CARROLL DALE BRISCOE
Carroll Dale Briscoe, Col. USAF Retired, of Pittsboro died Sunday (02-15-2009) at The Arbor at Galloway Ridge.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday (02-28-2009) in the Auditorium of Galloway Ridge with Rev. Dr. Steve McElroy officiating. Interment will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday (04-22-2009) in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Colonel Briscoe was a native of Tipton, OK, the son of Jefferson C. and Bertha Gore Briscoe. He attended the University of Oklahoma, and served in the US Army in WW II. He later earned a degree with the University of Maryland. After his military retirement, he was with USAA Life Insurance Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beti Bretherton Briscoe.
Survivors include daughter, Jun Marts of Fearrington Village, Beti Ann Sickert of Chapel Ridge; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.
CHARLES SPENCE HUBBARD
Rev. Charles Spence Hubbard, 95, of Pittsboro died Monday (02-16-2009) at his home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (02-21-2009) in Pittsboro United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Rev. Hubbard was a native of Sanford. He attended UNC at Chapel Hill. He was a retired United Methodist pastor, a member of the North Carolina Conference, serving many churches including Hickory Mountain UMC in Chatham County. He was active in the N.C. Parks and Recreation Commission.
Survivors include a daughter, Rev. Martha Hubbard Forrest; sons, Charles S. Hubbard, Jr., Thomas Edwin Hubbard, John Spangh Hubbard; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie Monroe Hubbard and Mina York Hubbard; brother, E.A. Hubbard; grandson, Rob Forrest; and wife, Mercer Reeves Hubbard.
Memorials may be made to Pittsboro United Methodist Church.
DOROTHY HARRIS THOMPSON
Mrs. Dorothy Harris Thompson, 84, of Pittsboro died at The Laurels of Chatham on Tuesday (02-17-2009).
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday (02-20-2009) at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Thompson was a native of Chatham County, the daughter of Will and Mary Herndon Harris. She was educated in Chatham County schools, employed by Carr Mill for several years, and a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister,. Hilda Potts of Durham. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; brothers, Frank and Wes Harris; and sister, Louise Mann.

DESSIE JOHNSON
Dessie Johnson, 74, of Franklinville died Wednesday, (2-18-2009) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday (02-21-2009) at Whites Memorial Baptist Church, with Rev. Jeff Joyce and Rev. Arlen Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of Marcus Hilliard and Carrie Ethel (Allred) Johnson. She was a native of Randolph County, attended Whites Memorial Baptist Church, and worked at Stedman's for 26 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clay Van Johnson.
Survivors include a son, Zendal Ray Johnson of Franklinville; daughter, Lydia Johnson Parsons of Asheboro; brothers, Steward Johnson of Asheboro, Lewis Johnson of Franklinville; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

RENO CLIFTON SHARPE
Reno Clifton Sharpe, 89, of Bear Creek died Thursday, (02-19-2009) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, (02-22-2009) at Antioch Christian Church, with Rev. Mike Harper and Rev. Clark Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery
Mr. Sharpe was the son of John Pearlman and Sarah Ann (Hart) Sharpe. He was a native of Chatham County, a member of Antioch Christian Church, and the owner/ operator of Sharpe Store. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Jourdan Sharpe and a son, Billy Sharpe.
Surviving is a son, Ricky C. Sharpe of Bear Creek.

BOBBY RAY MURRAY
Memorial services for Bobby Ray Murray, 46, of Siler City were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, (02-22-2009) at Loves Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Boyd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Murray was the son of Nathaniel "Nat" G. and the late Linda (Cain) Murray. He was a native of Chatham County, a member of Loves Creek Baptist and had worked for Townsend Poultry.
He is survived by his father, Nat Murray; step-mother, Betty Murray; sisters, Pamela Brady, Angela Murray, both of High Falls; step-brother, Kenneth Hicks of Bear Creek; step-sisters, Joyce Binkley and Loretta Hicks both of Siler City.

JAMES DOYLE MOORE
James Doyle Moore, Retired Staff Sergeant, 74, of Eagle Springs died Saturday (02-21-2009) at Pinelake Health Care in Carthage.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday (02-23-2009) at Browns Chapel Christian Church with Rev. James Brewer officiating. Burial with military honors followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Moore was a native of Moore County, retired from the Air Force, the furniture industry, and attended Browns Chapel Christian Church. He was the son of the late Riley and Connie Hussey Moore and was preceded in death by siblings, Dempsey Hussey and Dexter “John” Moore.
Surviving is his wife, Geraldine S. Moore of the home; daughter, Vickie Craig of Robbins; sons, Mike and Kenneth Moore, both of Eagle Springs; sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Garner, Deseree Hussey, Darlene Brewer, all of Robbins; brothers, Jerry and Bobby Moore, both of Robbins; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
VERA BELLE DARNELL GARNER
Vera Belle Darnell Garner, 79, of Sanford died Tuesday (02-17-2009) at Central Carolina Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (02-21-2009) at the Farmville Cemetery.
Mrs. Garner was a native of Moore County, the daughter of the late Cleatus Darnell and Ollie Marsh Darnell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Junior A. Garner; brother, Boyd Darnell; and sister, Pauline Wicker.
Survivors include sons, Roger Garner, David Garner, Tony Garner, all of Sanford, Greg Garner of Houston, TX; sister, Lillian Seagroves of Sanford; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
VIRGINIA PAULINE TALBERT BETTS
Virginia Pauline Talbert Betts, 77, died Wednesday (02-18-2009) at Liberty Commons.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday (02-21-2009) at Turners Chapel with Rev. Bruce MacInnes officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Betts was a native of Moore County, the daughter of the late Causey Talbert and Mary Victoria Simmons Talbert. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Betts, three brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Robbie Sirls of Bear Creek; brother, James Talbert of Whispering Pines; sisters, Ruby Fowler of Sanford, ruth Garner of Vass; and two grandchildren.
ELIZABETH ANNETTE McNEILL
Elizabeth Annette McNeill, 49, of Siler City died Monday, (02-23-2009) at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (02-26-2009) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Rodney Staley officiating. Burial will follow in Cypress Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cameron.
Ms. McNeill was the daughter of Walter Carl and Lima (Averitte) McNeill, a native of Sampson County and attended Lighthouse Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, brothers, Jerry and Stevenson McNeill; and sister, Carolyn Buchanan.
Survivors include a son, Jonathan Carl Burke of Pittsboro; mother, Lima (Averitte) McNeill; sisters, Shirley M. Guy of Fayetteville, Helen M. Hughes of Pittsboro; brothers, Robert Carl McNeill and Ronald D. McNeill, both of Pittsboro.

ROY T. “FROG” APPLEWHITE, JR.
Roy T. “Frog” Applewhite, Jr., 52, of Bennett died Sunday (02-22-2009)
Graveside service and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (02-26-2009) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Tim Strider officiating.
Mr. Applewhite was a native of Dade County, Florida, a longtime employee of Liles Plumbing and Heating, and also a self-employed plumber. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Branson Applewhite.
Survivors include daughters, Casey Applewhite of Bennett, Stacey Applewhite of Nashville, Tennessee; sister, Debbie Applewhite of Siler City, Beckie Brewer of Bennett; brothers, Ralph Applewhite of Siler City and George Applewhite of Ellerbe.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday (02-25-2009) at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

MAXINE DAVIS LANGLEY
Maxine Davis Langley of Staley died Tuesday, February 17, 2009.
Mrs. Langley was the daughter of William Henry and Clady (Poe) Davis, a native of Chatham County and a member of Staley Baptist Church, secretary for the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and Sunday School secretary for many years. She was well known for her delicious sour dough bread and cakes. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Romie J. Langley; son, Melvin " Shot" Langley; son-in-law, Robert Edward Joyce; brothers, Frank, Jack, Bill, Calvin, Herbert (Buck) Davis; and sister, Van Stinson. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Universal Health Care of Ramseur and caregivers Donna, Bessie and Martha.
She is survived by one daughter, Rachel Langley Joyce of Burlington; one sister, Beatrice "Dot" D. McPherson, and husband, Dave of Siler City; two brothers, Atlas "Mutt" Davis of Siler City, Clyde Davis and wife, Treva of Siler City; granddaughter, Tahia D. Langley of Staley; daughter-in-law, Carole B. Langley of Staley; sisters-in-law, Mary Frances Davis of Siler City, Malda Davis of Siler City, Gloria Lee of Myrtle Beach, SC; and extended family members, Scott, Brandon and Bronson.
The family received friends Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. The funeral was held Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Daniel Gregory and Rev. Clifford Williams officiating. Burial followed in Staley Cemetery.

PAULA RUTH DODD PHILLIPS
Paula Ruth Dodd Phillips, 60, of 104A Hunters Court, Siler City died Saturday, February 21, 2009 at her residence.
Ms. Phillips was born January 9, 1949 the daughter of Roy Joseph and Esther K. (Darden) Dodd. Ms. Phillips was a native of Chatham County and of the Methodist faith. She had been employed as an administrative assistant. Paula was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Joseph and Esther K. Dodd.
She is survived by two sisters, Teresa D. Crutchfield of Liberty, Kristin D. LeRoy and husband Cliff of Ely, MN; special nieces, Brooke Crutchfield of Liberty, Brandy Johnston of Minneapolis, MN; special cousin, Brenda Coward of Siler City; special friend, Debra Johnson of Siler City; second mother, Margie French of Siler City; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family received friends Monday, February 23, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344. The memorial service was held Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Chan Shaver officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
