mental Health Association.
Plummer also extensively covered agriculture during his career, especially the once-thriving Goldsboro Tobacco Market and the growing swine and poultry markets. He published several national magazine stories and photo spreads of major changes in those farm industries which had roots in Wayne County. He personally covered the congressional signing of the historic tobacco Acreage-Poundage program in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Plummer was a longtime member of American Legion Post 11 in Goldsboro and was active in promoting the post and its baseball program. He produced an annual baseball magazine and served as Post Athletic Officer.
Plummer was a former member of the National Association of Broadcasters, N.C. Association of Broadcasters, Society of Professional Journalists, Aviation/Space Writers Association, Professional Photographers Association, Air Force Association, and N.C. Press Association.
Plummer was a lifelong motorcycle rider, avid promoter of the biker lifestyle and former member of the Ghost Riders Motorcycle Club of Wayne County.
