JOHN HENRY PAYNE
Mr. John Henry Payne, 82, of Sanford, died Saturday, (09-14-2013), at his residence.
A memorial service was held Monday, (09-16-2013), at 11 a.m. at Tramway Baptist Church with Rev. John Allen officiating. Burial will follow at a later date.
Mr. Payne was born on March 19, 1931, in Stokes County, to the late James Payne and Minnie Lankford Payne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Buford Payne, Bob Payne, and James Payne.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Whitt Payne; sons, John Payne of Sanford, Jerry Payne of Holland, MI, Jeff Payne of Sanford; brothers, Tom Payne, Irby Payne, Jesse Payne all of Mt. Airy; and six grandchildren.
JOHN “BIG BUD” MANESS
John “Big Bud” Maness of High Falls died Sunday, (09-15-2013), at First Health in Pinehurst.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, (09-18-2013) at High Falls Friends Meeting with Rev. Ben Hurley and Rev. Robert Kidd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
Mr. Maness was a Moore County native, and was born May 14, 1926. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Shields Maness, his parents, John Boyd Maness and Mattie Lee Maness, brothers, Cecil and Brackman Maness, and sister, Nannie Maness Chisholm. He was a retired fixer from Burlington Industries in Ramseur, and was an Army Veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member and former elder of High Falls Friends Meeting.
Survivors include a daughter, Laine Maness Williams of High Falls; brother, Lee “Little Bud” Maness of High Falls; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

MARGARET JEANETTE SPIVEY STONE
Mrs. Margaret Jeanette Spivey Stone, 82, of Sanford, died Sunday, (09-15-2013), at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
The funeral was held at 3 p.m. (09-18-2013) at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Benny Helms and Mr. Daryl Perry officiating. Burial followed at Jonesboro Cemetery.
Mrs. Stone was born on April 6, 1931, in Lee County, to the late William Isaac Spivey and Bessie Willis Wilkie Spivey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul William Stone; a son, Paul William Stone, Jr.; sisters, Shelby Jean Patterson, Irene Black, Sarah Mason, brothers, Melvin Spivey and Junior Spivey. She worked at Cornell Dubilier for twenty years before retiring.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Ray Stone of Cameron; daughters, Carolyn Louise Gunter of Broadway, Linda Lou Stone of Charlotte, Janice Faye Eason of Dunn, Norma Jean Spivey of Cameron, Teresa Paulette Davis of Broadway; sisters, Faye Lynn George of Colon, Mary Stone of Providence, RI; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
MARY KAY LESTER
Mrs. Mary Kay Lester, 58, of Sanford, died Thursday, (09-12-2013).
A memorial service was held at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday, (09-17-2013), at 4 p.m. by Deacon Mark Westrick.
A native of Hackensack, New Jersey, she was preceded in death by her father Martin Austin Boyle and a sister Susan Lang. Mary Kay operated an in-home daycare in her home.
Surviving is her husband, Robert Thomas Lester of Sanford; mother, Dorothy Wenzel Boyde; daughters, Julie Marie Lester of Fredericksburg, VA, Jeanette Lynne Lester of San Francisco, CA.; brother, Martin Boyle III of Texas and a sister, Patricia Dodge of New Jersey.
IRENE HOVARTH DARK
Irene Hovarth Dark, 92, of Fuquay-Varina died Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Wake Medical Center in Cary
Mrs. Dark was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, May 14, 1921, the daughter of Alex and Anne (Bene) Hovarth. She spent her retirement in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she became an active member of The Church by The Sea. She and her husband also held a strong affection for the First Baptist Church of Siler City. Irene enjoyed travel, ballroom dancing and singing in the church choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Goldston Dark, Sr.; son, Guy G. Dark, Jr.; and a daughter, Darlene A. Dark.
She is survived by a grandson, Guy G. Dark, III and wife Kim of Cary; granddaughters, Charlene Dark of Holly Springs, Alissa Dark- Freudeman and husband, Jason Fleming of Wilmington; six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
The family received family and friends Saturday, September 14, 2013 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. A graveside service will be Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, North Chatham Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Jim Wall officiating.
Memorial donations of a large print book may be made to a library of donor’s choice or to the American Heart Association.
MILDRED ELIZABETH O’NEIL SHAW
Mildred Elizabeth O’Neil Shaw, 85, passed away peacefully in her home September 10, 2013.
She was born September 30, 1927 in Oswego, NY, daughter of the late John and Mildred Hayes O’Neil. Millie, as she was affectionately called, met her husband, Frank, on a blind date set up by Frank’s sister, Marjorie. Within four years they were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oswego, NY and spent the next year living in married student housing on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Over the years, Millie and Frank made their home in Olean, NY, Corpus Christi, TX, Caracas, Venezuela, West Islip, NY and finally settling in Houston, TX for 34 years before moving to Pittsboro, NC a year ago.
Millie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
In addition to her parents, Millie is preceded in death by her sister, Sally O’Neil Sanford; her brother, John O’Neil; and her sister-in-law, Marjorie Shaw Guernsey.
Millie is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Francis (Frank) J. Shaw III; son, Francis John (Jack) Shaw IV and his wife Cyndi Fagala Shaw of Meadows, TX; daughter, Deborah Shaw Heath and her husband Jon Allen Heath of Pittsboro, NC; beloved grandchildren, Rebekah Heath Tozer and her husband Jeff Tozer of Apex, NC, John Ryan Heath and his wife Meredith Breard Heath of Apex, NC, Aaron Michael Heath and Sandy Meyer Heath of Fullerton, CA, Bonnie Heath Wei of Apex, NC, Chelsea Elizabeth Shaw Nivens of Dallas, TX, Connor Francis Shaw, Mariah Lyn Shaw, Kali Rianne Shaw, Taryn Rae Shaw; beloved great-grandchildren, William Queen, Ethan Queen, River Heath, Asher Queen, Mackenzie Tozer, Reed Heath, Ava Wei, Finley Heath, Macy Tozer, Knox Heath, and Maverick Heath; sister, Joanne O’Neil McMahon and her husband Ted McMahon of Oswego, NY; sister-in-law Patricia Shaw Harvey Cooney and her husband John Cooney of Port St. Lucie, FL; and brother-in-law James Edward Shaw and his wife Audrey of Moravia, NY. In addition, Millie is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service of Mass was held at 10 o’clock the morning of Monday, September 16, 2013 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC.

NICK BRAY DARK
Nick Bray Dark, 93, of South Second Avenue, Siler City, died Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Siler City Center.
Mr. Dark was born in Chatham County on October 11, 1919, the son of Robert and Emma (Bray) Dark. Nick was a member of the First Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 93 and was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a retired electrician and had worked for Chatham Foods. Mr. Dark was preceded in death by seven brothers and four sisters including a special twin sister, Nydia D. Kemp, and two grandchildren, Todd Andrews and Brad Dark.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lala (Deane) Sykes Dark; one son, Nick B. Dark, Jr. and wife Gail of Indianapolis, IN; three daughters, Carolyn D. Wood and husband Tom of Ithaca, NY, Sharon D. Daye and husband Ricky of Wake Forest, Lisa Dark of Siler City; four grandchildren, Robert Dark, Trent Dark, Lauren Lampman, Kristen Daye, and three great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Tuesday, September 17, 2013 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC.
A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, N. Chatham Ave, Siler City with Rev. Jim Wall and Rev. Tony Capehart officiating.
Memorials may be made to Community Hospice or to the First Baptist Church.
MILDRED RUTH HUMAN HOLLOWAY
Mildred Ruth Human Holloway, age 89, passed away on September 2, 2013 at her home in Kingston, TN.She was retired from Glendale Hosiery and a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church in Siler City, NC. She was a member of the Eastern Star, being a duel member of Kingston Chapter #405 and past worthy matron of Laurel Chapter #22 in Harriman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Holloway, parents, Maynard and Fannie Human, sisters Marjorie, Anna Mae, and brothers, Carl, Earl and Kenneth.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Teresa Holloway of Tampa, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Keith Horton of Kingston; grandchildren, Nicholas Holloway, Christopher Holloway, Terri Weston, Amy Holloway, all of Tampa; Brian Sternowski, Emily Sternowski, both of Kingston, Patrick and Chelsea Horton of Kannapolis; great grandchildren, Jayme Weston, Haylee Weston, Kadie Weston, Christopher Holloway, Magen Holloway and Abby Holloway, all of Tampa, Dylan Sternowski of Kingston; brothers Basil Maynard Human, Jr. of Harriman, Bill Human; sisters, Betty Saliba, Mary Burney, Ruby Spakes, all of Kingston; and many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2013 in the Kyker Chapel with Rev. Sonny Works officiating. Burial followed at Piney Grove Cemetery with Eastern Star Memorial Service conducted by Laurel Chapter #22. The family received friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Friday at the Kyker Funeral Home in Kingston.
FLOYD ARNOLD BROWN, SR.
Floyd Arnold Brown, Sr. (Brownie), 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the Siler City Center.
Formerly of Sanford, he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara C. Brown; daughter, Shawn Poe and husband Darrell of Bear Creek; sons, Floyd Arnold Brown, Jr. of Chandler, AZ, Todd Brown of Sanford; sisters, Iris Strother and Joyce Wilson, both of Carthage; brothers, Herman Brown of Carthage, Ralph Brown of Thomasville; grandchildren, Jennifer Holder of Bear Creek, Christin Poe of Asheboro, Brittany Poe of Raleigh, Delaney Brown of Chandler, AZ, Brent Brown of Carthage; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Preston Holder of Bear Creek. He was preceded in death by his sister, Louise Lisk of Carthage.
A native of Moore County, Mr. Brown was a veteran of World War II. He was an airplane pilot flying for Resort Airlines, Corporate Pilot for Roberts Company and Chief Pilot for the State of North Carolina. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, musician and golfer. He was known for his marksmanship, winning several skeet and sporting clay events. He was a well-respected judge of the National Fiddlers Competition in Nashville, TN.
A memorial service was held to celebrate his life at 3 p.m. Sunday September 8, 2013 at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Bear Creek. Visitation followed the service in the church activity building and other times at the home of Darrell and Shawn Poe, 467 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek.

MARY H. GREENHUT
Mary H. Greenhut passed away on August 20, 2013 in Orlando, Florida, after a long illness.
Mary Greenhut, daughter of the late Jesse Harris and Ida H. Harris was born in Siler City, NC on June 28, 1930.
Mary graduated from Siler City High School and moved to Greensboro where she attended UNC, Greensboro. In 1952, she moved to New York City where she became a secretary at Music Corporation of America. While working at MCA, she was assigned to Johnny Greenhut. Two years later, Johnny formed his own Management Agency and asked Mary to join him. Johnny and Mary married in Las Vegas in 1955 They managed the likes of Jayne Morgan, Peggy Cass, Carol Lawrence and a young Andy Williams to name but a few. Upon Johnny’s death in 1960, Mary continued to manage the agency successfully for a couple more years until she sold it, leaving show business behind. She moved to Southampton NY in 1973 where she worked for Cunningham Insurance for over 20 years. After retiring, Mary moved back to Greensboro in 2000, where she attended and volunteered at Buffalo Presbyterian Church. She was recognized the 2008 Woman of the Year by the congregation. Mary was an avid sports fan, going to NY Giants games including Super Bowl 25. She also enjoyed watching tennis and golf.
Mary cared for many friends and family members during terminal illness and will be remembered for always putting others first. She will be dearly missed.
Survivors include her son, James Greenhut, and wife Joanne; stepson, Robert Greenhut and wife Ellen; sister, Jackie H. Ellis of Siler City and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Greenhut, brothers, Charles L. Harris, Wallace M. Harris, J. Curtis Harris, and sisters, Glenna H. Bradford and Bethel H. Daurity.
Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery on September 21, 2013 at 2 p.m.

MRS. ELMA KELLY SMITH
Mrs. Elma Kelly Smith died Friday, September 6, 2013 at UNC Hospital. She was 94.
Elma was born on August 28, 1919 in Chatham County, the daughter of the late Clinie D. and Etta Cole Kelly. She graduated from Siler City High School with the class of 1936. She retired from Stout Chair Company in Liberty after serving as office manager for 48 years and 8 months. She was a member of First Baptist Church and served in many capacities. She also was an active part of the Dig and Dream Garden Club, Siler City, BPW Club and Chatham Hospital Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don C. Smith; brothers, Cecil, Harland and Leonard; sisters-in-law, Alice, June and Alene; nephews, Pat and Cecil Lee.
She is survived by her sister, Shirley Kelly Wilson; nieces, Miriam, Sharon, Cindy, Linda Carol, Marcia, Kelly and Tracy; nephew, Jimmy; great nieces, Shawn, Dare, and Madison; great-nephews, John, Kyle, Trey and Spencer and one great-great-nephew, Hunter.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 14 at the First Baptist Church in Siler City. Visitation with the family will be from 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. with the memorial service following. A private burial service will be at Moon’s Chapel Church later in the day.
In lieu of flowers, the family will prefer that donations be made to First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, Moon’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Fellowship Baptist Church ”Project Grow Fund, ” or a charity of your choice.
