JAMES EMERY HAVEL

James Emery Havel, 61, of 25 Creekside Drive, Pittsboro, died unexpectedly at his home on August 30, 2009. Jim was born on November 16, 1947 in Passaic, New Jersey to James and Mary Havel, and was the older brother of John Michael Havel.

Jim graduated from Fair Lawn High School in Fair Lawn, NJ in 1965 and attended RCA Institute in New York City for several years. For many years he was the manager of the Automotive Department at the Sears & Roebuck store in Paramus, NJ. He moved to Pittsboro in 1997 to be closer to family members.

Jim is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John M. Havel and Aida Doss Havel of Raleigh, NC; his nephew, Christopher James Clifford Havel of Siler City, NC; two uncles, Michael Krehel of Stuart, FL and George Krehel of Northville, NY; his dear friend and former sister-in-law, Jeannie Mantell Havel of Emmitsburg, MD and her daughter Katherine Krushinski of Springfield, MO; and several cousins.

A memorial service for Jim was held Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 7 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh.

ALONZO DAVID HORTON

Mr. Alonzo David Horton, 82 of Bear Creek died Sunday (08-16-09) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday (08-20-09) at St. Luke United Church in Goldston.

Mr. Horton is the son of the late Simuel and Lizzie Horton and a native of Goldston. He was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and superintendent of Sunday School. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the NAACP, Goldston Alumni, Goldston Star Lodge #688, Farm Bureau, and the Sons of Varick.

Survivors include his wife, Earna Mae Hart Horton of the home;and a sister, Nathelia Carter of Ossining, NY.

LINDA MANN LORBACHER

Linda Mann Lorbacher, 66, of Pittsboro, died Tuesday (08-18-09) at UNC Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday (08-22-09) at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery.

Linda was born in Martin County, the daughter of James and Ruth Grimes Mann. She was employed by the A&P Grocery company for thirty years, and retired from Lowes Foods. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Johnnie A. Lorbacher, Sr.; sons, David Lorbacher of New Hill, John Lorbacher of Collinsville, IL; daughter, Cindy Buckner of Thomasville; sisters, Nancy Williams of Apex, Janie Shaw of Pittsboro; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Youth Group, 269 Manns Chapel Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

BEATRICE “BEA” OVERMAN TEAGUE

Beatrice "Bea" Overman Teague, 77, of Bear Creek died Thursday, (08-20-09) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

Graveside services were held Sunday, (08-23-09) at 2 p.m. at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Scott Walker officiating.

Mrs. Teague was the daughter of James Wesley and Myrtle Hackney Overman. She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Thomas Teague.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Teague of Bear Creek; son, Jerry Teague of Bear Creek; sisters, Mary Alice Williamson of Ramseur, Hermis Overman of Staley; brothers, Dean Overman of Bear Creek, and Leon Over-man of Siler City.

DANIEL MORGAN “DANNY” JOHNSON

Daniel Morgan "Danny" Johnson, 59, of Siler City died Monday, (08-24-09) at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, (08-27-09) at 2 p.m. at Meroney United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Whittaker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Johnson was the son of Elbert and Mary Hazel Castevens Johnson. He was a native of Chatham County and a self employed painter. He is preceded in death by a son, Daniel L. Johnson, his father, Elbert Johnson and a brother, Jesse Johnson.

Survivors include sons, Don Watts of Wilmington, Jonathan Johnson of Siler City; mother, Mary Hazel Castevens Johnson of Siler City; sisters, Judy George of Pittsboro, Janice White of Salisbury, Katherine Payne of Sanford; and four grandchildren.
The family received friends Wednesday, (08-26-09) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

RAYMOND WINFRED JOHNSON

Raymond Winfred Johnson, 81, of Siler City died Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 22 at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, Ramseur, with Rev. Russell Chrisco officiating. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City.

Mr. Johnson was a Chatham County native, retired from furniture manufacturing and after retirement, worked part time at Farmers Alliance Store. He attended Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy Deaton Johnson of the home; daughter, Rhonda Phillips and husband David of Goldston; son, Donald Johnson and wife Judy of Asheboro; sister, Joyce Maness of Siler City; granddaughter, Alana Lynthacum and husband, Jamie of Mt. Gilead; great-grandchildren, Haley and Madison Lynthacum of Mt. Gilead.

Memorials may be made to Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church, 17475 US Hwy. 64 W, Siler City, NC 27344.

LESSIE BRIM LONGEST

Lessie Brim Longest 93 of 650 Lane Mill Rd. passed away Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Care View Rest Home in Snow Camp..

Graveside funeral services were held Sunday August 23, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Alamance Memorial Park, Burlington, N.C. with Chaplain Jan Clark officiating.

Mrs. Longest was born in Surry County, N.C. to the late Joe Sam and Louetta Cobbler Brim. Lessie was a lovely, and caring person who made her family a priority…and was an encouragement to everyone she met. She retired from Alamance County Department of Social Services after many years of service. Lessie was an active member of the American Business Women’s Association for over forty years. During that time she held the office of President, various other offices, and was chosen “Woman of the Year” in 1974 and 1985. She was a long time resident of Elon, a member of Elon College Baptist Church, where, among other activities, she was a Sunday School teacher. In earlier years she took pride in singing with her family in a quartet. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband William Earl Burke, her second husband, Giles William Longest, daughter, Glenda Faye Burke, six brothers Paul, Raymond, Deward, Romney, James, and Calvin Brim, and four sisters, Eunice Brim, Nola Brown, Jessie Bolt, and Blanche Taylor.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Mitzi Gasque-Magee and her husband Chuck, great grandson, Brian Gasgue, a great-granddaughter, Jordan Gasgue, step great-grandchildren, Jesica Canelos and Josh Magee, all of Bennett. Also surviving are many special nieces and nephews, a very special care giver, Cathy Hussey, and many special friends. The family wishes to thank the Staff of Care View Rest Home and UNC Hospice for their loving support and special care.

Visitation was held Saturday, August 22, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

NELLIE DIXON JUSTICE

Nellie Dixon Justice, 94, of 1508 East Raleigh Street, Siler City died Sunday, August 23, 2009 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Justice was born May 31, 1915 at Ramseur, the daughter of the late Walter Winslow and the late Dora Reece Dixon. Mrs. Justice was a native of Randolph County, a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church and the owner/operator of Justice Mobile Home Park for 47 years. Nellie enjoyed playing Rook and cooking. She loved her family and was a champion for the underdog. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Everette B. Justice
She is survived by two sons, Mike Justice and wife, Sandy of Siler City, P D Justice and wife, Vicky of Siler City; grandchildren, Leigh-Anne Lancaster and husband, Haze of Raleigh, Jeff Justice and wife, Jennifer of Cary, Brian Justice and wife, Karen of Siler City, Janna Cobia and husband, Jon of Portsmouth, VA; six great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and at other times at the home of P D and Vicky Justice, 1353 Siler City-Glendon Road, Siler City. The funeral will be Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Oakley Baptist Church, 2300 Siler City-Glendon Road, Siler City with Rev. Brian Sandifer officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park.

PATRICK JOSEPH CASEY

Patrick Joseph Casey passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at his home in Pittsboro on July 3, 2009. He was born on Christmas Day, 1924, in Los Angeles, California and attended St. Elizabeth’s Elementary School and Elliott Junior High in Altadena, California.

Mr. Casey served in the US Army in Germany, and traveled extensively in Europe while he was stationed overseas, including trips to Greece, France, and Turkey (twice). He was in the Army Reserve from 1950 to 1963, when he was discharged as a Sergeant First Class. His higher education was a Pasadena City College and the University of Chicago.

After working as a software engineer for ITT in Chicago, he moved to Montclair, NJ and worked primarily in ITT’s New York office, with a six-month stint in Indonesia in 1968. He was then posted to Antwerp, Belgium form 1971 to 1973, working at a division of the company’s European headquarters. During this time he traveled extensively around Europe with his family.

After retiring from ITT in 1980, Mr. Casey worked in a number of computer and software related companies in New Jersey. Upon moving to Pittsboro in 2004, he became active in the local community, including a stint as a VISTA volunteer in the Chatham County emergency preparedness program (CERT). He was also a board member of the Chrysalis Foundation. His hobbies included computers and programming, ham radio (N2FXA), and woodworking.

His wife Marjory passed away in 2005 after 52 years of marriage. He is survived by three daughters, Janet of Pittsboro, Christine of Woodland, California, and Joyce of Portland, Oregon; one son-in-law, Jerry Williams of Portland, Oregon; and two grandsons, Justin and Tristan, both of Portland, Oregon.

The family will be hosting a celebration of Mr. Casey’s life on Sunday, August 30, from 2-4 p.m. at the Gathering Place in Fearrington Village.

JOHN MICHAEL “MIKE” CHEEK

John Michael “Mike” Cheek, 56, of Sanford died Tuesday (08-11-09).

Funeral services were held Friday (08-14-09) at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Pittsboro, with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Cheek was a native of Chatham County, and the son of the late John Robert and Geraldine Clark Cheek. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea, and shipping supervisor at Wal-Mart.

Survivors include his wife, Chon Chong Ok “Cindy” Cheek; brothers, Robert Cheek of Sanford, and Tony Cheek of Southern Pines.

RUBY MAE ALSTON

Mrs. Ruby Mae Alston, 93, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (08-09-09) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday (08-13-09) at Glovers Grove AME Zion Church, Siler City, with Rev. Gloria W. Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Alston was a member of Glover’s Grove Church and worked with Chatham County Schools for ten years.

Survivors include daughters, Virginia Ruth Alston, Catherine Green, Mary Lou Green, Mattie Watson, Viola Green, Irene Brewer, all of Pittsboro; sister, Flossie Martin; brother, Clinton Leak of Pittsboro; 62 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

VIRGINIA CAROLYN FRENCH WATSON

Mrs. Virginia Carolyn French Watson, 66, of Pittsboro died Saturday (08-08-09) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday (08-14-09) at St. Matthews AME Zion Church with Rev. Ronnie Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Watson was a member of St. Matthews AME Zion Church where she was a home mission worker, president deaconess board, a member of the church choir and the usher board.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Louis Watson of the home, children, Cheryl Mc Swain, Frederick; brother, Preston Page; sisters, Johnnie Mae Goldston, Mary Lillie Clark, Deborah Faye Laws; and seven grandchildren.

MATTIE BILAL-WILLIAMS

Mattie Bilal-Williams, 70, of Siler City died Tuesday (08-11-09) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday (08-16-09) at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel, Pittsboro, with Rev. Barry Gray officiating. Burial followed in Evans Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Bilal-Williams operated a day-care center in New Jersey.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene D. Washington of New Jersey; sons, Abdel A. Bilal of Alabama; Frank Williams, Jr. of New Jersey; sister, Arzalia Taylor of Pittsboro; brothers, Arthur Powell of Siler City, Lacy Nettles of Pittsboro; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
