LEONARD NEWTON GUNTER

Mr. Leonard Newton Gunter 80, of 109 Asbury Church Road, Sanford, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Duke University Hospital.

Mr. Gunter was born in Chatham County, NC on October 7, 1928, to the late Joseph Edward Gunter and Clara Burns Gunter. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Kremer and Irene Hart.

Mr. Gunter worked for many years at Sanford Brick and retired as a plant superintendent with Chatham Brick. He served in the Navy following WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church for over 60 years; where he served as Sunday School superintendent, teacher, lay speaker, choir member and church historian. He also sang with the Gunter Quartet.

He is survived by his wife Betty Morrison Gunter to whom he was married on October 7, 1948; three children, Leonard Gunter, Jr. and wife Roxie, Linda G. Greer and husband Malcolm and John Edward “Eddie” Gunter and wife Terri all of Sanford; grandchildren, Mickey and Laura Woodard of Cary, Travis and Amanda Gunter of Chesterfield, SC, Monica Gunter of Cary, Joseph Bullock of Raleigh, Karen Bullock of Cary, Tiffany and Zach Hinnant of Apex, Adam Gunter and Evan Gunter both of Sanford; great-grandchild, Savannah Rose Gunter of Chesterfield, SC; and two brothers, Herbert Gunter of Sanford and Ira Gunter of Vass.

A father in Israel has fallen. A good man has exchanged this world of sin and sorrow for one of peace and quietude. Leonard served His Lord and Savior with all his might, constantly exercising an influence for good upon all with whom he was associated. This writer saw him during his last illness and he continued to maintain a perfect resignation to the will of God, and a humble trust in His promises which is rarely to be met with under such trying circumstances.

It was indeed Christ for him to live, but an eternal gain to die. That religion which he professed to have in health, did not forsake him when affliction came, nor when the monster death was grappling with his life.

He was a faithful and loyal husband to his wife Betty for over 60 years and a proud, loving, and doting Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather.

The text which so beautifully portrays his feelings and trust even in a dying hour is II Timothy 4:6-8: “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them that love His appearing.”

Leonard’s testimony is one of a Fight well fought, a Course well run; A Faith well kept, and a Crown well won.

The visitation was held Tuesday, May 5, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. funeral service was be held Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Asbury United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Burns and Rev. Steve Johnson presiding. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
