DOROTHY “DOT” SIMPSON
Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Long Simpson, age 74, passed away Saturday 9/12/2009 at Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Posey officiating. Burial followed at Cold Water Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Simpson was born in Cabarrus County, daughter of the late William C. and JoAnn Gillespie Long. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Horace J. “Speck” Simpson and a sister, Frances Long Kimball.
Surviving is her daughter, Sharon S. Smith of Siler City.

DAVID TODD ANDREWS
David Todd Andrews, age 37, of 315 N E 8th Avenue, Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Siler City, died Saturday, September 12, 2009.
He is survived by his wife, Lauren Fox Andrews of the home; father, Terry Andrews and wife, Patsy of Siler City; mother, Carolyn Dark Wood and husband, Tom of Missouri; paternal grandmother, Bessie Anderson Andrews of Siler City; maternal grandparents, Nick and Dean Dark of Siler City; and half-sister, Lauren Lampman of Orlando, FL.
The graveside services will be Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, 175 Moon's Chapel Road, Siler City with Rev. Scott Faw and Rev. Clyde Denny officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 175 Moon's Chapel Road, Siler City, NC 27344.
ELIZABETH CAVINESS PITTMAN
Elizabeth Caviness Pittman, age 93, of 416 West Eight Street, Siler City, died Friday, September 11, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Pittman was born December 18, 1915, the daughter of the late Rev. Cicero and Carrie (Roberts) Caviness.
Mrs. Pittman was a native of Bynum, retired from Collins & Aikman after 40 years of service, and had worked as a waitress and at the nursing home. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and had taught a Sunday school class. Elizabeth was the patriarch of the family who loved cooking, gardening, flower arranging, sewing, crocheting and cake decorating. She loved bowling and the water, especially Carolina Beach. She served as a volunteer for the Chatham Hospital Auxiliary. Elizabeth had lived in many different places, with her father being a Methodist minister. Elizabeth was the most giving person and the best mother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Cicero and Carrie Roberts Caviness, her husband, Leroy Pittman, Sr., numerous brothers and sisters, son-in-law, Richard Johnson and grandson, Ricky Johnson. A special thank you to Tara McLean and Lori Howell, of Liberty Home Care and Hospice.
She is survived by one son, Leroy Pittman, Jr. and wife, Peggy of Gastonia; two daughters, Shirley P. Mosley of Siler City, Pat Pittman of Franklin; one brother, Paul Caviness of Portsmouth, VA; one sister, Ethel C. Monroe of Asheboro; grandchildren, Debbie Paysour of Gastonia, Sandy Day of Charlotte, Elizabeth Overman of Siler City, Brian Stovall of Edenton, Kevin Stovall of Iowa, Jason Stovall of Gillette, WY; Patrick Stovall of Marshall, Jonus Pittman of Franklin; 17 great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, Ava Overman; a grandson, who was loved as a son, Chuck Overman of Siler City; loving friends, Geneva Williams, Beulah Rodgers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Sunday, September, 13, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Monday, September 14, 2009 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny, Rev. Craig Day and Rev. Rodney Hellard officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

EVA THIES CHAMBERS
Mrs. Eva Thies Chambers, 75, of Chapel Hill died in her home Monday (08-31-09).
Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Mrs. Chambers was born in Germany, the daughter of Oscar Richard Wilhelm Thies and Ilse Greilich Thies. She was a homemaker and attended Evergreen United Methodist Church
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lee “H. L.” Chambers.
BETTY DAVIS GWYN
Mrs. Betty Davis Gwyn, 64, of Pittsboro, died Tuesday (09-01-09) in her home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday (09-04-09) at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Interment followed in Goldston United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Gwyn was born in Culpepper, VA, the daughter of Cleveland Eugene and Bertha Waddell Davis. She was retired from Deep River School and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Carbonton.
Survivors include her husband James David “Rabbit” Gwyn; son, Richard Gwyn of Sanford; daughter, Cindy Gordon of Sanford; sister, Sue Mashburn of Carbonton; and six grandchildren.. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, James William Gwyn, II, James David “Snoopy” Gwyn, and a brother, Stevie Smith.
FRAY THOMAS GALES, SR.
Mr. Fray Thomas Gales, Sr., 73, of Liberty died Tuesday, (09-01-09) at his home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, (09-05-09) at 11 a.m. at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James I. Brooks and Rev. Richie Carter, officiating. Burial followed in Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian.
Mr. Gales was the son of the late George Washington and Louise Graves Gales and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie Carter, Nancy Jeffries and brothers, Johnny Gales and Harveston Gales.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Andrews Gales; daughter, Thea Palmer of Siler City; sons, Matthew Gales of Hillsboro, Fray Gales, Jr. of Holly Springs; sisters, Delores Martin, Shelby Jean Jeffries, Josephine Tinnin, Ella Gales, Mamie Outlaw; brothers, Vann Gales, George Gales, Peter Gales; and seven grandchildren.

DR. ROBERTS MOSS REES
Dr. Roberts Moss Rees, 89, died Tuesday (09-01-09) in The Arbor at Galloway Ridge.
A private family gathering to remember Dr. Rees was held Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Hall - Wynne funeral service, Griffin Chapel. At a later date, his cremated remains will be entombed in the family columbarium in Akron, OH.
Dr. Rees was a native of Akron, Ohio, born to Franklin and Eugenia Adams Rees. He was a graduate of Duke University and Temple University. He served in the US Navy in the North Atlantic during World War II. He was a physician who performed pharmaceutical research and development, as well as teaching.
Survivors include his wife, Eugenia; his children, Roberts L. Rees, Gena Douglass; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

JOY CLIFTON GOODWIN
Mrs. Joy Clifton Goodwin, 63, of Apex died Friday (09-04-09) at Wake Medical Center in Cary.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday (09-07-09) at Gum Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Leonard Nix and Rev. Jim Willingham officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Goodwin was a graduate of Campbell University and had worked in banking, most recently in customer service at SunTrust Bank in Raleigh. She was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Goodwin; mother, Mrs. Joy Crews Clifton of Pittsboro; stepson, Steven Goodwin of Clayton; stepdaughter, Leigh Anne Goodwin of Pittsboro; and three step-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Horton Clifton.

JOHN FRANKLIN BROWN, JR
Mr. John Franklin Brown, Jr., 48, or Goldston died Tuesday (09-01-09) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (09-04-09) at Roberts Chapel Church with Rev. Dr. Sampson Buie, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Brown was a member of Roberts Chapel Church and Goldston Star Lodge #688. He worked at UNC Hospital for 15 years.
Survivors include daughters, Candace Nichole Brown, Laci Goldea Brown; and sisters, Goldia Marlynette Brown, and Golina Joelle Brown, both of Atlanta, GA.
ROBERT M. “BOB’ MATTHEWS
Robert M. “Bob” Matthews, Jr., age 92, of Southern Pines died, September 2, 2009.
Mr. Matthews, former vice president of Chadbourn Gotham, Inc., Charlotte, was director of Research and Development for Kellwood Co., Inc, Siler City, and plant manager of the Kellwood plant in Twin Falls, Idaho. He was recognized in the hosiery industry for over 50 years of service with 25 patents on new products and machinery, and was co-inventor of sheer stretch hosiery.
He served as Master Sergeant with 151 combat engineers in World War II in Europe.
He was a former charter member of Eastway Christian Church in Charlotte, where he served as trustee of the church. Later he became a member of Antioch Christian Church in Chatham County.
Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife, Lee Hart Matthews of Southern Pines; one son, Robert M. Matthews III and wife, Claudia of Lawrenceville, GA; his grandson, Robert B. Matthews and wife, Crystal and great-granddaughter, Hannah of Gastonia; and his granddaughter, Christy M. Martin and husband, Pete Martin of Clover, SC.
The funeral was held Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church, 246 Antioch Christian Church Road, Bear Creek, N.C. 27207 with Rev. Jack Phillips, Rev. Mike Harper, Rev. Clark Davis, and Rev. Ray Holland officiating. The family received friends in the Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Antioch Christian Church.

BARBARA PERRY REEVES
Barbara Perry Reeves, 75, of 104 White Oak Drive, Siler City died Friday, September 4, 2009 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Reeves was born September 18, 1933 in Charlotte, the daughter of Earl Daniel and Dora Wilson Perry. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, a homemaker and retired clerical worker with A. J. Schneierson and Townsends, Inc. In later years, she worked part time with Dr. Keith McManus. Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City where she was a member of the choir, WMU, a Sunday School teacher and worked with youth activities. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Earle Reeves.
She is survived by two sons, David Mark Reeves and wife, Paula of Siler City, Todd Brandon Reeves and Avery Ward and Payten of Siler City; grandson, Caleb Reeves; sister-in-law, Beatrice Threatt of Lancaster, SC; special friends, Dr. Keith and Deb McManus, Jo Nall, Elsie Scotton, Amber Fields, Jamie Clark, Cindy Kelly, Betty Johnson, Ruth Andrew and Randall Buckner.
The family received friends Sunday, September 6, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Avenue, Siler City, and at other times at the home of David and Paula Reeves, 321 East Raleigh Street, Siler City. The funeral was held Monday, September 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial followed in Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte on Monday at 4 p.m.
