MOORESBORO — Mrs. Kathleen Camp Peeler, 91, of 2453 McCraw Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Gaffney, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Raymond Oscar Camp and Lillian Delora Arnold Camp. She was a homemaker and member of Lavonia Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Antaphy Ivey. She is survived by four sons, Buddy Roger Peeler and wife, Mollie, and Clarence Edward Peeler and wife, Janice, all of Mooresboro, Bobby Joel Peeler and wife, Nancy, of Gaffney and Don Marshall Peeler and wife, JoAnn, of Ellenboro; three daughters, Vivian Safarah Orr and husband, Walter Herbert Orr of Gaffney, Shelba Jean Lovelace of Mooresboro and Brenda Joyce McSwain and husband, Leonard, of Shelby; a son-in-law, Charles Ivey of Gaffney; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Lavonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Buddy Morehead and Jack Pennington officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are her grandsons and honorary pallbearers are Garrison McCraw and Greg Cooper. FOREST CITY — Mr. Joseph C. “Joe” Gosey, 66, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Fair Haven Home in Bostic. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Goodes Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Cecil Lovelace and Wade Huntley officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. ‘Les’ Knight
MT. HOLLY — Mr. Leslie “Les” Dwaine Knight, 46, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at home. He was born on Nov. 27, 1955, in Charlotte, the son of Gertha Little Knight and the late William “Bill” Knight of Charlotte. Les was an avid auto racing fan and golfer, and loved spending his spare time restoring antique cars. He served in the Army, where he was a communication specialist. Les began his career in the machine tool industry by first working in machine shops. In 1985, he was hired by J&H Machine Tools as product specialist and later promoted to product manger. In 1999, he joined Mitutoyo America Corp as metrology engineer and later was employed by Dominion Air and Machinery Co., as machine tool sales engineer. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Bonita Lowe of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Dana and Terri Knight of Matthews; two sisters, Roberta Tomlin of Linwood and Veda Harlow of Charlotte; nephews and nieces, Bryan Knight of Wallace, S.C., Alana Denton of Linwood and Shelby Wilder of Salisbury. In addition, Les leaves behind an extended family of beloved friends. He will also be missed by his two cocker spaniels, Rocky and Buffy. The family of Les Knight wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Geoffrey Chapman, Oncologist, as well as the many friends and neighbors who have given freely of their time. The family will receive friends Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. at Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Les Knight will follow at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be private. MOORESBORO — Mr. Vernon Anthony Deaton, 66, of 425 Trinity Church Road, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Cleveland County, a son of the late Howard Vess and Inez Greene Deaton. He was owner and operator of Deaton Concession’s and member of New Buffalo Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Earnest, Howard and Tommy Deaton. He is survived by his wife, Carol Gibson Deaton of the home; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Vick and Sarah Deaton and Donald Deaton, all of Mooresboro; and two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Earl Padgett of Cliffside and Janie and Bill Buff of Shelby. FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. — Mrs. Carol W. Ball, 63, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in Overland Park, Kan. A former teacher, Mrs. Ball was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Shelby. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Martha Ball, and her grandsons, Andrew, Jack and Daniel Ball, all of Overland Park; her sister, Jane Best, and nephews, Tommy Best and Michael Best, all of Goldsboro; and many dear friends and relatives. BOSTIC — Mrs. Ellen Smith Murray, 83, of 1001 DePriest Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. Born Oct. 5, 1918, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Amos Kelley and Julie Ann Watts Smith. She was a homemaker and member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and attended Mountain View Baptist Church of Bostic. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Charlie E. Murray; two brothers, Joe and Beecher Smith; and a granddaughter, Julie Goforth. She is survived by two sons, Richard Murray and wife, Carolyn, and Norris E. Murray and his fiancée, Mary Black, all of Bostic; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Malena and Carl Tate and Elaine and Arnold Hubbard, all of Bostic, and Freida and Johnny Goforth of Forest City; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Dorothy Edwards Zanon, 83, former resident of Rutherfordton, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Billings, Mont., she was a daughter of the late William Harrison and Florence Wykle Edwards. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, the Mothers Sunday School Class and a retired missionary with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. John Zanon. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth and the Rev. Keith Dixon of Boiling Springs; two grandchildren, Jeremy Dixon and Jacob Dixon; four brothers, Vaughn Edwards of Rutherfordton, John Edwards of Melbourne, Fla., Troy Edwards of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Paul Edwards of Charlotte; and a sister, Josephine Brabble of Mount Holly. SHELBY — Mrs. Susan “Fan” Fannie Gertrude Bost Brooks, 85, of 804 Charles Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She graduated from Startown High School in 1933 and Women’s College of North Carolina in 1937. She taught at Mills Home Orphanage and was a teacher one year for Elizabeth City Public Schools. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and in church classes and groups in North Carolina and Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Palmer Brooks; her father, Thomas Garlen Bost; and her mother, Della Cansler Bost. She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Susan and James Pike of Chapel Hill, Jane and Jeff Sanders of Aurora, Colo., and Rebekah Brooks and Polly Brooks, both of Shelby; a sister, Edith Jenkins; five brothers, Wayne, Donald, Vann, Floyd and Benne Bost; three grandsons and a spouse, Ben and Marsha Pike, Andrew Pike and James Sanders; three great-grandsons, (triplets), Tyler, Logan and Ryan Pike; five sisters-in-law, Edith Hoffman, Clara Lowe, Margaret Brooks, Gladys Boroughs and husband, Lewis, and Reba Tapy and husband, George; and two brothers-in-law and spouses, Dennis and Jo Brooks and C.J. and Joan Brooks. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Burial will be private. Donald Ivey
CASAR — Mr. Donald Wayne Ivey, 62, of 205 Moriah School Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at VA Medical Center of Asheville. Born Feb. 22, 1940, in Ajo, Ariz., he was a son of the late John Ivey Jr. and Fontella Lee Smales. He retired from the Navy as a gunner’s mate and served during Vietnam. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Ann Ivey. He is survived by two sons, Thomas Wayne Ivey of Mobile, Ala., and Dennis Wayne Ivey of Vancover, Wash.; a daughter, Donna Lynn Sharpe of San Antonio, Texas; six brothers, Leroy Bush of Oregon, Delbert Bush of Keego Harbor, Mich., William Bush of Casar, Joseph Smales of Livonia, Mich., John Ivey and Eric Ivey, both of Arizona; three sisters, Sharon Alhomsi of Westland, Mich., Francis Doud of Inkster, Mich., and Jennifer Kokenos of Livonia, Mich.; and seven grandchildren. James Beam
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. James Robert Beam, 71, of 408 N. Mountain St., died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby, after an extended illness. He was born in Lincoln County on Oct. 25, 1930, the son of the late J. Webb and Eva Howell Beam. A district sales manager for Carolina Freight Carriers, Cherryville, he retired in 1991 after 39 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church, deacon, Sunday school teacher and a member of the Building Committee of the present church building. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Beam Beam of the home; a son, J. Norris Beam of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald S. and Frankie Beam of Cherryville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joyce and D.C. Beam of Fallston and Jane B. Helms of Cherryville; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Cherryville, with Dr. Vince Hefner and the Rev. Perry Holliman officiating. SHELBY — Mrs. Edna Carter Bishop, 76, of 1204 Patterson St., died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Rutherford County, she was born April 22, 2002, the daughter of the late Oscar Carter and Ellen McCurry. She was a spinner at Ora Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bishop; four brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Betty Bishop of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Boyd Bostic of Gastonia; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Paul Plato Short, 89, of 812 Third St., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. He was a native of Cleveland County and son of the late Joe Baxter and Hulda Morrison Short, also preceded in death by sons, Ray Short and Jerry J. Short. He was a supervisor in the textile industry and a member of East Gold Street Wesleyan Church in Kings Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Biddix Short of Kings Mountain; two sons, Donald Short and wife, Dorothy, of Shelby and Kenneth Short of Bessemer City; a stepson, Mike Rippy and wife, Sherry, of Grover; a daughter, Sandra Wright and husband, Steve, of Grover; a stepdaughter, Barbara Deese and husband, Warren, of Kings Mountain; a sister, Novella Foster of Kings Mountain; 12 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at East Gold Street Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Eddie Gray and LeRoy Cox officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
