GERALDINE PICKETT CATES
Mrs. Geraldine Pickett Cates, 84, died Tuesday, (12-27-2011) at The Laurels of Chatham.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (12-30-2011) at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Chris Gambos officiating.
Mrs. Cates was born in Durham, August 18, 1927, a daughter of Fred and Mattie Gooch Pickett. She was a homemaker, and a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Denver Cates.
Surviving are a daughter, Cindy Creed of Pittsboro; sons, Michael Cates of Pittsboro, David Cates of Louisburg, Randy Cates of Chapel Hill; brother, Harry Pickett; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

TIMOTHY MARK STANLEY
Timothy Mark Stanley, 44, of Apex died Monday, (12-26-2011).
Celebration of Life services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, (12-31-2011) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Cleveland, OH, April 5, 1967, he was a son of Barbara Ann Kiser Stanley and the late Robert W. Stanley, Sr. He was a Baptist, and an auto body technician.
Survivors include his daughter, Sarah Stanley of Cleveland, OH; son, Timothy Davis of Cleveland, OH; mother, Barbara Riddle of Greeneville, TN; brother, Robert William Stanley, Jr. of Apex; and sister, Kathy Stanley Hogan of Cleveland, OH.
HAL CARTER GAINES
Hal Carter Gaines, 50, of Bear Creek died Thursday, (12-29-2011) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.
A private family graveside service was held.
Mr. Gaines was born August 23, 1961, the son of William Clarence and Marjorie (Tally) Gaines. He was a native of Chatham County, had been employed at Kellwood Manufacturing, and attended Antioch Baptist Church. Hal was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gail Ashley.
Survivors include sisters, Lydia T. Tart of Randleman, Kay G. Keck of Apex, Kathy G. Woody of Lillington; brothers, Paul Gaines of Kernersville, Mike Gaines and Mark Gaines, both of Siler City.

SYLVIA JORDAN ALSTON
Sylvia Jordan Alston, 64, of Pittsboro died Friday (12-23-2011) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held Wednesday (12-28-2011) at Jordan Grove AME Zion Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Alston was a graduate of Chatham High School, and completed the C.C.C.C. Certified Nurse Assistant/Physical Therapy Assistant program. She was a member of Jordan Grove AME Zion Church.
Surviving is her husband, Johnie London Alston of the home; daughter, Carla A. McCrae of the home; son, Bryan Keith Alston of Greensboro; brothers, Adrean Jordan, Terry Jordan, both of Siler City, Gene Jordan of Greensboro; sisters, Annie Selle Foxx of Siler City, Patricia Bowden of Greensboro; and three grandchildren.
LAWSON WORTH BARBER
Lawson Worth Barber, 73, of Sanford died Monday, (01-02-2012) at Tara Plantation in Carthage.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, (01-04-2012) at 3 p.m. at New Elam Christian Church in New Hill with Rev. Gary Moore officiating.
Mr. Barber was a native of Goldston, the son of the late Henry L. and Stella Barber. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Emma B. Cratch and brothers, Leonard, Spain and Jesse Barber.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy G. Barber of Sanford; children, Tony Barber of Haw River, Cindy Holland of New Hill; step-sons, Steve Godfrey, Jason Godfrey, both of Sanford; brother, Mosley Barber of Goldston; five grandchildren, one step-grandchild, and one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
CAROL JANET HUNN BOGART
Carol Janet Hunn Bogart, 68, of Siler City died Friday, December 30, 2011 after a battle with cancer.
She was born in Rochester, New York and then lived in Florida (Daytona Beach and Deerfield Beach). She spent the last 28 years living on her farm in Siler City. She attended First Wesleyan Church of Siler City. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant with Twin Lakes Community in Burlington. Her hobbies included woodworking and various crafts.
Surviving are her daughters, Shannon Monteiro and Michelle Powers of Siler City; her sons, Richard Bogart (Kristina) of Siler City and Jason Bogart (Julie) of Burlington; her sister, Linda Friedel of South Daytona, Florida; nine grandchildren and two foster grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jenna Bogart; son-in-law, Phil Powers; and parents, Phil and Doris Hunn.
A memorial service was held Monday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church of Siler City, with the Rev. Eddie McClure officiating. Visitation was held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the church, prior to the service.

RICHARD “DICK” P. JOHNSON, SR.
Mr. Richard “Dick” Palmer Johnson, Sr., of Whiteville, died Wednesday, December 21, 2011 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born April 27, 1933 in Chatham County, the son of the late E.L. Johnson and Berta Fox Johnson.
He was retired from Massey Ferguson, Inc. after 25 years and was the owner of Johnson Equipment Company in Brunswick since 1982. He graduated from NC State University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering and was a veteran of the US Army.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Johnson; two sons, Richard P. Johnson, Jr. of Whiteville, Ron Johnson and wife, Melissa, of Brunswick; a daughter, Angi Baber of Richmond, VA; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Adrian Johnson of Wilmington; two brothers, Russell Johnson and wife, Hannah of Siler City, Eugene Johnson of Siler City; three sisters, Rachel Cox and husband, Clinton, of Siler City, Berta Faye King and husband, Dick, of Gulf, and Judy Johnson of Siler City. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Johnson.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Peacock’s Chapel with Rev. Calvin Malpass officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 222 South Church Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 or a charity of choice.
LEWIS GLENN BROOKS
May 30, 1927 – December 31, 2011
Pittsboro – Lewis Brooks passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 84 on December 31, 2011.
Lewis was a veteran of WW II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a loving husband and father, and a true and generous friend to many. Lewis was predeceased by his wife Marie Fogleman Brooks, and his son, Len Allen Brooks. He is survived by his three sons and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012.

OSCAR C. BLAIR
Oscar Charles Blair, age 83, of Three Rivers, died Friday, (12-16-2011) at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, (12-20-2011) at West Mendon United Methodist Church with Pastor Ward Pierce officiating.
Mr. Blair was born in Benton Harbor, MI on August 14, 1928, the son of John and Francis (Schultz) Blair. He retired from the U.S. Navy after a 30-year career. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, where he was the bagpiper.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Aten) Holmes; a daughter, Karen Bennington of Pittsboro; brothers, Richard Blair, Gene Blair, Jim Blair; sisters, Virginia Waltman, Joanne Rose; four step-children; a granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren; He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Gail Thomas; his first wife, Beverly Jean (Brown) Blair; siblings, Martin, Donald and Deloris.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
ROBERT KYLE MARTIN
Mr. Robert Kyle Martin, 42, of Apex, died Tuesday (12-20-2011) at the William M. Dunlap Center for Caring of Hospice of Wake County.
Celebration of Life services were held at 1 p.m. Friday (12-23-2011) at Apex United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Farmer officiating.
Kyle was born June 14, 1969 in Orange County, the son of Robert Craig and Sharon Copeland Martin. A graduate of Apex High School and NC State University, was employed by Bland Landscaping. He was a member of Merritt’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as president of the Men’s Group.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia “Cindy” Council Martin; sons, Robert Owen Martin, Logan Matthew Ludwig and Holden Lee Martin, all of the home; parents, Craig and Sharon Martin of Apex; and brother, Kevin Martin of Apex.
