The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Holiness Church in Spindale, with the Revs. G.B. Brown, Paul Nelon, Dennis Yelton, Roger Hudgins and Douglas Carpenter officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the Yelton Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at Crowe’s Mortuary in Rutherfordton.

A graveside celebration of life service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Clingman Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Charlie Barnard officiating. CHERRYVILLE — Mr. John Vance Harrelson, 70, of 1656 Delview Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. POLKVILLE — Mrs. Mary Ella McMurry Elliott, 89, of 4411 Polkville Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Century Care of Shelby. Born April 30, 1913, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Laura Essie Shuford and James Anders Wayne McMurry. She retired from Dover Mill Co. and was a member of Polkville United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ivey Elliott. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Nancy Elliott of Polkville; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Ben Hare of Shelby; a brother, James McMurry of Polkville; a sister, Thelma Jenkins of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Necole Richard, Angie Gates, Tanya Davis, Morris Elliott and Benjy Hare; and seven great-grandchildren, Brittany Richard, Tylor Richard, Zackary Richard, Jed Gates, Austin Davis, Caley Gates and Alana Gates. The funeral is Monday at 3 p.m. at Polkville United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Bill Smith and Bryan Glisson officiating. Burial will be in the Elliott Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday in the church fellowship hall one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150. SHELBY — Mrs. Lucille Sutherland, 83, of 119 Sunshine Lane, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Greenville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Tom M. and Mae Mills Curry. She was a homemaker and a member of Eastside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Curry and Jack Curry; and two sisters, Mazel C. Dodson and Barbara C. Biddix. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen H. and Ellen Sutherland of Nashville, Tenn., and Thomas W. and Aleta Sutherland of Shelby; three daughters and sons-in-law, Norma S. and Bennie “Joe” Hawkins of Knoxville, Tenn., Ione S. and the Rev. Harold Fite of Shelby and Diane S. and William Brown of Atlanta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Dorothy Curry of Charlotte and Thomas and Virginia Curry of Shelby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Josephine C. and J.E. Blanton of Shelby and Betty C. and Spurgeon Beam of Columbia, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Wanda Thornton and her husband, Patrick, Drew Fite and his wife, Leslie, Dale Fite and his wife, Terri Lynn, Haley Pond and her husband, Jason, Kyle Sutherland, Milly Sutherland, Dawn Hawkins, Shannon Brown and Traci Spangler and Tripp Spangler; four great-grandchildren, Hunter, Hallie, Dalton and Zoe Fite. The funeral is Monday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Revs. David Blanton and Harold Fite officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday at the funeral home from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the home. Mal Hendrick
SHELBY — Mr. Mal Hendrick, 72, of 406 31st Ave., Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at home. Mal was born April 20, 1929, to C.F. and Leona Costner Hendrick, who preceded him in death along with two brothers, Boyd Hendrick Sr. and Woodrow Hendrick; and two sisters, Charlene Hamrick and Euray Starnes. He was a retired entrepreneur who fearlessly attacked all aspects of life. In the 1960s, with his loving wife beside him, he began Mal-Wan Inc., opening coin-operated laundries in Cleveland County. By the late 1970s, he began to build houses on the North and South Carolina coasts. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wanda Allen Hendrick of Myrtle Beach; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Esther Hendrick of Harlington, Texas, and Byron and Sheila Hendrick and Robin and Marie Hendrick, all of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Ben Waldrep and Susan and David Melton, all of Shelby. He is also survived by grandchildren, Stephen and Tessa Waldrep, Crystal and Chuck Bryson, Eric Hendrick and his fiancée, Laurie Dalton, Amy Hendrick, Mandy Melton, Kelly Hendrick, Greg Melton, Mary Quintanilla and Pedro Gonzalez Hendrick. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Ben G. Walrep, Malisa Gonzalez, Caleb Gonzalez, Bianca Quintanilla and Karina Quintanilla. He is survived by two brothers and their wives, twin brother, Hal and Dorothy Hendrick, John and Osteen Hendrick; four sisters, Lollie Ledford, Evelyn Devine, Vera Keener and her husband, Charles, and Janett Kendrick and her husband, Lawson. A memorial service celebrating Mal’s life will be 2 p.m. today at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby with the Revs. Jeff Brendle and Michael Hendrick officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times will be at the home of Robin and Marie Hendrick, 109 Wilson Farm Road, Shelby. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice of Horry County, P.O. Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, SC 29759; or Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150; or Elizabeth Baptist Church, 301 N. BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Cynthia Sapoch Cash, 96, of 1087 N. Mountain St., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at White Oak Estates, Spartanburg, S.C. Services will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Paran Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Ozment officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the home. CLOVER, S.C. — Mrs. Edna Worthington Eaker Westmoreland, 99, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Courtland Terrace in Gastonia. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Clover Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Jerry G. Robinson and Rob Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the church in the fellowship hall and at other times at the home of Jim Westmoreland, 206 Marrietta St., Clover, and the home of Jack Westmoreland, 218 Neely Road, Clover. ‘Jack’ Holder
MOORESBORO — Mr. Ben Avery “Jack” Holder, 80, of 2110 Camp Creek Church Road, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Willow Ridge Nursing Home in Rutherfordton. He retired as maintenance planner for Duke Power Co. with 35 years of service. He was also a farmer and cattleman. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater, serving with the 297th General Hospital. He was a member of Camps Creek Baptist Church, former deacon, member of Friendship Lodge No. 388 and Scottish Rites 32nd Degree Mason, served three terms as Master of Lodge, former trustee at Cleveland Memorial Hospital and charter trustee at Crawley Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Eugene and Drucilla Potter Holder. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Ruppe Holder; a son and his wife, Jack and Insa Holder; and a stepgrandson and stepgranddaughter. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park Chapel with the Revs. Mike Frazier and Steve Durham and Bob Forbes officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Cherokee Creek Baptist Church Building, Fund, 502 Buck Shoals Road, Gaffney, S.C. ‘Bob’ Jones Sr.
FORT MILL, S.C. — Mr. Robert Wayne “Bob” Jones Sr., 69, of 116 W. Close St., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born June 7, 1933, in Shelby, he was a son of the late Herschel and Edna Thrift Jones. He was retired from the Fort Mill Public School District No. 4, where he was principal. He also taught history and was a football coach. He served on the Fort Mill School Board. He was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He is survived by wife, Sue Jones; a son, Robert Wayne Jones Jr. of Fort Mill; his daughter, Annette Jones Chinchilla of Fort Mill; his sister, Elaine Jones Blanton of Shelby; two grandchildren, Susana Chinchilla and Gabriela Chinchilla, both of Fort Mill. A memorial service will be Monday at 5 p.m. at Unity Presbyterian Church with Dr. Dan Holloway and the Rev. Jeannie Bickett officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Unity Presbyterian Church Youth Fund, P.O. Hattie Beam
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Hattie Turner Beam, 98, of 1308 Delview Road, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover, Shelby. Born July 9, 1904, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Calvin and Hattie Terry Turner. Mrs. Beam retired from Dora Yarn Mill with 48 years of service and was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Beam; a son, Houser “Bill” Beam; and a daughter, Ruby Robbins. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Beam Hamrick of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, T.L. and Alice Beam of Vale; eight grandchildren and spouses, Denise and Bob Jenks, Tim and Judy Beam, Bill C. Beam, Zelda and Wayne Lovelace, Elita and Tony Watts and Teresa Powell, all of Vale, Gary Dodson of South Carolina and Beverly Hamrick Stiles of Chesapeake, Va.; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cone Memorial Chapel with the Revs. James Pyatt and Wayne Key officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. Morris Ramsaur Jr.
SHELBY — Mr. Morris Shuford “Junior” Ramsaur Jr., 79, of 1588 South Oak Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born May 8, 1923, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Morris Shuford Ramsaur Sr. and Dezzie Lee Grigg Ramsaur. He retired as a car salesman and member of Lawndale United Methodist Church. He also served in the Army 25th Field Artillery during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Ramsaur Elliott; and a brother, Hubert Lee Ramsaur. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Blanton Ramsaur of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Louie and Madge Ramsaur of Shelby; two brothers, Eddie E. Ramsaur of Shelby and Billy C. Ramsaur of Lincolnton; a sister, Katherine Smith of Bogger City; three grandchildren, Necole Richard, Morris Elliott and Sam Ramsaur; and three great-grandchildren, Zackary Richard, Tylor Richard and Brittany Richard. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Lawndale United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Reep and Mrs. Frances Ivester officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour and half before the service. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. before the service at the church.
