‘Buck’ Hawkins
CLIFFSIDE — Mr. Alfred “Buck” Hawkins, 82, of 288 Beason Road, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at his home. Born Nov. 16, 1919, he was the son of the late Zeno and Maggie Davis Hawkins. He was a graduate of Clemson University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving with honors in the South Pacific and received the Bronze Star. He was the owner of Cliffside Feed Mill, a laundromat and was an insurance agent for 35 years. He was a member and former trustee of Cliffside Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Beason. He is survived by his wife, Laverne “Bud” Black Hawkins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Scott Houser and Alice and Eddie McGinnis all of Cliffside; two sisters, Katherine Smart and Elizabeth Condrey both of Cliffside; five granddaughters, Sherrie Nunnery, Kim Woodard, Michele Earley, Lindsey Oglesby and Rachel McGinnis a great-grandson, nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Cliffside Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Flemming and Charlie Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Cliffside Cemetery. Horace Bell
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Horace L. Bell, 84, resident of 160 Ware Loop Drive, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Sam and Virginia Wright Bell, and was preceded in death by a sister, Gail Bell. He retired from Margrace Mills after 35 years of service and was a former employee of Minette Mills of Grover, a farmer and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He served in the Army in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Patterson Bell, of the home; daughters Carolyn Patterson and husband, Jay, of Kings Mountain and Nancy Senter and husband, Jon, of Gastonia; brothers, Gene Bell and wife, Opal, Giles Bell and wife, Della, all of Kings Mountain and Arnold Bell and wife, Ruth, of Lenoir; sister, Betty Philbeck and husband, Arnold, of Kings Mountain; grandchildren, Gina Robinson and husband, Robert, of Holden Beach, Betsy Kester and husband, Tom, of Winston-Salem and Nan Knisley and husband, Jon, of Alexandria, Va.; and great-grandchildren, Benjamin Kester and Philip Kester. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Brackett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Henry Willie Lee
SHELBY — Mr. Henry Willie Lee, 89, of 906-B Foxcroft Circle, Shelby, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. He was the son of the late Peter and Cornelius Henderson Lee and a native of Athens. Ga. He was a member of Wardell Chapel AME Zion Church since the late 1950s and was recently honored as the oldest member of the church. He served as pastor’s steward and chairman of the pastor’s steward board for many years. He retired from Cleveland Memorial Hospital after nine years as a male nursing assistant. After retirement, he served as a personal home nurse through the Home Health Facility of Shelby. He was a veteran of the Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of I.B.P.O.E. of W., for over sixty years. He leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife Willie Kea ton Lee of Shelby; two daughters, Sandra Jackson and Wanda Greene of Washington D.C.; two grandsons, William Jackson Jr. and Derrick Ballard; three great-grandchildren, all of Washington; three brothers, Lamar Lee of Fayetteville and Farris Lee and Richard Lee, both of Athens; two sisters, Bessie Lee Henderson, of Niles, Mich., and Samantha Lee Willingham of Athens; one son-in-law, Enoch Greene of Washington; four sisters-in-law, Cora Green of Chicago, Ruth Anderson of Asheville, Annie Lee of Athens and Jessie Lee of Fayetteville; a special nephew, Floyd Maxwell of Los Angeles, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at Wardell Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Bobby H. King officiating. Burial will follow at Eastside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service and other times at 1223 N. Lafayette St. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY — Mr. Edward Wayne Martin, 39, of 507 Caleb Road, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002. Born in Big Rapids, Mich., he was the son of Edward W. Jr. and Patricia R. Cogger Martin of Shelby. A graduate of Shelby High School with the Class of 1981, he served in the Marine Corps and love bass fishing. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Martin. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Krystal Martin of Kings Mountain; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pamela and Christopher Thoresen and Bonnie and Michael Thigpen, all of Cincinnati; his maternal grandmother, Frances Cogger of Port Huron, Mich., and paternal grandfather, Edward W. Martin of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a nephew, Logan Thoresen; and four nieces, Tess and Haley Thoresen and Abigail and Hannah Thigpen. A memorial service will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Thigpen officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service. Hugh Randall
HENDERSONVILLE — Mr. Hugh Davidson Randall, 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House following a brief illness. He was a native of Cleveland County, where he grew up on a farm. He attended Mars Hill College and received a liberal arts degree in pre-medicine. He attended Wake Forest where he received a bachelor’s degree in medical science and a master’s degree in public school administration. He also did graduate work at Western Carolina University. He was a noted educator in North Carolina. He served four years as a medical corpsman in the South Pacific and China with the Marine Corps in World War II. In 1947, he married his grade school sweetheart, Jean Browne. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jean Browne Randall; a daughter, Nancy Randall of Hendersonville; a brother, Thomas Bayne Randall and his wife, Betty, of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville. A private graveside service will follow. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at First Baptist Church.
