SFC ROBERT FRANCIS OTIS
U.S. Army, Retired

SFC Robert Francis Otis, 71, of Sanford died Wednesday, (09-22-2010) at his home.

funeral service was held Saturday, (09-25-2010), at 11 a.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Sanford with Rev. Tim Murr officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the United States Army followed at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford.

Born April 6, 1939 to the late Donald V. Otis and Cassie McEarchern Otis, Mr. Otis was a U. S. Army veteran and retired from the United States Army. Being a member of the Special Forces, he served in Vietnam and received many awards. He was formerly employed by General Shale and Brick and owned and operated Otis Horseshoeing.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Otis; son, Robert Charles Otis of Sanford; daughters, Christine Elizabeth Williams of Wake Forest, Patricia Michelle Otis, Amy Marie Goodnoe, Jennifer Dunnigan, all of Sanford; brothers, Reggie Otis of Blaine, ME, Ronnie Otis of Medway, ME, Donnie Otis, Fred Otis, both of Portland, ME; sisters, Anne Gordon of Anson, ME, Jean Lee of Medway, ME, Shirley Baker of Portland ME; and ten grandchildren, In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tracy Dunigan, two brothers and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Liberty Home Care and Hospice, 1005 Carthage St., Sanford, NC 27330; or to Carolina Animal Rescue and Adoption, 42 Deep River Rd., Sanford, NC 27330.

MS. RUBY EVELYN MARSH

Ruby Evelyn Marsh, a native of Siler City died Wednesday (09-15-2010) at her home.

The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall on Saturday, (09-18-2010).

The daughter of the late Augustus Marsh and Hattie Sutton Marsh, Ms. Marsh graduated from high school in Siler City and continued her education at Shaw University where she received a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics. She later matriculated at NYU in New York City and received a Master of Arts Degree in Guidance and Counseling. After several years, she returned to Siler City and Jordan-Matthews High School as a counselor and math teacher. She became the J.M.H.S. coordinator for the UNC-Chapel Hill Upward Bound Program. She was a member of Kingdom Hall as a Jehovah Witness in Siler City.

Ms. Marsh is survived by her sister, Elga Marsh of the home. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Audrey White; brothers, Graham Marsh and Henry London Marsh.

REUBEN C. “BILL” WARFFORD

Reuben C. “Bill” Warfford died at Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home on Saturday, (09-25-2010).

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, (09-28-2010) at Pittsboro United Methodist Church, with burial following in Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City, with Masonic rites.

The son of Reuben E. Warfford and Dora Warfford Lawson, Bill was born in Spartanburg, SC on March 17, 1942. He graduated from Jordan-Matthews High School, attended N.C. State College, graduated from U.N.C., Chapel Hill, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired in 2000 as Vice-President and Manager of the Pittsboro branch of First Citizens. He served several terms as a town commissioner and later was mayor of Pittsboro. He was also Treasurer of the Triangle J Council of Government. Bill was Chairman of East Chatham Bloodmobile for the Red Cross, President of Chatham County United Way, Chairman of Pittsboro Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer of the Pittsboro Little League and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Pittsboro U.M.C. After serving as President of the Pittsboro Kiwanis Club, Bill was the club’s treasurer for more than 25 years. A 32nd Degree Mason, he was Past Worshipful Master of the Columbus Masonic Lodge 102 in Pittsboro.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Tucker Warfford; son, Christoper Edwin Warfford; brother, James F. Warfford of Siler City; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home, 916 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

CLAYTON J. ALBRIGHT

Clayton Jesse Albright, 91, of Lexington died Thursday, (09-23-2010) at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, Ramseur,

with Rev. Garry Arnett, and Mr. Jason Albright officiating.

Burial followed in Holly Spring Friends Meeting Cemetery.

A former resident of Ramseur, he was a native of Randolph County, a retired farmer and attended the Holly Spring Friends Meeting.

Survivors include daughters, Judy Smith of Asheboro, Betty Coleman of Lexington, Kaye Causey, of Siler City; son, Charles Clayton Albright, of New London; ten grandchildren, and eleven great- grandchildren.

ETHEL OLDHAM CAUSEY

Ethel Oldham Causey, 97, of Goldston died Monday, (09-27-2010) at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center in Trinity.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, (09-30-2010) at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Christian Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Causey was born July 19, 1913, the daughter of E. V. and Cora (Thomas) Oldham. She was a native of Chatham County and a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church, and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Eugene Causey, Sr. and a daughter, Patricia C. Kay.

Survivors include sons, Harvey "Gene" Eugene Causey, Jr. of Asheboro, Ronald L. Causey of Norman; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, (09-29-2010) from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Antioch Christian Church Cemetery Fund, 246 Antioch Christian Church Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

JOEL TALMADGE TALLEY

Joel Talmadge Talley, 55, of Bear Creek died unexpectedly Tuesday, (09-28-2010) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Graveside services will be held Friday, (10-01-2010) at 11 a.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Darrell Garner and members of Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #143 officiating.

Mr. Talley was born August 27, 1955, the son of Talmadge and Gertrude (Brewer) Talley. He was a native of Chatham County, a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and a 1973 graduate of Chatham Central High School. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #143 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, SJ USA, 32 Degree Valley of Raleigh Orient of North Carolina and Shriners International Member #2231 Amran Shriners, Raleigh. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by one daughter, Ashley Talley of Bear Creek; sisters, Rodema T. Richardson of Cary, Eldean T. Altland of Bear Creek; and one grandson.

The family will receive friends Thursday, (09-30-2010) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

RICHARD “BUCK” FIELDS, JR.

Richard "Buck" William Fields, Jr., age 71, of 812 Driftwood Drive, Siler City died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 in Brunswick County, NC.

Mr. Fields was born January 1, 1939, the son of Richard William and Nina Elaine Gaines Fields, Sr. Mr. Fields was a native of Chatham County, a member of Antioch Baptist Church and a veteran of the Air Force. He began his working career with Lester Bradley Trucking and later worked with Arnold Cox Trucking. He worked for over 30 years with Gold Kist Poultry as a breeder service representative. Buck enjoyed going to the beach and just sitting and watching the ocean. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Cox Fields; his parents, Richard and Nina Gaines Fields, Sr.; brother, Mack Fields and a sister, Frances Goins.

He is survived by one daughter, Laura F. Nix of Shallotte; two sons, Gregg Fields and wife, Kris of McLeansville, Rick Fields and wife, Debbie of Siler City; grandchildren, Sara Nix, Grayson Fields, Aubrey Fields, Mattie Fields, Adam Fields; two sisters, Kay F. Willett of Bonlee, Margaret F. Barth of Siler City; and one brother: Allen Fields of Charlotte, NC.

The family received friends Friday, September 24, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The graveside service was held Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 11 a, m, at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating.

CECIL E. “BRUD” PATRICK

Cecil E. “Brud” Patrick, age 77, of Jumping Branch, WV passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at his home following a long illness.

Born June 24, 1933 in Hinton, WV, he was the son of the late Ernest A. Patrick and the late Nora Jane Weiss Patrick Cales. He was preceded in death by an infant twin brother and three sisters.

Cecil was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served 2 years during the Korean War. He then began working for the railroad under the C&O, Chessie System, and later CSX Transportation. He retired after working over 40 years as a brakeman and conductor. He was well known as an avid coonhunter. Many of his lifelong friends shared his interest of good dogs and good hunting. Those who knew him will forever remember his smile and his ability to make others laugh with his endless jokes.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years and devoted caregiver, Loretta Patrick of Jumping Branch, WV; four children, Janet (Patrick) Hill and husband John of Greenfield, Indiana, Eugene Patrick and wife Rhonda of Hinton, WV, Gary Patrick and wife Michelle “Shelly” of Siler City, Kimberly (Patrick) Weiss of Jumping Branch, WV; five grandchildren, Eric Jeffries of Jumping Branch, WV, Kristi (Anderson) Godbey and husband Dwayne of Daniels, WV, Gary (Mike) Patrick of Siler City, Ashley and Andrew Weiss of Jumping Branch, WV; four great-grandchildren, Delanie Bolen of Daniels, WV, Makaylah Jeffries of Hinton, WV, Briyonna and Trevor Godbey of Daniels, WV; his sister, Mary Shrader of South Carolina and half-sister, Alice Nelson.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel in Hinton, WV with the Rev. Otis Cales officiating. Burial followed in the Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton. Friends called at the funeral parlors from 6-9 p.m. Friday.

Pallbearers were Eric Jeffries, Michael Cales, Gary (Mike) Patrick, Dwayne Godbey, David Wills, and friends.

Arrangements were by the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors of Hinton.

RAYMOND RACZKOWSKI

Raymond “Ray” Raczkowski, born August 2, 1925 lived with purpose, as a teaching man who made a difference; resourceful, strong and selfless until he peacefully passed away at home on September 19, 2010.

PHYLLIS KALMBACH BAER

Phyllis Kalmbach Baer, 83, of Pittsboro, died from injuries sustained in a car accident on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL.

Born August 22, 1927 in Grand Rapids, MI, Mrs. Baer was a graduate of Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, NY, class of 1949. She married her loving husband, John Balfour Baer on August 1, 1953 in Grand Rapids, MI. Phyllis and John lived in Long Beach, CA., Cleveland, OH., Sandy Springs, GA and spent more than 30 years in Mountain Lakes, NJ before moving to North Carolina in June 2005. In the summer months, they vacationed at their home in Three Lakes, WI, with family and friends. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Pittsboro and a lifelong member of Three Lakes Rod and Gun Club in WI.

Survivors include her husband, John of NC; sons, John (Kimbra) of Yorkville, IL, William (Gail) of Salmon, Id; daughter, Alison B. Arter of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Erin Briot, Elizabeth O. Baer, Kathryn C. Baer; sister-in-law, Anne Baer and her children, Linda A. (Dave Kjelstrom) Baer and Scott F. (Colleen) Baer; and John’s cousin, the Right Rev. Richard W. Rowland of New Orleans, LA.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

FRANK E. FIELDS

Frank Elwood Fields peacefully passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010 at the age of 82.

A memorial service will be held at Rives Chapel Baptist Church on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Fields was born October 5, 1927, the eleventh child of David and Bessie Fields of Siler City. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II and later in the U.S. Army which took him to El Paso. After his honorable discharge, Frank began working at the El Paso National Bank where he retired as vice president. He was a member of the Western Hills Methodist Church and an active member of Masonic Lodge 1111 as a 33rd degree Mason and the El Maida Shrine Temple. The work of the Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital was very important to him and he supported it for many years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Theta Fields, stepson, Brock Wellman, and siblings, Sam Fields, Myrtle Dowd, Lonnie Fields, Paul Fields, Eula Mae Hart, Eugene Fields, Raymond Fields, Barbee Fields and Rob Fields.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Fields; step-daughter, Terry Wellman; brother, Henry Fields of Siler City; grandson, Bryan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 27, 2010 at 9 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Alexander officiating. Graveside service with military honors and Masonic rites followed at 11 a.m. at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Boulevard, El Paso, TX 79906.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, TX 75219.

STANFORD A. BURKE

Stanford Allen Burke, age 58, of 2114 Poole Town Rd. Asheboro died Friday, September 24, 2010 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro with Rev. Jeff Garner officiating.

Mr. Burke was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Jordan Matthews High School and Appalachian State University where he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity. He was an English and reading teacher and had taught school in Wadesboro, Martinsville, VA, Southwestern Randolph High School, and adult basic education at the Troy and Albemarle Correction Facilities. He loved traveling and spending time with his family. He was a great father, grandfather, uncle and brother. Mr. Burke was preceded in death by his parents, LoAmie Allen and Evie Cheek Burke and step-brother, Clyde Houston Burke.

He is survived by son, Jason Burke and his wife Jennifer Burke of Asheboro, Michael Kelly Burke of Asheboro; grandchildren, Ashley Burke, Kyle Slightom, Kaleb Slightom; former wife, Deborah Mounts of Asheboro; and sister, Becky Burke Parker of Pfafftown.

The family received friends Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, and other times at the home of Jason Burke, 2220 West Chapel Road, Asheboro.
