WILLIAM DARRYL “DUSTY” MARTIN

Mr. William Darryl “Dusty” Martin, age 52, of Siler City, died Friday, February 21, 2014, as a result of a car accident in Raleigh, N.C.

Mr. Martin was born November 6, 1961, in Lee County, N.C. to the late William Booker Martin, Jr. and Shelby Stone Martin. He was an operations supervisor at the Orange Water and Sewer Authorities, Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant for the last seven years. He had previously worked at treatment plants in Lee County, Siler City, Cary, and Chatham County.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Paula Parson Martin; sons, James William Martin and Brandon Reese Martin, both of the home; and a sister, Debra Martin Millikin and husband Roger of Sanford.

A memorial service was held Monday, February 24, 2014, at 7 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Yandle officiating.

PHYLLIS SUE WILSON MICHAEL
Phyllis Sue Wilson Michael, passed away February 20, 2014, preceded in death by husband Harry E. Michael and son H. Eddie Michael Jr., survived by sister Mrs. Virginia Fasth, Wareham, MA, and children Patrick Michael, Knoxville and Melissa Michael, Siler City, grandson Harry E. Michael III and his mother Nancy Proffitt, Lexington, NC.

Phyllis met her husband at the University of Kentucky where she graduated with two majors in History and Music. She was a loving mother who kept a home full of books, many musical instruments, arts & craft supplies, and a costume trunk. She was the type of mother who would serve flower blossoms with salads and let your friends paint acrylic murals on the family room wall. She wrote essays for The Encyclopedia of Appalachia and “Appalachian Livin.” Phyllis played organ in the church, sang with several Methodist Choirs, was a trained soloist, a member of United Methodist Women, and a Lay Speaker. She played dulcimer with “The Wildflowers, ” performed in a Clown Ministry and with various little theaters. She taught private voice, piano, and organ at home. She was an advocate for early childhood development, a certified school, and pre-school teacher, and a member of PEO Sisterhood. Her interest in the family genealogy led to researching back nine generations and membership in DAR.

In lieu of flowers send donations to the Methodist Home For Children.

Memorial service is Friday, February 28, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill UMC at7019 Pleasant Hill Church Road.

ALTON PALMER GAINES
Alton Palmer Gaines, 89, of Siler City died Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.

Mr. Gaines was born in Chatham County on December 12, 1924, the son of John Thomas and Mattie (Hancock) Gaines. He was an Army veteran of WW II, a member of Antioch Baptist Church and the owner/operator of a logging business. Alton enjoyed playing cards and was known for his ability to tell a story. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Allred Gaines; son, Jerry Gaines; daughter, Patsy G. Carter; sister, Mary Lee Powers; brothers, Oren Gaines, John T. Gaines, Jr., Bill Gaines and Fred Gaines.

He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Gaines of Asheboro, Sharon G. Gray of Sophia; four sisters, Louise G. McLaughlin and husband Buddy, Ella G. Brower and husband Jim, Frankie G. Bridges, Betty G. Stone and husband Dennis, all of Siler City; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all who have been supportive during Alton’s illness.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, 3835 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston, with Ritchie Nall officiating.

KAY WHITE PURCELL
Kay White Purcell, 65, of Asheboro died Sunday, (02-09-2014).
The funeral was held Saturday, (02-15-2014) at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Womack Keck officiating. Burial followed in Oakley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Purcell was born in Chatham County on August 3, 1948, the daughter of James and Irene (Edwards) White. She was employed by The Moll Plastic Company and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her husband, David Mark Purcell; mother, Irene (Edwards) White of Siler City; brothers, Roger White of Siler City, and Tommy White of Asheboro.
Memorials may be made to Randolph County SPCA, 160 North Park Street, Asheboro, NC 27203.

VINCENT TAYLOR
Vincent Taylor, 61, died Wednesday, (02-12-2014) at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Taylor.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the family.

PALMER GODWIN PATTISHALL
Mr. Palmer Godwin Pattishall, 87, of Sanford, died Friday, (02-14-2014) at Rex Rehabilitation Center in Apex.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time but will be announced by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

JIMMY RAY COMER
Jimmy Ray Comer, 60, of Robbins, died Monday (02-10-2014) following an auto accident.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, (02-16-2014) at 3 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Neal Jackson, Dr. Curtis Barbery and the Rev. Jamie Brown officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Sheryl L. Comer, of the home; daughter, Morgan Comer of Bennett; son, Worth Comer of Bennett; one granddaughter; mother, Ethelene C. Comer of Robbins; sisters, Joyce C. Garner of Bennett and Judy C. Clendenin of Robbins. He was preceded in death by his father Ted Comer and brother Dean.

Jimmy saw-milled with his father and grandfather for many years. He previously worked with the NC Department of Corrections and was actively employed with the Moore County Sheriff’s Department as a detention officer for 17 years.

Memorials may be made to the Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund.

JEANNETTE ELIZABETH BATES FITZGERALD
Jeannette Elizabeth Bates Fitzgerald, 66, of Siler City died Monday, (02-10-2014) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

A gathering of family and friends will be held later.

Ms. Fitzgerald was born in Boone, Illinois on May 30, 1947, the daughter of Nelson Dewey and Ilda Maye (Taylor) Bates. She was a retired accountant and was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Margaret Maitland and Arlene Schuler.

She is survived by one son, James P. Fitzgerald of Mary Esther, FL; twin sister, Jennifer B. Strickland of Siler City; sisters, Madlyn Bates of Delevan, WI, and Kathryn B. Boyd of Winnemucca, NV.

JERRY MATHIESEN MOSES
Mr. Jerry Mathiesen Moses, 72, died Tuesday (02-04-2014) at The Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

A Celebration of Life service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (02-08-2014) at Hall-Wynne Griffin Chapel.

A native of Chatham County, Jerry was born to the late Obed William Moses and Maude Moses Moses, January 12, 1942. He spent his life farming, raising hogs and cattle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Imogene M. Byrum and Mary Alice “Polly” Moses.

Mr. Moses is survived by his brother, Thomas W. “Sonny” Moses of Pittsboro.

GUY DAVID “FOOTNIE” SMITH
Guy David “Footnie” Smith, 86, of Siler City died Monday, February 10, 2014 at Siler City Center.

Mr. Smith was born in Chatham County on August 21, 1927, the son of Ed and Essie (Smith) Smith, one of 14 children.

He was an Army veteran, a member of West End United Methodist Church with 30 perfect attendance pins and had served his church in numerous offices including choir director and Sunday school teacher. He was also a lay minister. Guy taught Distributive Education in Chatham County Schools, coached basketball and umpired recreational league for 30 years. He served 25 years on the Board of Commissioners for the Town of Siler City. He also worked for a number of years for Brewer Insurance and Realty. He enjoyed Jordan-Matthews sports, bingo and checkers. Guy was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Apple Smith.

He is survived by two daughters, Shirley Ann Lucas of Siler City, Anna Smario and husband Tony of Greensboro; grandsons, Joseph Perry and wife Kim of Apex, Tim Johnson and wife Kristen of Climax; great-grandchildren, Cohen and Aniston Johnson.

The family received friends on Saturday, February 15, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 2 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Whittaker officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

Memorials may be made to West End United Methodist Church, P O Box 1017, Siler City, NC 27344.

GERALD SCOTT MARCLE
Gerald Scott Marcle, 67, of West Elk Street, Siler City died Friday, February 14, 2014 at Siler City Center.

Mr. Marcle was born in Mobile, Alabama on May 28, 1946 the son of Henry Harvey and Bill Evelyn (Powers) Marcle. Gerald retired from the United States Air Force with the rank of Master Sergeant after 24 years of dedicated service and had served in Vietnam. He was an avid Alabama fan, an avid fisherman and a member of the American Bass Association. He had been active in the Meals on Wheels program with the Chatham County Council on Aging.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Suzann Marcle; daughter, Natalie Marcle Harris and husband Jimmy of Greensboro; son, Gerald Marcle II and wife Candice of Cary; grandsons, Nathan Marcle and Jacob Harris.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City with Rev. Clyde Denny and Rev. Josh Dawalt officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of NC, 514 Daniels Street #109, Raleigh, NC 27605, or Chatham County Council On Aging, Meals on Wheels, P O Box 715, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

DANIEL RAY SPACH
Mr. Daniel Ray Spach 43, of 726 Millbrook Drive in Pittsboro, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014 at his home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church in Pittsboro, where he was a member, with Pastor Steve Moore and Rev. J.J. Ward officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, with Military Honors provided by Randolph County Honor Guard.

Mr. Spach was a native of Michigan, a veteran in the Air Force where he was a Navigation Systems Specialist, and he also served in Operation Desert Storm. He worked several years for IBM as a Computer Engineer. Mr. Spach loved to coach his daughter’s soccer team, working in his yard, boating, and woodworking. He was a strong believer in JESUS CHRIST. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed the weekend adventures with Shelby and Julie.

Mr. Spach is survived by his wife, Julie Phillips Spach; daughter, Shelby Spach of the home; parents, Elmer and Jenny Spach of Crystal, Michigan; sisters, Brenda Spach of Crystal, Michigan, Danette Gannon of Goose Creek, S.C.; brother; Shane Spach of Crystal, Michigan; and his in-laws, Charles and Linda Phillips of Bear Creek.

Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church, and at other times at the home in Pittsboro.

LOTTIE HINSLEY COOK
Mrs. Lottie Hinsley Cook of Pittsboro, passed away early Wednesday afternoon, February 12, 2014 in Siler City.

A native of Wake County, Lottie was one of seven children born to the late Paul Hinsley and Lucy Hussey Hinsley. She had a love of Bluegrass music and telling jokes. She was an amazing cook known for her fried chicken tenders, fried peach pies, and cold oven cakes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by two of her brothers, Gerald and Paul Hinsley, and her sister Polly Mitchell.

Survivors include her husband, James “Joe” Cook of the home; her sons Brad (Tabitha) Cook of Pittsboro; her brothers, Fred (Kay) Hinsley of Merry Oaks, NC, Walter Lee (Joanne) Hinsley of Bonsal, NC; her sister, Helen (Jasper) Culberson of Graham, NC; and her grandchildren, Brandon Cook, Ethan Cook and Aaron Cook.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Lottie Cook will commence at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Hall-Wynn funeral service, Griffin Chapel, 396 West Street, Pittsboro, NC 27312. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the funeral home.

A family fund for Joe and Lottie Cook has been established at Sun Trust Bank in Pittsboro. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the bank at: PO Box 399, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
