Glennie Sue Serrett Collins

Glennie Sue Serrett Collins, 69, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at her residence on Piedmont Road. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of Ralph Surrett, Sr. and Nellie Worley Surrett of Canton, NC.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, John M. Collins; daughter, Lisa C. Rutledge and husband, George of Spartanburg, SC; one brother, Ralph Surrett of Canton; three sisters, Jean Willis, Grace Chapman and Wilma Freeman, all of Canton; one grandson, Ian G. Rutledge of Spartanburg.

Mrs. Collins was a member of Arney’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of the School of Nursing at NC Baptist Hospital. She worked in Forsyth County, Wake County and Burke County and had retired from Broughton Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, June 11th at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with Reverend Perry Brown officiating. Interment will follow the service at Arney’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Arney’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 3625 Fish Hatchery Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Mr. Roy Lee Benfield

Mr. Roy Lee Benfield, 71, of Carl Freeman Avenue, died Monday, September 10 at the Hospice Shytle House in Valdese. He was born June 1, 1932 in Burke County and was son of the late George Benfield and Mary Whisenant Benfield.

Mr. Benfield was a member of Zion Baptist Church and was retired from Burnette Paving Company. He was a veteran of the US Army and a former member of the Oak Hill Ruritan Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ellen Benfield and Jane Powell.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bowman Benfield; 2 sons, Roy L. Benfield and David E. Benfield both of Morganton; daughter, Michelle Benfield of Morganton; 3 sisters, Frances Huffman, Margaret Beck and Rosemary Riddle all of Morganton; 8 grandchildren; Nicole Benfield, Amber Benfield, David Lee Benfield, Justin Clay Beaver, Travis Benfield, Joshua Benfield, Brittany Benfield and Chelsie Harmon.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday at Zion Baptist Church with the Reverends Dr. Ralph May, James Lambert and Roger Beck officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 at Kirksey Funeral Home and other times at the home of David Benfield on Carl Freeman Avenue.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Burke County, P O Box 1029, Valdese, NC 28690.

Pamela Sue Groves Clontz

Pamela Sue Groves Clontz, age 59, of Asheville, N.C. formerly of San Angelo, Texas, died Monday, June 7, 2004 in Mission Hospital, Asheville, N.C.

Born in Tom Green County, Texas to the late James A. and Pauline Fox Groves, she was an employee of George Morosani Industrial Realtor.

Surviving are her husband, Larry James Clontz of Asheville, N.C.; one son, Robert James Clontz of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one daughter, Wendy Clontz Hamilton and husband, Mark of Jackson, Ohio; two grandchildren, Hunter and Megan Hamilton of Jackson, Ohio; mother-in-law, Mary Jo Clontz of Marion, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Judith Morosani and husband, George of Asheville, N.C.

Services will be held 11:00 o'clock, Thursday, June 10, 2004 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, N.C. Rev. Doug Prevette will officiate with burial following in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Marion, N.C. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Barbara Jean Pitman

Barbara Jean Pitman, 65, of Marion, died, Saturday, March 6, 2004, at McDowell Hospital.

Born in McDowell County to the late Russell T. Pitman and Airalee McKinney Pitman, she worked in the Sheltered Workshop at Foothills Industry and attended Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are one sister, Francis Cannon, of Marion; a special nephew, Rev. Jim Cannon of Marion; a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 3:00p.m., Monday, March 8, 2004, in the McCall Memorial Chapel, with Reverends Walker Tony and Paul Christy officiating. Burial will follow at the Laurel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Katherine Walton Thomason

Mrs. Katherine Walton Thomason, 101, of 500 Lenoir Road in Morganton died at her residence on Friday, July 30, 2004. Mrs. Thomason was a life – long resident of Morganton, born June 17, 1903, to the late William Erwin Walton and Mary Moore Walton. Her husband Frank Smith Thomason preceded her in death in 1943. She was the sister of the late C. V. “Bullet” Walton of Morganton.

Mrs. Thomason was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton and was the recipient of the Lifetime Membership Award of the Presbyterian Women. For over fifty years she prepared the elements for Communion.

She retired after forty-five years of service at the North Carolina School for the Deaf and was the principal at Jeter Hall for twenty-five years. She diligently served the needs of the hundreds of deaf children and believed in tailoring instruction to meet the needs of each individual.

Katherine “Kack” to her family and friends was an avid bridge player and Atlanta Braves fan. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Book Club, the first Book Club organized in Morganton and the second Book Club organized in North Carolina. Her main focus was her family and her church.

Mrs. Thomason is survived by: a niece Mary Walton Hewat; two grand nephews John Robert Hewat Jr. and William Walton Hewat and five great grand nieces and nephews locally. She is also survived by a niece and nephew in Georgia: Louisa Walton McFadden and Joseph P. Walton and several grand nieces and nephews there.

A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM Monday, August 2, 2004 at Forest Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Susan Rice officiating.

The family will receive friends 11:00 AM till noon Monday at the Grace Ridge Mezzanine.

Memorials in Mrs. Thomason ‘s memory may be made to the Endowment Fund c/o the First Presbyterian Church, 100 Silver Creek Road, Morganton NC 28655.

Mr. Austin Monroe Smith, Sr.

Mr. Austin Monroe Smith, Sr., 81, of 120 Wedgewood Drive, Morganton, died Friday, January 21st at his home.

He was born October 13, 1923 in Morganton and was son of the late Decatur Smith and Hattie Pless Smith.

Austin sold brick in Morganton and the surrounding area for 22 years and recently worked as a locksmith. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Morganton and Quaker Meadows Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Fox Smith, a son, Austin Smith, Jr. and wife Kathleen, grandchildren, Tracy Barnes and husband, David, of Eva, Alabama; Jason Smith and wife, Brandi of Winston-Salem, Austin Smith III and Jonathan Smith of Morganton and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 24th at First Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Tom Bland and Rev. Fred Schuszler presiding. Visitation is one hour prior to the service in the church parlor at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P O Box 459, Morganton, NC 28680.

Mr. Harvey “Deuce” Brown

Mr. Harvey “Deuce” Brown, 53, of Messer Avenue in Glen Alpine died, Sunday, April 6, 2003 at his residence. Born May10, 1949 in Burke County he was the son of Margie Brown of Morganton and the late Hoarce Brown.

Mr. Brown was working for Robert Bergelin Company in Morganton as a master craftsman and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam Conflict.

In addition to his mother he is survived by: his loving wife of twenty nine years Shelah Lail Brown; sons Harvey Scott Brown and wife Teresa of Rutherfordton, Randy L. Brown of the home; brothers Johnny Mac Brown of Lenoir, Horace Brown Jr. of Valdese, Gary Brown of Morganton, Tommy Ray Brown of Burlington; sister Carolyn Brown Powell of Drexel and a granddaughter Sarah Michele Brown.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Jessie Head officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 7 till 8:30 Tuesday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Leonard G. Buchanan

Leonard G. Buchanan, age 89, of Marion, N.C. died Saturday September 13, 2003 in Brian Center of Spruce Pine, N.C.

Born in McDowell County to the late Wallace and Carrie Elliott Buchanan, he was a retired employee of American Thread Company and a veteran of the US Army of WWII. He was a member of Turkey Cove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Frankie Biddix Buchanan.

Surviving are his present wife, Thelma Bruner Buchanan of the home; two daughters, Pat Tipton of Marion and Margaret Walker and husband, Carroll of Spartanburg, S.C.; one grandson, Randy Tipton and wife, Karen; three great granddaughters, Jessica Tipton, Ashley Tipton and Lindsey Tipton; two step-sons, James Gurley of Knoxville, Tn. And Bobby Gurley of Marion; one step-daughter, Helen Riddle of Apex, N.C.

Services will be held 1:00 o’clock Tuesday, September 16, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Milton Hollifield and Rev. Charles Dicks will officiate with burial following in Turkey Cove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 at Kirksey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Mitchell County Hospice.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Dennis James Ray

Dennis James Ray, 38, of Nebo, died, Monday, June 7, 2004, at his residence. Born November 11, 1965, in McDowell County to Etrula Strickland Lowe and the late Wayne Edward Ray. In addition to his father, he is also preceded in death by his baby sister Sylcdia.

Surviving are his mother, Etrula Strickland Lowe of Nebo; his step-father, Roger Lowe of Elizabethton, TN; 5 brothers, Duane Ray, Rickey Ray, Terry Haney, Vince Ray & Eric Houlck all of Marion; 4 sisters, Sharon Crowder, Lisa McKinney, Jeannie Ray & Shelley Ray all of Marion; 10 nieces, Nikki, Jennifer, Casey, Amber, Wayne, Chris, Daniel, Billy Joe & Justin; and one great nephew, Doodlebug.

Services will be held 5:00PM, Thursday, June 10, 2004 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverends Steve Durham and Ray Stockton officiating. Burial will follow at the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Margaret Carr Collett

Mrs. Margaret Carr Collett died Monday, April 7, 2003 at her home. Born March 21, 1919 in Burke County she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Winn Carr.

She was a graduated from Winthrop College in Home Economics and was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron, a national honorary home economics fraternity.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Sterling Ruffin Collett Jr. and a brother Ben Carr.

She is survived by: son Sterling R. Collett III and wife Martha Smith Collett ; daughters Mary Ruffin Collett, Margaret Elizabeth Collett, Martha Collett Mellon and husband Frank Mellon ; seven grandchildren and twenty one nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Forest Hill Cemetery with the Reverends Doctor Matthew Brown and officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 till 3 PM on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 in the parlor of The First Presbyterian Church in Morganton.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Library Foundation, 204 South King Street, Morganton NC 28655.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Collett family with arrangements.
