SHELBY — Ms. Shemeka Twaun Dewberry Harris, 21, of 916 Fox Croft Circle, Apt. B., died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was the daughter of Ida Mae Harris Dewberry and Winfred Cordell Dewberry and a native of Cleveland County. She was a former member of New Zion Baptist Church in Henrietta and was attending First Baptist Church in Lawndale. She was a 1999 graduate of Crest High School. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Betty Watkins Dewberry and Joseph Keit. She is survived by her mother, Ida Mae Harris Dewberry of Shelby and father and step-mother, Winfred Cordell and Lillie Dewberry of Forest City; a daughter, Kamryn Victoria Harris of Shelby; her grandparents, Willie and Lucille Harris of Kingstown; two special friends, Rodney Gardner of Spartanburg, S.C. and Latrice Watkins of Lattimore; special aunts, Annie Harris of Shelby, Glenda Harris of Charlotte, Sheila Harris of Lawndale and Diane Dewberry of Tennessee; also aunts, Jonnie Mae Dewberry of Ohio, Connie Dewberry of Forest City and Reather Harris of Pittsburgh; four uncles, Ervin Dewberry of Chesnee, S.C., Greg Dewberry of Forest City, Reggie Dewberry of Ellenboro and Charles Pryor of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers, Anthony Camp of the U.S. Army in Germany and Tyrone Dewberry of Forest City; two sisters, Shanequa Watkins and Ciera Watkins both of Forest City; a special cousin, Rocky Harris; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Rev. Billy Houze officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. STATESVILLE — Ms. Kacinia Brindell Howell-White, 53, of 1008 Eastside Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Statesville. SHELBY — Mr. Mark Dwayne Chambers, 29, 1630 Friendship Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was the son of Mahaliah Jane Chambers and the late J.C. Littlejohn and a native of Cleveland County. He attended Shelby High School until his senior year when illness forced him to stop. He had also been employed by Bridges Barbecue until he could no longer work. He was a volunteer coach for the Marion School Colts Midget football team. He was a member of New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Darryl Steven Chambers. He leaves to cherish fond memories his mother, his godmother, Christine Gill of Shelby; four brothers, Paul, Maurice, Kelly and Keith Chambers all of Shelby; three sisters, Janette Elder, Patricia Williams and Brenda Chambers all of Shelby; seven half brothers, Jimmy, Calvin, Thomas, Mike, Steve, Derrick and Mark Littlejohn, all of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Willieann Chambers; two aunts, Mary Joe Petty of Shelby and Ionia Moore of Kings Mountain, and many other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. A.A. Ponder officiating. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns. SHELBY — Mrs. Minnie Wilson Lowe Saddler, 77, of 401 Highland Ave., departed this life Monday, Sept. 17, 2002, at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was born June 15, 1925, the daughter of the late Jake Wilson and Maggie Cornwell Wilson Schenk. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a former employee of Beams Nursing Home and Turner Nursing Home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses Saddler; three brothers, Summie, Miles and Jake Wilson; two daughters, Catherine and Mae Frances Lowe; two sons, Earnest and Martin Lowe; two brothers-in-law, Dolphus Sarratt and Paul Banks and a daughter-in-law, Lenora Lawrence Wilson. She is survived by a daughter, Essie Lean Lowe Tillman; a son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Marlean Lowe all of Shelby; special grandson, Antonio S. Borders of the home; two sisters, Elizabeth W. Sarratt and Regina Banks of Shelby; a son-in-law, Joseph D. Tillman Sr. of Florida; two daughter-in-laws, Marytene Lowe and Joanne Lowe both of Shelby; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; three sister-in-laws, Ida M. Wray, Vera Wilson and Alma Wilson all of Cleveland County; two brothers-in-law, James Saddler of Blacksburg, S.C. and Dewitt Wray of Kings Mountain; six special nieces, Alice Laborn, Hazel Gladdlen, Estelle Sarratt, Maggie Carson, Teresa Laborn and Linda Harden all of Shelby and a host of other relatives and friends. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Lillian Dedmond Mull, 70, of 378 Big Island Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of Flora Beason Dedmond Winn of Mooresboro and the late James S. Dedmond. She retired from Spindale Mill, was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church and was an avid camper. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Mull of the home; two sons, Randy Mull of Mooresboro and Sandy Mull of Forest City; one sister, Helen Dedmond Callahan of Mooresboro; one stepbrother, R.D. Winn of Telico Plains, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. SHELBY — Mrs. Ethel Lee Owens, 76, of 1945 Burke Road, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 20, 1924, in Winder, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Tom and Addie Lee. She retired from Lily Mill Co. as a winder operator. She attended Mellon Memorial Baptist Church and was a former member of Manna Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Owens; three sons, Chuck Owens, Ronald Owens and Rick Owens; three stepsons, the Rev. Yulon Owens, Wilbur Owens and Leaburn Owens; and a stepdaughter, Minnie Lee. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Sanders and Patricia Morrison and husband, Paul, all of Shelby and Helen Dickson and fiancée, Ted Moorefield, of Morganton; two sons, Jeff Owens and wife, Teresa, and Wayne Owens and wife, Darlene, all of Shelby; a stepson, Lee Owens and wife, Ruby, of Lawndale; a very special daughter-in-law, Virgie Owens of Polkville; a sister, Ruby Lee of Lawndale; a brother, Crawford Lee of Hickory; 21 stepgrandchildren; 19 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. ‘Butch’ Borders Jr.
CHARLOTTE — Mr. Mills Alvin “Butch” Borders Jr., 51, of 3853 Moss Craft Lane, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at University Hospital in Charlotte. He was born July 28, 1951, in Greensboro, a son Alice Cannedy Borders of Shelby and the late Alvin Borders Sr. He joined Washington Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and was a graduate of Burns High School and attended N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro. He also served as a Marine in the Vietname War. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Reginald Borders. In addition to his mother, he leaves to cherish fond memories a daughter, Crystal Wright of Shelby; two sons, Timothy Byrd of Pageland, S.C., and Wesley Borders of Shelby; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Stephen Leon and Elizabeth Borders of Shelby and Bennie Collins of Atlanta; a sister, Gina Cummings of Cape Cod, Mass.; a special friend, Dora Hearn of Charlotte; and a host of relatives and friends. ELLENBORO — Mrs. Pearl Champion Cook Newton, 90, of 1051 Mount Olivet Church Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at home. Born Jan. 12, 1912, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Edgar Grayson and Doane Jones Champion. She was a homemaker, member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class and former choir director at the church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Loyd Cook; two sons, Cecil Newton and Joe Newton; six brothers, Plato Champion, Edgar Champion, Jethro Champion, Nick Champion, Lee Champion and Herney F. Champion; and three sisters, Luesenior Laughlin, Essie Clark and Selma White. She is survived by her second husband, Cleve Edison Newton of the home; two sons, Eddie Newton of Ellenboro and Hugh Lee Cook of Hickory; four daughters, Dorothy Bray of High Point, Wanda Goodwin of Woodruff, S.C., Janice Turner of Columbus and Judy Sisk of Forest City; a sister, Kate Sealey of Long Beach; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
