Lillian Davis
CLIFFSIDE — Miss Lillian Davis, 78, of 211 Lake Hill Farm Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Rutherford County, a daughter of the late Henry V. Sr. and Nora Byrd Davis. She retired from Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant, and was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church. She is survived by one brother, Sam Davis of Shelby; two sisters, Juanita Smith of Cliffside and Perrie Cargill of Forest City; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. in Cliffside Cemetery with the Revs. Larry Fleming and William Stroud officiating. Ruby Ann Bradshaw
SHELBY — Ms. Ruby Ann Archie Bradshaw, 86, went home to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was born May 15, 1915. She lived in Manhattan, N.Y., for more than 40 years. While there she was a member of the Greater Tabernacle Baptist Church for more than 40 years and served faithfully as deaconess, worked with Willing Hands and the Pastor’s Aide Committee. She decided to return back to North Carolina to spend her last years with her family here in Shelby. She moved her membership to Hopewell Baptist Church in Shelby. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Michael E. Bradshaw; two sons, Michael Jr. and William “Bill” Bradshaw; three sisters, Sarah, Mabel Lee and Ella Mae; three grandsons, Robert Jr., Tony and Toby. She leaves to cherish precious memories six sons, Robert Bradshaw of Lawndale, James and Ben Bradshaw of Shelby, Jessie and Leon Bradshaw of New York, N.Y. and Elder John H. Bradshaw of Gastonia; a daughter, Ellwease B. Ussery of the home; a devoted and loving sister, Rosetta A. Borders of Winston-Salem; 34 grandchildren; 94 great-grandchildren; 100 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral will be Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Roseboro officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. LAWNDALE — Mr. Teyreze NeShun Odoms, 17, of 106 Douglas St., departed this life Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 1, 1985, the son of Debora Odoms of the home and Calvin “Donald” Stroud of Kingstown. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ella Mae Thurmond Odoms, and paternal grandmother, Mary Virginia Stroud. In addition to his parents, he leaves to cherish fond memories a son, Tajae Maleek Odoms of Shelby; four sisters, Jasmine Odoms of the home, Anesha Clark of Lawndale, Shonda Stroud of Kings Mountain, Trokisha Spikes of Austin, Texas; six brothers, Montrell Odoms, TyShun Odoms and Nijahl Odoms, all of the home, and Orlando Daniels of Kingstown, Tyree Parks of Claremont and Calvin Glenn of Shelby; his grandfathers, Charles Stroud of Lawndale and “R.L.” Odoms of Polkville; a special friend, Jada Cline of Shelby; a special aunt, Sandra “Nise” Odoms of Shelby; and a host of uncles, aunts and other relatives and friends. VALE — Mr. Lester Phillip Wright, 85, formerly of 9192 N. N.C. 10, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Belaire Health Care Center in Gastonia. Born Sept. 25, 1916, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Ava Phillip Wright and Linnie Emmaline Leonhardt Wright. He retired from PPG as tow operator and was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Wright and Edgar Wright; and two sisters, Alice Wright and Genelia McSwain. He is survived by a brother, Columbus Wright of Gaffney, S.C.; two sisters, Clara Beattie of Kings Mountain and Kimmie Durbin of Fallston; two special nieces and their husbands, Joyce and Virgil Welch of Gastonia and Judy and Steven Noble of Charlotte; and three special great-nephews, Matthew and Adam Welch, both of Gastonia, and Christian Noble of Charlotte. The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church with the Revs. H.L. Talbert and Patricia Humphries-Bivens officiating. POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. — Mrs. Mabel Young Ward, 92, formerly of Shelby, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at the Brian Center in Powder Springs, Ga. She was a homemaker, member of Shelby Presbyterian and the daughter of the late Bascomb Whitfield and Edna Cox Young. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roberd Wade Ward. She is survived by her daughter, Hilda W. Towery of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. A.M. Evans of Marion; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Edna Brantley Green of the home; his mother, Mora Pratt Green Furr of Beaufort, S.C.; his stepmother, Gladys Green of Rochester, N.H.; a son and daughter-in-law, David Jr. and Alicia Green of Wilmington; a sister, Debbie Williams of Greenville, S.C.; and a grandson, Ian Green of Wilmington. SHELBY — Mr. Myron Charles Valcore Jr., 78, of 1924 Carolyn Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born in Penfield, N.Y., he was a son of the late Myron C. Sr. and Nellie Steele Valcore of Canada. He retired as Electrical Engineer of FASCO Industries. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Frank Bridges Sunday School Class and Calvary Outreach Ministry. He graduated from the University of Texas at Houston with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Freida Crotts Valcore of the home; three sons, David Valcore and wife, Kathy, of Carmel, Ind., John Valcore and wife, Louise, of Cayahoga Falls, Ohio, and Gary Valcore of Ellenboro; a stepson, Eric Carpenter of Raleigh; two daughters, Michelle Fullerton and husband, Jim, of Apex and Sue Whisnant of Shelby; two stepdaughters, Kim Johnson and husband, Phil, and Terri Price and husband, Donnie, all of Shelby; a sister, Joyce Wilkinson of Penfield, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Elizabeth Hopper
SHELBY — Mrs. Elizabeth Morrison Hopper, 91, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Blue Ridge Health Care Center in Raleigh. Born Jan. 8, 1911, in Cleveland County, she was a lifelong resident of Shelby. She was the daughter of Charles Avery Morrison and Emma Lowman Morrison and had three older brothers and three younger sisters. She attended Shelby High School and University of North Carolina at Greensboro (then Woman’s College), where she majored in English and biology. Returning to Shelby, she married James Madison Hopper, son of Stough Hopper and Margaret London Hopper. She taught biology for many years at Shelby High School, was active in the First Baptist Church and the Shelby Girl Scouts, helping to found a senior scouting troop. Her hobby was gardening and she enjoyed growing vegetables, African violets and orchids. She loved travel, especially to the National Parks in the western United States. A favorite summer destination was Alaska, where she and her husband enjoyed camping and fishing for salmon. Over the years her daughter and friends, nieces, nephews, grandsons and other relatives accompanied them on trips. She was preceded in death by her husband James Hopper; brothers, Clarence Morrison of Shelby, Ellis Morrison of Rowland and Ivey Morrison of Atlanta; and a sister, Jeanette Morrison Coble of Laurinburg. Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Hopper Levi and husband, Michael, of Raleigh; two grandsons, Mark Levi and wife, Sue, of Charlotte and Keith Levi and wife, Patti Cameron, of Asheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Vernie Morrison Morehead and Julian Morehead of Shelby; a sister, Louise Morrison Farish of Columbia, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Perry Holleman officiating. Interment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.
