KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Paul Plato Short, 89, of 812 Third St., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. He was a native of Cleveland County and son of the late Joe Baxter and Hulda Morrison Short, also preceded in death by brothers, Ray Short and Jerry J. Short. He was a supervisor in the textile industry and a member of East Gold Street Wesleyan Church in Kings Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Biddix Short of Kings Mountain; two sons, Donald Short and wife, Dorothy, of Shelby and Kenneth Short of Bessemer City; a stepson, Mike Rippy and wife, Sherry, of Grover; a daughter, Sandra Wright and husband, Steve, of Grover; a stepdaughter, Barbara Desse and husband, Warren, of Kings Mountain; a sister, Novella Foster of Kings Mountain; 12 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at East Gold Street Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Eddie Gray and LeRoy Cox officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Jessie Beatrice Proctor Walker, 91, of 315 West College Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Born in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Cordelia Johnson Proctor. She attended Mars Hill College and retired as credit manager after 23 years of service with Belk Department Store in Shelby. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Rev. Charlie W. Walker, four brothers, Jack, Bill, Charles and “C.L.” Proctor; two sisters, Miss Elsie Proctor and Mrs. Ruth McGraw. She is survived by a daughter, Linda W. White, and her husband, Ed, of Boiling Springs; two sisters, Miss Imorae Proctor of Forest City and Mrs. Connie Ruppe of Rutherfordton; three grandchildren, Dean White, Edwin White, and Heidi Dobbins and her husband, Joel, all of Boiling Springs; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob and Madeline Dobbins. The funeral will be today at 6:30 p.m. at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Carroll Page officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Cleveland Memorial Park. SHELBY — Mr. Arthur Lee “Bubba” Eaves, III, 38, of 401 Murdock Circle, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Wanda Petty Eaves Guest of Shelby and the late Arthur Eaves, Jr. He attended Crest High School and was employed at Anvil Knit, of Kings Mountain. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Cory Pryor. He is survived by his wife, Toni Patterson of Forest City; his mother, Wanda Petty Eaves Guest of Shelby; his stepfather, Bobby Guest of Shelby; three sons, Jaquavine Phillips and Devontavius Hopper both of Shelby and Clifton Moses of Charlotte; two daughters, Tisha Eaves of Forest City and Alesha Barnum of Shelby; five brothers and sisters-in-law, the Rev. Albert and Monica Petty, Bobby Gene and Mae Petty, Chris and Tim Guest and Perez and Pam of Guest, all of Shelby and Clarence Winston of Gaffney, S.C.; two sisters, Sandra and Jerry Smith of Shelby and Aretha “Thickie” and J.D. Livsey also of Shelby; a special aunt, Alma Jackson of Shelby; a special cousin, Mike Strong of Shelby; his godfather, Victor Smith of Shelby and many other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Walls Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns. SHELBY — Mrs. Nellie Winbush Vinson, 87, of 429 Leander St., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Century Care. Born in Jones City, Ga., she was a daughter of the late John Winbush and Cora Trumble Winbush. She was a homemaker and member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Charlie Vinson; two sons, John Thomas Vinson and Andrew Vinson of Lawndale; four daughters, Lucille Vinson, Hazeline Vinson, Irene Odom, all of Shelby and Lillie Smith Thomas of Hickory; a brother, Oump Winbush of Detroit, and a sister, Essie Winbush Rawl of Hickory; 21 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Dockery’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Otto Floyd Rayfield, 84, of 1207 Foster Road, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at VA Hospital in Salisbury. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church in Kings Mountain with the Revs. Mitchell Pruitt and Gary G. Rayfield officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The body will be taken to the home this afternoon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Boyd Willis
SHELBY — Mr. Boyd Robert Willis, 90, of 114 Sunrise Circle, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Belwood, he owned Willis Restaurant and worked in the restaurant business for more than 75 years. He was the inventor of the Burger Basket and was the first person to use big buns on his hamburgers, having to have a mold made in New York. He was also a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald Robert Willis, and his daughter, Carolyn Willis Owens. He was the son of the late Joe F. and Fannie Prichard Willis. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pauline Blanton Willis; son David H. Willis and wife, Shirley, of Shelby; daughter, Brenda W. McDonald and husband, David, of Pompano Beach, Fla.; brother Fred Willis and wife, Mabel, of Shelby; sister Faye W. Wilson of Shelby; grandchildren Rhonda Bridges, Kim Ledbetter, Dawn Muller, Angie Bridges, Deidre Kiser, Nancy Bumgardner, Donna Willis, Cathy Galloway, Dara McDonald, Wendy Kiser and Danielle Kwasnik; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. A graveside service is today at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family received friends Sunday and at other times will be at the home. Cecil M. HICKORY — Mr. William Edward “Dub” Falls, 83, of 603 29th Ave. N.E., Condo 136, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at home. Born Aug. 17, 1919, he was a son of the late John Franklin and Irene Costner Falls. He retired from Borden Chemical and also was a retired farmer. He was a lifelong member of New Bethel Baptist Church of Lawndale and attended Lake View Baptist Church of Hickory. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Della Lee Turner Falls; five brothers and four sisters. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Phillip Powell of Hickory and Sheila and Jay Weichel of Raleigh; an adopted son and his wife, Sherrill and Lucille Edwards of Shelby; a brother, John Falls of Lawndale; a sister, Ruth Hamrick of Lattimore; a special friend, Menola Williams of Hickory; eight grandchildren, Jessica Bernhardt, Melissa Leak and her husband, Frank, Angela Cannon and her husband, Christopher, Clay Schluchter and his wife, Megan, Kurt Schluchter, Windy Schluchter, Scott Edwards and Elizabeth Oliver and her husband, Dale; and five great-grandchildren, Eliza Leak, Annie Leak, Charles Cannon, Craig Oliver and Courtney Oliver. Ned Beam
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Ned Beam, 75, of 2010 Lincolnton Highway, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Carolina Care of Cherryville. A native of Cherryville, he was born Aug. 9, 1927, a son of the late Marshall and Flossie Houser Beam. He retired as general superintendent of Beam’s Construction Co. He graduated from Cherryville High School, served in the Navy and belonged to First Baptist Church of Cherryville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Hicks Beam, and a brother, Martell Beam. He is survived by three sons and their wives, Kyle and Jan Beam of Huntersville, and Blair and Kim Beam and Mark and Dawn Beam, all of Cherryville; two stepsons, Michael Jarrett of Booth Bay Harbor, Maine, and Bruce and Terri Jarrett of Clemson, S.C.; a daughter and her husband, Robin and Greg Cox of Cherryville; 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Johnnie Mae Gill
GREAT NECK, N.Y. — Ms. Johnnie Mae Gill, 73, of 53 Summer Ave., died Friday, Sept, 27, 2002, at home. She was the daughter of the late Joshua Wilson and Thedoshia Banks Gill. Born in Cherokee County on Sept. 3, 1929, she was a member of the St. Paul AME Zion Church in Great Neck, where she served in many capacities. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilson Gill Jr., Marcellus Gill and Bennie Gill; and one sister, Alice Caldwell. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Marcellus Gill of Victoria, Australia; three grandsons, Marcellus M., Jacob Gill and Kennedy C. Gill, all of Victoria, Australia; daughter-in-law Rose Gill of Phnom Ponh, Cambodia; six sisters, Bobbie Hemphill and Ruby Mungo of Charlotte, Viola Scott and her husband, Tillman, Juanita Smith, LaEnnice Gill and Naomi Parker, all of Great Neck; two brothers, Hazel L. Gill of Kings Mountain and Richard Gill and his wife, Betty, of Gastonia. The funeral will be Thursday at St. Paul AME Zion in Great Neck with the Rev. William J. Jiles officiating. J.W. Frances Lutz
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Frances Houser Lutz, 91, of 200 N. Main St., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Carolina Care in Cherryville. She was born in Gaston County on April 4, 1911, daughter of the late Horace and Vangie Falls Houser. She was a longtime member of the Waco Baptist Church, where she served as clerk. She was also a beautician, a longtime member of the Waco Women’s Club, and a retiree from Fiber Industry. She was one of the most pleasant clients during her stay at Carolina Care. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William Hoyle “Coot” Lutz in 1999; a son Hoyle Lutz Jr. in 1959; two brothers, William and Douglas Houser; and a sister, Linda Blanton. Survivors include a son, Horace Lutz, mayor of Waco; grandson Jason Heath Lutz and wife, Katherine, of Memphis; great-granddaughter, Kayla Renee Lutz of Memphis; brother George Houser of Gastonia; and sister, Lois Williams of Clemson, S.C. The funeral will today at 3 p.m. at Waco Baptist Church with Dr. Harold Fite officiating. Burial will be in Capernum Cemetery. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Ruby Laws Moss, 78, of 111 Cyclone Lane, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Rutherford County and was the daughter of the late J.D. and Cora Lee Robinson Laws. She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert James Moss. She is survived by her sons, Gary Michael Moss and Phillip Moss, both of Kings Mountain; her daughters Sheila Elaine Moss of Kings Mountain and Paula Lumb of Sylva; five grandchildren, Gary Michael Moss II and Kyle Myers Moss, both of Kings Mountain, Jennifer Lumb and Julia Lumb, both of Chapel Hill, and Laura Lumb of Sylva. The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain with the Rev. Ansel Center officiating. ‘Jenny’ Bridges
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Virginia “Jenny” Bridges, 72, of 1204 York Road, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Cleveland County, daughter of the late Sinclair S. and Myrtle Carroll Bridges. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Bridges, Paul Lawrence Bridges and Bill Bridges. She retired from Burlington Industries and was an employee of the Kings Mountain Herald. She was a member of the Cherokee St. Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and was much loved and will be greatly missed by her surviving family and a host of friends. She is survived by two sisters, Barbara Fitch and husband, Sam, of Kings Mountain and Carol Ann McMillan and husband, Spurgeon, of Scotland County; a sister-in-law, Joyce Bridges of Kings Mountain; three nieces; five nephews; and nine great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Herman Greene officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. He was employed as a manager-data processing coordinator and was a member of Lattimore Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Ann Childers Fite of the home; two sons, Jason and Ethan Fite, both of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Steve and JoAnn Fite of Shelby; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kevin and Trudy Bridges of Kings Mountain; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Margaret Childers of Kings Mountain; and three nieces, Katie Bridges, Kayla Fite and Janna Fite. SHELBY — Mr. Sidney Clyde Hilton, 77, of 2115 Jack Wilson Road, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at VA Nursing Center in Asheville. Born March 17, 1925, in Union County, he was a son of the late Franklin Joseph and Sarah Jane Tadlock Hilton. He retired from Brandt Inc. and was a member of Zion Baptist Church, Golden Years Club at Zion, Max Cornwell Sunday School Class and former member of the choir. He served in the Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater and received the Purple Heart, five Bronze Stars and Sharp Shooter Metal. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Wilson Hilton of the home; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike Hilton of Charlotte, Rodney and Donna Hilton of Columbia, S.C., and Joseph Hilton of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Carroll Watts of Charlotte; a sister, Kathleen H. Johnson of Lumberton; two stepdaughters, Angela Bishop of the home and Carmen Bishop of Leesville, La.; two granddaughters, Patricia Hilton of Charlotte and Chrystal Hilton of Columbia, S.C.; and six grandsons, Sheldon Watts and Todd Watts, both of Charlotte, Steven Hilton and Byron Watts, both of Indian Trail, Justin Hilton of Columbia, S.C.; and one great-grandson, Tyler Hilton of Indian Trail.
