Mr. James Edward Miller, 61, of Pittsboro died Friday (03-13-2009) at Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro.
Funeral services were held Wednesday (03-18-2009) at C. E. Willie Funeral Chapel.
PAUL JAMES “P. J.” SPIVEY
Paul James “P.J.” Spivey, 29, of Raywood Court in Matthews, NC died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
Paul was born August 28, 1979 in Wake County, NC, and was a son of Ray Spivey of Matthews and the late Reitzel Lynn Medley Spivey. Paul was an avid Tarheels fan.
In addition to his father, he is survived by brothers, Jerry Wayne Hill, Jr. and wife, Hope, of Vale, NC, and Timothy Allen Curry and Donna of Granite Falls, NC; a sister, Wanda Lynn Spivey of Matthews; his grandfather, Reitzel Medley of Gastonia, NC; three nieces and two nephews.
Along with his mother, Paul was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Dorothy Spivey; and maternal grandmother, Wanda Medley.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 12, 2009 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Pastor James Bowman officiating. Burial followed at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
ALLEN THOMAS COCKMAN
Allen Thomas Cockman, 79, of Devils Tramping Ground Road, Bear Creek died Sunday, March 15, 2009. Mr. Cockman was born March 21, 1929 the son of Atlas Franklin and Lizzie McIver Cockman.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and broth-er. Allen was devoted to his grandchildren. He was a native of Chatham County, retired from Collins & Aiken and a Marine Veteran of the Korean War. Allen was a member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class. He coached pony and little league ball and for over 50 years was involved with the Chatham Central athletic program. Allen was honored when a scholarship fund was named in his honor. He enjoyed rabbit hunting and was a member of the Black Mountain Hunting Club. He was preceded in death by brothers, Pete, Otis and Bill Cockman.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Sessoms Cockman; two daughters, Jeannie C. Murchison and husband, Lynn of Goldston, Penny C. Pavon and husband, Ismael of Siler City; one son, Phil Cockman and wife, Sandra of North Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Frankie C. Mueller of Siler City, Mary Cockman of Chico, CA; one brother, Buddy Cockman of Siler City; step-son, Jeff Sessoms and wife, Susan of Siler City; granddaughters, Denise Watts and husband, Page of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Victoria Pavon of Siler City; grandson, Zach Pavon of Siler City; step-grandsons, Jake and Justin Sessoms of Siler City.
The family received friends Tuesday, March 17, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church, 10891 Siler City-Glendon Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Randy Hand and Rev. Scott Walker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites.

HOLLAND BROADWAY GAINES
Mr. Holland Broadway Gaines, 93, of Goldston went to be with the Lord March 16, 2009. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m.Wednesday March 18, 2009 at the Goldston Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitch Roginsky officiating. A visitation was held on Tuesday March 17, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford.
Mr. Gaines was born August 24, 1915 in Antioch, to the late Benjamin and Nannie Barber Gaines. He was a member and former deacon of Goldston Baptist Church, a member of the Town Board in Goldston, the Lions Club, and life member of the Goldston Fire Department Board.
Mr. Gaines loved reading his Bible daily, and he led a blessed life. Mr. Gaines had a two word philosophy for life “Be Smart”. He also enjoyed traveling in the US and abroad, especially the trip he and his wife took to the Holy Land. Mr. Gaines worked for his father at Gaines Lumber, and later he and his brother Corbett took over the business. He was also a cattle farmer in Goldston enjoying the time he spent outdoors.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Gaines was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Esther G. Foster, Corbett Gaines, Garrett Gaines, Alcine G. Miller, Arthur Gaines, and Martha Ann G. Elkins.
Mr. Gaines is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Elsie Matthews Gaines; their children Daniel Gaines of Goldston, Patricia DeLoach of Goldston, Holland C. Gaines and wife Becky of Apex, Alan Gaines and wife Sharon of Chapel Hill; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Gaines, Mrs. Robert Fagg; 12 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Goldston Baptist Church P.O. Box 100 Goldston, NC 27252; or Liberty Hospice, 1005 Carthage St., Sanford, NC 27330.
Miller-Boles Funeral Home of Sanford is assisting the family.
LOUISE JACOBS RAGAN
Mrs. Louise Valley Jacobs Ragan, 91, of Apex, died Tuesday (03-03-2009) at UNC Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (03-06-2009) at Olive Chapel Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Ragan was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Wilkerson Ragan and her parents, Loffie and Lyda Jacobs. She was a native of Chatham County and a member of Olive Chapel Baptist Church. Through the years, she was employed in the Bells School cafeteria, Apex Nurseries and Jean’s Berry Patch.
Survivors include daughters Jean Copeland, Brenda Haithcock; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Olive Chapel Baptist Church, designate either the Building Fund or Maggie Bell Handbell Choir.
EVELYN GRACE FAULK
Evelyn Grace Summerlin Faulk, 68, of Mount Olive, died Wednesday (02-25-2009) at Carolina East/Quinn Hospice Center in Kenansville.
Services held at 11 a.m. Saturday (02-28-2009) at Tyndall Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Rose officiating. Entombment followed in the Faulk Family Cemetery, near the residence.
Mrs. Faulk was the daughter of the late Robert H. and Letha Mae Summerlin. She retired from Burlington Industries and had been active in the family farming operation. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Oliver, Herman, Russell, Melvin, and Ricky Summerlin.
Survivors include her husband, Oliver H. Faulk, Sr. of the home; daughters, Janet Faulk Wyatt of Pittsboro, Lynn Faulk Outlaw of Mount Olive; son, Oliver H. Faulk, Jr. of Mount Olive; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara S. Price of Mount Olive, and Nannie Ruth S. Bradford of Fayetteville.
ELIZABETH ANN (BETH) DIXON
Ms. Elizabeth Ann Dixon, 78, of Mt. Vernon Springs passed away Tuesday (03-03-2009) at the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
The funeral was held at 1 p.m. Friday, (03-06-2009) at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Tony Capehart, Rev. David Dixon and Rev. J.R. Bouldin officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.
She was born in Yakima, Washington, the daughter of Jesse Franklin and Bertha Belle Smith Dixon. She graduated from Mars Hill College, Meredith College, and UNC Greensboro, and taught at J. Motley Morehead High School in Eden, retiring with thirty years service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Siler City, and the Mt. Vernon Springs Preservation Society.
Ms. Dixon is survived by three brothers, Robert Dixon of Mt. Vernon Springs, George T. Dixon of Overland Park, Kansas, and Dr. John H. Dixon of Marvin.

JOHNIE ALSTON, JR.
Mr. Johnie Alston, Jr., 91, of Pittsboro died Friday (02-27-2009) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (03-03-2009) at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Alston was a member of Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church where he was a member of the male chorus, class leader, and a steward.
Survivors include his wife Ruth Reaves Alston of the home; children, Johnie London of Pittsboro, Lecy Alston, Elna Smith, Cynthia Suggs, Annette Alston, all of Durham; brothers, Joseph Alston of Durham, Alvis Alton of Pittsboro; sister, Lille Burnett of Pittsboro; and four grandchildren.
TIMOTHY NEILL CAMERON
Timothy Neill Cameron, Jr., 17, of Broadway died Thursday (03-05-2009).
A native of Lee County, he was a senior at Western Harnett High School, and a member of Spring Hill United Methodist Church youth. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harold Duncan Upchurch.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday (03-09-2009) at Spring Hill United Methodist Church in Lillington with Rev. Terry Williams officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors include parents, Timothy Neill and Donna Lindley Cameron of the home; sister, Morgan Gray Cameron of the home; grandparents, Martha Stover Rogers of Jamestown, Thelma Cameron of Lillington, and Dwight Lindley of Siler City.

RUTH WHITNEY CLARK
Mrs. Ruth Whitney Clark, 94, of Pittsboro, died Monday, (02-23-2009) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Mrs. Clark’s cremated remains will be interred in Mountain View Cemetery in Bloomfield, CT.
Mrs. Clark was born in Beverly, MA, the daughter of Charles Ray Whitney and Mary E. Durdan Whitney. She retired as a bookkeeper from the tool and die industry, moved to Pittsboro, where she became a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sons, William B. Knox of Pittsboro; Charles Knox of Platteville, WI, and Andrew Knox of Bloomfield, CT; daughter, Carolyn Hopkins of Keuka Park, NY; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to either Habitat for Humanity or the charity of one’s choice.
JOSEPH “RUSSELL” GARNER
Joseph “Russell” Garner, 83, of Robbins died Friday (03-06-2009) at his home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday (03-09-2009) at Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Kidd and Rev. Edsel Caviness officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Garner was a native of Moore County and a retired loom fixer from Robbins Mill. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Goodness Sunday school class and the church choir.
Survivors include his wife, Uznia Caviness Garner of the home; daughters, Diana Shields, Faye Garner, Vera Montjoy, Marilyn Garner, all of Robbins; sons, Danny Garner of Asheboro, Gregory Garner of High Point; sisters, Edna May of Burlington, Texie Garner of Carthage, Ethelene Davis and Donarose Ritter, both of Robbins; brother, Herbert Garner of Robbins; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

CLAYTON PEARLIMAN MARSHALL
Mr. Clayton Pearliman Marshall, 91, of Pittsboro died Tuesday (02-24-2009) at Blue Ridge Health Care Center in Raleigh.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (02-27-2009) at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Shelby Stephens officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Marshall was a native of Chatham County, the son of H.M. and May Lutterloh Marshall. He was educated in Chatham County, retired as a welding supervisor from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock, and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents, his wife Carlene Curl Marshall, a daughter Denise, and a brother, Wallace.
Survivors include son, Doug Marshall of Raleigh; daughter, Diane Turner of Raleigh; brother, John Marshall of Pittsboro; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
