William “Dudie” Wright
SHELBY — Mr. William “Dudie” Wright, 64, of 415 Circle Dr., departed this life Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Integrated Healthcare of Charlotte. A native of Cleveland County he was born June 4, 1938, the son of late Theodoro and Addie Surratt Wright. He worked as a truck driver for many years. He is survived by three sons; a daughter; two sisters, Carolyn Wright and Ollie Merriweather both of Shelby; two brothers, Wray and John Wright also of Shelby; a host of nieces and nephews and a special friend Carolyn Griffin. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Genesis Chapel with the Rev. Wade Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the chapel and other times at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Jay and Edna Wright of 336 Grice Street in Shelby.

Bryan Griffin
SPINDALE — Mr. Bryan Thomas Griffin, 35, of 1060 Old Ballpark Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

‘Bill’ Padgett
ELLENBORO — Mr. William Franklin “Bill” Padgett, 67, of 1574 Walls Church Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Rutherford County and a son of the late Grover and Avis Bridges Padgett. He attended Corinth Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher. He also served in the Army, was a Master Mason and member of Hollis Masonic Lodge and Woodman of The World, Ellenboro Camp. Mr. Padgett retired after 27 years as a teacher at Crest High School in Cleveland County. Survivors include his wife, Jewell Bridges Padgett of the home; a daughter, Tammy P. Campbell of Ellenboro; a brother, Jennings Padgett of Bostic; one grandson, Brandon Campbell; and a godgreat-grandchild, Anna Sims. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Revs. Elwood Orr and Ad Hopper officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 9 at Padgett and King Mortuary, Forest City. Memorials may be made to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, 767 Pinehurst Road, Ellenboro, NC 28040.

Sue Gantt
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Sue Heavner Gantt, 72, of 442 Paul H. Beam Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 19, 1929, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Ethan and Sally Jenks Heavner, and wife of the late Howard “Poker” Gantt. She was former owner of P.G. Fish Camp and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cherryville. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Gantt; and three brothers, Wayne, Yates and Marvin Heavner. She is survived by two sons, Ronnie Gantt and wife, Jackie Jo, and June Gantt and wife, Bobbie Jean, all of Cherryville; a daughter, Sandy G. Crawley of Cherryville; a brother, Fay Heavner of Lincolnton; a sister, Edna Leonard of Lincolnton; nine grandchildren, Dana Gantt, Jeff Gantt, Treva Martin, Kevin Gantt, Brent Gantt, Heidi Freeman, Shane Crawley, Brian Gantt and Clay Crawley; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Dr. Billy Lowe and the Rev. Jack Cooke officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, 107 W. Academy St., Cherryville, NC 28021.

FAYETTEVILLE — Ms. Eula Hill, 96, of 401 Dunmore Road and formerly of Cleveland County, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Dockery’s Funeral Home.

Bobby Hayes
SHELBY — Mr. Bobby McKinley Hayes, 70, of 312 N. Morgan St., died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at home. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Marcellus McKinley and Thelma Leary Hayes. He retired after 30 years of service with the State of North Carolina Division of Environmental Health and Natural Resources as a rating officer in the Milk Division for 52 counties. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Frank Bridges Sunday School Class and worked on several committees. He worked on several committees in the Kings Mountain Baptist Association and graduated from Shelby High School in 1951. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by a brother, James L. Hayes and wife, Marjorie, of Shelby; two sisters, Rosemary H. Perkins and husband, Gene, of Greenville, S.C., and Marlin H. Ensley and husband, Jimmie, of Concord; and six nephews. The funeral will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Revs. Jimmy Black, David Rabb, Dan Wallace and Larry Franks officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are members of Frank Bridges Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends two hours before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of James and Marjorie Hayes, 1580 Timberlake Drive, Shelby. KANNAPOLIS — Mrs. Mabel Marie Munday Allen, 91, formerly of East 11th Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the Best of Care Rest Home. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at North Kannapolis Baptist Church with the Revs. David Myers and Coy Privette officiating. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Lady’s Funeral Home and at other times at the home of a son, Joe R. Allen, 4670 N.C. 152 W., China Grove. Peggy Dixon
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Peggy E. Hartman Dixon, 66, of 149 Countryside Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Cleveland County and daughter of the late Margaret Latham Hartman. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Will and Sallie Dellinger Latham. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church in Kings Mountain, where she was a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school secretary and also taught Bible school for a number of years. She graduated valedictorian from Bethware High School in 1954. She was the secretary for Clyde E. Dixon Construction Co., Inc., Kings Mountain. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Clyde Dixon of Kings Mountain; three sons, Wayne E. Dixon and wife, Regina, Darryl Dixon and wife, Carol, and W. Eric Dixon and wife, Betsy G., all of Kings Mountain; parents, James Loyd and Mary Ocie Newton Hartman of Cherryville; four brothers, Bob Hartman and Glenn Hartman, both of Shelby, Bill Hartman of Fallston and Steve Hartman of Cherryville; three sisters, Jean Whitesides and Mary Hartman, both of Cherryville, and Juanita Lemberger of Grover; and five grandchildren, Joy Dixon, Derek Dixon, Jonathan Dixon, Wesley Dixon and Adam Dixon, all of Kings Mountain. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Don Williams and J.W. Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, 505 N. Frances Morris
CHARLOTTE — Miss Frances Diane Morris, 24, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002. Precious memories remain with those she loved, her daughter, Janae’ Simone Morris; mother, Elizabeth M. Burton; stepfather, Gregory Burton; father, the Rev. Franklin Huskey; brothers, Terry Morris and Tellisavalas Dondrake Morris, who preceded her in death; grandmother, Mary Ann Moore; and a great-aunt, Maggie Washburn. The funeral will be Friday at Old Ellis Chapel Baptist Church, Patterson Springs. Quiet hour at 2 p.m. with services beginning at 3 p.m. at the church with the Rev. W.D. Ellis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will meet at 1524 Longleaf Drive, Charlotte, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday to leave for the service. Family and friends in Shelby will meet at Mrs. Maggie Washburn’s home, 385 Pryer St. Withrow Funeral Home of Kings Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Pillar of Truth Ministries with pastors Jimmy Painter and Kevin Kellough and evangelist Jimmy Burnette officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. IRON STATION — Mrs. Mattie Thomas Vinson, 90, of 3830 Oakwood Circle, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

Vernie Freeman
SHELBY — Mrs. Vernie Allison Freeman, 83, of 911 Lake Drive, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born March 15, 1919, in Mooresboro, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Orange Logan Allison. She married E.H. Freeman, who preceded her in death, on Nov. 26, 1942. To this union was born a daughter, Brenda, who preceded them to eternity after birth. Vernie joined Young’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Mooresboro at an early age and she remained and served as a loyal and faithful member until her death. She served as a chairperson of the trustees, building fund, finance and budget committees, president of the Lay Council, chairperson of the Beautification Committee and she was active in many other community activities. She graduated from Cleveland High School in Shelby and Paine College in Augusta, Ga. She continued her education with studies at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro and Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. After teaching for 34 years for the Cleveland County School Systems, she retired. She was a member of the NCH, NEA Retired Teachers of North Carolina and the State Athletic Association of Coaches and Referees. She did civic work in conjunction with other worthy organizations in the county. She was a wonderful wife and relative and will be greatly missed. She leaves to cherish her memory three very special cousins, Iris Koonce of Greensboro, Carolyn Gardner of Fayetteville and Arlyss Wiggins of Chevy Chase, Md.; and a godchild, Tauri Morrow of Chapel Hill; and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Young’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Mooresboro. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Dockery’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Janois Beam
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Janois “Jo” Norman Beam, 67, of 408B N. Elm St., died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at her home. Born June 6, 1935, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of Ora Lee Cook Norman of Shelby and the late Archie Matthew Norman. She retired from Maiden Clinic as lab x-ray technician after 20 years of service. She was a member of Mary’s Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the choir. Mrs. Beam was a former Sunday School teacher and church pianist. She was a graduate of Belwood High School and Dell Medical School of Technology. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Norman. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 46 years, Donald Everett Beam Sr. of Cherryville; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald E. Jr. and Rita Beam of Cherryville; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Sherry and Leonard Rogers of Salem, S.C., Sandy and Dick Mitchem of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and Amy and Chris Goodman of Cherryville; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Jerald and Andrea Norman of Casar and Marie Norman of Lawndale; a sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Ray Stockton of Conway, S.C.; her mother-in-law, Rosemary Gardner and her husband, Max, of Shelby; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home with the Revs. Ron Lytle and Cecil Buff officiating. Burial will be in City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150; or to Mary’s Grove United Methodist Church, 1223 Mary’s Grove Church Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.
