FOREST CITY — Mrs. Myrtle Olema Morrow Howard, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Henderson Care Center. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Padgett and King Mortuary with the Rev. Wayne Toney officiating. Burial will be in Cool Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Dane and Darlene Wilson on Hines Road in the Hicks Grove Community.

GASTONIA — Mrs. Agnes Barnes Baker, 79, of 1542 Crowders Woods Drive, formerly of North 12th Street, Bessemer City, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at home. Born in York County, S.C., on Aug. 29, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Samuel H. and Mary Brandon Barnes. She was a homemaker and a member of Sunset Lane Baptist Church, where she was active in the Senior Citizens Ceramic Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Baker; a granddaughter, Kristen Camp; a sister, Christine Nivens; and a brother-in-law, Carl Nivens. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debra and Banyu Mcmillan of Gastonia, Patricia Camp of Iron Station and Evelyn and Hugh Huffman of Earl; a son and daughter-in-law, Neil Jr. and Nancy Baker of Columbus; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Peggy Barnes of Flat Rock; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Edna Ward. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Sunset Lane Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bob Grigg and Tom Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Westview Gardens. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall one hour before the service, and at other times at home. Memorials may be made to Sunset Lane Baptist Church, 1001 N. 12th St., Bessemer City, NC 28016. Sisk-Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Hawes
FALLSTON — Mrs. Betty Jean Willis Hawes, 68, of 110 Ross Drive, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born June 14, 1934, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Pate Willis and Dollie Poole Willis. She retired from Stamey Stores as a seamstress and was a member of Plains View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Franklin Hawes; a son, Henry Hawes; two brothers, Ralph Willis and Blake Willis; and two sisters, Aileen Poole and Dean Willis. She is survived by two sons, David Hawes and Ronnie Hawes, both of Fallston; a daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Michael Dixon of Fallston; two brothers, Bill Willis of Fallston and Horace Willis of Boiling Springs; and four grandchildren, Ashley Hawes, Nathan Pearson, Evan Dixon and Ethan Dixon. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Plains View Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Ewing officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church fellowship hall. ELLENBORO — Mr. Edgar Ervin Walker, 94, of 1219 Tiney Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Autumn Care. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Crowe Funeral Home with the Revs. Elwood Orr and Ad Hopper officiating. Burial will be in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Thomas Mathis, 76, of 1241 S. Lafayette St., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002. She was a homemaker and a member of Shelby New Bethel Church of the Nazarene. She was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Jolly Elders. Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Mathis; her mother, Lydia Oakes Thomas; and her father, Frank Thomas. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lydia Jane Mathis and Voyd Hayes of Kings Mountain; daughters, Frankie Mathis Philbeck of Fallston, Essie Lee Mathis Lovelace of Shelby; brothers, Gordon Thomas and John Thomas of Hickory; sisters, Frankie Mae Thomas and Beulah Thomas Griffin of Lincolnton, and Lola Virginia Thomas Bailes of Hickory; grandchildren, Brenda Elizabeth Elliott and Thomas Richard Elliott Jr. of Kings Mountain, Gary Michael Elliott of San Leon, Texas, Carol Philbeck Dover of Fallston, and Jerry Floyd Lovelace, Ricky Lee Lovelace, T.J. Lovelace and Tonya Faye Lovelace, all of Shelby. The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Shelby New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Andress and Jones officiating. J.R. Campbell
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. J.R. Campbell, 79, of 1008 Trey St., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at home. Born in Lincoln County on June 27, 1923, he was a son of the late Winfield Scott and Mary Fredell Campbell. A warehouse foreman with Carolina Freight Carriers for 21 years, he retired as a security guard with Guardmark of Charlotte. He served in the Army during World War II, belonged to First Baptist Church of Cherryville and was a member of Woodmen of the World Lodge 579, Cherryville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Annie Campbell and two brothers, William W. Campbell and W. Scott Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Vergie Hannon Campbell of the home; his mother-in-law, Vera Neill Hannon of Cherryville; a son and his wife, J. Rick Jr. and Beverly Campbell of Cherryville; three daughters and their husbands, Joan and Earle Gaulden of Greenville, S.C., Marilyn Temples and Rich Adams of Clemmons and Christine and John McCall, all of Cherryville; two brothers, John E. Campbell of Cherryville and Emanuel Campbell of Shelby; six sisters, Wilma Davidson, Frances Hord and Pinkie Sanders of Cherryville, Sue Sneed and Catherine Mull of Waco and Louise Adams of Bessemer City; six grandchildren, Rich Campbell, Ali Beale, Trey McCall, Dean Lake, Hunt Gaulden and Margaret Gaulden; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Gaulden. A graveside funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at City Memorial Cemetery, with Dr. Vince Hefner and the Rev. Perry Holliman officiating. LAWNDALE — Mr. Paul Read Costner, 78, of 304 Kadesh Church Road, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jackie Price officiating. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Avery Williams
SHELBY — Mr. Avery N. Williams, 71, of 416 Flacon Circle, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was born Aug. 22, 1931. He was a son of the late Charles Williams and Edna Blanton. He was a supervisor for Cone Mills Co., and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a good father and friend to all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Williams. He is survived by his wife, Ellwane Herron Williams; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bynum “Butch” and Marie Williams, of Shelby, and Charles S. and Janet Williams, of Ellenboro; a daughter, Ava Lee Parsons, of Hudson; three stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Ronnie and Tracy Ramey, of Gastonia, Edwin and Diane Malcolm, of Blacksburg, S.C., and Ashley and Yvonne Malcolm, of York, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Patricia Malcolm, of Kings Mountain; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Lamar Hewitt officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

SHELBY — Mrs. Betty Norman Eskridge, 76, of 702 Westover Terrace, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John Wray and Clara Beam Norman. A homemaker, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church, serving on the Alter Guild, a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Wray Norman Jr.; and a sister, Deanie Weaver. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clyde C. Eskridge Jr., of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Clyde Eskridge III and Linda, of Morganton; a daughter and son-in-law, Betsy Eskridge Batchelor and Scott, of Raleigh; a brother and sister-in-law, Ben Norman and Theresa, of Gray Court, S.C.; one surviving brother-in-law, Bob Eskridge and wife, Jeanne, of Shelby; four sisters, Sara Norman and Peggy Norman, both of Shelby, Louise Burch, of Forest City, and Carol Jenkins and husband, R.B., of Gastonia; one surviving sister-in-law, Mary Frances Elliott and husband, Harry, of Shelby; five grandchildren, Sarah Batchelor and Scott Batchelor Jr., both of Chapel Hill, and Katherine, Anne and John Eskridge, all of Morganton. CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Samuel Quinton Burnett Sr., 79, of 322 Pine Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at his son’s residence in Arden. A graveside service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at City Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Leonard L. Bumgardner officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the World War II Last Man Club. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Ida Mae Tignor, 89, of 106 E. Kings St., died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Wonie Wood McBee, and widow of John Patton “Pat” Tignor. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Circle No. 3 of Central United Methodist Church, Lake Montonia Club and taught beginning and advanced sewing and tailoring classes at Cleveland Community College for many years. She was also a homemaker. She is survived by her foster daughter, Doris Gorman of Atlanta; a sister, Gladys Bridges of Kings Mountain; niece, Anne Sanders of Gaffney, S.C.; a brother-in-law, Gene Tignor, Kings Mountain; and dear friends, Charles and Betty Fite of Kings Mountain, LeCompte “Tootie” Hill of Raleigh, Karl Hill of New Mexico and Lee Bryan of Sasser, Ga. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Janice Combs officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. James Hunt
SHELBY — Mr. James Lee Hunt, 82, of 3020 Hazel Drive, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late J. Edgar and Leona Hunt Hunt. He was a graduate of Casar High School and a retired truck driver. He was a member of Polkville Baptist Church. A veteran of the Army Air Corps, he served in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, France and Germany. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Moneta Price Hunt; and a sister, Beulah H. White. He is survived by a brother, Hoyt Hunt of Hickory; a sister, Marie Hunt Gold of Shelby; a nephew and his wife, Shannon and Ruby White of Polkville; five nieces, Christine Martin and her husband, Rick, Burnette Whitaker and her husband, David, and Linda Allen, all of Shelby; Shirley Kolb of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Joyce Knight of Hickory. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Polkville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Alton Martin and Rick Hamrick officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home of Shannon and Ruby White, 122 Withrow Drive, Polkville. Marie Wilson
SHELBY — Mrs. Marie Hudson Wilson, 88, of 2003 Kings Road, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Fort Mill, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Avery and Emma Dominey Hudson. She was a retired sewing supervisor after 28 years with Universal Manufacturing in Shelby. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Keenagers Choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Howard Frank Wilson; a daughter, Emma Jo Randall and her husband, Bill; two brothers, Palmer and Gene Hudson; and a younger childhood sister. She is survived by a son, James Howard Wilson and wife, Martha, of Pawley’s Island, S.C.; a daughter, Phyllis Bridges, of Asheville; two sisters, Elma Hammond and husband, Charles, and Margaret Deaton and husband, Glenn, all of Shelby; five grandchildren, Amanda Randall Lowery and husband, Tommy, Steve Randall and wife, Frances, and Mark Bridges and wife, Kathy, all of Shelby, Pam Bridges and husband, Danny, of Asheville, and Tim Wilson and wife, Kathy, of Wilmington; nine great-grandchildren, Josh and Jenny Lowery, Erin and John Wilson, Jaime, Nicole, Meghan and Christian Bridges, and Joey Randall. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
