ELLENBORO — Mr. Jessie Ben Logan, 66, of 239 Hamrick Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Autumn Care of Forest City. SHELBY — Mr. Perry D. “Don” Rollins, 52, of 1022 Cumberland Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of Sara Wright Rollins of Cliffside and the late W.D. “Bill” Rollins. He retired as a school teacher and was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jan Biggerstaff Rollins of Shelby; and two daughters, Hope Rollins of Forest City and Kim Rollins of Cary. SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Scism Hyder, 57, of 1585 Maysville Road, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born in Cleveland County Aug. 12, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Forrest Everette Scism Sr. and Beatrice Chapman Scism. She had worked for Doran Textiles, Blackwelders Textiles and Shelby Elastic. She belonged to Wallace Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Mack O’Neal Hyder of Shelby; a son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Julie Hyder of Cherryville; a daughter and son-in-law, Cammy and Blaine Richard of Shelby; two brothers, Everette Scism Jr. of Polkville and Johnny Scism of Shelby; a sister, Brodia Sarratt of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Bradley Richard, Nathaniel Richard and Zachary Hyder. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel in Fallston, with the Revs. Lero Hudson and Barry Goodman officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. WADESBORO — Miss Sarah Jane Davis, 74, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Miss Davis was born in the Poplar Springs Community of Cleveland County, Oct. 21, 1927. She was a daughter of the late Noah Newton and Moddie Webber Davis. She was a member of The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution for 45 years, and locally belonged to the Thomas Wade-Craighead Chapter. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She moved to Anson County in 1954 to teach math at Lilesville School, after graduating form the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She retired after teaching in the Anson County School System for more than 30 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Ann Davis Brendle; and a very special aunt, Cecil Cecilia Davis. She is survived by her good friend, Billy Britt of Wadesboro, and several cousins. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Fred Senter officiating. Burial will be in Anson Memorial Park. GASTONIA — Mr. Mickey Dean Hope, 46, of Betty Street, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, he worked in the plumbing trade and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his mother, Betty B. Jenkins Hope of Gastonia; a brother and his wife, Johnny Ray and Nina Hope of Shelby; two sisters and their husbands, Racena and Timothy McConnell of Ladson, S.C., and Tammy and Terry Alexander of Summerville, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark Canipe officiating. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. George Henry Houser, 87, of 104 E. Ridge St., died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, he was the third child of the late Horace Mayo and Sarah Evangeline Falls Houser. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, where he was a former choir and church council member. He served as past president of Kings Mountain Lions Club and Kings Mountain Country Club. He was very active in his community and in 1973 led a successful campaign for a new addition to Kings Mountain Hospital. He spent most of his life with Sadie Mills Inc., where he served as secretary and past president. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, George Andrew Hudson; brothers, William “Bill” Houser and Douglas Houser; and sisters, Frances Houser Lutz and Linda Houser Blanton. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Laura Mauney Houser; two daughters and their husbands, Shirley Houser Bimrose and Fred of Kings Mountain and Beth Houser McIntyre and Lee of Gastonia; a sister, Lois Evangeline Houser of Clemson, S.C.; grandchildren, Laura Hudson Johnson and her husband, Sam, of Jamestown, Betsy McIntyre Hurst and her husband, Brad, of Gastonia and Lee “Trey” McIntyre III of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Hayes and Sarah Katherine Hayes of Jamestown and Lauralee Elizabeth Hurst of Gastonia. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. MORGANTON — Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Morehead, 72, of 2960 Frank Whisnant Road, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Britthaven of Morganton. Born in Cleveland County May 13, 1930, she was a daughter of the late David and Eliza Caswell Hamrick. She retired as an assembler for Specialty Lighting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin H. Morehead; two brothers, Jim Hamrick and Ben Hamrick; and two sisters, Vessie Hoppes and Ruth Barnette. She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Morehead of Morganton, Ivy Morehead of Shelby and Mike Morehead of Burnsville; three brothers, Archie Hamrick and Johnnie Hamrick of Shelby and Dewey Hamrick of Cherryville; three sisters, Eva Champion and Cathrine Oliver of Shelby and Martha Greene of Boiling Springs; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. GROVER — Mr. Cecil Wilson, 80, of 105 Andrews Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Madison County, he was a son of the late Jerry and Addie Carver Wilson. He retired from the textile industry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Dale Wilson; and three brothers, Carl Wilson, Luther Wilson and Clyde Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Edith Hart Wilson of Grover; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth Wilson Haskins and her husband, Andy, and Darlene Wilson Clark and her husband, Steve, all of Grover; a sister, Zetta Wilson Burrell of Weaverville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Born July 25, 1925, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Cleveland and Elizabeth Rose Monnie Wall Fortenberry. She retired as an inspector from Cleveland Mills. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lawndale. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Glenn; and two brothers, Charles Fortenberry and Harvey Fortenberry. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Wray V. Glenn, of Lawndale; a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Judy Glenn of Polkville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ravonda and Larry Wyatt of Polkville and Donna and David Thomas of Cherryville; four grandsons, Marc Glenn, Joseph Glenn, Andy Thomas and Jeff Wyatt; and one granddaughter, Jenna Wyatt. He was a native of Stanley County, born Oct. 24, 1957, the son of Wayborn L. and Jean Rector Mitchell of Shelby. He was a graduate of Burns High School in 1976, attended Gardner-Webb College and was a graduate of Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2001, and was an assistant chaplain with Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Bessie Rector of Sparta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronnie and Priscilla Mitchell of Cherryville and David R. and Debbie B. Mitchell of Shelby; three nephews, Christopher Mitchell, B.J. Philbeck and Simon Philbeck; and special aunts and uncles, J.D. and Raycene Hatcher of High Point, Arnold and Opal Mitchell of Statesville, Cam and Ann Osborne and Arlene and Tommy Hamm of Virginia and Ruth and Colonel Brown, Clifton and Shirley Rector, Raymond and Elaine Rector and Mary and Terry Kennedy, all of Sparta. MOORESBORO — Mr. Richard Williams “Butch” Harris Sr., 62, of Cliffside Road, Mooresboro, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center after an illness of 14 years. He was a native of Rutherfod County and was the son of the late John Roland Harris and Ruby Gosey Harris. He was a former teacher, coach and principal in Cleveland County Schools. He was a football official for North State for 20 years. He was a graduate of Cliffside High School, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Appalachian State University and EDS degree from Western Carolina University. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Harris. He is survived by his wife, Barbara H. Harris, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard Jr. and Allison Harris of Cliffside; two daughters and sons-in-law, Crystal and Jeff Bridges and Lisa and George Randlett, all of Forest City; six grandchildren, Ryan Harris, Kaitlin Harris, Emily Adkins, Bonnie Bridges, Allie Bridges, Geordy Randlett; mother-in-law, Katie Harris of Cliffside; brothers-in-law, Jerry Harris of Shelby, Billy Harris and wife, Robin, of Waco and Bill Putnam of Cliffside; sister-in-law, Peggy Barnes of Cliffside; and a host of nieces and nephews.
