The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Wardell Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Bobby H. King officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery. CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Christine Luvenia McRavion, 63, of 1003 McArthur Ave., died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at McArthur Retirement Center, Charlotte. Frances Shehan
BOSTIC — Mrs. Frances Chapman Shehan, 54, of 145 Harwood Place, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Rutherford County, member of the Bostic Missionary Methodist Church, retired from Drexel Furniture Co., Plant 3 and 5 in Morganton, after 35 years of service, widow of the late Charles Alvin Shehan, who died in February of this year. Her mother, Elsie Pauline Chapman and a brother, Oscar Chapman Jr. also preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, the Rev. Chris Shehan and his wife, Christie, of Bostic; two daughters, Regina Weaver and her husband, Ronny, of Ellenboro, Jamie Absher and her husband, Kevin, of Bostic; her father, Oscar Chapman Sr. and his wife, Dessie, of Bostic; three sisters, Shirley Toney and Helen Murray, both of Bostic, and Ruth Shook of Newton; and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Bostic Missionary Methodist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Kanipe and Ernie Cole officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 9 at Padgett and King Mortuary, 227 East Main St., Forest City, N.C.
‘Becky’ Frazier
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — Mrs. Rebecca Ann “Becky” Frazier, 37, went to be with the Lord, Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, after a long battle with cancer. She was a member of New Hope Church of God in Sevierville and was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Huggins. Becky was loved by many in return for her endless love and compassion she showed for others. Survivors include her husband, Darryl Frazier; a daughter, Kristi Michelle Frazier; her father, Lloyd Huggins; two brothers, John and Jeffrey Huggins; and a sister, Linda Huggins. A memorial service will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at New Hope Church of God in Sevierville with Pastor Tom Sterbens officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to BB&T Bank to benefit Darryl and Becky’s daughter, Kristi, for her college education. LAWNDALE — Mr. William Boyd Willis, 59, of 2607 Curt Ledford Road, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born June 20, 1943, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Ralph Eugene Sr. and Lula Mae Sweezy Willis. He retired from Hickory Springs Manufacturing as supervisor, after 30 years of service. He attended Pisgah Baptist Church and volunteered for Upper Cleveland Area Needs (UCAN) and Hospice of Cleveland County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Pete, Glenord, Ralph Jr. and Bobby Dale Willis. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Vernie Cook Willis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vonda and Ryan Weaver of Rougemont and Amanda and Clifford Hoyle of Casar; a daughter, Rhoda Willis of Cary; four brothers, Gene Willis and Randy Willis, both of Casar, Phillip Willis of Vale and Larry Willis of Lawndale; and four grandchildren, Cody Hoyle, Caitlin Hoyle, Cheyenne Hoyle and Justin Weaver. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Revs. Chris Sanford and Carolyn Sears officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. SHELBY — Mrs. Muriel Eddins Freeman, 79, of 303-3 Pinkney St., formerly of Forest City, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at her home. Born Jan. 17, 1923, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Caleb and Jane Paxton Eddins. She retired from Cone Mill, Florence Plant. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Adult 7 Sunday School Class at Elizabeth, former long time member of First Baptist Church of Forest City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Mark Freeman; a brother, Everette Eddins; and a sister, Lillie Mae Eddins White. She is survived by a brother, Paul Eddins of Shelby; a sister, Elsie Eddins McSwain of Shelby; three nephews and their spouses, Hubert and Alma Eddins of Rock Hill, S.C., Kenneth and Ann White and Bruce and Linda McSwain, all of Shelby; and five nieces and their spouses, J.P. and Ray Whisnant and Paula and David Blanton, all of Shelby, Catherine and Frank Derikart of Florence, S.C., Rachel and Dan Fink of Matthews and Martha and Bob Smith of Fayetteville, Ark. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Forest City with the Revs. Tony Spencer, David Blanton and Clyde Buckner officiating. SHELBY — Mrs. Annie Ray Allen Dycus, 77, of 1608 Lithia Springs Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at her home. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late George Marion and Cordia Camp Allen. She was a homemaker and formerly employed by Esther Mill Co. She was a lifetime member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and member of the Mattie Sue Lowery Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Faye Allen and Eunice Hunt; and three brothers, Howard Allen, Weldon Allen and Louie Allen. She is survived by her husband, Donald H. Dycus; a son, Ned Dycus of the home; and a sister, Stella Wright of Shelby. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Dickens officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Thomas “Tommy” Finley Roark, 73, of 402 W. Pine St., died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Roark was born in Blacksburg, S.C., a son of the late Thomas Finley Roark Sr. and Mary Gordon White Roark. He was a retired supervisor with PPG Industries in Shelby, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of First Baptist Church of Blacksburg. RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Geraldine Horn Morgan, 80, of 2500 Rock Road, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at her residence. She was a native of Rutherford County and a daughter of the late Lester and Bernice Wilkie Horn, a homemaker and member of Faith Baptist Church in Shelby. Survivors include two sons, Barry Marshall Jones Sr. of Forest City and Rodney Julian Morgan of Greensboro; a brother, Brandt B. Horn of Forest City; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church with the Revs. J. Edna Derrick
CHARLOTTE — Edna Haltiwanger Derrick, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital after a very brief illness. She was born in Salley, S.C., on July 31, 1909, the only child of Edwin Gantt and Belle McMillan Haltiwanger. She graduated from Coker College in 1931 and was married to William Edward Derrick on June 15, 1932. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1984. She retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System having taught at Piedmont and Spaugh Junior High Schools. She lived in the Paw Creek community since 1943 and was an active member of Thrift United Methodist Church. She continued to teach the Ladies Bible Class until the Sunday before her death. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, ADK Sorority and Pilot Club. She was a volunteer for Bethlehem Center for more than 20 years and a life member of United Methodist Women. She is survived by five children: Mary Henry and her husband, Jerry, of Shelby; Edwin Derrick of Salley; Charles Derrick and his wife, Judy, of Danville, Va.; David Derrick and his wife, Barbara, of Charlotte; and Dick Derrick of Spartanburg, S.C. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Chad Derrick and his wife, Kim, of Charlotte; Ryan Derrick of Raleigh; David Henry and his wife, Claire Hirn, of Louisville, Ky.; Joe Henry and his wife, Melanie Ciccone, of South Pasadena, Calif.; Catherine Twomey and her husband, Patrick, of Appleton, Wis.; Andy Henry and his wife, Natalie Cole, of Royal Oak, Mich.; and Reed Derrick of Spartanburg, S.C. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Thrift United Methodist Church with the Revs. Loretta Stutz and Gerald L. Ramsey and Dr. Jeff Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel. SHELBY — Mr. Dennis Odell Spencer, 59, of 3042 Longwood Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was a graduate of Hickory High School and North Carolina State University, where he received a chemical engineering degree. After college, he worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard for three years, PPG for 17 years and Azdel, Inc., for the past 17 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Otis Odell Spencer. He is survived by his wife, Vicki Spencer, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim Spencer and Geoff Lloyd of Indianapolis; his mother, Ruth Spencer Reese of Hickory; a sister and brother-in-law, Rachel Colleen Reese and Edward Scott of Powder Springs, Ga.; and a niece and nephew, Mandy and Matthew Scott of Powder Springs. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.
