Eric Kent Edge
August 20, 1988 - June 07, 2011

Eric Kent Edge, 22, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 7, 2011. Eric was born August 20, 1988, and lived most of his life in Greene County. Eric had earned his Eagle Scout and attended Southern Virginia University following graduation from high school. Eric loved football, both playing and watching, and he also loved fishing and swimming.

He was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kinston and had served his two year mission in Sacramento, California.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, June 10, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3006 Carey Road, Kinston, NC. Burial will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

Eric is survived by his parents, George Kent Edge and Cathy Doffee Edge; his sister, Kimberly Edge Reed and husband, Scott of Snow Hill; a special niece, Rossi Reed; paternal grandmother, Mary Frances Edge of Snow Hill; aunt, Sue Edge Hardison and husband, “T” of Snow Hill; uncle, Mike Edge and wife, Evette of Snow Hill; a special friend, Clinton O’Dell of Snow Hill; and many special cousins.

Eric was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Otto and Carlene Doffee; and paternal grandfather, Kenneth Edge.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Taylor-Tyson funeral service, 117 NW Third Street, Snow Hill, and other times at the residence, 452 Hwy 58 South, Snow Hill.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3006 Carey Road, Kinston, NC 28501. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care provided by the Doctors and staff at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill and the Pitt Memorial Hospital Heart Center.

Ethelene Head Chase
January 30, 1918 - May 30, 2011

Mrs. Ethelene Head Chase, 93, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011, at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Mrs. Chase was a native of Greene County and a member of Free Gospel PFWB Church.

Funeral Services will be held 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 1, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson funeral service with Reverend Terry Heath officiating. Committal Services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, June 2, at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Chase was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Chase; a son, Kenneth Chase; two grandchildren; and her siblings.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Chase Head and husband, Kermit of Snow Hill, and Sybil Chase Mabe of Rockingham, NC; 7 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the service on Wednesday evening and other times at the home of Kermit and Pat Head, 5021 Hwy 13 South, Snow Hill.

Julia Conway Thomas
July 27, 1928 - May 28, 2011

Mrs. Julia Elizabeth Conway Thomas, 82, a retired Registered Nurse, passed away Saturday evening, May 28, 2011.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by her husband, James Adolph Thomas of the home; a son, James Patrick Thomas and wife, Theresa of Snow Hill; and a grandson, James Christopher Thomas and wife, Bethany of Hampton, VA.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 1, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson funeral service. Interment will immediately follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Wednesday and other times at the residence, 447 Hwy 58 North, Snow Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mattie H. Beaman
October 06, 1916 - May 18, 2011

Mrs. Mattie Hoggard Beaman, 94, passed away Wednesday morning, May 18, 2011, at Harmony Hall Nursing and Rehab Center. A native of Bertie County, she was born October 6, 1916, the daughter of Alonzo and Mary Castelloe Hoggard. She moved to the Hookerton Community of Greene County to teach at the Hookerton School and there met her late husband, Reddin Stuart Beaman, Sr.

Her career in education spanned many years to include teaching in the NC Public Schools in both Greene and Lenoir counties to her final years and retirement at Arendall Parrott Academy in Kinston.

Mrs. Beaman remained an active part of the Hookerton community and the Hookerton Christian Church until recent months when declining health limited her abilities.

Surviving are her son, Reddin Stuart Beaman, Jr. and wife, Diane of Hookerton; grandchildren, Stuart Beaman and Candice Anet Beaman, both of Hookerton; great-grandchildren, Vici Beaman Smith and Mason McElveen; and a sister, Vashti Everette of Greenville.

Funeral Services will be held 6:00 PM Saturday, May 21, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson funeral service with Reverend Charlie Greene officiating. Committal Services will be held at the Snow Hill Cemetery Mausoleum 2:00 PM Sunday, May 22.

The family will receive friends on Saturday following the service and other times at the home of Reddin and Diane Beaman, 713 Mike Stocks Road, Hookerton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hookerton Christian Church, Memorial Fund, PO Box 186, Hookerton, NC 28538.

Roy Smith Jones
December 11, 1941 - May 13, 2011

Mr. Roy Smith Jones, 69, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011 at his home. A lifelong resident of Greene County, Mr. Jones was the son of the late, Moses Murphy Jones and Verna Smith Jones. A farmer by vocation, he diversified early in his agricultural career into fruit and produce crops and was well known for his springtime harvests at Jones Fruit Farm. An advocate for farmers and agriculture, Mr. Jones was a former member of the AgCarolina Board of Directors and currently served as County Committee Member of the Greene County Farm Service Agency. Mr. Jones attended Howell Swamp OFWB Church in Walstonburg.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, May 15, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson funeral service in Snow Hill with Reverend Tony Glass officiating. Interment will follow at the Gay Family Cemetery in Walstonburg.

His surviving family includes his wife, Mary Elizabeth “Teny” Gay Jones; sons, Andrew Scott Jones and wife, Janie, Ashley Lynn Jones and wife, Edie, and Vernon Keith Jones and wife, Dawn, all of Walstonburg; grandchildren, Alana Jones, Robert Jones, Frankie Jones, Cheley Jones, and Tyler Jones, all of Walstonburg; and his special nieces, Charissa Lewis of Walstonburg and Saraveen Fields of Jacksonville, FL.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Taylor-Tyson funeral service and other times at the home, 7094 Beaman Old Creek Road, Walstonburg. Senator Jean Rouse Preston
May 25, 1935 - January 09, 2013

Former North Carolina Senator Jean Rouse Preston, 77, a retired educator and North Carolina public servant, passed away Thursday January 10, 2013, in Waterbury, Connecticut.

A native of Greene County, Jean was born May 25, 1935, the daughter of Marvin Wayne and Emma Mae Kearney Rouse. Following graduation from Snow Hill High School, Jean attended Flora MacDonald College before receiving both her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education and Master’s Degree in Education from East Carolina University. Jean furthered her education by continuing post-Master’s work and completing the Public Manager Program at NC State’s Personnel Development Center.

A lifetime committed to promoting education and higher learning, Jean started her professional career teaching business education in the Wilson County Schools, Lenior Community College and Greene County Schools where she also became a special education teacher. Jean later became the Director of Reading for K-12 students and Program Administrator for Children with Special Needs in Greene County. Jean finished her career in education at Caswell Center in Kinston by serving as Principal of Barnes School and as Director of Education.

Following the death of her husband, Hugh Forbes Hardy, Jean moved from her beloved Greene County to reside a short time in Kinston before retiring to Carteret County where she later married Retired US Army Colonel John Edward Preston, who also precedes her in death. Jean established her home in Carteret County and enjoyed a brief respite before launching a career of public service that would span two decades.

First elected in 1992 to the North Carolina General Assembly as a member of the House of Representatives, Jean served seven terms, representing Carteret, Jones and Onslow Counties, before being elected in 2007 to the North Carolina Senate serving Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties. Upon her retirement in December of 2012, Jean left a legacy as a Legislator who worked tirelessly on education reform to ensure our children have the best future possible. Her amazing work ethic and commitment to providing outstanding constituent service was unparalleled.

Jean is survived by daughter, Suzanne Hardy Castleberry and husband, Jeff; grandchildren, Cameron Hardy Castleberry and Jeffrey Parker Castleberry, Jr., all of Raleigh; brothers, Charles A. Rouse and wife, Deedee of Ocean Pines, Maryland, and Thomas M. “Tommy” Rouse and wife, Sandy, of Dallas, Texas; step-daughter, Pam Reed of Virginia; and a dear friend, Bill Hebert of Carteret County and his family. Additionally, Jean was preceded in death by daughter, Lisa Forbes Hardy and brothers, L.W. “Sandy” Rouse and Stephen Reynolds Rouse.

The family will receive friends 5 – 7 PM Sunday, January 13, at Taylor-Tyson funeral service, 117 NW Third Street, Snow Hill, North Carolina.

Funeral Services will be held 11 AM Monday, January 14, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson funeral service with Reverend Dr. Stewart LaNeave and Pastor Scott Hardy officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 AM Saturday, January 19, at the Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church, 100 Yaupon Drive, Cape Carteret, North Carolina, where Jean was a member.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jean R. Preston Distinguished Young Women of Carteret County Scholarship, c/o the Carteret Council of Women, 147 Lake Arthur Drive, Newport, North Carolina, 28570.

Directions to Summerville Presbyterian Church: Hwy 401 to Lillington. Take Hwy 27 West (right beside the funeral home). Go about 6 blocks. Pass 13th Street (on your right). When Hwy 27 curves left, take a right onto West Old Road (right beside Big "A" Auto). At the stop sign, take a left onto Old US 421. Summerville Church is located about 2-3 miles on the left, just past Pinecrest Rest Home
