FOREST CITY — Mr. Harold Emerson Bailey, 74, of 1693 Rock Corner Road, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict. Rutherford Cremation Service, and Crowe’s Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Boyles
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Joseph Russell Boyles, 92, of 111 Harrelson Road, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Carolina Care after an extended illness. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randi Godfrey officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church before the service. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 6753 Hwy 182, Cherryville, NC 28021, and Carolina Care Center, 111 Harrelson Road, Cherryville, NC 28021. Carpenter’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ida ‘Sis’ Robinson
IRON STATION — Mrs. Ida Rogenia “Sis” Robinson, 62, of 822 A.E. Stover Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Raymond officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. Ebony and White’s Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Hubbard III
GASTONIA — Mr. Robert “Robby” Peeler Hubbard III, 26, of Walker Ridge Apartment 1132-L, Gastonia, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was a member of Kadesh United Methodist Church. He served in the Navy from 1995 to 1997. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Peeler Hubbard Jr., and his grandparents, Robert Sr. and Lois Hubbard and Harold Sr. and Dorothy Reece Ramey. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Carolyn Ramey and Jim Paysour of Kings Mountain; his sister, Iris Camille Hubbard of Wilmington; two stepsisters, Allison Paysour of the home and Frances Houser and her husband, Jonathan, of Raleigh; three aunts and two uncles, Patricia and Ricky Jones of Shelby and Carroll Ann Bingham and Vickie and Mel Beighly of Fallston; an uncle and aunt, Tommy and Susie Ramey of Earl; and several cousins. A graveside service was held at Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery on Saturday with the Rev. Keys Pendelton officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Kadesh United Methodist Church in Gastonia.

CONCORD — Mr. Johnny Adams, 45, of Pine Manor Apartments in Kings Mountain, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Brian Healthcare in Concord. Funeral arrangements will be announced by J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home.

Maralyn Collins
SHELBY — Mrs. Maralyn Collins, 56, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. She was born Nov. 27, 1946. She was employed by BB&T before becoming disabled. She loved her violin, reading books, her dog, Gingi, and her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Chana Burstin of New York; and her husband, Steve Collins of Shelby. She is survived by her son, Douglas Collins of Shelby; her father, Henry Burstin of Bayside, N.Y.; and her brother, Alan Burstin of New York, N.Y. The funeral will be today at Parkside Memorial Chapel in New York. The family will be at the home of Henry Burstin. Arrangements in North Carolina are being made through Cecil Burton Funeral Home and in New York by Parkside Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be made to the leukemia division of the American Cancer Society.

Lala Greene
SHELBY — Mrs. Lala Poston Greene, 75, of Polkville died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Henderson County. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Bessie Green Poston. She retired from Cleveland Mills in 1992 and was a member of Polkville Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, A.P. Poston, J.F. Poston and Robert Poston; four sisters, Helen Poston, Asilee Poston, Lucille Wright and Irene Jones; and a grandchild, Lori Simpson. She is survived by a daughter, Dianne Simpson; a son, Ronnie Greene; a granddaughter, Lisa Jackson; a great-grandson, Brody Hawkins; a great-granddaughter, Holly Jackson; and her sister, Mildred Bridges. Services will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Polkville Baptist Church with the Rev. Alton Martin officiating. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.

Irene Bowman
CASAR — Mrs. Irene Inez Icard Bowman, 85, of 328 Wes Cook Road, formerly of Icard, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born April 25, 1917, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late James Gustavius Icard and Virgil Mae Wilson Icard. She retired from Alba-Waldensian Hosiery and was a member of Warlick’s Baptist Church in Connelly Springs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh “Dick” Vance Bowman; a son, James “Dickey” Bowman; and two brothers, Wayne Icard and Bud Icard. She is survived by a son and two daughters-in-law, Dennis C. and Janice Bowman of Casar and Brenda Bowman of Hildebran; six sisters, Leola Buff of Valdese, Shirley Martin and Marie Gantt, both of Icard, June Carswell of Connelly Springs and Priscilla Shepherd and Kaye Jones, both of Hickory; two granddaughters, Emily Bradshaw of Casar and Michelle Bowman of Winston-Salem; four grandsons, Kiel Bowman of Casar, Spencer Bowman of Hildebran, Todd Bowman of Granite Falls and Dennis M. Bowman of High Shoals; and two great-grandchildren, Chloe Bradshaw and Jaxson Bowman. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest Speagle and the Rev. Zeno Crump officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Warlick’s Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Baptist Church, 337 Hulls Road, Casar, NC 28020. SHELBY — Sahara Desiree McClain, the infant daughter of Jennifer Hovis and Everette McClain, of 607 Deerfield Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Ledford
SHELBY — Mrs. Wilma Camp Ledford, 96, a resident of White Oak Manor, formerly of 215 Lily St., died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Born Oct. 11, 1905, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Edney and Amelia Kendrick Camp. She was a homemaker and member of Second Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Crayton Ledford; a daughter, Marjorie Anthony; and three sons, Bill Ledford, Don Ledford and Dean Ledford. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy Bardwell of New Orleans and Betty and Neal Blanton of Boiling Springs; two daughters-in-law, Margie Ledford and Janice Ledford, both of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Lail officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Margie Ledford, 821 Hill St., Shelby. Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church, 1114 S. Lafayette St., Shelby, NC 28152.

IRON STATION — Mrs. Ida Rogenia Robinson, 62, of 822 A.E. Stover Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

Lillie Mae Taylor
BOSTIC — Mrs. Lillie Mae West Taylor, 97, of 107 Coral Drive, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Padgett and King Mortuary, Forest City. Burial will be in Cool Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Lala Greene
SHELBY — Mrs. Lala Ellen Poston Greene, 75, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.

Mamie Douglas
FOREST CITY — Ms. Mamie Y. Douglas, 56, of 112 Conner St. died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Doggett Grove AME Zion Church with the Rev. James H. Staley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 to 8 p.m. at Thompson Brothers Funeral Home in Forest City.

Grace Wall
CLIFFSIDE — Mrs. Grace Blackwell Wall, 94, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Oak Grove Health Care in Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral home with the Revs. Anthony Moore and Morris Byers officiating. Burial will be in Cliffside Cemetery. Ruby ARCHER Bradshaw
SHELBY — Ms. Ruby Archer Bradshaw, 86, was born May 15, 1915, in Cleveland County and went home to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Michael E. Bradshaw; two sons, Michael Jr. and William “Bill” Bradshaw; three sisters, Sarah, Mabel Lee and Ella Mae; four grandsons, Robert Jr. Bradshaw, Tony Bradshaw, Toby Woody and Miguel Fontanez; and one granddaughter, Betty Hector. She lived in Manhattan, N.Y., for more than 40 years. While there she was a member of the Greater Tabernacle Baptist Church for more than 40 years and served faithfully as deaconess, worked with Willing Hands and the Pastor’s Aide Committee. She decided to return back to North Carolina to spend her last years with her family here in Shelby. She moved her membership to Hopewell Baptist Church in Shelby. She leaves to cherish precious memories six sons, Robert Bradshaw of Lawndale, James and Ben Bradshaw of Shelby, Jessie and Leon Bradshaw of New York, N.Y., and Elder John H. Bradshaw of Gastonia; a daughter, Ellwease B. Ussery of the home; a devoted and loving sister, Rosetta A. Borders of Winston-Salem; 34 grandchildren; 94 great-grandchildren; 100 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral will be today at 3:30 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Roseboro officiating and Bishop Oscar LeGrant offering words of comfort. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Kenneth McAbee
FOREST CITY — Mr. Kenneth Raymond McAbee, 65, of 203 Trout St., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at his home. BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Dorothy Freund Bresee, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at 100 Lindsey Lee Lane in Boiling Springs. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Palmer Mortuary.

‘Ward’ Berry
SHELBY — Mr. Perrin Wardlaw “Ward” Berry, 65, of 406 Fields Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Born Oct. 24, 1936, in Rock Hill S.C., he was the son of the late L.E. and Ada Perrin Berry. He retired from A.V. Wray and Sons as a buyer. He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church and served in the Navy. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sue Potts Berry of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marlene and Terry Peek of Asheville and Mary Susan Berry of Lincolnton; and a sister, Margaret Berry of Lexington. A memorial service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at John Knox Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Troutman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to John Knox Presbyterian Church, Prayer Garden, 610 Charles Road, Shelby, NC 28152. Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mae Wright
CASAR — Mrs. Ruby Mae Hoyle Wright, 79, of 157 Beechnut Creek Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born May 2, 1923, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley McClure and Lettie Sheila Lail Hoyle. She was a homemaker and member of Pisgah Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bryson McKinley Wright; a son, Ronnie Wright; three brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by seven sons and four daughters-in-law, Bryson Jr. and Marcelle Wright, Kenneth Wright, Randy and Wanda Wright and Steve Wright, all of Casar, Harold and Donna Wright and Allen and Diane Wright, all of Morganton, and Ray Wright of Lawndale; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Pauline Wright, Catherine and Sherrill Towery and Mildred and Philip Brackett, all of Casar, Barbara Ryan of Vale, Gail and Ronnie Buff of Boiling Springs and Lisa and Don Hudson of Connelly Springs; a sister, Bessie Pruett of Casar; 25 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pisgah Baptist Church with the Revs. Carrell Pruette and David Waldrop officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Russell Putnam
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Russell Putnam, 76, of 340 Oak Grove Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. He was married to Helen Maxine Short Putnam for 56 years and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late William Wayne and Lala Wright Putnam, also preceded in death by brothers, Max Putnam, David Paul Putnam and Morris Putnam. He was a life-long member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and on numerous church committees. He was a member of Cleveland County Senior’s Golf Association. He was a founder and retired owner of Putnam Hosiery Co. for over 40 years. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class on the USS Chicago. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Roger D. and Libby Putnam and Gerald E. and Stella Putnam, all of Kings Mountain; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Debbie P. and Richard Van Dyke of Kings Mountain and Teresa P. and Haile LeMaster of Gaffney, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, Laura P. Evans and husband, Reid, of Mount Holly, Jim Putnam of Shelby, Susan Putnam of Asheville, Lee Putnam, Russ Putnam, Jordan Van Dyke, Meredith Van Dyke, all of Kings Mountain, Katye F. Price and husband, Greg, Hunter Falls and Sarah Beth LeMaster, all of Gaffney; two great-grandchildren, Zoe Elisabeth Evans and Emma Wells Price; brother and sister-in-law, Hoyle and Liddy Putnam of Kings Mountain; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Lee Jones of Kings Mountain and Sue Jones and husband, Hicks, of Forest City. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Patterson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Harris Funeral Home.
