Andrew McClain
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Andrew Jackson McClain, 87, of 716 Sipes St., died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. He was the son of the late Andrew and Julie Froneberger McClain and a native of York County, S.C. He joined Ebenezer Baptist Church in Kings Mountain at an early age. He served on the Usher Board, the Spiritual Choir, Chairman of the Deacon Board, President of the Baptist Training Union and the Friendly Aid. He also served on the F.H.A. Committee. He was a farmer and also worked for the Kings Mountain District Schools. He was the Worshipful Master of the D.A. McKay Lodge #584. He was also the Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star Charity Chapter #548. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Beatrice Wray McClain and Stella Mae Adams McClain; a daughter, Jenny Catherine McClain; and two sons, George Abraham McClain and Robert Lee McClain. He leaves to cherish fond memories, a loving wife, Dorcas Hunter McClain; nine sons, Paul E. McClain, Rev. Arthur McClain, David McClain and Joseph McClain, all of Kings Mountain, Theodore McClain of Shelby, Bishop Jessie G. McClain of Lincolnton, Chares O. McClain of Mary Esther, Fla., Hillard Hunter Jr. of Altus, Okla., and Tim Hunter of Albany, Ga.; three daughters, Rev. Inez Goddard of Kings Mountain, Shirley Mae Williams of Atlanta, and Margaret Hunter Smith of Gastonia; two brothers, John Wesley McClain of Waco and Willie McClain of Kings Mountain; 42 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest L. Simon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at 230 Gary Beam Road, Kings Mountain. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Honeycutt
SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Ann Miller Honeycutt, 61, of 2119 Flint Hill Church Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Rutherford County, a daughter of the late Howard and Louise Crawford Miller. She was a homemaker and member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Kathy Lynn Simmons and Sandra Gail Earls; and a granddaughter, Mary Michelle Simmons. She is survived by one son, Jeffery Scott Honeycutt of Shelby; one daughter, Janet Honeycutt of Ellenboro; one brother, Ronald Miller of Union Mills; three sisters, Dorothy Sisk of Spindale, Edith Miller of Ruth and Hazel Bennett of Cliffside; five grandchildren, Jeremy Walker, Krystal Lynn Roemer, Daniel Scott Greene, Jeffery Scott Greene and Brandi Nicole Valcore; and two great-grandchildren, Donnie Weaver and Kenley Burdett. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, with the Revs. Bo Wagner and Bill Alley officiating. Burial will be in Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Mabel Williams
SHELBY — Mrs. Mabel Hollifield Williams, 87, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002. She was born March 1, 1915, in Shelby, the daughter of the late Rose Thornburg and Crowell G. Hollifield. Mabel’s life was unselfishly devoted to her family and her friends, and the influence she had on each of their lives will always remain. Her greatest joy in life came from what she could do for others. She was a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Shelby, where she gave of her talents in service for the Lord for many years. In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence J. Williams. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Williams Villas and her husband, Milton H.; five grandchildren, Christopher Todd Mauney and his wife, Vickie, Kimberly Dawn Mauney and her husband, Alan, Scott Villas and his wife, Alycia, Jaimie Villas Phipps and her husband, Tom, and Jennifer Villas Hubbard and her husband, Larry; and 12 precious great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. A service celebrating Mabel’s life on Earth will be held at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Shelby on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Revs Robert Andress and Reed Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

SHELBY — Mr. Alfred Dean “Sweet” Herndon, 63, of 1808 Greenville Drive, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Brenda Smith Platt, 60, of 712 Bridges Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence “Grassy” Smith and a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Gary W. Platt, of Kings Mountain; three sons, Edmond Platt of Kings Mountain, Cash Platt of Edgewater, Fla., and Ken Platt of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Vickie Lowman and husband, Neal, of Brunswick, Ga., Angie Sawyer and husband, Timothy, of Statesville, and Trina Wingate of Charlotte; her mother, Ionia Byars Smith of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Clarence “Buddy” Smith Jr. and wife, Gloria, and Freddie Smith and wife, Naomi, all of Kings Mountain; a sister, Josephine “Jo” Moss of Kings Mountain; and eight grandchildren. Robert Cotter
MORGANTON — Mr. Robert Edwin Cotter, 78, of Farmland Acres, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. Born Feb. 8, 1924, in Southampton, Pa., he was a son of the late Joseph Edwin and Adelaide Henderson Cotter. He retired as a lieutenant from the Navy and served in both World War II and the Korean War. He later retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The family wishes to thank, and is very grateful for the constant, kind, loving professional care given to Robert and all family members by the staff of Hospice of Burke County. Mr. Cotter is survived by his wife, Carol Boyden Cotter of the home; sons, Mark Steven Cotter and his wife, Bobbi, of La Cresenta, Calif., and Michael Scott Cotter and his wife, Robin, of Morganton; a daughter, Kimberly Nance and her husband, David, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Sam Cotter and Jyoti Cotter, both of California, and Robby Cotter and Michael Cotter, both of Morganton. ‘Bill’ Guffey
ELLENBORO — Mr. Earnest Grant “Bill” Guffey, 66, of 362 Duncan’s Creek Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville. Born June 27, 1936, in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Archie Raymond and Lottie Hudson Guffey. He retired as a truck driver from Martin Motor Lines and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Casar. He served in the Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dewey Preston Guffey; and two sisters, Kathleen Dalton and Aileen Maxwell. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Judy Bright Guffey of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Keith and Angie Guffey of Polkville and Eldon Wray and Michelle Guffey of Blacksburg, S.C.; three grandchildren, Thomas Grant Guffey, Taylor Guffey and Austin Guffey; and a special friend, Dwight Swafford of Ellenboro. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Jody Yopp officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. CHERRYVILLE — Mr. David Ambrose Brittain, 65, of 707 Delview Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born July 4, 1937, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late James Esley and Annie Mae Perry Brittain. He was formerly employed at Cocker Foundry in Gastonia as a forklift operator and was a member of First Foursquare Gospel Church, Cherryville. He is survived by six brothers, Paul, Mack, Jake, Randy and Joey Brittain, all of Cherryville, and Bob Brittain of Shelby; three sisters, LaRue Boston of Cherryville, Monte Leonhardt of Kings Mountain and Fonda Rulapaugh of Simpsonville, S.C.; and 22 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Foursquare Gospel Church with Rev. Jack Fox officiating with entombment in Rose Hill Memorial Park. George Houser
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. George Henry Houser, 87, of 104 E. Ridge St., died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, he was the third child of the late Horace Mayo and Sarah Evangeline Falls Houser. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, where he was a former choir and church council member. He served as past president of Kings Mountain Lions Club and Kings Mountain Country Club. He was very active in his community and in 1973 led a successful campaign for a new addition to Kings Mountain Hospital. He spent most of his life with Sadie Mills Inc., where he served as secretary and past president. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, George Andrew Hudson; brothers, William “Bill” Houser and Douglas Houser; and sisters, Frances Houser Lutz and Linda Houser Blanton. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Laura Mauney Houser; two daughters and their husbands, Shirley Houser Bimrose and Fred of Kings Mountain and Beth Houser McIntyre and Lee of Gastonia; a sister, Lois Evangeline Houser of Clemson, S.C.; grandchildren, Laura Hudson Johnson and her husband, Sam, of Jamestown, Betsy McIntyre Hurst and her husband, Brad, of Gastonia and Lee “Trey” McIntyre III of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Hayes and Sarah Katherine Hayes of Jamestown and Lauralee Elizabeth Hurst of Gastonia. He worked in the plumbing trade and was Baptist. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Johnny Ray Hope and wife, Nina, of Shelby; two sisters, Raccna McConnell and husband, Timothy, of Ladson, S.C., and Tammy Alexander and husband, Terry, of Summersville, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. GREENSBORO — Mr. J. B. Self, Sr., 83, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at his residence. J. B. was born Nov. 9, 1918, in Fallston, to the late Nelson Greer Self and Docia Wright Self. He worked for J. P. Stevens and Central Motor Lines. After retirement he worked for Pegram Lumber Company. He loved to travel and enjoyed woodworking. Mr. Self was preceded in death by his wife, Willie W. Self; and his brother, Coleman F. Self. He is survived by his daughters, Marcia Nolan and Nancy Waldrop, son, J. B. Self, Jr. and his wife, Cathy, all of Greensboro; brother, Buford Lee Self, Sr. of Shelby; sisters, Louise Norman, May Cabiness, Kathleen Wolfe, all of Shelby; grandchildren, Jane Waldrop of Nashville, Tenn., Jason Waldrop and his wife, Kathy, of Charlotte, Brad Self, Kelly Self, both of Greensboro; and one great-grandchild, Will Waldrop of Charlotte. A service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum with the Rev. Bart Milleson officiating.
