The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Florence Baptist Church, with Dr. Bobby Gantt, Chaplain Clegg Taylor and the Rev. Kelly Settlemyer officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. The Padgett & King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY - Mrs. Essie Mae Davis, 64, of 414 E. Warren St., Apt. 1, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Johnny Sims
SHELBY — Mr. Johnny “Big Frank” Sims, 68, of 315 Clegg St., died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1934, in Cleveland County, the son of the late Jack and Effie Lou Barnett Sims. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florrie Sims; a son, Paul; two brothers, Shiloh and Mathew; and a sister, Christine S. Russell. He was a faithful member of Community Baptist Church. He was also a retired truck driver. He leaves to cherish fond memories one daughter and son-in-law, Shirely and Odell Leslie of Lawndale; two sons, Johnny and Happy Sims of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Willie Sims of Shelby; five sisters, and three brothers-in-law, Rosie and Riley Brooks, Pauline Wright, Mary Parks, Hazel and Samuel Cherry and Thersa and Edward Gullatte, all of Shelby; a brother-in-law, Isaiah Russell of Gastonia; two stepchildren, Patricia Parks of Lawndale and Steven Peeler of Durham; two grandchildren, Tomeka and Kendrick Leslie of Lawndale; four great-grandchilderen; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Community Baptist Church with Pastor Thurston Jackson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. CLIFFSIDE — Mr. Joe Lewis Swing, 75, of 2468 N.C. 120, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Irene Van Dyke
BOSTIC — Mrs. Irene Stallings Van Dyke, 71, of 120 Sunny Slope, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002. She was a native of Rutherford County and was the daughter of the late Til and Bell McCurry Stallings. She was a homemaker and member of Fairview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lola Johnson and Bertie Lee Smith; and three brothers, Clyde Stallings, J.T. Stallings and James Stallings. She is survived by her husband, Charles Van Dyke; five sons, Dean Van Dyke and Kenny Van Dyke, both of Bostic, Wayne Van Dyke of Casar, Steve Van Dyke of Chesnee, S.C., and Lewis Van Dyke of Alexandra, Va.; two daughters, Lesa Lane of Union Mills and Linda Newton of Bostic; four brothers, Jerry Stallings and Reid Stallings, both of Bostic, and Johnny Stallings and Horace Stallings, both of Shelby; three sisters, Bessie Elliott of Lawndale, Elsie Smith of Casar and Bertha Bell Terry of Shelby; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church with the Revs. John Ware and Thomas Gossett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home and at other times at the home. BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Clarence Benard Lee, 86, of 201 W. Church St., died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Blacksburg with the Revs. Ken Reid, John Lee Jr., John Lancaster, David Lancaster and Curtis Jones officiating. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes before the funeral. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Gordon Mortuary and at other times at the home.

Gary Jackson
SHELBY — Mr. Gary Lewis Jackson, 54, of 807 Tryon St., died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in an automobile accident. He was the son of the late David James and Gertrude Allen Jackson, and was a financial clerk at Celanese AG-Ticona, where he had worked for 35 years. A brother, Barry James Jackson, preceded in him death. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cleveland Memorial Park with Dr. Buddy Champion and the Rev. Mickey H. Champion officiating. Friends will be received following the graveside service at the cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28202; or to Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association, 1017 N. Washington St., Shelby, NC 28150. Palmer Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

James Lindeman
SHELBY — Mr. James Joseph Lucadamo Lindeman, 83, of 4021 Polkville Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at home. He was born in Hazleton, Pa., and was the son of the late James Lucadamo and Donzella Mahala Faust Lucadamo Lindeman. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Howard Lindeman, and his first wife of 50 years, Martha Smith Lindeman. He was a graduate of Hazleton High School, class of 1938, and attended Penn State University. He was a career project design draftsman, technical illustrator and worked for All American Car Foundry in Berwick, Pa., Pennsylvania Power and Light in Allentown, Pa., and retired in 1986 from E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co., Wilmington, Del. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, Shelby, and a life member of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He was also honored by the Auxiliary of Shelby. He was an avid landscape artist in oils and colored pencil and enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and he loved cars. He is survived by his wife, Janet Tillett Lindeman of the home; a son, James Joel Lindeman Sr., of Wilmington, Del.; a daughter, Donna Mae Lilly and her husband, Dick, of Shelby; two stepsons, John Sine and his wife, Katherine, of Lambertville, N.J., and Walter Voorhees of Allentown, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Linda Pfister and her husband, Bob, of Casar and Dorothy Maimone of Oxford, N.J.; six grandchildren, Jim, John, Richard, Matt and Victoria Lilly, and James Joel Lindeman Jr.; six stepgrandchildren, Jennifer, Jeremy and Jon Pfister, Jessica and Joseph Maimone and James Mason; two great-grandchildren, Randy Haynes and Catherine Mae Lilly; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Lauren Williams. A memorial service will be today at 11 a.m. at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Shumate and Pastor David Lohr officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to Union Baptist Church, Building Fund, 3800 Polkville Road, Shelby, NC 28150. Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GREENWOOD, Del. — Mr. George A. Chambers, 76, formerly of Rutherford County, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Kent General Hospital in Dover, Del. The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Ellenboro with the Rev. Greg Hathaway officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. ELLENBORO — Mr. Hawthorne Campbell, 82, of 185 Radford Road, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Caroleen First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Richard Johnson, Gene Moore and Marshall Clary officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery in Shelby. Marjorie Moorhead CHARLOTTE – Mrs. Marjorie Nelson Taylor Moorhead, formerly of Shelby, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002. She was born Sept. 17, 1909, in Fountain Inn, S.C. Surviving are two daughters, Elinor Hendrick and Mae Davis, both of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Dwaine Hendrick, Mary Buff, Beth Cobb, Tom Davis and Julie McCoy; five great-grandchildren, Josh and Paige Cobb, Daphne, Madeleine and Nathan McCoy; two half brothers, Charles and Bob Taylor of Greenpond, S.C.; and a half sister, Rachel Wood of Fountain Inn, S.C. A private graveside service will be Monday at Independence Hill Baptist Church, where Mrs. Moorhead was a member. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred W. Moorhead; brothers, Henry and Ralph Taylor; and half brothers, David, Jim and Wayne Taylor. Memorials may be sent to the “Flower Fund” of Independence Hill Baptist Church, 10220 Eastfield Road, Huntersville, NC 28078. McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Charlotte Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY — Mrs. Louise Brooks, 94, of 2313 Shoal Creek Church Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Northeast Medical Center in Concord. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph D. and Ella Price Bridges. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Cleatus Brooks; a son, John David Brooks; two brothers and six sisters. She is survived by a son, Donald Brooks and wife, Barbara, of Hickory; two daughters, Mary McLain and husband, Bob, of Concord and Sharon Cantrell and husband, Jack, of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Langston of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren, Calvin Humphries and wife, Marlene, of Concord, LuJuan Dover of Boiling Springs, Myron Dover of Lexington, Benny McClain and wife, Mary, of Kannapolis, Brian Brooks and friend, Cathy Segale, Michael Brooks and wife, April, of Hickory, Mark Langston and wife, Patty, of Oakridge, Sean Cantrell and wife, Jill, and Jennifer Ashworth and husband, Allen, all of Shelby, David Sigmon and wife, Paula, Mark Sigmon and wife, Melody, Kim Pennington and husband, Randy, and Shannon Cline and husband, Bob, all of Hickory; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Jim and Fay Steagall. NEWTON — Mr. Jacob Abraham, 62, of 700th E. 8th St., formerly of Hickory, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Piedmont Village. Born Nov. 24, 1939, in Cleveland County, was a son of the late Henry and Annie Bell Fulton Abraham. He retired from Merchants Distributors, Inc. He was a member of Ramseur Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Annie B. Richardson, Rosie Lee Abraham, Ella Mae Banks; and two brothers, Henry Abraham Jr. and Joseph Abraham. He is survived by his wife, Fannie Jackson Abraham of Shelby; a son, Anthony “Tony” Abraham of Shelby; two grandsons, Morris Abraham and Dontavious Abraham, both of Shelby; a brother, George Louise Abraham of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Abraham of Greensboro; two sisters, Ruby A. Surratt of Shelby and Chinetta Abraham of Hickory; a brother-in-law, Robert Surratt of Shelby; a stepbrother, Tommy Lee Hunt of Kingtown; three stepsisters, Ella Mae Hillman of Kingtown, Lillie Pearl Addison of Shelby and Louise Surratt of Lawndale; an aunt, Grace Lee Williams of Waco; a special friends, Effie Lee Royster of Greensboro; and a host of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at J.W. Abernathy Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Timothy Stevenson officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and will be at the home of Chinetta Abraham, 102-9th Ave., S.E., Hickory.
