Doris Murphy Malpass
May 18, 1949 - January 7, 2018
Doris Jean Murphy Malpass, 68, of the Indian Springs community, Mount Olive, passed away Sunday, January 7, at her home.
Services will be held Wednesday, January 10, at 2 p.m. at Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Richard Cuddington, with visitation following.
Doris is survived by her husband, Ellis Malpass; two sons, Scotty A. Glass of Mount Olive, and Gary Lynn Malpass and wife, Paula, of Mount Olive; four daughters, Crystal Holland and husband, Kenneth Ray, of Selma, Michelle Malpass-Knipe of Morehead City, Christina Malpass and fiancé, Lynn Gathings of Vanceboro, and Stephanie Hunt and husband, Michael, of Seagrove; daughter-in-law, Theresa Miller of Morehead City; a sister, Donna Erickson and companion, Dennis Evans of Mount Olive; 29 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Sgt. David Thomas Miller, Jr.; a grandchild, Jessica Moore; and her parents, Andrew Irvine Murphy and Doris Louise Williams Murphy.

Billy Douglas Herring
July 29, 1946 - December 3, 2017
Mount Olive -- Billy Douglas Herring, 71, 339 Tram Rd., left his earthly life to live forever with Jesus Sunday morning, December 3, 2017 at home.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 6, at 11 a.m. at Brock's Chapel Church with burial following at the Pate Cemetery. Visitation will be at Tyndall Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 5, from 6 until 9 p.m., and at other times at the home. Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be made to Brock's Chapel Church, c/o Lynwood Herring, 519 Tram Rd., Mount Olive, NC 28365.
Billy was a long time member of Brock's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was on the board of trustees, was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and choir director, and had served in many other capacities through the years. He had been a volunteer fireman with Oak Wolfe Fire Department in years past and had just recently stepped down from serving on its board of directors. He had served for six years in the North Carolina Army National Guard. In 1970, he established Herring Plumbing and Heating which later became Herring Heating and Air, which he and his wife continued to operate until their retirement in 2006, and which is now operated by his son.
He enjoyed fishing, traveling, classic cars, and having a good laugh. He was "carried away" with his grandchildren and great-grandkids, loved his family immensely, and was dedicated to his church and serving the Lord, always taking every opportunity to tell of God's greatness and saving grace.
Billy is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Glenda Whaley Herring, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda H. and David Cooke of Warsaw; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Julia Taylor Herring of Kenansville; six grandchildren, Justin Cooke, Haley Cooke, Dana Herring Turnage and husband, Michael, Amberly Herring, Holly Horne, and Maxton Herring; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Ethan Turnage; a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. James Earl and Doris W. Herring of Mount Olive; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sandra H. Harrell of Mount Olive, Carolyn H. and Ray Bell of Mount Olive, and Bonnie H. and Doug Lambert of Faison; another sister-in-law, Linda Kaye K. Herring of Mount Olive; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Buster and Carol J.Whaley of Mount Olive; brother-in-law, Gerald Holland of Rocky Mount; and much extended family to include nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Hazel Brock Herring; two sisters, Vonda Lee H. Grady and Betty Gray H. Summerlin; and a brother, Donald Ray Herring.

William "W.L" Johnson
December 9, 1954 - November 25, 2017
William Lacy “W.L.” Johnson, 63, of the Calypso community, died early Saturday morning while being cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Senzel and her husband Tom of Florida, and a son, Chris Johnson and his wife Alison of Calypso; a brother, Jo Johnson of Albertson; a granddaughter that was the apple of his eye, Catherine “Scoobie” Johnson; a nephew, Charlie Johnson; two special cousins, J.D. Waters, and Sue Miller; and special friend, Danny Gwaltney.
W.L. was preceded in death by his parents; Albert Leon and Catherine Waters Johnson; and a special sister-in-law, Net Johnson. W.L. was a simple man, who loved his family and spending time in and around the Calypso community. He could often be found around the Beautancus Club pond, or simply hanging at the local Friendly Mart. He had formerly been employed with Tri-County EMC as a lineman.
A service of remembrance will be held on Monday afternoon, November 29, at 4:00pm, at the Calypso Baptist Church in Calypso. The Rev. Greg Day will officiate the service. The family will receive friends immediately following at the church and at other times at the home of his son Chris in Calypso. Memorials may be directed to the church in W.L.’s memory.
William Roy Davenport
May 26, 1952 - December 26, 2017
William Roy Davenport, 65, resident of the Albertson area, died Tuesday night, December 26.
He had been employed with several area poultry farmers and in construction.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Tanner Davenport; his parents, Johnny and Sallie Grace Kornegay Davenport; and two sisters, Brenda Ezzell and Dorothy Cruse.
Those surviving include a brother, James Michael Davenport of Kinston; two sisters, Mary Grace Jarman of Pink Hill and Janice Cruse of Kinston; and several nieces and nephews.
Interment will take place at Oak Ridge Memorial Park at Pink Hill on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, following a 10:00 a.m. graveside service.

William F. "Bill" Andrews
May 23, 1934 - November 26, 2017
William F. "Bill" Andrews, 83, of the Scott's Store community, Mount Olive passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017, at the N.C. State Veterans Home in Kinston surrounded by his loving family.
He retired as sergeant first class with 30 years of service in the U.S. Army and N.C. National Guard, was an engine mechanic, and had been an inspector with Guilford Mills.
He is survived by his children that he loved so much and was so proud of, son Danny F. Andrews, M.D. of Hickory (Jim Graham) and daughter Lovey Andrews of Goldsboro (Keith Jones). He is also survived by a beloved sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bill Teal of Leland, as well as his "little girl" and best companion, Snuggles. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law that were very dear to him.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Faye Marie Bishop Andrews; his parents William Walton and Corena Stilley Andrews; and a sister Peggy Andrews Maready.
Bill was a member of Snow Hill Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee for several years, and thought of all the members of the church as part of his family.
A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, November 29, at 11 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive with burial following at Snow Hill Church Cemetery with full Military Honors. Church pastor Mark S. Hobbs will be the presiding minister.
Flowers are welcome but family prefers donations be made in his honor to the NC State Veteran's Home (2150 Hull Road, Kinston NC 28501) or to Snow Hill FWB Church (c/o Jenean Kennedy, 1571 Red Hill Road, Mount Olive NC 28365).
Sheryl Barwick Newcomb
March 3, 1950 - November 18, 2017
Ms. Grady Sheryl Barwick Newcomb, 67, formerly of the Seven Springs area, passed away Saturday night, November 18, at Vidant Medical Center.
Visitation will be at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, and at other times, the family will be at the home of a son, James Michael Haley, Jr. in the Shine's Crossroads area near Snow Hill.
Services will be Wednesday, November 22, at 1 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Smith Cemetery on Adams Road near Seven Springs. Officiating clergy will be the Rev. Sonny Griswold
Prior to retirement, she had been employed at Woodard's Retirement Center, and in previous years at Med-Stat in Goldsboro.
Sheryl is survived by three children, James Michael Haley, Jr., with whom she had been residing in recent months; John David Haley and wife, Angela Doreen Haley, of Wilson, and Christel Michele McKinney and husband, William Leroy McKinney, of Haslet, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Layton Glen Barwick and Tammy Barwick of Mount Olive; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Carol Morris and Edward Morris of Toano, Virg.; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Barwick of Rocky Mount, widow of deceased brother, Warren David Barwick; her best friend of many years, Diane Coker of Goldsboro; nine grandchildren, Joshua John Haley, Charity Michelle Wooley, Jonathan Paul Haley and spouse, Trenton Haley; Hannah Victoria Haley Ziler and husband, Josh, Roy Brandon Wooley, serving in the U.S.Navy, Harley Marie Haley, Jake Straughan, Lindsay Kaye McKinney, and Gregorey Price McKinney; and five great-grandchildren.
Her parents were the late Grady Barwick and Norma Gray Ezzell Barwick who were residents of the Seven Springs area.

Raymond Boyd Pendergrass
July 25, 1943 - December 5, 2017
Raymond Boyd Pendergrass, 74, known as Ray to most, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at his home.
He was a resident of Mount Olive and worshipped with his wife at Faison Baptist Church.
He was retired from Variety Wholesalers with whom he had been a regional retail manager.
Ray is survived by his wife, Lois Quinn Pendergrass, of the home; a son, Jeff Pendergrass and his wife, Kelly, of Fuquay-Varina; a daughter, Amy Pendergrass and her significant other, Christy Johnson of Belews Creek, NC; and three grandchildren, Sydney, Quinn, and Eli Pendergrass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernel and Esther Pendergrass, and three brothers, Clyde, Carl, and Leon Pendergrass.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, December 10, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, officiated by the Rev. Andy Beard and the Rev. Paul Rose, with burial following at Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home during the hour before the service, and at other times at the residence.

Milton "Dick" Edwards
March 28, 1936 - November 16, 2017
Oscar Milton Edwards, 81, known to many as Dick, life long resident of the Seven Springs area, passed away Thursday morning, November 16.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be Sunday, November 19, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. A private burial will take place in the Melvin Garris Family Cemetery, located adjacent to Pineview Cemetery, Seven Springs.
Candy welcomes family and friends to also reminisce with her at her residence.
A farmer of many years, he enjoyed his employment as a farm maintenance manager with Carolina Turkeys/Envirolink.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otha Milton Edwards and Julia Frances Garris Williams Edwards; a brother, James Kenneth Edwards; a sister, Blanche Williams Wilson; dear uncle and aunts, Paul Barwick “P.B.” Garris, Rachel Garris, and Pennie Edwards.
Surviving family members include his daughter, Candy Edwards Alexander and husband, Rusty, of Seven Springs; two grandsons, Milton Jerry “M.J.” Herring and his special friend, Erin Casey, both of Goldsboro, and James Paul “J.P.” Alexander of Seven Springs; a sister, Marjoray Williams Shivar of Seven Springs, along with her family; a brother-in-law, Joseph Wilson of Mount Olive, along with his family; and special cousins, Donald Williams and wife, Mary, of La Grange, Paula Garris Craig and husband, Bob, of Goldsboro, and Jean Edwards Brinson and husband, L.H. of Richlands; extended family, Millie Edwards of Winston-Salem, and her son, Harley Edwards of Grantham; and a special family friend, Shelton Sutton of Seven Springs.
