KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Martha Hartsoe Dobbins, 74, of White Oak Manor, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Hope officiating.
Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and other times at the home of a sister, 811 Ellison St.

CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Joyce Randall Ramsey, 79, of 111 Sussex Ave., died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Carolina Care Center.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Billy Lowe officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carpenters Funeral Home and other times at the home.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

'L.C.' Ford
CROUSE - Mr. Lander "L.C." Carter Ford, 75, of 2793, St. Marks Church Road, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at home.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Crouse United Methodist Church with the Revs. Fred Falls and Nathaniel Austin officiating.
Burial will be in Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton with full Masonic Rites. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carpenters Funeral Home and other times at the home.

ELLENBORO - Mrs. Ruby Lee Hoyle Jones, 96, of 241 Ledford Road, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Drury Dobbins Baptist Church with the Revs. Alvin Allen, Odell Cogdell and Joe Greene officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Craig Lowe
MOUNT HOLLY - Mr. Craig Hillman Lowe, 77, formerly of 1616 Charles Raper Jonas Highway, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
A native of Gastonia, he was a son of the later Franklin Odell and Cornelia Craig Lowe. He was a retired chemist, served in the Army, was a former member of the Stanley Lions Club and a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Brooks Lowe; a son, Roger Graeme Lowe of Charlotte; a daughter, Sara Lowe McCall of Grover; and four grandchildren, Laurel Lowe, Craig McCall, Katie McCall and Ian McCall.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Drs. Dennis Knight and Robert Winecoff officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 South Main St., Mount Holly, NC 28120

Suzanne McAulay
HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Mrs. Suzanne Arrowood McAulay, 67, died on Aug. 18, 2001, at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Va.
A native of Rutherford County, she was born Feb. 25, 1934, a daughter of the late Ralph Davis and Sue Gaffney Arrowood of Bessemer City.
She graduated from Kings Mountain High School and attended Appalachian State University School of Music. A pianist and organist, she later received her degree in childhood education from Sacred Heart College and taught at Clover Middle School in Clover, S.C., until her retirement in 1980. She was attending classes at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., as recently as June of 2000.
She is survived by a son, William Arrowood McAulay of Raleigh; a daughter, Catherine McAulay Ellison of Hampton Roads; three granddaughters, Laura Suzanne McAulay and Ashley Elizabeth McAulay, both of Raleigh, and Melissa Summer Duncan McCarley of Hampton Roads; and a grandson, Travis Bounty McCarley of Hampton Roads.
She willed her remains to medical science for the study of arthritis and the advancement of biotechnological treatment for cancer.
A memorial service will be Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at Long Creek Presbyterian Church in Bessemer City.
Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

C.D. Hendrick
SHELBY — Mr. Conan Doyle Hendrick Jr., 72, of 4035 Fallston Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 3, 1930, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Doyle Hendrick Sr. of Shelby and the late Louella Wright Hendrick. He retired from Fiber Industries and Fasco and also taught at Shelby High School. He was a lifetime member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and former Sunday school director and teacher and RA leader. He was a volunteer at South Mountain Baptist Camp. He was a civil defense coordinator during the ’60s. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and also a graduate of Appalachian State University with a master’s degree in education. He also served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by an infant son; and a brother, William “Billy” Hendrick. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nell Gold Hendrick of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, C.D. “Butch” Hendrick III of Shelby and Richie and Debra Hendrick of Lawndale; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mischia and Al Tinnin of Connelly Springs and Karen and Terry Brady of Shelby; four sisters, Juanita Hoyle of Lawndale, Marshall Ann Williams of Fallston and Joyce Strickland and Mary Alice Laughlin, both of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Pearl Barnette; special friends, Lawson and Lillian Botts; and 11 grandchildren, Charity Tinnin, Faith Tinnin, Hope Tinnin, Chris Brady, Jenny Brady, Ashley Hendrick, Laura Hendrick, C. Doyle Hendrick IV, Austin Hendrick, Winston Hendrick and Madison Hendrick. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Rick Hamrick, Ed Sessom and Russell Fitts officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home. Zeb Green
POLKVILLE — Mr. Zeb William Green, 93, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 23, 1908, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late George and Florence Short Green. He retired from Jenkins Livermush Plant and also worked for Stamey Stores in Polkville. He was a member of Polkville United Methodist Church and also Camp McCall Masonic Lodge No. 534. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mozelle Lee Green; a brother, Paul Green; and a sister, Blanche Gilbert. He is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Benita and John O. Whisnant of Polkville, Mary Jane “Janie” Floyd of Fallston and Diane Green of Shelby; a sister, Vertie Dellinger of Hickory; a special niece and her husband, Alice and Jim Floyd of Polkville; and five grandchildren, Jeremy Martin, Julie Martin, Justin Hubbard, Nicholas Demetro and Alex Demetro. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Polkville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Evelyn Ruth Jones Campbell, 69, of 830 Bethany Church Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher. A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Caroleen, with Dr. Jim Diehl officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. CASAR — Mr. Ricky Eugene White, 39, of 1010 N.C. 226, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.

‘Dot’ Schermerhorn
WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Beard Schermerhorn, 72, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Born Oct. 6, 1930, in Thompson, Ga., she graduated from Jamesville High School in 1947 and the Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse until her retirement in 1985 from Woodbine Nursing Center in Alexandria, Va., where she was floor supervisor. She is survived by two sons, Dutch and Glenn Schermerhorn, both of Woodbridge; one daughter, Sandra Panther of Shelby; and three nieces, Denise Milne of Big Pine Key, Vi Cheek of Hillsborough and Paige Wallington of Raleigh. A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Jamesville Cemetery in Jamesville, N.C. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington Hospital Center, Ward 2G, Medical Intensive Care Unit, 110 Irving St., N.W., Washington, DC 20010; or floral arrangements may be sent to the Biggs Funeral Home, 302 W. Zula Keller
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Zula Mayse Keller, 95, of 125 Henderson Circle, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Henderson Care Center. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Crowe’s Funeral Home with the Rev. James Daves officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour after the service at the funeral home.

Marceline LeGrand
SHELBY — Mrs. Marceline Humphries LeGrand, 71, of 106 Park Circle, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002. She was born June 15, 1931, daughter of Blanche Grigg Humphries of Lattimore and the late Russell Lee Humphries. She was educated through high school in Lattimore. She graduated from Wake Forest University and obtained her master’s degree in education from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Marceline also did graduate work at Appalachian and Western Carolina universities. In addition to her father, Marceline was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca Elizabeth. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Ervin G. and Sarah Geneva Humphries of Raleigh and Dean R. and Saundra W. Humphries of Lattimore; two nephews, “Rusty” Humphries of Mocksville and Clifford E. Humphries of Raleigh; three nieces, Jane Humphries and her two daughters, Sarah of Raleigh and Jennifer of Winston-Salem, Kelly Grubb and her husband, Greg, and their three children, Daniel, Miranda and David, all of Shelby, Janet Lee Sanders and her husband, Danny, and their three children, Christina, Rebecca and Cody, all of Lenoir. Marceline was childless, but she acquired a loving and devoted family when she married H. Eugene LeGrand on Oct. 30, 1991, who survives. Her family all loved Marceline. Their children are Dr. Homer E. LeGrand and his wife, Brenda Lefler, of Hampton, Victoria, Australia, Bryan LeGrand and his wife, Brendan, of Lattimore, Anne LeGrand of Singapore and Elisabeth LeGrand-Tull and her husband, Read Tull Jr., of Waxhaw. Their grandchildren are Christine Lehman and her husband, Dr. Jon, of Santa Fe, N.M., Homer LeGrand V and his wife, Nicole, of Yarraville, Victoria, Drs. Alex and Laurie Ann LeGrand of Durham, Drit Shoemaker III of Hood River, Ore., and Read Tull III and Spencer Tull, both of Waxhaw. Their great-grandchildren are Brenton James LeGrand, Oliver Torrance LeGrand and Max LeGrand. They communicated with her regularly and visited with her often, and Marceline and Gene visited them in their separate locations until her illness prevented it. They did considerable traveling during the 11 years of their wonderful and happy marriage. Marceline never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew her. She appreciated the kindness and concern of her caregivers, Nancy Bridges, Elaine Guin and Lorene Brooks, who looked after her, not only as a patient but as a friend. Marceline’s doctors, Drs. Brent Ferrell, Warden Woodard, Kevin Klein and Michael Heafner were impressed by her positive attitude in the face of devastating illness that involved surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and many trips for scans, MRIs and blood work with never a complaint. Her faith served her well. Until recently, Marceline was active in Shelby Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Covenant Sunday School Class. She was active in her circle, the women of the church and an early volunteer with the Homework Club, helping children with special needs. Marceline recently served on the board and as secretary of the Abuse Prevention Council. She served on the board of the Girls Club of Shelby. Marceline devoted 37 years of her life to education with the Cleveland County Schools system. She started teaching in August of 1953. She taught at Polkville, Crest and No. 3 Township schools. She retired in July of 1991 as administrative supervisor. She was a member of ADK Sorority and the Retired Teachers Association. Marceline was a golfer and until recently was a member of the Cleveland Country Club Women’s Golf Association. She loved to dance. She loved the outdoors and especially loved fishing for trout in the mountains or fishing in the surf of the coast. Marceline’s smile, patience and sweet disposition will be missed by all who knew her. Our loss is heaven’s gain. Her funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey and the Rev. Allen Huff officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Plains Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the Abuse Prevention Council of Cleveland County, 407 W. Warren St., Shelby, NC 28150; Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Angel Scott
SHELBY — Ms. Angel Lynette Scott, 30, 1310 Kings Road, departed this life to be with the Lord Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was born in 1972, the daughter of Sally Scott of Lawndale and the late Charles Scott. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lawndale and was employed by George and Libby Shipley of Shelby. In addition to her loving mother, she is survived by one sister, Tabitha Scott of Shelby; one brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Patricia Scott of Shelby, three nieces, Ebony Wallace and Lerraille and Gerraille Mason, all of Shelby; two nephews, Marquette Feaster of Kings Mountain and Cornellus Scott, a very special nephew; a very special friend, Eluno Wilson of Shelby; and a host of other relatives. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with Pastor B.D. Houze officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and other times at the home of her brother, Tony Scott at 1701 Kings Road in Shelby. Roy Lail
FALLSTON — Mr. Roy Cleaburn Lail, 79, of 845 E. Stagecoach Trail, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at home. Born June 12, 1923, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late John L. and Nellie Mae Queen Lail. He retired as an auto repairman and was a member of Mulls Memorial Baptist Church. He also served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals. In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Lail; and a sister, Lallage Blankenship. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Annie Cook Lail of the home; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Jake and Sadie Lail of Shelby and Wayne and Susan Lail of Grover; six daughters and six sons-in-law, Juanita and Roger Page and Lena and Mike Dellinger, all of Shelby, Judy and Cecil Willis, Ramona and Steve Philbeck and Teressa and Robert Wright, all of Fallston, and Brenda and Mitch Walker of Lawndale; three brothers, Ralph Lail of Gaffney, S.C., and Cecil Lail and Earl Lail, both of Shelby; two sisters, Maxine Nanney and Dot Green, both of Shelby; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mulls Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Ervin Price officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
