GARDEN CITY, S.C. — Mrs. Grace Proctor, 61, wife of John Proctor, of Peachtree Lane, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Proctor was born in Conway, S.C., daughter of Clara Belle Lewis King and the late James Washington Lewis. Surviving in addition to her husband of Garden City and her mother of Conway are one son, Chris Johnson and his wife, Susan, of Longs, S.C.; one stepson, Allen Proctor and his wife, Traci, of Fallston; four brothers, Jimmy Lewis, Lamar Lewis, Joe King and Keith King, all of Conway; a sister, Helen Holley of Conway; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with the Rev. Kirk Lawton officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. ‘Shorty’ Littlejohn
SHELBY — Mr. Dewitt “Shorty” Littlejohn, 93, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center departed this life on Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at his residence. He was born Oct. 2, 1908, in Cherokee County, S.C., and had resided on Stoney Point Road, now named Zeb Cline Road, for 50-some years on the A.B. Cline Farm. “Shorty,” as he was known by his many friends throughout the county, came to Cleveland County as a young boy to the Surratt Farm in Earl. He was later employed on the Wilson, Bettis and Cline farms. He was an experienced horse and mule handler and always participated in and enjoyed the Cleveland County Fair every year. He was a member of Washington Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Sallie Dawkins Littlejohn. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. Denorris Byers officiating and Dr. Samuel Raper offering words of comfort. Burial will be in the church cemetery. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Margaret Green Greene, 88, resident of White Oak Manor, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. She was born in Cleveland County, daughter of the late Thurman and Liza Hardin Green, wife of the late Odus Greene. She was a homemaker and a life-long member of David Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. She is survived by five sons, Clyde F. Greene and wife, Mary Jane, William O. Greene, Jimmy Lee Greene and wife, Margaret, all of Spartanburg, S.C., Bobby Joe Greene and wife, Geraldine, and Jacob H. Greene and wife, Doris, all of Kings Mountain; three sisters, Eva Wease and Vernie Bowen, both of Kings Mountain, and Betty Edwards of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at David Baptist Church with the Rev. Jody Griffin officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. SHELBY — Mr. Franklin Delano Brown, 68, of 115 Plato Lee Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Claude Sanford and Darcus B. Russ Brown. He retired from Doran Textile Mill as cloth room supervisor and was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth Hoyle Brown of the home; four sons, Bobby Eugene Brown of Conover, Michael Robin Brown, U.S.N., of New Orleans, Charles Sanford Brown and Jeffrey Todd Brown, both of Boiling Springs; three sisters, Betty B. Petty and her husband, Albert, of Shelby, Eleanor B. Scism and her husband, Gene, of Kings Mountain, and Brenda B. Mauney and husband, Forrest, of Boiling Springs; and a granddaughter, Brandy Lee Brown and her fiancée, Ricky Metcalf, of Hickory. Earl Carver
FOREST CITY — Mr. Earl Roy Carver, 78, of Charles Street, passed to his eternal home with God on Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital following a period of declining health. Born March 17, 1924, in the Forest City “Cone Mill Village,” Earl was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle and a giving and caring friend to all those he met along the way. He was a son of the late Roy and Dollie Bradley Carver, member of the Missionary Wesleyan Church, Forest City, served from 1942 to 48 in the Navy as a seaman/gunner first class. His service awards included The American Arena, The World War II Victory Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Medal, The Philippine Liberation Medal, and the European, African and Middle Eastern Arena medals, among others. He worked as a U.S. postal carrier, serving City Route 1 for many years. After retirement, he spent most of his time, along with his loving wife, as a volunteer for many causes. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Onnie Hardin Carver of the home; a daughter, Debbie Carver Jones and her husband, Jeff, of Forest City; and two grandchildren, Josh and Breann of their parents’ home; a son, Randy Carver and his wife, Lula, of Shelby and their three children, Justin, Randi-Morgan and Skyler, all of their home. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Missionary Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Todd Gossett and John Devine III officiating. Interment will be with military rites accorded by the Navy Flag Detail. Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 9 at Padgett and King Mortuary, 227 E. Main St., Forest City.

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. Hoyt Oren Hawkins, 72, of 127 Anthony St., died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born in Cliffside, he was a son of the late Clingman and Lily Bridges Hawkins. He retired as a textile employee and was a member of Southside Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Mintz Hawkins. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Barbara Hawkins of Gaffney; a granddaughter, Teddi Lee of Gaffney; and a great-grandson, Adam “A.J.” Lee. NEWTON — Mr. Donald A. Chapman, 50, of 1626 Shuford Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at his home. Born Aug. 8, 1952, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Dennis Belo and Pearl Geneva Hull Chapman. He formerly worked for Shuford Farms and Geymont Co. and also worked in furniture manufacturing. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James Chapman, Gerald Chapman and Lloyd Chapman. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Judy Lynn Lail Chapman of the home; a son, Lee Chapman of Newton; a daughter and her husband, Donna and Ricky Shannon of Gastonia; a stepson, James Cody of Shelby; seven brothers, Evoid Chapman of Marshall, Ira Chapman and Claude Chapman, both of Lincolnton, Charles Chapman, Junior Chapman, Carol Chapman and Grady Chapman, all of Newton; five sisters, Selma Moore of Lawndale, Vangie Grigg and Marlene Newhouse, both of Newton, Ruth Whisnant of Vale and Madelene Dellinger of Clarksville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Amber Shannon and Johnathan Dellinger; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was born on July 7, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. She is preceded in death by her grandfathers, Theodore McClain, Dallas Blanton, and Frank Allen. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother Everette McClain Jr.; two aunts, Shari McClain of Boiling Springs, and Heather Hovis of Shelby; three uncles, Steven Blanton, Roger McClain and Joseph Harrill, all of Boiling Springs; grandparents, Heath and Barbara Hovis of Shelby, and Ida McClain of Shelby; a great-grandmother Dorothy Allen of Shelby, and a host of other relatives and friends.
