SHELBY — Mr. Pink Littlejohn, 88, of White Oak Manor, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Fannie Belle Turner Ledford, 79, of 300 Roy Eaker Road, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. Born Dec. 31, 1922, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Turner and Lillie Norman Turner. She retired as office manager from Cleveland County Fair Association, after 34 years of service. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, where she was active in the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class, member of Chancel Choir, Lola Allran Circle and former director of the Hand Bell and Children’s Choir. She was a member of the Cherryville Music Club and Cherryville Little Theatre, where she was a member of the Board of Directors and also acted and directed numerous plays. She was also named Cherryville Charity League Woman of the Year. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, CD Ledford of the home; two daughters, Rhonda L. Wehunt and husband, Jim, and Crystal L. Thornburg and husband, Chad, all of Cherryville; a brother, James Turner of Belwood; a sister, Vangie Turner of Cherryville; and five grandchildren, Amy Wehunt of Pineville, Travis Wehunt, Justin Thornburg, Ryan Thornburg and Leslie Thornburg, all of Cherryville. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Cherryville with the Rev. James L. Pyatt officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service at the church. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. GASTONIA — Mr. Laylon Lee Rowland, 72, of 949 Dallas-Bessemer City Highway, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 20, 1930, in Gaston County, a son of the late James Jenkins and Hazel Morgan Rowland. Mr. Rowland was a self-employed accountant and member of Myrtle United Methodist Church. He served in the Army in Korea. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Clara Patton Rowland, and two brothers, George A. Rowland and Garland Rowland. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betty Cook Rowland; two sons, Timothy Lee Rowland and wife, Lynn, of Grover and Gary L. Rowland, of Gastonia; a daughter, Susan Poston and husband, Wayne, of Cherryville; two brothers, Jimmy Rowland and Harvey Rowland, both of Clover; four grandchildren, Leigh Ann Simmons of Cary, Sasha Poston of Asheville, and Laura and Ryan Poston of Cherryville. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Myrtle United Methodist Church in Gastonia with the Rev. Alice Day officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. LAWNDALE — Mr. Michael Douglas Maynard, 51, of 6409 Fallston Road, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 27, 1951, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of Sarah Bentley Johnson and stepfather, Earl, and the late Joe Douglas Maynard. He retired as a software engineer. In addition to his mother and stepfather, he is survived by his wife, Carol Lynette Tanner Maynard; a son, Joseph Maynard of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Eddy Bass of Orlando; a stepson, Kevin Bodrogi of Deer Park, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Nichole Bodrogi and Dawn Bodrogi, both of Deer Park; and a sister, Debbie Stull of Rutherfordton. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Carl Barnett, 65, of 116 Gold Run Court, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. He was a native of Cleveland County and son of the late Neal and Jossie Bobbitt Barnett. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Nella Mae Moore and Faye Sue Hull. He was a member of East Gold Street Wesleyan Church in Kings Mountain, where he served as Senior Citizens Director, member of the choir, Sunday School teacher and former trustee. He was a former employee of Bowman Transportation for 23 years and he retired from the City of Gastonia. He was employed by the Kings Mountain Housing Authority. He served in the Air Force. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gertie Pearson Barnett of Kings Mountain; a son, Eric Barnett of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Cathy Maney and husband, Jimmy, and Allison Barrett and husband, Tim, all of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Barbara Barnett and Mary Lou Barnett, both of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren, Arden Maney, Jordon Maney, Breanna Barrett and Haddon Barrett. SHELBY — Mr. Leon Smith, 95, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 5, 1907, in York County, S.C., he was a son of the late Abe Lincoln and Eliza Adeline Smith. He retired from Southern Railroad and was a member of Tryon Masonic Lodge No. 8. He belonged to Saint Luke FBH Church in Forest City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Eugene Smith; seven brothers, John D., Malachi, Walker, Richard, Isaac, Warren B. and Cooper Smith; two sisters, Mamie Parker and Mabelle Lee; and two grandsons, Barry Lynch and Alfonso Smith. He leaves to cherish fond memories five sons, Clinzo Smith, Walker Smith and the Rev. Truman Smith, all of Baltimore; Joe Smith of Rutherfordton and Frank Smith of Kings Mountain; three daughters, Verlene Guest, Evangelist Rosetta Lynch and Dianne Littlejohn, all of Shelby; one sister, Essie Moore of Blacksburg, S.C.; 22 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Wilbur Kiser
SHELBY — Mr. Wilbur Clay Kiser, 90, died suddenly Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born in the Lander’s Chapel Church community of Gaston County on Aug. 19, 1912, to the late H. Clay and Bessie Kiser. He was a 1937 graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College. After playing baseball with the Saint Louis Cardinals organization, he taught in Lincoln County. During the war, he was a supervisor at the shipyard in Wilmington. Following the war, he worked with his brother, Vernon, at Kiser Feed and Seed in Shelby. After returning to teaching, he taught seventh grade math and science at Grover Elementary School, Elizabeth School, Shelby Middle School and Cleveland School. He retired as an educator after nearly 30 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mabel Deck Kiser, formerly from Bessemer City; a sister, Audrey Pasour; three brothers, James Kiser, Amos Kiser, Vernon Kiser; and a brother-in-law, George Deck. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Gene Cook, of Shelby; his son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Jane Kiser, of the home, and his grandchildren, Warren Cook, of Charlotte and Maria and Meleena Kiser, of the home; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Howard Kiser, and Norman and Betty Kiser; a sister-in-law, Viola Deck Dameron; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral is today at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Boggs and Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Lois Sanders McDaniel Hayes, 72, of 210 Cleveland Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Simon J. and Effie Bell Peterson Sanders. A retired nurse, she belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Clyde W. McDaniel and John T. Hayes; a sister, Lilly Melton; and three brothers, Boyce, Billy and Earl Sanders. She is survived by three daughters, Iva Jean Mullinax, Sharon Sue Moss and Deborah Allen, all of Kings Mountain; two sons, Donnie Edward McDaniel and Danny Eugene McDaniel, also of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Beatrice Peterson and Hazel Bollinger of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Gene Land and Bishops Ben Poole and Will Lawson officiating. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens. SHELBY — Mr. William Boyd “Bill” Thompson, 68, of 3524 Bridges Dairy Road, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at home. Born in York County, S.C., he was a son of the late Willie “Sam” and Bertie Barber Thompson. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean conflict and was a retired electrician. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Sammy Thompson.
