DAVID RONALD “RONNIE” POE, SR.
David Ronald “Ronnie” Poe, Sr., 67, of Moncure, died Tuesday (04-23-2013) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Funeral services were held Friday, (04-26-2013) at 2 p.m. at the Haywood Independent Bible Church with Rev. Terry Pleasants and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Poe was born in Durham County, the son of the late Alvis Condon Poe and Hazel Marie Smith Poe. A member of the American Legion Post 382, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in Vietnam on the USS Forrestal. He was employed with Carrier Corporation, York and Trane Corporation for over 30 years. He was the owner and operator of Chatham-Lee Realty and Auction Company. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Brian Kelly Poe. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Bonnie Barnes Poe of the home; daughter, Amanda Poe Atkinson of Rock Hill, SC, son, David Ronald Poe, Jr. of Wilmington; sister, Sarah Poe Hearn of Pittsboro; brothers, Alvis C. “Buddy” Poe of St. Louis, Mo., William Jeffery “Bill” Poe of Dunlap, Tenn.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
CHARLES MICHAEL “MIKE” JORDAN
Charles Michael “Mike” Jordan, 65, of Lake View, died Wednesday, (04-24-2013) at his residence. A memorial service was held Friday, (04-26-2013) at 3 p.m. at Narrow Path Church, West End with Rev. Dana Brewer officiating. Mr. Jordan was born in Chatham County on August 20, 1947, the son of Charles and Virginia (Collins) Jordan. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, an auto body repairman, having worked at Fields Body Shop, Welford Harris Ford and Ken’s Body Works. Mike was a member of Narrow Path Church in West End. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Brenda Peele Jordan. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Wilma (Wicker) Jordan; daughters, Becky Jordan Griffin and Sandra Jordan Johnson, both of Siler City; son, Michael Rosser Jordan of West End; brother: Steve Jordan of Ft. Worth, TX; and five grandchildren.
RONALD H. “RONNIE” SPIVEY
Ronald H. “Ronnie” Spivey, 64, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday, (04-24-2013) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill. Funeral services were held Saturday, (04-27-2013) at 2 p.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church with Pastor James Bowman, Pastor Bob Boyd and Pastor Mike Cowell officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park. Mr. Spivey was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 22, 1948, the son of Arthur S. and Dorothy (Vickers) Spivey. He had been employed with Wake Stone. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ray Dean Spivey. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Hilda (Teague) Spivey; daughters, Angie McMahon of Sanford, Cheryl Spivey of Wilmington, Dottie Holshauser of Pittsboro; son, Steve Spivey of Pittsboro; sisters, Mary Helen S. Burgess of Pisgah Forest, Lela S. Bowman of Haw River; brother, Richard Spivey of Siler City; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Loves Creek Baptist Church, 1745 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.
ORVEL STARR, JR.
Mr. Orvel Starr, Jr., 91, of Sanford, died Thursday, (04-25-2013) at Liberty Commons Retirement Center. Funeral services were held Sunday, (04-28-2013) at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Johnson and Rev. Donald Luellen presiding. Burial followed at Cool Springs Baptist Church with military honors. Mr. Starr was born in Krypton, KY. on December 17, 1921 to the late Orvel Starr, Sr. and Rosa Baldwin Starr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings Dorothy Wilson, Jessie Dutton, Buddy Starr, Robert Starr and Kathleen Edwards. Mr. Starr worked for Sanford Motor Sales for 38 years prior to owning and operating Starr’s Auto Repair. In years past he attended St. Stephen’s Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was a World War II in the United States. Army. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Harkey Starr; sons, David Starr, Richard Starr, Rodney Starr, Tony Starr, Gary Starr, all of Sanford; daughters, Rita Kreusch of Yellville, AR, Patty Oakley of Cameron, Crystal Garner of Cumnock, Lisa Perry of Sanford; brother, Lonnie Starr of Hartsell, AL; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
DeETTE PHILLIPS JONES
DeEtte Phillips Jones, 98, of Bear Creek, passed away Sunday, (04-28-2013), at Firsthealth Hospice in Pinehurst. Funeral services were held on Tuesday (04-30-2013), at 4 p.m. at Fall Creek Baptist Church, with Dr. Ron Chaney and Rev. Scott Allmon officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery Mrs. Jones was born July 27, 1914, in Bennett, the daughter of Herbert R. and Nannie Brewer Phillips. Mrs. Jones, a homemaker, was the oldest member of Fall Creek Baptist Church, where she was a choir member for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Daniel H. Jones, daughter, Ellen J. Lambert, brothers, Clarence Phillips, Robert Phillips and a sister, Evelyn P. Cheek. Survivors include a son, Doyle Jones of Bear Creek; sister, Maxine P. Albright of Bennett; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
NANCY OCAMPO
Miss Nancy Ocampo, 22, of Siler City, died Friday, (04-26-2013), from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, (05-04-2013) at Iglesia Bautista Misionera Roca Fuerta, in Pittsboro with Reverend Javier Benetiz presiding. Interment will follow in Chatham Memorial Park. Born February 6, 1991 in Surry County, Nancy was the daughter of Telesforo and Maria Ocampo. Nancy was an honors student attending Central Carolina Community Collegein Pittsboro, where she also worked in the library. She was a computer and sound technician for her church, Iglesia Bautista Misionera Roca Fuerta in Pittsboro. She is survived by her parents, Telesforo and Maria Ocampo of Siler City; and a sister, Leslie Ocampo, also of Siler City. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. On Friday, Miss Ocampo will be taken to the church at 2 p.m., where friends may also visit with the family. Arrangements for Miss Ocampo are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation, Pittsboro.
MARGARET MAE SMITH FIELDS
Margaret Mae Smith Fields, 87, of Gulf, NC, passed Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford. Mrs. Fields was born April 2, 1926 in Chatham County to the late Pearl Smith and Lessie (Phillips) Smith. A visitation was held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Gulf Presbyterian Church in Gulf. The funeral service followed at 3. Burial was in Buffalo Cemetery. Mrs. Fields was a long time member of Gulf Presbyterian Church and Gulf Women’s Club. She worked as a nurse and secretary in the medical field for over 38 years. She enjoyed her family trips to Sunset Beach and spending time with her grandchildren, which she loved and adored. Mrs. Fields was preceded in death by her husband in 2010, Wilbur Monroe Fields, Jr., brothers, Jimmy and Clarence Smith and sister, Helen Thrift. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Ann Fields of Gulf; grandsons, Richard Turner and wife Renee of Angier, Mark Turner and wife Tonia of Lillington, Kelly Turner and wife Michele of Sanford; nine great grandchildren, Natalie, Joseph, Austin, Brittany, Daniel, Justin, Aaron, Samantha, Brandon, and one great-great-grandchild, Corey. Family has requested in lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Gulf Presbyterian Church. Miller-Boles Funeral Home of Sanford served the family.
CLINTON “RUSSELL” POWERS
Mr. Clinton “Russell” Powers, 86, of 7808 Howard Mill Road, Bennett passed away April 24, 2013 at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham Street, Bennett, NC 27208 with Rev. Tim Powers officiating. His request was to be cremated, so there will be no grave site. Mr. Powers was a Randolph County native and in 1950, he started Powers Trucking Company. In 1965, he started Mid-State Farms which he owned and operated until 1982. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Margaret T. Powers. Mr. Powers is survived by sons, Ronald Powers of Bennett, David Powers and wife Sheila of Bear Creek; granddaughter, Misty Murray and husband Travis of Bennett; brother, Curtis Powers Jr. of Bennett; and his beloved pet dog of 12 years, “Josie”. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Humane Society or your local Pet Rescue. Joyce-Brady Chapel served the Powers family.
ELMO “BUD” GARNER
Mr. Elmo “Bud” Garner, 88, of Robbins died Wednesday, (04-17-2013) at his home. Funeral services were held Friday, (04-19-2013) at 3 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Neal Jackson and Rev. Robert L. Kidd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Garner was a Moore County native and retired from Robbins Mill and Chirpy’s BBQ. He was a dedicated member of Beulah Baptist Church where he not only was the oldest member, but served as deacon, choir member, past pulpit committee, and grounds committee. Survivors include his wife, Velna Caviness Garner of the home; son, Ronald Garner of Robbins; daughters, Wanda G. Ellington, Debra G. Ritter, both of Robbins; brothers, Jimmie H. Garner, Willie A. “Bill” Garner, both of Robbins; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church, 8454 Howards Mill Road, Bennett, NC.
MARY RUTH BEAL BREWER
Mary Ruth Beal Brewer, 88, formerly of Bennett passed away Tuesday, (04-23-2013) at Siler City Center. Funeral services will be held Thursday, (04-25-2013) at 11 a.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel with Rev. Scott Allmon officiating. Burial will follow at Fall Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Ms. Brewer was born in Harnett County, was retired from Mid-State Poultry, and a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Lee Brewer, a daughter, Nadine Maness, and a grandson, Andrew Tillman. Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Irene Tillman of Goldston, Mrs. Rosa Parker of Sanford, eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held Wednesday, (04-24-2013) from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel.
BENTON ADDISON SCOTTEN
Benton Addison Scotten, 87, of Siler City, died Wednesday, (04-17-2013) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill. A graveside service with military honors was held Saturday, (04-20-2013) at 11 a.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Mr. Scotten was born in Moore County on August 21, 1925, the son of Clester Roster and Lora (Davis) Scotten. He was a World War II veteran of the Marine Corps, where he served in the battle of Iwo Jima and the occupation of Japan. He retired from J. P. Stevens as a truck driver with 29 years of service. Benton attended the Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Ada Mae (Watson) Scotten; sons, John B. Scotten of Siler City, Marty Scotten of Staley; sister, Nellie Gray McMahon of Siler City; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church, 17475 US 64 W, Siler City, NC 27344 or to Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Judy Lane, 45 John Lane Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.
