CAROLEEN — Mrs. Shirley Champion Poteat, 59, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Four Square Gospel Church with the Revs. Ricky Poteat and Ronnie Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Isabel Dickson
SHELBY — Mrs. Isabel Davis Dickson, 95, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002. The daughter of Marshall and Lizzie Davis, she was born Jan. 25, 1907, in Gastonia. After graduating from Gastonia High School, she attended Asheville Teachers College and received her teaching degree. She taught at McAdenville School and married Brady Wilson Dickson Sr., in 1930 and moved to Shelby. A life-long Presbyterian, she was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church for more than 70 years. She was an avid reader, world traveler and gardener, who enjoyed bridge, cooking and volunteering for the Red Cross. Mrs. Dickson was a member of the Shelby Garden Club and the Women’s Circle at Shelby Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her four sons, Ronald Wayne of Mooresville, Dr. Glenn Wilson and wife, Nancy, of Gainesville, Fla., Cecil Davis of Shelby and Brady Wilson Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Mount Gilead; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gene T. Davis of Miami and Joe Davis of Marion; two sisters, Mabel Neal Stroup of Columbus, Ga., and Aubrey Capps of Gastonia; and many nieces and nephews and special friends. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be 2 p.m. Friday at Shelby Presbyterian Church, Shelby. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be private at Sunset Cemetery. The family wishes to thank FirstHealth Montgomery Hospital and the entire third floor skilled nursing staff for their loving and compassionate care for the last several years of Mrs. Dickson’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to FirstHealth Montgomery Foundation, P.O. Box 486, Troy, NC 27371; or to Shelby Presbyterian Church, 226 E. Graham St., P.O. Box 1444, Shelby, NC 28151. Palmer Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

CLOVER, S.C. — Mr. Kalee Jamar Marchum, 51, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Jessie Wray Funeral Home in Asheville. Arrangements by Genesis Funeral Service at www.Genesisfuneralservice.com.

Irvin Franklin
SHELBY — Mr. Irvin Franklin, 70, of 414 Hatcher Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was born March 22, 1932, the son of late Paul R. and Elizabeth Franklin. He was a machinist and served in the Army in Korea. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Marvin, Eli, Ulan and Paul Jr. Franklin. He is survived by a wife, Ruth Gettys Franklin; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Irvin and Lynn Franklin of Sharon, Mitchell and Lila Franklin and Winton Franklin, all of Shelby, and Robert and Lori Franklin of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters and sons-in-law, St. Augustean “Sissy” and Jimmie Blanton, Alori and Scott Hunt and Ava Franklin and David Bowen, all of Shelby; a brother, Jerry Franklin of Kings Mountain; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Jo and Arron Everhart of Lexington and Catherine Lail of Caser; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Way of the Cross Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jimmie and Sissy Blanton at 410 Charles Road in Shelby.

Myrtle Marshall
RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Myrtle Terry Marshall, 88, of 237 Tryon Road, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Willow Ridge of North Carolina. A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. in Wall’s Baptist Church Cemetery. Crowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Danny Brittain
SHELBY — Mr. Danny Ray Brittain, 53, of 2607 Spring Valley Terrace, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at home. Born Oct. 3, 1949, in Cleveland County, he was the son of Mae Lena Martin Brittain of Lawndale and the late Lester Brittain. He was owner and operator of D&W Produce. He was a member of Friendly Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Debra Walker Brittain of Shelby; two stepdaughters, Haley Whisnant and her husband Joey, of Kings Mountain and Jennifer Ruppe of Greensboro; a sister, Kathy Wells of Lawndale; his father-in-law, Bruce P. Walker of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Lauren, Avery and Hunter. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ervin Price, Dale Angel and Wade Boone officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Bruce P. Walker, 816 Hill St., Shelby. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150; or to Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association, 1017 N. Washington St., Shelby, NC 28150. Gerald Hayes
SHELBY — Mr. Gerald Edwin Hayes, 73, of 1777 Idlewild Drive, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Hospice of Cleveland County. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Charlie Hayes and Emma Crowder Hayes. He retired as a stock clerk from Drexel Furniture, where he worked for 34 years. He was a member of Westwood Heights Baptist Church. He also served in the Army, where he served in Korea and received the Service Medal, Bronze Service Star and U.N. Service Medal C.I.B. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hayes; and two sisters, Vivian Hoyle and Avanila Garver. He is survived by his wife, Burnette Hayes of the home; a daughter, Angela Hayes of the home; a brother, James Hayes of Shelby; two sisters, Edna Black of Shelby and Edith Brackett of Lawndale; and two special friends, Ken and Helen Grayson of Shelby. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Revs. Jimmy Black and Jim Brackett officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Essie Davis
SHELBY — Ms. Essie Mae Davis, 64, of 414 E. Warren St., Apt. 1, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Home. Born April 18, 1938, in Lincolnton, she was a daughter of the late George Henry Sisk and Elizabeth Kathleen Russ Sisk. She was formerly employed by Rogers Theater and Taste-T Drive In and was a member of Shelby Missionary Methodist Church. She is survived by her ex-husband, Dean Davis Jr. of Shelby; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Rev. Charles Ray and Jeannie Davis of Marion and Keith and Star Davis of Shelby; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Bernice and Roger McDaniel and Wanda and John Kee, all of Shelby; nine grandchildren, Jim Davis of Morganton, Amy Lunsford, Jennifer Davis and Matthew Davis, all of Marion, Brian Davis, Brandi Davis, Wendy McCurry, Johnathon Kee and Christopher Kee, all of Shelby; six great-grandchildren; and special friends, Ray Arrowood and Danny Arrowood, both of Grover. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shelby Missionary Methodist Church with the Revs. Allen Kniceley and David Black officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Entombment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Bernice McDaniel, 502 Christopher Road, Shelby. GASTONIA — Mrs. Meredith Hoyle Lansing, 79, of 2506 E. Spencer Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Galloway officiating. Burial will follow in Reeps Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund for Meredith H. Lansing, care of Teresa Edwards, P.O. Box 83, McAdenville, NC 28101. Louis Snyder Sr. BATON ROUGE, La. — Mr. Louise Joseph Snyder Sr., 87, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002. The funeral was held Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home. Deacon James Way officiated. A private burial was held at the family plot in the Garden of Faith section of the Resthaven Gardens of Memory.

KANNAPOLIS — Mrs. Mary Louise Geter Rucker, 82, of 600 Cadaliac St., died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Northeast Medical Center. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Bethal Baptist Church with elder Bryan Pierce Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Roy Chitwood, 50, of 204 Fulton St., died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Darryl Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. DALLAS — Mrs. Lillie Mae Hall Sherard, 72, of 406 S. Rhyne St., died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. The funeral will be Humphrey’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Dallas. Burial will follow in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Costner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Knight
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Mary Jane Canipe Knight, 71, 109 Carlton Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at the Brian Center in Lincolnton. She was born June 19, 1931, in Gaston County, a daughter of the late Clyde Andrew and Mary Alma Yoder Canipe. Mrs. Knight was a member of the First United Methodist Church and retired registered nurse from Lincoln County Medical Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Hoover Knight Sr.; and a sister, Mabel Leonhardt. Survivors include her son, Alfred “Al” Hoover Knight Jr. and wife, Sylvia, of Shelby; and two granddaughters, Joy Lynn Knight and Beth Anne Knight, both of Shelby. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Pyatt officiating. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 601 N. Pink St., Cherryville, NC 28021; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
