James Dean Patton

James Dean Patton, 7, of Hartland Trail in Morganton, died Sunday, September 14th. He was born in Burke County on March 1, 1996 and was the son of Kelly Dean Patton and

Christine Coffman Patton of Morganton.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his brother, Kelly Michael Patton, step-brother, Joshua Neal Morton both of the home; sister, Angel Lee Patton of the home; step sisters, Erin Marie Watson of the home; Tameron Gatlin of New Bern, NC and Edie Hampton of Icard; paternal grandfather, Edgar Kelly Patton of Marion; paternal grandmother Linda Louise Patton and husband, Jerry Smith of Lincolnton; maternal grandparents; Karen and Gary Coffman of West Manchester, Ohio; Great Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Patton of Marion.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Thursday, September 18th at Bethel Baptist Church on Pax Hill Road with Rev. Burt Wilbur officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at Kirksey Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Patton family with arrangementns.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Willie Evelyn Gordon Russell

Willie Evelyn Gordon Russell, age 91, of Marion, died on Friday, June 11, 2004 at the Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Born in Buncombe County to the late James O. and Etta Pegram Gordon, she was a member of the Nealsville Church of God. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Russell; one son, Sidney Neal Gordon; one brother, Vance Gordon; and four sisters, Nelly Lance, Anna Mae McClellan, Sadie Lewis and Georgie Crompton.

Surviving are one son, Charles Gordon and wife, Christine Ray of Marion; two daughters, Frances Carswell and husband, John of Marion and Diana Greene and husband, Guy of Marion; four grandchildren, Cathy Comar of Nashville, TN, Richard Byrd of Oklahoma City, OK, Crystal Byrd of Marion and Guy Greene, III of Marion; two great grandchildren, Sonya Comar and Emerald Comar; and one great great granddaughter, Sydnie Rene‘ Carter.

Services will be held at 12 o’clock noon on Sunday, June 13, 2004 at the Nealsville Church of God with Reverend Douglas Carpenter officiating. The body will lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the services at the Church. Burial will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Saturday, June12, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Shirley A. McKinney

Shirley A. McKinney, age 52, of Nebo, died Monday, September 15, 2003 at Mission-St. Joseph’s Health System in Asheville, NC.

Born in McDowell County to Ruth Branch Thomason of Spruce Pine, and the late John Thomason, she was a lifelong resident of McDowell County and worked at Drexel Furniture. In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by one sister, Wanda Evans, and one granddaughter Emily Grace McKinney.

Surviving are her husband, Jimmy McKinney, of the home, two sons, Jimmy Dean McKinney Jr., and his fiancé, Lisa Laughter; and Joey Dean McKinney, and his wife, Jeannie, all of Marion; three brothers, Johnny Wayne Thomason, Tommy Ray Thomason, and Jay B. Thomason, all of Marion; five sisters, Lugene King, of Morganton, Karen Bartlett, of Marion, Nola Withrow, of Marion, Lynn Collins, of Marion, and Jewel Ledford, of Nebo; and two grandchildren, Cassie Faith McKinney and Ethan Dean McKinney.

Services will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion at 11 A.M. The Reverend Clifford Cable will officiate. Burial will follow in Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 from 6 until 8 PM at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Bertha Louise Franklin Lewis

Bertha Louise Franklin Lewis, 84, died Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Grace Hospital. She was born April 29, 1920 in Burke County to the late Robert A. Franklin and Cora Whisnant Franklin.

She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was retired from Holiday Laundry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Lewis.

She is survived by her son, Jerry D. Lewis of Ft. Wayne, IN; 2 daughters, Peggy A. Dale and Barbara Powell both of Morganton; 1 sister, Katherine Kaylor of Santa Rosa, CA, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with Reverend Conley Matlock officiating. Interment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Doctor Robert Lansing Paisley Sr.

Doctor Robert Lansing Paisley Sr., 87, of Riverside Drive in Morganton died Sunday November 28, 2004 at his daughters residence in Atlanta Georgia. He was born January 29, 1917 in Grayson County, Virginia to the late Edgar Paisley and Samuella Paisley.

Doctor Paisley was very active in his beloved First United Methodist Church in Morganton where he was a member of the Men’s Wesley Bible Class, Greeter for more than twenty years and a prominent member on several church committees. Doctor Paisley graduated from Hiawassee College, Emery Henry College in Virginia and Southern Dental School in Atlanta in 1941. In 1946 he moved to Morganton and opened his Dental Practice which he ran until his retirement in 1991. He was a veteran of WW II station in Norfolk Virginia and Pearl Harbor,Hawaii and at Pearl Harbor he was head of the Dental Cor. He was a member of the N.C. Dental Society . Doctor Paisley was a member of the Catawba Valley Lodge #217 for more than sixty years, member of the Burke County Kiwanis, Morganton Lions Club and Morganton Moose lodge . He was one of the original Board Members of First Citizens Bank in Morganton.

He is survived by his wife Alice M. Paisley of the home; son Bobby Paisley and wife Debbie of Morganton; daughters Martha Paisley of Raleigh and Beverly P. Cheatham and husband Richard of Atlanta; brother Paul D. Paisley of Katy Texas; sisters Edith P. Murphy of Chapel Hill, Dorothy P. Haynes of Tulsa Okalahoma; grandchildren Robert L. Paisley III, Rebecca Paisley and Richard Reed Cheatham Jr.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Doctor Robert Paisley will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Carl Lindquist and E.R. Haire Jr. officiating. A private burial will be held at an earlier time at Burke Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall at the First United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church. 200 King Street, Morganton NC 28655.

John D. Wortman

John D. Wortman, 97, of Morganton, died at 8:00 AM Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Harborside Healthcare in Terre Haute, IN. He was a retired furniture worker and a 56 year member of Casar Masonic Lodge # 579. John was born August 15, 1905 in Cleveland County, NC to David and Duffie Buff Wortman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Essie Mae Costner Wortman. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Amos Wortman and two sisters, Zula Wortman and Sara Wortman Newton.

He is survived by his son, Bill Wortman, of Terre Haute, IN, a grandson, Billy L. (Lee) Wortman and his wife, Catherine of Morganton and a granddaughter, Denise Wortman Harvey and her husband, Andy of Weston, MO.

Also surviving are nieces, Evelyn Gibson of Falls Church, VA, Francis Lane of Arlington, VA and Dorothy Crosby of Matthews, NC and a nephew, J.D. Wortman of Lawndale, NC. Great grandsons include Stephan Harvey, Matthew Harvey and Daniel Harvey of Weston, MO and one great-granddaughter, Shelby Wortman of Monroe City, IN.

The family will receive friends at Kirksey Funeral Home on Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 AM followed by a funeral service at Noon in Kirksey Memorial Chapel with Reverend Steve Parker officiating. Interment will follow the service at Forest Hill Cemetery. Family and friends are invited afterwards to the home of Lee and Catherine Wortman, 2036 Waterford Way, Morganton, NC, (828) 584-8097.

The family would also like to extend their appreciation and deepest thanks to Brentwood Adamczyk and John’s countless friends in the Chesterfield and Hartland communities for their friendship, and love and care over the years.

Mr. Bobby Gene Bennett

Mr. Bobby Gene Bennett, 65, of Morganton died Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Grace Hospital. He was born July 9, 1938 in Burke County to the late James S. Bennett Sr. and Ola Canipe Bennett . In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: a sister Sara Bennett Williams, brothers –in- laws Max Edward Williams and James Wachob; a sister-in-law Mary Ellen Fox and her husband Glen.

Mr. Bennett was a faithful member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he was an active Deacon, Sunday School Director and a member of the Church Choir. He was an Alumnus of N.C. State University,graduating in 1961, where he had earned a degree in applied math. He had retired from Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland after thirty three years of service.

He is survived by: his loving wife of forty four years Lillie Chester Bennett of the home; sons Bradley Grant Bennett and wife Cindy of Bel Air Maryland, Randy Lee Bennett and wife Kristin of Huntingdon Pennsylvania, Clayton Douglas Bennett and wife Lisa of Chester Virginia; brothers James S. Bennett Jr. and wife Peggy of Morganton, Douglas S. Bennett and wife Roberta of Conyers Georgia; sister Kitty Bennett Wachob of East Amherst N.Y.; grandchildren Robert Bennett, Samuel Bennett, Jacob Bennett, Emma Bennett and Patrick Bennett ; brother-in-laws R.L. Chester and wife Helen, Ervin Chester, Roy Chester and wife Ruby; sister-in-laws Jean Calvin and husband Luther and Iris Fox and husband Gene

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, June 19, 2004 at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Reverend Robert Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Bennett will lie in state at Mt. Olive Church from noon till 2 PM Saturday, June 19, 2004.

Mr. Robert Carlyle Lytle

Mr. Robert Carlyle Lytle, 72, of Old Fort, died Tuesday, November 30, 2004, peacefully at his residence following a long battle with Cancer. Born May 12, 1932, in McDowell County, he was a son of the late Carlyle Gudger Lytle and Mary Burgin Lytle. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lytle was also preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy & Wayne Lytle. He attended the Old Fort Wesleyan Church and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the US Army.

Mr. Lytle is survived by his wife of 51 Years, Lucille Grindstaff Lytle, of the home;

A son, David Lytle, and wife, Loretta, of Old Fort;

Three daughters, Sandra Carpenter, & husband, J.W., and Robin Smith, & husband, Terry, all of Old Fort, and Susan Bolick & husband, Lynn, of Lenoir;

Three brothers, Jim Lytle, of Ocean View, DE, Dean Lytle, of Poquoson, VA, and Harry Lytle, of Charlotte, NC;

Four sisters, Joyce Wilson & Frances Currie, both of Matthews, NC, Linda Bowen, of Montgomery, AL and Jo Johnson, of Seminole, FL;

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Rylie Nicole Lytle, Dawson Robert Lytle, Dylan Reid Lytle and Nathan Robert Smith, all of Old Fort.

Funeral Services for Mr. Lytle will be held 11:00AM, Thursday, December 2, 2004, in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort, with the Reverend Bill Tietje officiating. Interment will follow at the Bethlehem Community Cemetery, Old Fort. The family will receive friends 6:00PM-8:00PM, Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Lytle’s memory to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, NC 28752 or to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 75, Marion, NC 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Holland Craig Bristol

Holland Craig Bristol, age 93, of Marion, N.C. died Sunday May 1, 2005, at his residence.

Born in Globe, N.C. to the late William and Martha Green Bristol he was a self-employed farmer, logger and nurseryman and a member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church. He worked in a ship yard during WWII building the “Victory Ships”. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Eugene Messer Bristol ; a son, Holland Craig Bristol, Jr. and seven brothers and two sisters.

Surviving Mr. Bristol are one son, David “Bill” Bristol and wife, Laurie of Horse Shoe, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Sue Bristol of Morganton, N.C.; nine grandchildren: David Bristol, Jonathan Bristol, Justin Miller, Craig Bristol, Laura Smith, Lisa Patton, Jeff Bristol, Richard Bristol and Daniel Bristol and 11 Great Grandchildren.

Special thanks to Mary Sue Bristol, Becky Frady, Patricia Beam, Vicki Owens, Geraldine Pendley and all the members of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church for their support and care in his later years.

Services will be held 11:00 o’clock Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at Bethel Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Stockton officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Burke County. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, where the body will remain until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.
