MARY DELLA VESTAL EADS

Mary Della Vestal Eads, 87, of Sanford died Friday, (12-24-2010) at her home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (12-29-2010) at Ephesus Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Eads was born in Yadkin County, the daughter of the late Will and Eunice Collins Vestal. A member of Ephesus Baptist Church, she served as an Elder, was a member of the Women’s Missionary Group, and the Ephesus Senior Citizens Group. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hassel Lee Eads; sisters, Leola V. McCollum, Ila V. Wall, Collie V. Durham, Gradie V. Durham; brothers, Ed Vestal, Roby Vestal, Carmie Vestal, and Jonie Vestal.

Survivors include daughters, Nancy E. McLendon of Sanford, Joyce E. Whisnant of Germantown, TN; son, Bruce W. Eads of Albuquerque, NM; sister, Pearlie V. Avery of Sanford; brother, Albert Vestal of Yadkinville; two grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Citizens Group at Ephesus Baptist Church, 2724 White Hill Road, Sanford, NC 27332.

DOCK SWANEY

Dock Nixon Swaney, 83, of Asheboro, was promoted to glory on December 24, 2010. A native of Randolph County, he was born April 1, 1927, to Henry Taylor Swaney and Sarah Garren Swaney. He was the oldest of ten children. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles, sister Frances Luther, and his wife of sixty-three years, Kathleen Cox Swaney.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Tysinger and husband Charles of Asheboro; sons, Darrell Swaney of Denton, Jerry Swaney and wife June of Staley, Todd Swaney and wife Charlene of Asheboro; brothers, Jack Swaney and wife Irene of Trinity, Rev. Arthur Swaney and wife Hilda, Ted Swaney and wife Louise, Donald Swaney and wife Bonnie; sisters, Gladys Hinshaw and husband Paul, Bobbie Tysinger and husband Kenneth, Doris Gordon and husband Jaffey, all of Asheboro; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U. S. Army in Germany. He owned and operated Pilot Barber Shop in Asheboro, and his barbering career covered a span of over fifty years. He also tuned and repaired pianos for churches and individuals.

“Uncle Dock, ” as he was affectionately known, loved music, especially Southern and Bluegrass Gospel. He organized area singings, and sang with the Visionaires Quartet for many years. He enjoyed playing bluegrass with his friends on most Thursdays in his home, and he sang baritone in the Rushwood Park Men’s Quartet.

He was a charter member of Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church. He and others worked cutting trees to clear the land for the church in 1949, and he and others worked with Rev. Paul Teague to start the first church in 1950.

Funeral arrangements were at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro, with visitation for family and friends at Ridge from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 28. funeral service was at Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church of Asheboro, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, with Dr. Ron L. Hamilton and Rev. Brent C. Tysinger officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memorial Park with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions, in his honor, be made to the Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church Building Fund, 1810 Old Farmer Road, Asheboro, NC 27205.

Special thanks to the staff at Clapp’s, Randolph Hospital, Veteran’s Hospital in Salisbury and Durham, Hospice of Randolph County, Dr. Sopala and Dr. McCarty.

CHARLES “SKIPPER” HARRIS

Charles "Skipper" Brooks Harris, age 68, of 4995 Bonlee-Bennett Road, Bear Creek, died Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mr. Harris was born July 16, 1942, the son of Charles Lee and Margaret (Brooks) Harris. He was born in Randolph County, attended Jordan-Matthews High School and was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Joan Fabrics and was a poultry and cattle farmer. He was a loving, compassionate man who enjoyed work, his family and watching the Washington Redskins play. Skipper was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret Brooks Harris.

He is survived by his loving companion of 17 years, Brenda Cosby Parnell of the home; one sister, Nancy H. Underwood and husband Leon of Bear Creek; nephew, Lee Underwood and wife Amy of Seagrove; niece, Lynn Crowley and husband Dee of Siler City; great-nephew, Parker Crowley; great nieces, Chesney Crowley and Mattie Underwood; extended family members: Lisa Price and husband Henry of Mt Vernon, GA, Dwayne Parnell of Siler City, Darrell Parnell and wife, Becky of Siler City, Preston Brown and Mariah Brown of Mt. Vernon, GA, William and Ethan Price of Mt. Vernon, GA, Tristan Parnell of Siler City, and Cassilyn Parnell of Siler City.

The family received friends Tuesday, December 28, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. The funeral was held Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Darrell Williams and Rev. Eddie Ellison officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, West Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

MR. DAVID LEE MITCHELL

David Lee Mitchell was born on April 30, 1924 to the late John Pearl and Lina Louise Mitchell. He departed this life on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. He grew up in the Mount Vernon Springs Community in Siler City, NC. He had a love for music and began playing the guitar at the age of nine years old. He taught many others this art, some of them played in traveling bands along the east coast. He also had the unique ability of telling hilarious jokes and stories, much to the delight of his children and others. “Dave”, as he was affectionately called, leaves this legacy as a lasting memory of this fun-loving man.

David worked for almost forty years as a foreman at the Hancock Lumber Company in Bonlee, NC, and later, worked part-time at Wrenn Brothers in Siler City, NC. He was a master in measuring and assembly, teaching others the art of the trade.

He joined Palmer’s Chapel Unity Holy Church at an early age and later became a member of Unity Powerhouse Holy Church and recently captured his audience with his guitar renditions and songs at Unity Powerhouse Church.

One son, Tommy Edward preceded him in death.

He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish wonderful memories, his wife, Rev. Listeen Mitchell; daughters, Mary Harris, Evelyn Mitchell of Siler City, Brenda Dark (James) of Staley, Rebecca Clapp (Joey, Special Friend) of Siler City, Pearlie Williams (Linel) the sister-cousin of Sanford; Betty Brown, daughter-in-law of Philadelphia, PA. He also leaves his sisters, Addie Womble, Siler City, Betty Johnson of Siler City; brothers, Bobby Mitchell (Marselle) of Siler City, Jimmy Mitchell (Linda) of Greensboro; one aunt, Theodosia Walker of Philadelphia, PA. The seven grandchildren, nine-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends will greatly miss him.

The funeral was held Friday, December 10 at 2 p.m. at Unity Powerhouse Holy Church with Bishop William Goins delivering the Eulogy.

Services were entrusted to Russell’s Funeral Services.

FRED C. ARRINGTON

Ypsilanti Twp., MI – Fred C. Arrington, 91, died Tuesday (12-14-2010) at the University of Michigan Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Sunday (12-19-2010) at 2 p.m. at Clark Towers in Ypsilanti with Rev. Kent Jennings officiating.

Mr. Arrington was born September 25, 1919, in Surry County, the son of Christopher and Mary Taylor Arrington. After serving in the U.S. Army during WW II in the Atlantic Theatre, he was employed as a meat market manager. A member of Loves Creek Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Casey Arrington.

Survivors include his son, Phillip Arrington of Michigan and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Loves Creek Baptist Church, 14680 U.S. 64 West, Siler City, NC 27344.

VIVIAN BUCK LOWE

Mrs. Vivian Buck Lowe, 87, of Galloway Ridge in Fearrington Village, died Monday, (12-13-2010) at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Friday (12-17-2010) at Lowes Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Forrest Gale presiding. A private entombment was held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens mausoleum.

Mrs. Lowe was born August 4, 1923 in Craven County, the daughter of George Washington Buck, Sr. and Annie Elizabeth Gaskins Buck. She was educated in the Vanceboro school system. A member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church, she retired from Burroughs Wellcome, and was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lowe.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Lowes Grove Baptist Church, 4430 S. Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713.

JUNE VIRGINIA SHAVER STALEY

Mrs. June Virginia Shaver Staley, 91, of Liberty died Saturday, (12-18-2010) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, (12-21-2010) at 11 a.m. at Liberty Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Eugene Dean and Rev. Bill Bigham officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery.

The daughter of the late Albert and Maude Shaver, she was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, L. Worth Staley.

Surviving are her ten children, Shirley Duncan-Hufstetler, Frances “Cissy” Manley, Johnny Staley, Jimmy Staley, Larry Staley, Albert Staley, Linda Burgett, Judy Chamberlain, Marian Staley, Debra Hinshaw; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

CHRIS THOMAS DiGREGORIO

Chris Thomas DiGregorio of Shenandoah Junction, WV, died Monday, (12-20-2010) at his home.

Born May 24, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY, to Nicholas Vincent DiGregorio and Angelina Spinelli DiGregorio, Chris graduated from Smithtown High School and attended Farmingdale College. He was a retired Suffolk County New York Police Officer, Badge No. 1069. He was the owner and trainer of the Little E Thoroughbred Farm.

Survivors include his wife, Ethlene Castevens Hayes DiGregorio; his mother, Angelina, of Kings Park, NY; daughter, Angela Orrell of McKenney, VA; sons, Christopher of Southold, NY, Robert of Cutchogue, NY; step-daughter, Tina White of Siler City; brother, Peter of Charlotte; sister, Catherine Paret of Southbury, CT; six grandchildren and four step–grandchildren.

A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, (12-23-2010), at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown, WV, with the Rev. Fr. Matthew Rowgh as celebrant.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25403.

TAMMY DICKENS LAMONDS

Tammy Dickens Lamonds, 42, of 1650 Cattail Way, Supply, died Monday, December 20, 2010 in Supply.

Mrs. Lamonds was born January 13, 1968, the daughter of William R. Dickens and Brenda (Wagoner) Brown. She was born in Alamance County, attended Bonlee Elementary School, Chatham Central High School and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Tammy enjoyed cooking and spending time at the beach. She was a phlebotomist and a cook in a nursing facility. She was preceded in death by a son, Julius Lytton and her step-father, Gene Wilson.

She is survived by her mother, Brenda (Wagoner) Brown and her husband, Dwight; one sister, Rene' Emery of Snow Camp; and one brother, Ryan Wilson of Bear Creek; special nieces and a special nephew.

The family will receive friends, Monday, December 27, 2010 from 1:30 - 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek. The funeral will be Monday, December 27, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, West Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

MARY RUTH KELLY

Mary Ruth Kelly, 80, of Siler City, died Wednesday, (12-08-2010) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

The graveside service was held Friday at 2 p.m. at Horseshoe Presbyterian Church with Rev. Phillip Nelson and George Stanley officiating.

Mrs. Kelly was born January 31, 1930, the daughter of Jona Ander and Mary Stanley Hutchins. A native of Surry County, she was a member of Horseshoe Presbyterian Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Kelly; her parents and a sister, Ruby Kate Jordan.

Survivors include sisters: Shorty Phillips of Goldston, and Kathleen Burke of Cameron.
Memorials may be made to the Horseshoe Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 6140 Pittsboro-Goldston Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

RANDY SIRLS

Randy Sirls, 53, of Hampstead, died unexpectedly, Saturday (12-11-2010).

There will be no formal service, but visitation will be at the Sirls’ home, 1017 Mallard Bay Road in Hampstead, Saturday, (12-18-2010) from 1-3 p.m.

Mr. Sirls was born April 10, 1957 and raised in Pittsboro. He was a graduate of Northwood High School and lived most of his adult life in coastal Pender County.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth Collins Sirls; son, Andrew; brothers, Jamie and Doug; sister, Leann Spangler. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Douglas and Minnie Belle Sirls.
