GROVER LESTER ELKINS
Mr. Grover Lester Elkins, 67, of Siler City, passed away Monday, (07-01-2013) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City . Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, (07-03-2013) at 2 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel with Rev. Greg Davenport officiating. Mr. Elkins was a Chatham County native and attended Fall Creek Baptist Church. A retired auditor he owned Elkins Auditing. Survivors include daughters, Lisa Seawell of Carthage, Kristin Gillis of High Falls; sister, Carolyn Kidd of Eagle Springs; brother Edison Elkins of Florida; and two grandchildren. Visitation was held Tuesday, (07-02-2013) from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, and other times at the home of his daughter Lisa Seawell, 676 Seawell Rd., Carthage.
DORIS PERRY THOMAS
Doris Perry Thomas, 85, of Epps Clark Road, Siler City died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at her residence. Mrs. Thomas was born in Chatham County on February 29, 1928, the daughter of Wade and Lillian (Johnson) Perry. She was a member of Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church and worked for Glendale Hosiery for 41 years as a supervisor. Doris was active in her church and community, volunteering countless hours with the Silk Hope Ruritan Club’s events, especially the making of their homemade ice cream. She is survived by a nephew, Jeff Perry of Siler City; great-niece, Crystal Perry Sharp of Siler City; great-nephew, Les Perry of Siler City; step-children, Sharon Church of Asheboro, Craig Thomas of Siler City, Kenny Thomas of Siler City; five step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Margaret Pugh of Pittsboro. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Thomas and a brother, Wade Perry, Jr. The family received friends Friday, June 28, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church, 5016 Silk Hope-Gum Spring Road, Pittsboro with Rev. Jason Dickerson, Rev. Lamont Hemminger and Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church.
ANDREW “Drew” DAVIS HUGHES
Andrew “Drew” Davis Hughes, 13, of Emerald Isle, died Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Emerald Isle Baptist Church, 304 Emerald Plantation Road, with the Rev. Freddie Braswell officiating. Drew was a wonderful, caring, genuine person who had a positive impact on many lives. He could light up a room with his happy charisma. Drew was very athletic. He grew up playing baseball at Western Park, played Pop-Warner Football for the Newport Vikings, as well as football and basketball at Broad Creek Middle School where he was additionally a member of the track team. Drew was a rising freshman at Croatan High School. He had many friends who will miss him. Drew is survived by his parents, David B. Hughes, Sr. and Kimberly Davis Hughes; brothers, David “Brewer” Hughes, Jr. and Zackery “Zack” Charles Hughes, both of Emerald Isle; maternal grandfather, Billy Davis of Greenville; paternal grandparents, Cindy Hughes of Siler City and Chuck Hughes of Siler City; great-grandmothers, Tillie Thornburg of Siler City, Betty Hughes of Siler City; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family received friends at the church fellowship hall from 10–11 a.m. Wednesday. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ann Davis and paternal grandfather, Dalton Brewer. GENEVA DICKINSON “PEGGY” WILLIAMS
Mrs. Geneva Dickinson “Peggy” Williams, 92, formerly ofChapel Hill, died Friday, (06-21-2013) at Careview Rest Home in Snow Camp. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, (06-26-2013) in the chapel of Hall-Wynne. Burial followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Mrs. Williams was born in Rowland, January 17, 1921. She was the daughter of George Herefield Dickinson and Jessica Pet Jackson. The family owned and operated Williams Pure Oil Service Station. Later, she operated a daycare from her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Jackson Williams, Sr., her parents, a son, Jack Williams, Jr., daughters, Sandra Perkins, Linda Arrington, and a granddaughter, Michelle Arrington. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Lockwood of Sanford; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, make contributions to the Careview Rest Home, 2701 Moon-Lindley Road, Snow Camp, NC 27349.
ESTELLA MAE SPINKS
Estella Mae Spinks, died on Wednesday (06-19-2013) at Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough. Mrs. Spinks, was the daughter of William Squire Spinks and Ida Graves Spinks, born in Randolph County on February 22, 1927. She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church and worked for the Fox Barker family for many years. She worked at Collins and Aikman for 25 years before retirement. She was a member of the Moffitt-Poole American Legion, Post 277, Siler City . There were no immediate survivors.
LaRUTH MARSH WHITE
LaRuth Marsh White, 77, of Pittsboro died Wednesday, (05-22-2013). Mrs. White was educated in the Chatham County Schools and retired from Glendale Hosiery after 28 years. She was a member of the Evans Chapel AME Zion Church, where she sang in the mass choir, served as a missionary, was president of the Home Missions, and was a deaconess. She was a member of the Chatham-Orange Ushers Union and was president of the Evans Chapel Usher Board. She was preceded in death by her parents, Macon Marsh, Sr. and Lelia Crutchfield Marsh, husband, Ernest White, Jr., brothers, Grady Marsh, Jerry P. Marsh, Macon Marsh, Jr., Shirley L. Marsh, Clyde R. Marsh, William M. Marsh and Leroy Gowins; sisters, Mary Hobby, Corine Bridgers, Callie Mae DeGraffenreidt and Lelia Mae Burnett. Survivors include a daughter, Vernell Marsh of Siler City; sons, Vance White of Siler City, Stanley White of the home, Rodney B. White of Alexandria, VA; brothers, Cleatis Marsh, Oliver Marsh, Charles Marsh, all of Pittsboro; sister, Mexie Burnett of Pittsboro; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
OLA BYNUM ALSTON
Mrs. Ola Bynum Alston, 96, of Goldston died Monday, (06-24-2013) at her home. Funeral services will be held Saturday (06-29-2013) at 2 p.m. at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Alston, a member of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church, had been employed by Mid-State Poultry. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include daughters, Debra Paige, Bernice Lyon; sons, Lewis Alston, Frank Alston, and James Alston. Knotts & Son Funeral Home in Siler City is serving the family.
CHRISTINE CARTER
Mrs. Christine Carter, of Chatham County, died Monday, June 17, 2013. Mrs. Carter was born June 10, 1930, the daughter of the late Charlie and Lillian Sutton. She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church. She was dedicated to the Pastor’s Aide and the Thursday Bible study group she held in her home. She was employed at Mid-State Farm and later, retired from Thomasville Furniture. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Carter, Sr., sons, Lester, Jr., Roy Lee, Earl Thomas, Donald Lee, Clayton and a daughter Chris Thompson. Survivors include daughters, Patricia Johnson, Berta Shamburger, Rosa Marsh, all of Siler City, Mary Carter of Troy; sons, Gary of Siler City, Clifton of Greensboro; 20 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
MARIE HILLIARD
Marie Kepley Hilliard, 74, of Lexington died Monday, (06-24-2013) at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, (06-27-2013) at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. William Sowers and Preacher Clyde Akers. Burial will follow at Hedrick’s Grove Reformed United Church of Christ Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home. Mrs. Hilliard was born November 3, 1938 in Davidson County. Marie worked in long-term care facilities as a nurse and retired from Burlington Industries -Dentonplant. Her husband, Nathan, preceded her in death, also her mother, Ila Hunt Kepley, and an infant son, Michael Todd Hilliard. She is survived by her son, N. Wayne Hilliard of Lexington; one granddaughter; sisters, Linda Morrison, Martha Hill, and Jean Kepley, all of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington NC 27292 or to the Martha Best Children’s Center at First Baptist Church, PO Box 436, Lexington NC 27293.
REV. LUCY MAE BALDWIN
Rev. Lucy Mae Baldwin, 84, died Saturday, (06-22-2013) at her home. Funeral services will be held Friday (06-28-2013) at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Chapel Hill. Visitation with the family will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. Jones Funeral Home in Chapel Hill is serving the family.
