MRS. ALLENE RAYLE
Mrs. Allene Rayle, 90, of Martinez, Georgia, died Wednesday, (05-15-2013) at University Hospital. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel with Pastor Bob Purvis and Pastor Dusty Wammack officiating. Burial followed at Westover Memorial Park. An avid writer, she published her first book of poems at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Rayle. Survivors include her son, Steve Rayle; daughter, Cindy O’Connor; twin sister, Madeline O’Neal; sister, Barbara Cook; brothers, Joe Oldham, W.C. HELEN PRISCILLA UPCHURCH CUMMINGS
Helen Priscilla Upchurch Cummings, 67, died Saturday, (05-18-2013). Funeral services were held at Duncan Baptist Church Wednesday, (05-22-2013) at 2 p.m., with Rev. David McLaurin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Cummings was a native of Harnett County and daughter of the late Malcom Upchurch and Lucille Wimberly Upchurch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Andrew Cummings; brother, Jack Upchurch and sister, Rachel Cotten. Survivors include a son, Ronnie Claude Cummings of Sanford; daughters, Gaynell Cummings, Rhonda Utley, both of Sanford; brothers, Ray Upchurch of Angier, Burt Upchurch of Broadway, Mack Upchurch, Tom Upchurch, both of Shallotte; and four grandchildren.
MARY ALICE DEVOTO BARRETT
Mary Alice Devoto Barrett, 69, died Friday, (05-17-2013) at her home. A graveside service was held at Lemon Springs Baptist Church Cemetery on Tuesday, (5-21-2013), at 1 p.m. with Rev. Andy Foley and Dr. Jim Whitehead officiating. She was born in St. Louis County, Missouri to the late August G. Devoto and Alice Schnarr Devoto. A home maker, she was preceded in death by her husband, James David Barrett, brother, August Devoto and a sister, Judy Devoto Privitt. Surviving relatives include son, John David Barrett of Cameron; daughter, Debbie Barrett of Cary; brothers, Dick Devoto, Bob Devoto, Donnie Devoto, all of Missouri; sister, Barbara Medina of Missouri; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
MAGGIE ROBELLE RAINES
Mrs. Maggie Robelle Raines died Sunday, (05-19-2013) at Durham Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held Friday, (05-24-2013) at Holland Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Apex. The family visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. and the service at 2, with Rev. Dr. Orlando R. Dowdy officiating. Survivors include her husband, James Louis Raines, Sr.; sons, James Louis Raines, Jr. of Roxboro, Andrew Raines of Camden, NJ, Troy Raines of Durham; daughter, Faith Wells of Durham; sisters, Bernice Barbee, Unita Wilson, both of Apex, Wilhemenia Thomas of Durham, Emma McCullough of Camden, NJ, Mary Breeze of Harrisburg, PA; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
GAYNETTE PATTERSON WHITE
Gaynette Patterson White, 80, of Siler City died Monday (05-13-2013) at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at Rocky River Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Fredrick James officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. White was a native of Chatham County, a member of Rocky River Baptist Church, and retired from Liberty Chair Company. Survivors include her husband, Troy White; sons, Jerry L. White of Siler City, Phil L. White of Kernersville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
FRANCES “FRANKIE” TAYLOR HARRIS
Frances “Frankie” Taylor Harris, 83 of Goldston died Saturday, May 18, 2013 . Mrs. Harris was born in Durham, September 30, 1929, the daughter of Hanciel Clyde and Annie (West) Taylor. She was a 1951 graduate of Women’s College (now UNCG) and taught at Chatham Central High School from 1957-1967. She was a member of Goldston United Methodist Church, the adult Sunday School Class, the church choir, church secretary and a member of the United Methodist Women. Frankie also served as coordinator for the college student outreach ministry and was a member of the Goldston Lion’s Club. She retired from the office of Dr. James Little after 15 years of service. Frankie was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Harris; her parents; a brother, William W. Taylor and sisters, Mary Coley and Sarah Conrad. She is survived by one daughter: Lisa Harris Smith and husband, Randy of Bear Creek; one son, Jody R. Harris and wife, Tina of Bear Creek; grandchildren, Jordan and Turner Harris, Ethan and Hannah Smith; sisters, Leila T. Veasey, Lella T. Dezern both of Durham; special caregivers and family friends, Carmen Bryant and Christina Stanley. The family received friends Monday, May 20, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at home of Jody Harris, 8343 Old Hwy 421, Bear Creek. The funeral was held Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 4 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Simpson officiating. Burial was in Goldston Cemetery. BOBBY JACK POE
Bobby Jack Poe, 73, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Wesley Long Hospital. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church in Greensboro. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Liberty. Bobby was born August 22, 1939, in Chatham County, to the late Jack and Lucy Kivett Poe. He was a faithful member of Community Baptist Church, and sales representative in the RV industry. He retired from the North Carolina Army National Guard. In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by a son Terry Lynn Poe, and sister, Thelma Knight. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Overman Poe of Greensboro; children, Bobbie Marsh and husband Jaimie, Christi Tilley and husband David, Cary Poe and wife Laura; and sister Joan Roberts. He was Paw-Paw Bob to Daniel Marsh and wife Tina, Ben Marsh, Hunter Tilley, Abigail Poe, Caroline Poe, Garrett Marsh, and Bailey Marsh. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at George Brothers funeral service in Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Building Fund of Community Baptist Church 1330 Burnetts Chapel Road. Greensboro, NC 27406. Rev. Ronald Wesley Terry passed away Thursday, (05-09-2013) at his home in Troy. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, (05-14-2013) at the First Wesleyan Church in Troy with Dr. Clifford Van Sickle officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Rev. Terry was the son of the late Edward E. Terry and Ocie Mae Magner Terry. He was also predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou Russell Terry; sisters, Edna and Lillian; and brothers, Robert, Gordon, and Charles. Rev. Terry was the pastor of Why Not Wesleyan Church in Seagrove at the time of his death. Survivors include his daughter, Cyndy Dawn Hornback of Sophia; son, Russell Wesley Terry of Greensboro; sisters, Betty Shaulis of New Marshfield, Ohio, Jean Reichard of Oviedo, Florida; and four grandchildren, . Mr. Ernest Snipes, 87, of Pittsboro, passed away Saturday, (05-11-2013) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, (05-15-2013) at St. Andrews Congregational Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Snipes Johnson; son, Ernest Clifton Snipes, both of Pittsboro; sister, Irene Snipes of Yanceyville; brothers, Claude Snipes of Pittsboro, Lindo Snipes of Virginia, Harold Snipes of Greensboro; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. George Winford Minter, 70, of Bear Creek died Friday (05-10-2013) at his home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, (05-16-2013) at 2 p.m. at Knotts Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Burial will follow in the Minter Cemetery at Old Taylor’s Chapel. Beulah Mae O’Quinn Boggs, 74, of Sanford, died Sunday (05-12-2013) at her home. Funeral services will be held Friday, (05-17-2013) at 3 p.m. at Juniper Springs Baptist Church with Rev. John Hackney and Rev. Michael Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Harnett County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Robert O’Quinn and Pauline Willie Knight O’Quinn. She was a member of Juniper Springs Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, was a member of the W.M.U. and for many years, was in charge of the church nursery. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Levi Boggs, sons, Ronald Lee Boggs, Jerry Lynn Boggs, grandson, Daniel Caleb Sheets, and sister, Mamie O’Quinn. Survivors include daughters, Donna Hancock of Goldston, Debbie Bunnell of Sanford, Brenda Boggs of Broadway, Patsy Bullard of Fayetteville, Paula Eubanks of Sanford; son, Tommy Boggs of Sanford; brothers, John O’Quinn, Daniel O’Quinn, both of Sanford; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (05-16-2013) at Smith Funeral Home in Broadway.
