FRANK HENRY ALSTON
Mr. Frank Henry Alston, 68, of Pittsboro died Wednesday (01-09-2013) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
The funeral service was held Sunday (01-13-2013) at 3 p.m. at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church, with Rev. Anthony Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Alston was born in Chatham County, May 27, 1944, the son of the late Henry G. Alton and Lillie Burnett. He was a graduate of Horton High School, retired from the University of North Carolina Athletic Department and Central Carolina Bank.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Pattisall Alston; children, Henry Roderick Alston, Kendrick Alston, both of Pittsboro; mother, Lillie Burnett; brother, William Eddie Alston; and two grandchildren.
MADAR BRADY GARNER
Madar Brady Garner, 90, of Robbins, died Monday (01-14-2013).
Funeral services were held Wednesday, (01-16-2013) at 11 a.m., at Beulah Baptist Church with Pastor Neal Jackson, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was a resident of Autumn Care in Biscoe and a member of Beulah Baptist Church. She was retired from Collins & Aikman in Siler City after 31 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eli “Pete” Garner, her parents, Walter Issac and Mae Kiser Brady, and brothers, Mack Brady and Garland Brady.
She is survived by a daughter, Elva Lou Maness of Bennett; son, Donald Garner of Carthage; sisters, Lucilla Chilton of Gibsonville, Ella Mae Fagg of Ramseur, Betty Sue Greene of Seagrove; brothers, Worth Brady of Asheboro, Gale Brady of Columbia, SC, Lavan Brady of Seagrove; seven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund.
DANIEL RAY BROWN
Daniel Ray Brown, 60, of Robbins, passed away Monday, (01-14-2013).
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (01-16-2013), at Brown’s Chapel Christian Church in Robbins. Burial followed at Pine Rest Cemetery.
Mr. Brown was a Navy veteran, and retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard George Brown and Alice Guill Brown.
He is survived by his brother, Richard Brown of Robbins; and sister, Judy Davidson of Roxboro. Burial followed at Pine Rest Cemetery.
MR. LESLIE HAROLD HUMBLES
Mr. Leslie Harold Humbles, 76, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service was held Friday at 3 p.m. in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Humbles was a native and lifelong resident of Pitt County where he was a graduate of the Pitt County Schools. Harold was retired from Hendrix Barnhill Company where he worked for many years. He was a member of Ormondsville Original Free Will Baptist Church in the Ormondsville community where he sang in the choir.
Harold will be fondly remembered for his keen sense of humor and his love for family. He enjoyed building various things and also enjoyed camping in his earlier years.
In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Humbles.
He is survived by his wife, Sallie Humbles; daughter, Vickie J. H. Braxton, of Pittsboro; and grandchildren, Jessica, Melissa, Alicia and Aaron, all of Pittsboro; step-son, Doug Freeman and wife, Melinda; and step-granddaughter, Courtney Freeman, all of Greenville.
The family received friends prior to the service from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.

JAMES KELLY SEARS
James Kelly Sears passed away December 31, 2012 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Jim was a long-time resident of Dover, NH where he resided with his wife of forty years, Norma (Couture) Sears, who predeceased him in September.
Jim was born December 12, 1940 in Springfield, MA to Marie (Reagan) Sears and Kelly Sears. He spent most of his youth in Siler City attending local schools and graduating from Jordan-Matthews High School in 1958. After graduation, he entered the United States Navy, serving his country at home and on the high seas and retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1987. He then embarked on a second career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, ME where he was employed as a welder until his well-earned retirement in 1999.
Jim and Norma shared a love of animals and rescued several cats while they resided in Dover. He was a fine honky-tonk piano player and could entertain a crowd with his rendition of classic hits.
Jim is survived by his brother, David Sears of Surfside Beach, SC; David’s three children, his aunt Bartrie of Siler City, and many cousins. He was step father to Norma’s three children, Debra Andosca of Webster, NH, Ronald Gobin of Loudon, NH, and Frank Smith of Port Orange, FL. He was step-grandfather to seven, and step-great-grandfather to four. Jim made friends easily and had many lasting relationships.
Donations may be made in Jim’s name to Cochecco Valley Humane Society, 252 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.
A private service will be held in the future.
BERNARD DAVIS WILLIAMS
Bernard Davis Williams, age 92 of Siler City, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Chatham Hospital, Inc. in Siler City.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 13, at Perry Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. George Cobb and Rev. Ben Hogan officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday.
Memorials may be made to the Fairview Cemetery Fund or the family will accept flowers.
Pallbearers were Mike Pruitt, Jim Davis, James Gilliland, Bobby Baker, Larry Lowe, Hobert Reed, Billy Joe Baker and Gene Motes. Honorary pallbearers were J. C. Stallings and the Friendship Sunday School Class at Fairview United Methodist Church.
Survivors include son, Billy (Brenda) Williams of Siler City; brother, John Williams of Centre, AL; grandchildren, Wade (Tonya) Williams of Ramseur, Tory (Ashley Agee) Williams of Siler City, Todd (Jenny) Williams of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Braxton Agee, Reid Williams, Eliza Williams; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Lathan and Matt Pruitt; and special caregiver, Shirley Sutton.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Reid Williams.
Mr. Williams was a native of Cherokee County, the son of the late Fred Milford and Minnie Davis Williams and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church for 76 years. He became a church board member at the age of 19 and served on many church boards for over 50 years. He served on the ASCS committee for two years, was a member of the Hog Growers Association for eight years, serving as the president. He later became chairman for the State Hog Growers Association for eight years. He was elected by officials from Washington to serve on the National Hog Growers Board and served for six years. He helped build the boar test station, was a board member for many years, served as president for one year and as secretary for four years. He started a cemetery fund for both Fairview and Tates Chapel and served on both boards for many years, served as President for seven years and Secretary of Treasury for four years. He was a stockholder of Public Gin for years and as treasurer for eight years.
Perry Funeral Home in Centre, Alabama assisted the family and Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City, assisted with local arrangements.
DAVIS BRYANT COLLINS
Davis Bryant Collins, 88 of Sanford, died Monday, (12-31-2012) at Central Carolina Hospital.
The funeral was held Thursday, (01-03-2013) at 3 p.m. at Edgewood Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Hayes and Mr. Jody McNeill officiating. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.
Mr. Collins was born in Harnett County, October 1, 1924, to the late Dee and Flora C. Collins. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Dale Collins; grandson, Jason L. Collins; step-mother and several brothers and sisters. He served in the US Navy, was the operator of Woodland Avenue Texaco and a retired correctional officer. He was a member of Edgewood Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities, and a member of the Masonic Order.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Frances Currin Collins of the home; sons, Larry Collins, Donnie Collins, both of Sanford; daughter, Penny Grim; brother, Thurman Collins; and sister, Betty Pauley, all of Lillington; four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

PATTI TALENT OATES
Patti Talent Oates 56, of Liberty, passed away Tuesday, (01-01-2013) at her home.
A private burial will follow at a later date.
Mrs. Oates was a Stanly County native and had worked in the textile industry.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Oates of Bennett; sons, Billy Oates, Jr. of Bennett, David Oates of Illinois; daughter, Alisha Riggins of Liberty; mother, Katie B. Talent of Norwood; brothers, Charles Talent, Michael Talent, Roger Talent, all of Norwood; sisters, Crystal Talent of Exway, Pam Cox of Bennett; and eleven grandchildren.
HOMER PHILLIPS
Mr. Homer Phillips 84, of Bear Creek, passed away Monday (12-31-2012) at Siler City Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday (01-05-2013) at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Phillips was a Chatham County native and a retired truck driver. He had served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Phillips is survived by daughters, Elaine Wilhelm of Statesville, Tammy Stewart of Bear Creek, Dawn Kelly of Italy; sisters, Betty Carter, Doris DiMeo, both of Siler City, Peggy Brooks of Bear Creek; brothers, William “Shug” Phillips, Lawrence James Phillips, both of Bear Creek, Harlan “Pig” Phillips of Lexington; and six grandchildren.
BESSIE IRENE McARTHUR
Mrs. Bessie Irene McArthur Phillips, 84, of Lillington, died Wednesday, (01-02-2013), at the E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center, Lillington.
The funeral service was held Saturday, (01-05-2013) at 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Robbie O’Quinn officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
Mrs. Phillips was born on October 14, 1928, to the late Douglas Carnell McArthur and Annie Thompson McArthur. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Davie Lee Phillips; sons, Rondell Phillips of Sanford, Roger Phillips of Surfside Beach, S.C., David Phillips of Bremond, Texas; daughters, Wanda Roberts of Sanford, Sandra Ikner of Sanford; brother, Junior Ward of Pensacola, Florida; sister, Voncill Peitz of New Jersey; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

ELLA JEANETTE HARRIS STOUT
Ella Jeanette Harris Stout, 80, of Siler City died Thursday, (12-20-2012) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.
A memorial service was held Saturday, (01-05-130 at 2 p.m. in the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Wachs officiating.
Mrs. Stout was born in Chatham County on March 13, 1932, the daughter of Marcus and Bessie (Johnson) Harris. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a son, Steve Felts of Siler City; daughter, Pam Thornburg of Pleasant Garden; brother, Jimmy Joe Harris; sister, Betty Lou Johnson, all of Siler City; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
MICHAEL SCOTT HOLDER
Mr. Michael Scott Holder, of Cameron, died Saturday, (01-05-2013)
A graveside service was held at Rocky Fork Christian Church Cemetery on Tuesday, (01-08-2013), at 11 a.m.
Mr. Holder was born in Telfair County, Georgia to the late Paul Mitchell Holder.
Surviving is his wife, Malissa Venrick Holder of Cameron; sons, Clint Mitchell Holder, Dylan Scott Holder, both of Cameron; mother, Shirley Everette Holder Lord of Greenville; brother, Matthew Holder of Greenville; sisters, Rita Braxton of Mebane, Janet Hall of Greenville; and one granddaughter.
WILLIAM J. FLAHERTY
William Joseph Flaherty, 99, died Sunday, (01-06-2013), in East Carlton Powell Hospice in Lillington.
Born June 14, 1913 inIrwin, PA, he was the son of the late Minnie V. Silvis Flaherty Findle and Joseph V. Flaherty.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Hunt and a granddaughter, Joy Flaherty Baysa. A veteran of the Army, he served in World War II in the Battle of the Bulge and was retired from Westinghouse Electric.
He is survived by daughters Judy A. Sterling, Tucson, AZ, Suzanne Karrs of Sanford; sons, William E. Flaherty of Irwin, PA, Edward P. Flaherty of Sanford, Daniel L. Flaherty of San Diego, CA; sisters, Regina Frick of Phoenix, AZ, Marie Whalen, Pitcairn, PA; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Arrangements will be made by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford and Joseph Ott Funeral Home in Irwin, PA.
