TOMMIE GENE BURKE
Tommie Gene Burke, 79, of Emerald Isle, formerly of Siler City, died Sunday, June 16, 2013 at his residence. Mr. Burke was born in Chatham County on November 24, 1933, the son of Eugene Goldston and Nannie Mildred (Pendergrass) Burke. Tommie managed the local Western Auto Store for 30 years and was a veteran of the Marines. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City. A former active member of the Siler City Fire Department, he served as a Captain and Assistant Chief. He was a founding member of the Rescue Squad. Tommie was also active in the Siler City Rotary Club and Chatham County Wildlife Club. He was an avid fisherman and loved traveling and camping. Tommie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Ada Jo (Boren) Burke; one daughter, Laurie Burke Clendenen; five sons, Tommie Boren Burke, Ben Eugene Burke, Mark Wheeler Burke, Jonathan B. Burke, Travis Gray Burke; two sisters, Ann Burke Braxton, Sara Burke Stultz; grandchildren, Christopher Travis Baker, Sara Ashley Baker, Elizabeth Boren Burke, Chelsea Rene’ Burke, Scott Wheeler Burke, Emily Liane Burke, Jonathan Gray Burke, Morgan Gray Burke, Jessica Lynn Burke, Nolan Rayman Burke, Grayson Truitt Burke, Sophia Barbee Burke; step-grandchild, Miriam Therese Tait; and step-great-grandchild, Serena Anne Walters. The family received friends Sunday, June 23, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. A graveside service was held Monday, June 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, North Chatham Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. JOE TROGDON
William Joseph “Joe” Trogdon, 80, of Asheboro died Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Randolph Hospice House. A graveside service was held Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery, 737 Albemarle Road, Asheboro with Dr. Donald Haynes officiating. Mr. Trogdon was born in Asheboro on November 19, 1932. He was a graduate of Asheboro High School and a 1954 graduate of North Carolina State University, where he was a member of the Army ROTC. He married Siewers Anne Peoples on August 6, 1955 and she preceded him in death in October, 2000. Joe served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the U.S. Army from 1955-1957, serving in Germany in the Army Security Agency and as a 1st Lieutenant from 1957-1963 in the inactive reserves. He served from 1957-2005 as President of S.E. Trogdon & Sons, Inc. General Contractors, a family owned business that started in 1928. Joe served on the Asheboro Planning Board from 1964-1973, the Asheboro City Council from 1973-1983, and was the Mayor of Asheboro from 1983-2001. He was the former Chairman of the Piedmont Triad Council of Government, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina League of Municipalities. He was a member of the Asheboro Jaycees, the Asheboro Kiwanis Club, and the East Hog-eye Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Red Jacket Club. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Wachovia Bank & Trust and the Board of Trustees at First United Methodist Church . In 1995, Joe was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce. On June 23, 2002 the new Asheboro Post Office was dedicated in his honor. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Siewers Trogdon Bennett and her husband Rodney of Asheboro; sons, William Joseph Trogdon, Jr. and his wife Laura, Taylor Peoples Trogdon, Sr. and his wife Denise, all of Asheboro; grandchildren, William Joseph Trogdon, III and his wife Mallory of Charlotte, Katherine Anne Trogdon of Raleigh, Taylor Peoples Trogdon, Jr., Alexis Ellen Trogdon, Rodney Alan Bennett, Jr., Elizabeth Angier Bennett, all of Asheboro; Joe’s special friend, Dillon Pollard of Asheboro; sisters, Wanda Trogdon Ilderton and her husband Clarence Ilderton, Sr. of High Point, Nina Trogdon Barone of Greensboro; sister-in-law, June Peoples Trageser and husband Joe and their children, Susan Trageser, Paul Trageser and his wife Marci, all of Pittsboro. The family received friends on Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. EFFIE MAE MOFFITT CHEEK
Effie Mae Moffitt Cheek, 96, fell asleep in death, June 20, 2013 at Universal Health Care in Ramseur. She was a native of Siler City, but lived most of her life in Randolph County. She was the daughter of Jasper and Rodenia Moffitt of Chatham County. A funeral service was held, Sunday, June 23 at 3 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Liberty, officiated by Brother Lonny May. The family received friends an hour prior to the service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayworth Cheek, sister, Genevia Cheek, brothers, Guy, Bryant, Richard Moffitt, and half-sisters, Gertrude Chavis and Thelma Patterson. Effie Cheek is survived by her three children, Winfred Cheek (Joan), Zula Matthews (Lonnie), and Annie Haith. Her grandchildren are James Haith, Torris Cheek (Buddy), Tresa Hatchett, Timothy Matthews (Buddy), Lisa Matthews Walters (Gal), Angela Oldham and Rachael Matthews (Gal). She had eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cheek was a devoted mother and housewife. She was always displaying kindness and generosity to her family and others. She enjoyed reading her Bible and cooking. She was known for her chocolate, sweet potato and egg custard pies. She was a faithful and active witness of Jehovah in the Liberty Congregation. Her meetings meant a lot to her. When she wasn’t able to attend, she would listen on the telephone. Effie also was known for her care of many children in the neighborhood.

EVA MOODY BARE
Eva Moody Bare, 91, of Siler City, died Saturday, (06-15-2013) at Siler City Center. A graveside service was held Tuesday, (06-18-2013) at 2 p.m. at Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery with Larry W. McEntire officiating. Mrs. Bare was born October 21, 1921 in Chatham County, the daughter of Murk and Cora (Dunn) Moody. She retired from Robbins & Ghant and was a member of Plainfield Friends Meeting and the Sunshine Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Bare, an infant son, Johnny Bare, two sisters and one brother.
Survivors include daughters, Charlotte B. Allsup of Pittsboro, Rejina B. Maness of Highfalls; sons, William T. Bare of Siler City , Henry W. Bare of Holly Springs; sister, Lucille Moody of Bear Creek; brothers, Tom Moody of Bear Creek, Earle Moody of Garner; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
RONALD TERRY PENNY
Ronald Terry Penny, 71, of Sanford, died Friday, (06-14-2013) at his home. A memorial service was held at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel, Tuesday, (06-18-2013) at 2 p.m. A native of Harnett County, he was a military veteran and retired attorney. Survivors include sons, Grant Penny of Asheville, Nathan R. Penny of Charlotte; and sister, Anita Griffin of California. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetic Association, P.O. JIMMY EUGENE ELIXSON, JR.
Jimmy Eugene Elixson, Jr., 50, of Pittsboro, died unexpectedly Sunday, (05-26-2013). The Celebration of Life service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, (06-04-2013) at Bynum United Methodist Church with Pastor Gina Barrow presiding. Mr. Elixson was born December 4, 1962 in Orange County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Susie Heath Elixson. Survivors include his father, Jimmy Elixson; step-mom, Nell Elixson; sisters, Susan McNeill, Kay Campbell; and brother, John Elixson, all of Pittsboro.
WALKER LEE MOODY
Mr. Walker Lee Moody, 83, of Asheboro , died Saturday, (06-15-2013) at his residence. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, (06-17-2013), at Balfour Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Reaves and Rev. Derrick Moody officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memorial Park. Military honors were provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. A native of Chatham County, Mr. Moody was born January 10, 1930. He was the son of the late Charlie Edwin Moody and Willard Anne Walters Moody. He was a graduate of Bonlee High School, and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked as an industrial insulator for over 40 years, and was a member of Balfour Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gary C. Moody; brothers, Charlie W. Moody, Duffy Moody, and Tommy Moody. Survivors include his wife, Rea Dunlap Moody; sons, Ritchie Moody of Asheboro, Dean Moody of Virginia Beach, VA, Jeff Moody of Huntersville, Tim Moody of Asheboro; sister, Sue Anne Moody Gunter of Siler City; brothers, Bobby Moody of Siler City, Jimmy Moody of Siler City; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, . PHILIP MARTIN MANESS
Philip Martin Maness, 57, of Asheboro , died Thursday, (06-06-2013) at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, (06-09-2013) at Holly Spring Friends Meeting in Ramseur, with Rev. Todd Brown and Rev. Michael Thames officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Philip was a native of Guilford County and a lifetime resident of Randolph County. He was a member of Holly Spring Friends Meeting, and owner of Maness Landscaping & Lawn Care. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Treva Presnell Maness, and brother, John W. Maness. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Yow Maness of the home; daughter, Samantha Maness of the home; sister, Becky Poteat of Connelly Springs; and brother, David Maness of Asheboro.

JOHN EDGAR MORRIS
John Edgar Morris, 95, died Monday, (06-17-2013) at First Health Hospice House in Pinehurst. Funeral services will be held at Swann Station Baptist Church, Saturday, (06-22-2013) at 2 p.m. with Rev. Russell Blackmon presiding. Burial will follow at Morris Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church fellowship hall. Mr. Morris was born in Lee County, November 7, 1917, to the late William Carl Morris and Minnie Everette Morris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a twin brother Carl Morris and a sister Margaret Ann Flynn. Mr. Morris was a veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict. Prior to his illness, he was a member of Swann Station Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Geraldine Rosser Morris of the home; a son, Robert E. Morris of Tucker, GA; and two granddaughters.
ED CECIL DAVIS
Ed Cecil Davis, 78, of Siler City , died Monday, (06-17-2013) at his home. A graveside memorial service will be conducted Friday, (06-21-2013) at 2 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Parkwith Rev. Bobby Shutt officiating. Mr. Davis was born in Guilford County and was a retired logger and farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Rosa Davis, wife, Margaret Ann Davis, brothers, Floyd and Paul, and sister, Mary. Survivors include daughters, Ruby Davis of Albemarle, Helen Davis of Siler City; son, Donald Davis of Siler City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family is receiving friends at the home. Joyce-Brady Chapel is serving the family.
REBECCA SHOFFNER McDANIEL
Rebecca Shoffner McDaniel, 91, of Siler City died Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Siler City Center. Mrs. McDaniel was born in Randolph County on October 7, 1921, the daughter of Sidney and Betty S. Shoffner. Becky was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was very creative with a lot of artistic talent. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing and quilting. She is survived by one daughter, Pam Myrick of Haw River; two sons, Robert L. “Butch” McDaniel of Siler City, James Bruce McDaniel and wife, Becky of Siler City; half-sister, Sarah Ellis of Mt Holly; grandchildren, Jeffrey McDaniel of Clemmons, Nolan Myrick and wife Tammy of Graham, Jaymie Steele and husband Chris of Burlington; great-grandchildren, Abby, Mason and Tate; step-grandchildren, Jay Fields, Rodney Fields and wife Aimee, Wendy Albright and husband Richard; special great-granddaughter, Lexi Jo Albright and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Homer McDaniel and brothers, Joe Shoffner and Sidney G. Shoffner. The family received friends Saturday, June 15, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Sunday, June 16, 2013 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Avenue, Siler City . Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City .
