LALA COTHRAN SMITH
Lala Cothran Smith, 86, of Sanford died Monday, (10-18-2010) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.
Funeral services were held Friday (10-22-2010) at 11 a.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Sanders officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Smith, a former resident of Bear Creek, was born January 20, 1924, the daughter of Roy Wyche and Luna Mae Poole Cothran in Person County. She was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church where she was a former treasurer. She retired from J. C. Penney. Lala was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Hugh Smith, Sr. and brothers, Carlye and Dewey Cothran.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Smith Carter of Ft. Collins, CO, Mae Glasgow of Petersburg, VA; son, Archie Hugh Smith of Sparta; brother, Roy Cothran of Sanford; and three grandchildren.
CORA TURNER COOPER
Cora Turner Cooper, 104, Ramseur, died Monday, (10-11-2010) at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, (10-14-2010) at Loflin Chapel in Ramseur, with Rev. Jim Wall and Rev. Garry Arnett officiating. Burial followed at Staley Cemetery in Staley.
Mrs. Cooper was a native of Randolph County, former resident of Staley, a homemaker and member of Staley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer B. Cooper, children, Fama W. Brinkley, Charles B. Cooper, and a grandson, Gary Lewis Beard.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Lois Clark of Siler City, Patsy Beard of Staley; son, Jacky Cooper of Staley; sister, Mary Lea Myers, Hunington Beach, Ca.; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, six great-great- grandchildren, and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to an organization of donor's choice.
PEARL YOW CORDER
Pearl Yow Corder, 96, of Siler City died Wednesday, (10-20-2010) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.
Funeral services were held Saturday (10-23-2010) at 2 p.m. at Providence Independent Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Corder was born March 5, 1914. She was a native of Chatham County, a member of Providence Independent United Methodist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bill Yow and Jesse Corder.
THOMAS EUGENE “GENE” DURHAM
Thomas Eugene “Gene” Durham, 82, of Pittsboro died Wednesday (10-20-2010) at his family home place.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, (10-24-2010) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home with Rev. Virginia Taylor and the Rev. Sercy Jackson presiding. Interment followed in Lystra Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Durham was born October 28, 1927 in Chatham County, the son of Edward Watson Durham and Jennie Florence Herndon Durham. A graduate of Pittsboro High School, he served in the US Navy on the USS Comstock for four years, and served as the Route 3 Pittsboro rural route mail carrier for 30 years.
Survivors include his brother, Clarence Durham of the home; sisters, Geraldine Harris of Raleigh, Mary Julia Matlock of Durham. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harold Durham and William Durham.

EVA LEE BECK
Eva Lee Beck, 82 of Bear Creek died Friday, (10-22-2010) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation in Siler City.
Graveside services were held Sunday, (10-24-2010) at 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating.
Miss Beck was born March 5, 1928 the daughter of Earl Joseph and Eutha Ada Sizemore Beck. A native of Randolph County, she was employed with Hadley-Peoples for over 30 years and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Shewas preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Wade, Howard, Cecil Beck and a sister, Mary Alice Goss.
There were no immediate survivors.

PEGGY MOSS WOMACK
Mrs. Peggy Moss Womack, 73, of Broadway died Saturday (10-23-2010) at her home.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (10-27-2010) at Baptist Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Alex Smith and Rev. George Stalling, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
A resident of Lee County, she was the daughter of the late James Russell and Alma Weaver Moss. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris L. Moss. She served her church as youth choir director and Sunday school teacher for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Franklin Wayne Womack; daughters, Audrey Womack of Greensboro, Frankie W. Durham, Wendy W. Smith, both of Sanford; sister, Faye Moss Cline of Lillington; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
DAVID ALLEN DHANENS
David Allen Dhanens, 72, of Bennett, died Saturday, (10-23-2010) at his residence.
No services are scheduled.
Mr. Dhanens was a native of Buffalo, NY and a retired machinist.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Hicks Dhanens; daughter, Heather Henson of Orlando, FL; step-son, Tony Spencer of Bennett; brothers, Tom Dhanens, of Cole Valley, Illinois, Ted Dhanens of Buffalo, NY; one grandson, and two step-granddaughters.

KATIE JOHNSON
Katie Johnson, 85, of Siler City, died Saturday, (10-23-2010) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.
The funeral was held Tuesday, (10-26-2010) at 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home with Rev. Patrick Sinclair officiating. Burial followed in Christian Chapel Cemetery at New Hill.
Mrs. Johnson was born January 13, 1925, the daughter of Leslie and Elizabeth Wilson Johnson. She was a native of Harnett County, retired from Hadley-Peoples and attended Lighthouse Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Eva Fox of Efland, Margaret Wilson of the home; sons, Carlie Ray Baker of Piedmont, SC, Jerry Lee Baker of Siler City; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LEE
Mr. Benjamin Franklin Lee, 89, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (10-17-2010) at Chapel Hill Rehab. and Health Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday (10-21-2010) at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth M. Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Lee was a member of Mitchell Chapel Church. He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara Lee Horton of Durham, Lealer Lee Haith of Pittsboro, Evie Levern Lee of Pittsboro; son, Benjamin Michael Lee of Durham; sister, Leomie L. Alston of Pittsboro; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
AVERLEE WATSON
Rev. Mrs. Averlee Watson, 88, of Siler City died Sunday (10-17-10 at her home.
Funeral services were held Saturday (10-23-10 at 2 p.m. at Glovers Grove AME Zion Church, with Rev. Gloria Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Watson was a homemaker.
Survivors include her children, James Watson of the home, Colester Watson, Rev. Clyde Watson, George Watson, Jr., all of Siler City, and Ruby Watson Williams of Greensboro; 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren.
VIVIAN HEADEN LAMBERT
Mrs. Vivian Headen Lambert, 93, of Moncure, died Monday (10-18-2010) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.
Funeral services were held Saturday (10-23-2010) at 1 p.m. at Mt. View AME Zion Church in Moncure, with Rev. Laura Headen officiating. Burial followed at Bryant Memorial Garden.
Mrs. Lambert was educated in the Chatham County schools, and was employed by the I.R.S. She also worked at Josephine Braid Nursing Home and was a member of Union Grove AME Zion Church.
Surviving is one son, Charles Raymond Headen of Moncure and four grandchildren.
AUGUSTA JEAN JOHNSON
Augusta Jean Johnson, 74, of Bear Creek died Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.
Mrs. Johnson was born January 16, 1936, the daughter of Myron and Eliza (Tyler) Taylor. She was a native of Chatham County and attended Goldston United Methodist Church. She was a retired secretary for the Teamsters Union. She was lovingly cared for by her niece, Denise Dunn the last several years of her life. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Douglas Johnson and her parents.
She is survived by one sister, Myra Taylor Dunn; one brother, William Jerome Taylor of Orange County, CA; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Mary Frances Jones of Graham, and Mary Smith of Bear Creek.

MARY “EVELYN” STOKES
Mary Evelyn Stokes, 85, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010. She was born January 21, 1925 in Clayton, NC to the James Henry and Mary Eunice Webster. Mrs. Stokes was a member of First Baptist Church, Dallas.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Stokes of Dallas; sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Chris Stokes of Dallas, Harold and Elaine Stokes of Dallas, Gerald and Carol Stokes of Douglasville, David Stokes and Gayla Walker of Dallas; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Bob Mason of Hahira, GA; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday (10-25-2010) at 3 p.m. at Clark Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gregg Potts officiating. Interment followed in Paulding Memorial Gardens.
James Stokes, Brian Stokes, Hal Stokes, Brad Stokes, Chad Allen, Jeremy Hines, Bruce Jackson and James Mason served as pallbearers.
The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday, October 24, 2010 from 5 until 7 p.m.
Clark Funeral Home, Kiram, GA, was in charge of arrangements.
