ROY McCOLLUM
Roy McCollum, 81, of Siler City, died February 17th 2009 at his home with his loving wife of 32 years, Sara, and loving daughter, Sherry and immediate family at his side. Born Oct 9th 1927 and raised in Tuscumbia AL, he was predeceased by his first wife, Cecelia, of 25 years. In 1977, he married Sara and they resided in Birmingham, AL and Shelbyville, TN before moving to Siler City in 1984. Roy worked for Siler City Mills with his long time friend, Dennis Sawyer. In recent years, he has been employed at the local Ace Hardware.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on the 20th of February at Piney Grove United Methodist Church located at 2343 Piney Grove Church Road in Siler City with Pastor Herbert Lowry, Jr. officiating.
He served his country in the Army before acceptance into Auburn University where he majored in business. There he was a member of the ATO fraternity and Auburn orchestra. His passion for the sounds of the Big Band music era was apparent through his interest in playing the trombone, bass fiddle and piano. As a former member of the Siler City Country Club, Roy enjoyed not only the game of golf but also his many golfing buddies.
Roy’s generosity was never ending. As an old-fashioned country cook, the fruits of his labors would appear on the doorsteps of friends, neighbors and of those in need. During his walk in life, he touched many individuals with his selfless nature, through the work of his hands, the strength of his faith and the everlasting belief in always doing the right thing.
He had a variety of interests, including woodworking, fishing, caring for his beautiful roses, and watching his favorite John Wayne westerns. Roy was very involved in many civic and community organizations. He was a member of the Shriners, worked with the deaf, volunteered at the West Chatham Food Pantry, and was an active member of the Piney Grove United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Sara, his eldest daughter Sherry McCollum, her husband Lane and their daughter Jennifer McCollum as well as his youngest daughter Melanie Carr all from Huntsville, AL. He is also survived by Sara’s daughters, Deborah Wisor (Todd), Dorinda Ducar (Steve), Donna Cantrell (Chris) and Denise Dawson, grandchildren Erica, Alden, Dawson, Christopher, Sara and great grandchildren Iam and Dylan.

LOIS ELIZABETH (LIBBY) CAOUETTE
Lois Elizabeth (Libby) Caouette, 60, of 873 Tall Pine Road, Asheboro died Monday, February 23, 2009 at Randolph Health & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.
Mrs. Caouette was born February 24, 1948. She was a native of Harnett County and a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Caouette; two daughters, Angie A. Blackmon and husband, Dale of Glendon, Tonya A. Moore and husband, Dexter of Bear Creek; mother, Helen (Beasley) Gregory; one sister, Joyce Moore of Coats; two brothers, Jimmy Gregory of Emerald Isle, Buddy Gregory and wife, Judy of Coats; grandchildren, Victoria Stover, Matt Andrew, Rebecca Moore, Seth McCoy, Ricky Moore; great-grandchildren, Madelynn and Jacob Stover.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 27, 2009 from 1-2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.
The memorial service will be Friday, February 27, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel.

CALEY EARL GARDNER
Caley Earl Gardner, 80, of New Hill, died Wednesday (02-11-2009).
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (02-14-2009) at New Elam Christian Church with Rev. Gary Moore and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Gardner was a native of Durham County and the son of the late John Hurley and Ethel Johnson Gardner. He was a farmer, a member of New Elam Christian Church where he served as a deacon, and he worked at Ray’s Supermarket in Moncure.
Surviving is his wife, Jessie Hilda Holt Gardner of the home; daughters, Sybil G. Lutterloh, Ethel G. Campbell, Bonnie G. Kidd, all of Pittsboro, Marcie G. Lorbacher of New Hill; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to New Elam Christian Church Youth Fund.
DR. KENNETH ALAN TRUITT
Dr. Kenneth Alan Truitt, DVM, 64, of Bear Creek died Sunday, (02-15-2009).
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (02-21-2009) at the family home.
Dr. Truitt was a native of High Point, the son of Sam and Eula (Stone) Truitt. He attended Antioch Christian Church and St. Julia's Catholic Parish. He was owner-operator of Midway Veterinary Clinic for 35 years and was employed with the USDA for 31 years. Kenneth was a graduate of NC State University and the University of Georgia Veterinarian School.
He is survived by his wife, Carmen (Diaz) Truitt of the home; daughters, Kim T. Sonnendecker of Fuquay-Varina, Beth T. Elkins of Bear Creek, Samantha Truitt of Bear Creek, Kathryn Truitt of the home; one son, David Alan Truitt of Bear Creek, step-son, Roberto Diaz of Durham; sister, Sara T. Pulaski; and eight grandchildren.
The family received friends Wednesday, (02-18-2009) from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

BARRY DWAYNE “FRANK” SPEAGLE
Barry Dwayne “Frank” Speagle, 33, of Broadway died Monday, (02-16-2009) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Funeral services were held Wednesday (02-18-2009) at 11 a.m. at O’Quinn-Peebles Chapel in Lillington with Rev. Craig Dodson officiating. Burial followed at Harnett Memorial Park.
He was a native of Lee County and was preceded in death by his grandfather, Frank M. Speagle.
Survivors include his wife,
Marlene Colville Speagle of Lillington; parents, Charles and Deborah Leviner; grandmother: Betty Rogers Speagle, all of Broadway; sons, Tyler Dwayne Speagle of Sanford, Joey Dwayne Speagle of Broadway; daughter, Samantha Lawrence of Lillington; brothers, Larry Wayne “Charlie” Speagle, and Johnny Walter Leviner, both of Broadway.
ROBERT LOUIS JONES
Mr. Robert Louis Jones, 75, of Pittsboro died Saturday (02-14-2009) at his home.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (02-19-2009) at Community Cemetery in Pittsboro. Visitation was held from 2-7 p.m. Wednesday at C.E. Willie Funeral Chapel. There will be no wake.
WILLIE “HOWARD” GARNER
Willie “Howard” Garner, 83, of Seagrove died Saturday (02-14-2009) at Woodland Hills in Asheboro.
Graveside services and burial were held at 2 p.m. Monday at New Center Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Howard Moffitt officiating.
Survivors include sons, Ray Garner, Danny Garner, both of Seagrove, Willie Garner of Asheboro; sister, Mavine Yow of Seagrove; brothers, Amon Garner of Asheboro and Lloyd Garner of Seagrove.
MELVIN “EARL” JONES
Melvin “Earl” Jones, 68, of Bennett died Friday (02-13-2009) at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Graveside services and burial were held at 11 a.m. Monday (02-16-2009) at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Chuck Rowland officiating.
Mr. Jones was a native of Chatham County and a retired print machine operator at Randolph Mills in Franklinville.
He is survived by a sister, Ruby Jones Robinson of Bennett.
ELAINE OLDHAM HART
Elaine Oldham Hart, 78, of Sanford, died Friday (02-13-2009) at home.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday (02-16-2009) at Bethany Baptist church with Rev. Michael Herring and Rev. Del Parkerson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Hart was a native of Chatham County and the daughter of the late Marvin Oldham and Ollie Beal Oldham. She was preceded in death by husband James A. Hart, Jr. and brothers, Theron Oldham and Leon Oldham.
Survivors include a son, Donald Ray Hart; daughters, Jill Homesley of Wilmington, Gail Hart of Gaffney, S.C.; brother, Victor Oldham of Goldston; sisters, Libby Nall of Sanford, Inez Boyd, both of Vass; five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
JOAN T. TERRELL
Mrs. Joan R. Terrell, 66, formerly of Pittsboro, died Saturday (01-31-2009) at Los Angeles, CA.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday (02-14-2009) at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth M. Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Terrell was a graduate of Horton High School and a member of Mitchell Chapel Church.
Survivors include a son, Brian Vann Terrell of Charlotte; daughter, Jona Terrell of Carson, CA; brother, Harold Richardson of Sarasota, FL; and sister, Shirley Jean Wolfe of Washington, DC.
RALPH NILES MURDOCK
Mr. Ralph Niles Murdock, 66, of Bear Creek died Saturday (02-14-2009) at his home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (02-18-2009) at Centennial AME Zion Church with burial in the Thomas Marsh Cemetery.
Mr. Murdock was employed by Mountain Farms Feed Mill.
Survivors include his wife, Petenia Mauldin Murdock of the home; children, Pamela Jones of Greensboro, Fredrick R. Murdock of Bear Creek; brothers, Fredrick Murdock of Greensboro, Ramond Lewis Alston of Goldston, Rev. Cecil Alston of Siler City; sisters, Barbara McQueen of Pittsboro, Brenda Reives of Siler City, Elaine Marsh and Wanda Totten, both of Bear Creek.
WASH MACK, JR.
Mr. Wash Mack, Jr., 66, of Siler City died Tuesday (02-10-2009) at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday (02-15-2009) at the Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Sutton Mack of the home; children, LaShander Sutton of Siler City, Wayne Snipes of Sanford; sisters, Mary Eliza Hunt of Bowie, Md., Grace of White Plains, NY, Mary Hunter of New York, NY, Dorothy Hawkins of Eufaula, AL; brothers, Lawrence Mack, John Mack, both of Summeter, SC’ and four grandchildren.
RUSELL NORRIS ALSTON
Mr. Rusell Norris Alston of Siler City died Monday (02-09-2009) at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday (02-12-2009) at Knotts & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Siler City.
Rusell was previously employed with the Town of Siler City.
Survivors include children, Derrick Person of Siler City, Amanda Alston of Asheboro, Tony Jones, Toma Gladden, Cecelia Gladden, all of Ramseur; brothers, Donnell Alston, Harold Alston, Keith Alston; sisters, Zylphia Marsh, 000Myra McSwain, Sharon Hickmond, all of Siler City; and seven grandchildren.
JACKSON LEROY TANNER
Jackson Leroy Tanner, age 91, of 1216 Clyde Ave., Siler City died Friday, February 13, 2009 at Coventry House of Siler City.
Mr. Tanner was born November 7, 1917, the son of Edward Eugene and Zelma (Hamilton) Tanner, Sr.
Mr. Tanner was a native of Bremen, Georgia. He was retired Manager and CEO of Home Savings and Loan, where in 1955 he started out with Chatham Insurance and Realty and Home Savings & Loan, and in 1963 assumed CEO duties, where he semi retired on January 1, 1983, serving as Vice President from 1983 until 1997. Jack served in the US Army during WW II in the Corps of Engineers in Patton's 3rd Army. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served for over 50 years on the Administrative Board, 30 years as Finance Chairman, Past President of the Men's Bible Class and the Methodist Men's, with 30 years as Sargent at Arms. He served as Past President of the Siler City Credit Bureau. Jack was past Cub Master, District Chairman and past Finance Chairman of the Boys Scouts. He was a member of American Legion Post #93 for over 50 years, with lifetime membership and past District Commander of the American Legion. He served as past president of the Siler City Country Club. A Mason and Shriner for over of 50 years, serving as past president and treasurer of the Siler City Shriner Club, serving through the chairs and Past Master of the Siler City Masonic Lodge. He was past president of the Chatham County Wildlife Club, former member of Siler City Rotary Club and the Siler City Lion's Club. Jack was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Lon Griffin.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Maurice (Wrenn) Tanner; three daughters, Carolyn T. Clark and husband, Thomas H. of Barrington, RI, Patricia T. (Patty) Poole and husband, Russell of Siler City, NC, Jackie T. Griffin and husband, Bub of Sanford, NC; two sons, Dr. John A. Tanner and wife, Sharon E. of Camano Island, WA, William W. (Billy) Tanner and wife, Maria of Siler City, NC; one sister, Ann T. Wright of Clover, SC; nephew, Don Stevens of Lake Wiley, SC; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
The family received friends Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City. The funeral will be Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Sykes and Rev. Travis Owen officiating.
Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park with Masonic and military rites by the Randolph Honor Guard.
