ELAINE FOUST GILMORE
Elaine Foust Gilmore, 61, of Staley, died Tuesday (05-28-2013) at Duke Medical Center in Durham. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (06-01-2013) at Shady Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Rev. Howard Moffitt, Rev. Michael Horton, and David B. Gilmore, Sr., officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. A native of Randolph County, she was a former employee of Randolph County Schools, working in the cafeteria and as a bus driver. She grew gladiolas for local florists and was a business partner in Ramseur Mobile Home Supply. Survivors include her husband, David B. Gilmore, Sr.; daughter, Ellie Meadows of Coleridge; sons, Alex Gilmore of Asheboro, David Gilmore, Jr. of Staley; sister, Evon Louise Foust of Staley; brother, Eugene C. Foust of Staley; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Dr. Lanasa, CLL Research, Duke Cancer Institute, Box3828 D.U.M.C. Durham, NC 27701; or to the Shady Grove Baptist Church, 6377 Old Staley Road, Staley, NC 27355.

LUBY SHELTON WEAVER
Mr. Luby Shelton Weaver, 79, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday, (05-29-2013) at his home. The celebration of life service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, (06-02-2013) from Emmaus Baptist Church, with Pastor Steve Moore presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Weaver was born July 21, 1933 in Goldsboro, the son of Luby Lisker Weaver and Dora Estelle Denning Weaver. He was a graduate of Grantham High School, East Carolina College, and received his Masters in Education from the University of Maryland. He served in the United States Marine Corps, and then was a program co-ordinator with the North Carolina Community College System, where he retired. He was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church, having served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Virginia Wood Weaver; daughters, Dora Owens of Pittsboro, Ruth Ann Weaver of Siler City, Virginia L. Weaver of Pittsboro; brother, Leslie L. Weaver of Chester, VA; sister, Mary W. Pedigo of Grantham; and four grandchildren. Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be directed to the Emmaus Baptist Church Building Fund.

GEORGE M. BRADY
George M. Brady passed away Saturday, (06-01-2013) at his home in Bennett. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, (06-04-2013) at Pine Mountain Friends Church with Rev. Joey Greene, Rev. David Thomas, and Rev. Larry Henderson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Born in Moore County, Mr. Brady was the son of the late Roland W. Brady, and was also predeceased by his brother, Jerry W. Brady. He was a member of Pine Mountain Friends Church, where he operated the sound equipment. Survivors include his mother, Myrtis Brady of Carthage; sisters, Cindy Hancock, Wanda Brady, both of Bear Creek, Rolanda Phillips of Carthage; brothers, Brad Brady and Donald Brady, both of Bennett. Memorials may be directed to Pine Mountain Friends Church, 268 Phillips Road, Bennett, NC 27208.

BOBBY F. DUNN
Mr. Bobby F. Dunn 71, of Robbins died Friday, (05-31-2013) at his home. Funeral services were held Sunday, (06-02-2013) at 4 p.m. at Pine Mountain Friends Church where he was a member with Rev. Joey Greene officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Dunn was a Moore County native and owner and operator of Bobby Dunn’s Garage. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Johnson Dunn of the home; sons, Gregory Dunn of Robbins, Ricky Dunn of Ramseur, Keith Dunn of Robbins; sisters, Linda D. Hunt, Barbara D. Lamb, both of Asheboro; and nine grandchildren.

ALICE RUTH CUNNINGHAM MILLER
Alice Ruth Cunningham Miller died Saturday (05-25-2013) in Palmdale, CA. Memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (06-01-2013) at Palmdale United Methodist Church. A private family graveside service was held at 2 p.m., Friday, (05-31-2013) at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, Newhall, CA. Mrs. Miller was born July 10, 1918, in Minong, WI to Imes Malone Cunningham and Florence Walden Cunningham. She had worked as a cafeteria worker in the L.A. school system. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell A. Miller, brothers, James “Jim” Cunningham, John Cunningham and one sister, Margaret Dodes Hegseth. Survivors include sisters, Helen Folger, Dorothy Enfield, both of Texas; her children, Keith A. Miller of Sanford, Lynn R. Miller of Riverside, CA, Ruth A. Holland of Palmdale, CA; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice, or: Palmdale U.M.C. Building Fund, 39055 10th Street West, Palmdale, CA 93551; or Palmdale Play House, 38334 10th Street East, Palmdale, CA93550.

OMA LEE BEAL
Oma Lee Beal passed away Monday, (06-03-2013) at Genesis Care & Rehab in Siler City . Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (06-05-2013) at Fall Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Allmon and Dr. Ronnie Chaney officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Born in Chatham County, Ms. Beal was the daughter of the late Henry Thomas Lambert and Addie Jones Lambert. She was predeceased by her husband, Tracy Beal and sisters, Mamie Phillips and Maggie Neal. Ms. Beal was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a retired chicken farmer. She is survived by daughters, Linda Mangum, Laura Luck, both of Asheboro , Elizabeth Pilson of Bear Creek; son, Jerry Beal of Bear Creek; six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

NANCI ELLEN SHARP TANTON
Nanci Ellen Sharp Tanton, a resident of Chatham County, NC, died of pancreatic cancer May 21, 2013 in Dothan, Alabama where she was surrounded by family and friends. Two days before her death, Nanci was delighted to join her brother, William Sharp and many other friends and family members across the United States in a beautiful Gulf Coast retreat near Panama City, Florida for a celebration of marriage joining her daughter Arianne Tanton and Quinn Marceil. Nanci was born in Lexington, Kentucky May 14, 1952. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and undertook graduate work in the same field at Florida State University. She was employed by the Town of Cary and worked in the cultural arts field. A lifelong photographer and world traveler, Nanci earned a reputation as one of North Carolina’s leading photographers. Her work included landscape, architectural and human interest subjects. Nanci was formerly married to Bob Tanton of Dothan, Alabama, who died in December, 1990. For the past eleven years, Nanci lived on a rolling Chatham County farm with her friend and partner, Dr. C. A. Keisler. Together, the two enjoyed the meadows, streams, woods and extensive flower gardens surrounding their beautiful home near the Rocky River. Nanci is survived by family members in Georgetown, Kentucky and both Birmingham and Dothan, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, Nanci asks friends and family to make donations to help fund pancreatic cancer research with donations going to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, via www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/NanciTanton/keepthememoryalive.

JANE PYLE
Jane Pyle, 83, died June 1, 2013. She was born in Ames, Iowa in 1929, to Capt. Charles A. Pyle and Margaret Pyle, while Capt. Pyle was teaching Military Science and Tactics at Iowa State College. Until 1939, the family moved every two years, to Panama, Georgia, Kansas, Wyoming, California, Arkansas, Oklahoma and back to Iowa. After Pearl Harbor, the moves were more frequent until the family stayed in Iowa when now Major Pyle was sent to Europe. She graduated from high school in Ames and started college at the University of Oklahoma, before graduating from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Joining the family in Austria, she worked at various positions with the Department of the Army. After returning to the states, she worked in Washington and then moved to Arizona with the family before now Brig. Gen. Pyle retired after his last posting in Korea. She continued with her own education as well as traveling extensively and began teaching sixth grade and then college before deciding teaching was not for her. She was also an exceptional golfer as well as duplicate bridge and gardening enthusiast. In 1979, she moved to Chatham County and began another career, this time as a printer, the only one in Pittsboro for ten years. She bought her home from the county at an auction on the courthouse steps, and spent almost 30 years improving it, while becoming involved with the library, planning and zoning commissions, and the Chatham County Historical Association where she contributed many well-researched articles on local history, as well as to other facets of the CCHA, and spent many hours working on the Pittsboro Historical District. She was able to attend the open house for the new Chatham County Museum and see the results of many people’s work in replacing the space for sharing the history of Pittsboro and Chatham County on which she had spent so much time. Miss Pyle is survived by sisters, Nancy P. Simons of Pittsboro, Margaret P. Poorman of Encinitas, CA; brother, Charles R. Pyle and wife, Marcia of Kings Beach, CA; nine nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an older sister, Ruth. At her request, there will be no services. The family is most grateful for the care offered by UNC Hospice Care. Memorial contributions may be made to either UNC Hospice or the Chatham County Historical Association.

PEARL GRAY MITCHELL SIKES
Pearl Gray Mitchell Sikes, 77, of New Hill, passed away peacefully with her family beside her on Friday, May 24, 2013 in UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was born June 29, 1935 at home near Bonsal in Chatham County, the daughter of Henry Alvin Mitchell and Martha Annie Jones. She married her husband of 60 years, Robert Wesley Sikes on December 6, 1952 in Chesterfield, SC. Mrs. Sikes was a homemaker, a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, member of the Brown Baldwin Circle and president of the 4H Club for a few years. She attended Moncure High School and hosted the Mitchell Family Reunion for 20 years. Mrs. Sikes is survived by her husband, Robert Wesley Sikes; sons, Wallace Craig Sikes and wife Debbie Green of Garner, Wayne Barry Sikes of New Hill; grandchildren, Jessica Carmen Sikes and husband Allen Williford of Willow Springs, Melanie Dawn Sikes of Garner; great grandchildren, Benny Lofton Williford, Lexus Jade Cook, Abigail Brooklyn Cook; sister, Ila Mae Mitchell and husband Stanley Wittenberg of Cary; brothers-in-law, Walter Lee Sikes of New Hill, and Curtis Garlin Sikes and wife Rose Mary Oakley Sikes of Durham. She is preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Mary Bell Mitchell McCann, Katy Lee Mitchell Donaldson, Dartha Cornelius Mitchell Howard, Henry Otis Mitchell, Charlie Benton Mitchell, Ray Rufus Mitchell, Clarie Mitchell; and half brother, Clyde Dixon Mitchell. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 West Williams Street, Apex. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 724 Beaver Creek Road, Apex. Burial followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ebenezer UMC, P O Box 2146, Apex, NC 27502.

VIRGINIA COX SMITH
Mrs. Virginia Cox Smith, 84, of Bennett, died Monday, June 3, 2013 at First health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 4: p.m. at Bennett Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The visitation was held on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett. A native of Caswell County, she was born September 11, 1928. She worked many years as secretary for the Randolph County Board of Education. Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of Bennett Baptist Church. During her life, she dedicated a great deal of time to the church, serving as organist, clerk, historian, teaching Sunday School and many other areas of the church where her talents were needed. She will be remembered also for her lifetime zeal for learning and helping others with their education. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Clyde J. Smith, Sr. Survivors include her son, Clyde Jennings Smith Jr. and wife Susie of Rockingham; one grandson, Clyde J. Smith III and one granddaughter, Mary Susan Smith, both of Wake Forest, N.C. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bennett Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 91, Bennett, N.C. 27208. Joyce-Brady Chapel of Bennett is serving the family.

CAROLYN FORREST MASKE
Mrs. Carolyn Forrest Maske 68, of Robbins, passed away Tuesday, (05-21-2013) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Funeral services were held Friday, (05-24-2013) at 3 p.m. at Pine Mountain Friends Church where she was a member with Rev. Joey Greene and Rev. Michael Parenti officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Maske was born in East Laport, and was site manager for Moore County Department of Aging for five years. She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Ernest Forrest Sr., mother, Josephine Andrew, and sibling’s, Martha Faye Dawson, Clyde Ernest Forrest, Jr., John Earl Forrest, and Louie Forrest. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Wayne Maske of Robbins, daughters, Renee’ Boutin Andrew of Robbins, Pamela Boutin Hannon of Goldston; son, Christopher Schliesman of Kansas; sister, Helen Humbertson of Biscoe; brothers, Douglas Forrest, Roger Forrest, both of Carthage, Ted Forrest of Robbins; and three grandchildren.

STRAUGHN SCOTT WHITAKER
Mr. Straughn Scott Whitaker, 62, of Pittsboro died Friday, (05-24-2013) at his home. Celebration of life services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (05-28-2013) from Pittsboro Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Troy Lesher-Thomas presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Scott was born July 8, 1950 in Chatham County, the son of William Straughn Whitaker and Frances Wilda Chester Whitaker. He was a graduate of Pittsboro High School, and attended Sandhills Community College. He was a member of Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, worked with Scott’s Tire Sales, and later with Chatham Transit. Scott was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include sons, Kain Whitaker, Kurt Whitaker, both of Pittsboro; brother, Don Whitaker of Pittsboro; and sister, Clara Lynn Whitaker Richardson of Pittsboro. Memorials may be directed to either Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, PO Box 713, Pittsboro, NC 27312; or to Carolina Dialysis.
